The Coens' debut is an excellent, very modern (without being post-modern) noir. I showed this in a theater 2 or 3 times a night for a month and a half. I never got tired of it. I'm still not. A virtual blue-print for effective low-budget film-making. Highly recommended.

It's your basic un-filmable novel, but here they've managed a successful translation to film of the escalating mania and surreal structure of Heller's brilliant novel. Buck Henry wrote the screenplay. The cast is to die for.It really is; go check it out. I'll wait ... See what I mean? And an amazing opening credits / first scene. Remember, those all real airplanes really taking off! A film I return to. If you've never read the novel then this film would make you want to. If you have read the book then you should know better than to expect a 2 hour film to be able to realize it, full blown. Exactly the same thing could be said of LORD OF THE RINGS. I think Buck Henry did an amazing job of capturing the surreal organized insanity and relentlessly efficient stupidity of war (and I believe this applies as well to the entire human world around us all of the time)
