Did You Know?
(on Robert Taylor
(Wellman directed him in Small Town Girl
(1936) and in Westward the Women
(1951))) I have never gotten along with actors but I was crazy about Bob Taylor. I think he's one of the finest men I've ever known. He was probably handsomest of them all.I had no trouble with him at all. He did everything I asked him to; he was wonderful.
Wellman was discovered while playing hockey by Douglas Fairbanks, who encouraged him to come to Hollywood. Wellman obliged by flying his Spad and landing on a polo field located in Fairbanks' backyard. After an acting job in Fairbanks' "Knickerbocker Buckaroo," Wellman worked as a messenger boy, property man, assistant cutter, and assistant director before directing his first film in 1923.
