Whitesnake are reissuing and expanding their covers album, The Purple Album, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of singer David Coverdale joining Deep Purple.
Originally released in 2015, The Purple Album was recorded by Coverdale along with guitarist Reb Beach, bassist Michael Devin, guitarist Joel Hoekstra, and drummer Tommy Aldridge, who, at the time, was appearing on a Whitesnake studio album for the first time since 1989. The collection cherry-picked songs from the three LPs Coverdale recorded with Deep Purple: Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974), and Come Taste the Band (1975).
ETitled The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition, the upcoming expanded reissue is set to drop October 13th on 2-cd/Blu-Ray and double-lp vinyl formats — 50 years after Coverdale joined the Deep Purple.
In addition to the original tracklist in remixed/remastered form, the expanded edition also houses a plethora of bonus material, including unreleased recordings, live cuts, alternate mixes, video supplements (on the Blu-Ray version), and, most notably,...

In Rodrigo García’s Last Days in the Desert, Ewan McGregor plays Jesus and the Devil, and he brings a surprising amount of sincerity to both seeker and snake. It sounds like stunt casting, but it’s not. Many of the Devil’s temptations, questions, and asides feel like they could be coming from within Yeshua, or “the Holy Man,” as he’s referred to in the film. The Devil toys with Jesus’ own insecurities — whether that’s meant metaphorically or literally, you can decide for yourself. Last Days in the Desert focuses almost entirely on the time Jesus spent in the desert before coming to Jerusalem, and the first words he utters are to the sky are, “Father, where are you?” This is a portrait of the prophet as a man of doubt.Jesus is looking for God, trying to find a way to communicate with Him. All he...

Besides hosting a Satyajit Ray season throughout August and September, the British Film Institute (BFI) is holding the first exhibition in the UK to highlight Satyajit Ray’s design works.
The exhibition will be held at the BFI Southbank from 14 August until mid-October and is free for all.
Before Ray directed Pather Panchali in 1955, he worked as a graphic designer for an advertising agency in Kolkata. In addition to creating over 30 films throughout his career he also designed many of their sets, costumes, credit sequences and posters.
A selection of the director’s poster designs will be on show in the Atrium at the BFI Southbank. It will include both original and facsimile posters, showcasing the best of Ray’s creations.
“Ray’s unique graphic style owed as much to Indian art and indigenous folklore as it did to Western traditions.

Criterion brings two of auteur Satyajit Ray’s early 60s works to the collection this month with Charulata (1964) and The Big City (1963), both starring Madhabi Mukherjee in phenomenal performances. While both explore women’s lives in a rigidly male dominated world, it’s the earlier film that stands as Ray’s first look at contemporary life in his native Kolkata. While his nine previous films were either period pieces or set outside of the city (Charulata, in fact, sees him returning to period, set in 1870s India), the coalescence of budget and talent finally brought his modern times project to fruition, which he had apparently been wanting to make since his 1955 Palme d’Or winning debut, Pather Panchali. Beyond being simply the story of a woman, Ray constructs an intimate character study that examines an uncomfortably changing social climate, economic pressures, racial injustice, and the moral obligation to do the right thing.

Looking back at 2012 on what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2012—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2012 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2012 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Week two in DocuWeeks' three-week run in Los Angeles brings new films about a concert in a Nazi concentration camp, an unjust prison sentence given to a Lakota Sioux medicine man and a company that lost two-thirds of its workforce on September 11. It also raises a question: To re-enact, or not to re-enact? The three films mentioned – Doug Shultz's "Defiant Requiem," Jennifer Jessum's "Holy Man: The USA vs. Douglas White" and Danielle Gardner's "Out of the Clear Blue Sky" (left) – all rely at times on staged re-creations of events. The...

Moviefone's New Release of the Week "Chronicle" What's It About? Teens gain superpowers and struggle between becoming heroes or villains. See It Because: A "found footage" superhero movie sounds like a gimmick on top of a gimmick, one trying to capitalize on the success of "Paranormal Activity." But the young talent in front of -- and behind -- the camera imbue the format with real, dynamic youthful energy; be warned it's a short movie, clocking in at 84 minutes. (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "Being John Malkovich" (Criterion Collection) What's It About? John Cusack stars as a sad-sack file clerk by day, amateur puppeteer by night, who finds a secret tunnel that places him in the mind of actor John Malkovich. Eddie Murphy, A Thousand Words John Carter Box Office: Prince Of Persia Revisited? Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, which received about as many bad reviews as the Andrew Stanton / Taylor Kitsch sci-fier John Carter, easily maintained its position at the top of the North American box office this weekend, March 9-11. The Lorax took in $39.1 million (-44% from last weekend), according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Domestic total: $121.95m. Budget: $70m. As mentioned in my previous article (see link above), John Carter was no. 2 with $30.4m. At no. 3, the widely panned low-budget flick Project X added $11.55 million (-45%). Domestic total: $40.12m. Budget: $12m. Starring Martha Marcy May Marlene's Elizabeth Olsen, Silent House opened with $7.01m at 2,124 locations, for a mediocre $3,300 per-theater average. It gets worse: the Laura Lau / Chris Kentis-directed horror flick received an F rating from movie audiences. The silver lining: It reportedly cost less than $1m,...

HollywoodNews.com: It was judgment day for the much-debated John Carter, as Disney’s $250-300 million sci-fi adventure finally was unleashed on paying audiences this weekend. And the judgment was mostly grim with a possible silver lining. With a terrible marketing campaign that didn’t know what to sell, and mixed word of mouth and reviews that emphasized its convoluted story and mediocre action sequences, the film debuted with just $30.6 million. For a cheaper picture, this would be a fine debut, but for a massively expensive would-be franchise tentpole with little chance of maintaining legs, this is a pretty disastrous result. As I’ve written about from time to time, Disney has been dead-set on creating a boy-friendly franchise while all but openly insulting the female-friendly films that have long been its bread-and-butter. In the last few years, we’ve seen Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,...

Cliff Curtis, Eddie Murphy, A Thousand Words Andrew Stanton/Taylor Kitsch's John Carter Box Office: Way Behind Zack Snyder's 300, Watchmen Eddie Murphy was to have hosted the 2012 Academy Awards ceremony, but dropped out after one of the show's producers, Brett Ratner, was fired (or resigned) following his use of an anti-gay slur and his comments about sex with Lindsay Lohan. Of course, no one can know for sure if the box-office take of the $40m-budgeted DreamWorks/Paramount release A Thousand Words would have been higher had Murphy kept his Oscar gig. But one thing is certain: it couldn't have been any lower. Nor could its approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes: 0%. Murphy, who'll turn 51 next April 3, has had a string of box-office disappointments — in some instances downright disasters — in recent years. A Thousand Words, which was actually shot in 2008, is his latest. The Brian Robbins-directed comedy co-starring Kerry Washington...

In his latest comedy, Eddie Murphy becomes spiritually linked to a tree, which loses a leaf every time he speaks. (Don.t ask . just watch this trailer, and you might better understand.) With the film about to reach theaters, DreamWorks dropped a poster online (via BlackFilm.com), which we.re sharing below: Wasn.t Tower Heist supposed to mark the return of 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop-era Murphy? This looks much more like the hokey, one-joke premises of Imagine That or Holy Man than Murphy.s earlier, inspired comedies. How old is that .baby-back ribs. joke? And isn.t the crossing-a-busy-street gag from the trailer lifted right out of Bowfinger? The new poster doesn.t do much else to sell me on A Thousand Words, which I fear will just be more watered down Murphy parceled out to the masses. Oh, and Brian Robbins is at the helm. His...

Neverland, a prequel to author J.M. Barrie’s classic, Peter Pan, sweeps in time from the turbulent seas of the pirates of the Caribbean and the back alleys of Dickensian London to a world of pure imagination. Eddie Murphy was once the funniest man in America. Then something happened, and he just lost it. I don't know what it was, a bad agent or maybe having kids and wanting to make movies they could watch. But since the 90s, he has had a solid string of releases that made big money largely because of their family-friendly PG-13 ratings. The Nutty Professor, Doctor Dolittle, Holy Man, Bowfinger, Shrek, I Spy, Daddy Day Care, The Haunted Mansion, Norbit are all rated PG-13 or even PG. His last R-rated film was Metro in 1997, 14 years ago.
Therefore, I approached Tower Heist with hope for the potential I saw for Murphy to get back to the edgy, offensive, adult mode that made him famous. The trailer gave me hope that his first R-rated film in more than a decade wouldn't be a total flop. I'm happy to report that while he's not back to 100 percent,...

The bad-boy comedian and voice of Donkey in Shrek has found a new leading role – as host of the 2012 Oscars awards
Age: 50.
Appearance: an older, wiser Eddie Murphy.
That would be helpful if I knew who we were talking about. Eddie Murphy – bad boy comedian and actor, star of Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, Holy Man, Daddy Day Care, Norbit …
Never heard of him. Or them. What about Trading Places? Beverly Hills Cop? Beverly Hills Cop II?
Vaguely familiar, but definitely before my time. He's also the voice of Donkey in Shrek.
I love Donkey! He says what the rest of us only dare to think! What's he been up to? He, or rather Murphy, is going to host the 2012 Academy Awards.
Why him? It could be that after last year's bland and largely unsuccessful pairing of James Franco and Anne Hathaway, the Oscar folks have returned to the idea of...

Was Isabella an overly loving angel or the devil with a killer sex drive?
Granted, Natalie Zea (as Isabella) was fun to watch, but that's nothing new. I loved her on Dirty Sexy Money and she's fantastic on Justified, so it's no surprise I also liked her here. Her performance saved what could have been a completely cheesy storyline.
But it was still way over the top. Isabella was a woman accused of killing her husband with sex. Did the prosecutor really have to go over all of the different types of sex acts in his opening statement? I know they were going for the shock factor, but that...

Barrie's famous fairytale which would focus on The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, The Indians, Croc and the Neverland itself. It will begin with the story of Peter as an orphan, making a living as a pickpocketer.
Raised on the streets of turn-of-the-century London, orphaned Peter and his pals survive by their fearless wits as cunning young pickpockets. Now, they've been rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook to snatch a priceless treasure whose magical powers transports them to another world.
It's here that the boys find themselves confronted by a band of 18th century pirates led by the power-mad Elizabeth Bonny, and the Native American Kaw tribe led by a Holy Man, which has protected the secret of the tree spirits from Bonny and her gang for ages.

The film – to be released in two 90-minute parts in 2011 appearing exclusively on Sky Movies Premiere HD – is a bold new take on the original mythology of Jm Barrie’s famous story featuring The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, The Indians, Croc and Neverland itself. Written and directed by Nick Willing, the movie marks the beginning of the classic yarn and marks the return of Bob Hoskins in the role of Mr Smee from Steven Spielberg’s Hook.

Syfy have had success putting twists on beloved children’s stories in recent years, from the miniseries Tin Man (based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard Of Oz saga) to Alice (based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland books), so nobody was surprised when Syfy announced their intention to give Jm Barrie’s Peter Pan a bonkers reinvention called Neverland last year. And now some production photos have appeared, courtesy of BSkyB, who will be premiering Neverland in the UK later this year.
Neverland retells the famous story, but as a curiously altered prequel. In this interpretation, set in turn-of-the-century London, Peter (Charlie Rowe) is an orphan living with a gang of pick-pocketers led by Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) — in shades of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. After the boys steal a treasure with magical powers for Hook, they’re transported to the realm of Neverland, to be confronted...
