Votes: 191,381 | Gross: $93.44M

"Just got back from Tomorrowland (2015, Dir. Brad Bird). It's an enjoyable enough adventure to watch for two hours, though it has some very typical problems of Damon Lindelof's writing. It starts off with a very intriguing sci-fi premise (which ends up just being some recycled Lost plot points, but that isn't an inherently bad thing to do), but as it is goes on plot points kind of get forgotten, and the plot kind of retreats into a naive, escapist, Randian nonsensical solution to a legitimate moral concern the film raises. Also George Clooney's character is dangerously close to being a pedophile.

There are good things in the movie (Hugh Laurie, George Clooney, and the girl who plays Casey (Not sure what the actress' name is), the "commercial" scenes where reality interferes, the initial premise etc.), but it never quite cohesively comes together as a singular experience."

90 Metascore

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.

Director: George Miller | Stars: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz

Votes: 1,086,130 | Gross: $154.06M

"Mad Max: Fury Road (2015, Dir. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ (AKA George Miller)) - I saw the original Mad Max five or six years ago, and it didn't leave too much of an impression on me. I never saw any of the two original sequels, and have no special attachment to the franchise.

So listen to me when I tell you that Fury Road might be one of the best action films ever made in this century. Modern sensibilities have been combined with classical techniques. The (many!!!) landscape shots recall the way John Ford filmed Monument Valley. The non-stop action (This film is practically a two hour chase scene with occasional breaks) recalls Buster Keaton's The General, especially with how many physical stunts are actually pulled off in this film. The camerawork thankfully does not devolve into shaky cam- shots are framed carefully so we can always tell who we are looking at. There is rapid editing, but it is purposeful and makes the action clear and easy to follow on-screen- Sergei Eisenstein is crying tears of joy in his grave at how well montage theory has been applied here. The performances themselves are *beep* great for this kind of film too, as Tom Hardy plays a Max that is mad in the sense that insanity could take him over at any moment (He spends the film consistently haunted by the hallucinations of people he failed to save in the past). Charlize Theron's Furiosa is a "strong female character" in the sense that she actually has a decent amount of depth to her for an action heroine. She kicks copious ammounts of ass in the film, yeah, but it is not fetishized in the way that people like Whedon do it. It is actually relevant to her story and the feminist, anti-patriarchal themes of the film. And yet we aren't being preached at either- these ideas come naturally from the story Miller has chosen to tell here. There are meaningful stakes as well, as characters actually are in danger, and some even die! This isn't a cynical film though- it is a hopeful one about humanity as a whole, which puts it in contrast to something like Bird and Lindelof's Tomorrowland.

This movie might be a masterpiece of cinema. It really shows how little people like J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon having going for them as directors in comparison. THIS is visual, cinematic storytelling in a genre that has been lacking it lately. Go see this film in theaters right now. It is worth it."

TV-14 | 31 min | Short, Action, Comedy

In 1985, Kung Fury, the toughest martial artist cop in Miami, goes back in time to kill the worst criminal of all time - Kung Führer, a.k.a. Adolf Hitler.

Director: David Sandberg | Stars: David Sandberg, Jorma Taccone, Steven Chew, Leopold Nilsson

"I didn't know what to expect from Kung Fury before watching it, and I ended up hating it. It felt like a genuinely bad movie that thought it could get away with being bad by occasionally yelling "Wow! Look at how bad I am!" with all of its self-depreciating jokes. Yes, you are bad, now go away.

I also didn't find any of the action scenes to be filmed in a particularly good or memorable way. The excessive gore just got a little obnoxious after a while too."

171. Doragon bôru: Gokû no shôbô-tai (1988 TV Short)

TV-PG | 11 min | Animation, Short, Action

Goku and his friends are members of a fire brigade and explain how to deal with fires. This comes in handy when Bulma's apartment is on fire.

Director: Kazuhisa Takenouchi | Stars: Masako Nozawa, Kôhei Miyauchi, Mayumi Tanaka, Tôru Furuya

Votes: 306

Goku teaches us about fire safety, after not being content with dictating how we approach traffic. I'm frankly a bit tired of how this character insists on controlling our lives... It is a form of fascism, and and something we should all collectively be ashamed of for allowing to exist. Truly the shame of humanity.

172. Dragon Ball: The Path to Power (1996)

"Generally pretty good. I like how it remixed the different plot points of DB in a unique way, and even threw a little bit of DBZ in there with Android 8's death, and Goku freaking the *beep* out as a result.

Also they gave General Black a redesign, so he didn't have to be a blackface caricature anymore! On the other hand, they turned Major Metallitron into a blackface caricature!"

In the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline-rich community escape a horde of bandits.

Director: George Miller | Stars: Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Max Phipps

Votes: 193,681 | Gross: $12.47M

A film a notch above the original Mad Max. We can see George Miller's style and concerns developing here, especially in the last vehicle action sequence which foreshadows what Fury Road will be about almost entirely. A solid action film of the 1980's.

174. The Only Son (1936)

Not Rated | 87 min | Drama

A widow sends her only son away to receive a better education. Years later, she visits him, finding him a poor school teacher with a wife and son.

Director: Yasujirô Ozu | Stars: Chôko Iida, Shin'ichi Himori, Masao Hayama, Yoshiko Tsubouchi

Votes: 4,041

Another Ozu film about family drama, as a recently married man, now with a baby, reveals his lifestyle and concerns about living in Tokyo to his mother who he hasn't seen in years, only to find out about her own changes in living conditions. As usual, Ozu brings his great visual style to this movie.

175. It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles (1993)

G | 87 min | Documentary

"It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles" is a 1993 documentary feature about Orson Welles's ill-fated Pan-American anthology film "It's All True," shot in 1941-42 but never completed.

Directors: Bill Krohn, Myron Meisel, Orson Welles, Richard Wilson | Stars: Manuel 'Jacare' Olimpio Meira, Jeronimo André De Souza, Raimundo 'Tata' Correia Lima, Manuel 'Preto' Pereira da Silva

Votes: 864

A neat film. The first half is a fairly typical documentary about an unfinished Orson Welles film, and the second half is an attempt at putting that film together from what exists. It becomes a kind of pseudo-silent film, as the sound/less footage that Welles shot was combined with foley and music. Perhaps there could have been a bit more to bookend the film after the reconstructed sequence. 7.5/10.

176. Sword of the Beast (1965)

Not Rated | 85 min | Action, Drama

After killing a counselor of his clan, a fugitive samurai befriends a couple poaching the shogun's gold in the mountains.

Director: Hideo Gosha | Stars: Mikijirô Hira, Gô Katô, Shima Iwashita, Toshie Kimura

Votes: 3,092

A solid samurai film about what motivates people to commit violence, where the "beasts" of the title seem to be the more self-centered that engage in such acts. While it doesn't have the visual style of a Kurosawa film, Gosha is competent enough (Especially considering this is his second feature film as a director). The natural setting of forests, mountains, rivers, and rock almost makes up for the relative lack of style.

177. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Directors: George Miller, George Ogilvie | Stars: Mel Gibson, Tina Turner, Bruce Spence, Adam Cockburn

Votes: 147,621 | Gross: $36.20M

Not quite as good as The Road Warrior, but an enjoyable film none the less. I liked the various film references, from calling Max "The man with no name", to a diner called "The Atomic Cafe", to Lost Boys-esque characters having a "cinema screen on a stick".

A rather gruesome documentary featuring a whale being hunted and killed. Seeing the poor animal get cut up was rather tragic.

Interestingly, the version I watched on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LMTY931-mc) featured rather tragic sounding music during the cutting up of the whale, likely being subversive with what Robert W. Paul intended.
