Having grown up on the Rankin Bass Christmas specials since I was a child, the Yuletide season just isn't the same without a yearly viewing of some of their most enchanting shows. Since the 1960s and 1970s, specials such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy and The Year Without a Santa Claus were shown on the major television networks. In the late 1980s it became increasingly difficult to see most of these specials unless you had cable television or video cassette recorders as the major networks stopped airing them. With the availability of home video, the shows were inevitably made available to the masses and made great Christmas presents.

The fine folks at Classic Media have released some of these beloved Christmas classics on Blu-ray. In a two-disc set entitled The Original Christmas Classics, »

Our Holiday Favorites: The Man Who Came to Dinner

15 December 2011 8:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Bette Davis in a breezy, holiday comedy -- why, yes! In The Man Who Came to Dinner, she plays secretary Maggie Cutler to Monty Woolley's acerbic blowhard Sheridan Whiteside. The film is based on the 1938 play by Kaufman and Hart, and is so full of then-contemporary pop culture references, it's almost like I Love the '30s (and Early '40s). Jimmy Durante plays a character based on Harpo Marx, fictional Beverly Carlton (played by Reginald Gardiner) is shaped on Noel Coward, and Ann Sheridan's Lorraine Sheldon is formed on legendary actress Gertrude Lawrence.

The 1942 movie runs like a play at times; most of the action is based at the home of the wealthy Stanley clan, which you almost pity and dislike at the same time. Whiteside is the "Man" of the title, a radio host and public speaker unafraid to speak his mind to anyone that will listen. »

Still Funny After All These Years

5 December 2011 8:17 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

New York -- If your idea of Christmas holiday fun includes a caustic comedy with a warm, mushy heart, then the Peccadillo Theater Company's amusing revival of a popular, acerbic play from the 1930s will hold great appeal.

Popular wit and radio star Sheridan Whiteside was not always a very nice man, as conceived in 1939 by two masters of theatrical comedy, Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, in their tart comedy "The Man Who Came To Dinner." The antic, insult- laden play about one December in Whiteside's busy life, which opened Sunday night off-Broadway at The Theatre at St. Clement's, is still laugh-out-loud funny, even in its dated references to famous names from the 1930s. A talented cast of 23 creates a wonderfully farcical atmosphere under the sure direction of Dan Wackerman.

Apparently a thinly disguised version of Alexander Woollcott, Whiteside is first seen as a disagreeable, blustery but powerful tyrant, »

The Movie You Need To See This Holiday Season

23 November 2011 2:39 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

With Thanksgiving approaching, that means it's almost time for putting up the tree, stringing the lights and preparing for all things Christmas. But while you're getting wrapped up in tinsel, there are some very busy elves hard at work.

In Aardman's newest feature, "Arthur Christmas," Santa's oldest son Steve (voiced by Hugh Laurie) has convinced his dear old jolly dad (voiced by Jim Broadbent) to ditch the sleigh and the reindeer, and now operates Christmas like a reconnaissance mission. Santa is merely a figurehead, while Steve is the real brains behind the operation. Meanwhile, grumpy old Grand Santa (voiced by Bill Nighy) longs for the Christmas of yesteryear, when the sleigh was a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer and not a futuristic spaceship.

But with all of this new technology and bickering, where's the real joy of the season? The heart of Christmas?

That title belongs to Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy), the clumsy, »

Clint Eastwood on 'J. Edgar': Did the FBI keep a file on Dirty Harry?

20 November 2011 11:52 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Clint Eastwood has always seemed like a law and order kind of guy, so J. Edgar Hoover probably wouldn’t have kept tabs on him the way he monitored other more  Hollywood figures.

If he were still around today, however, Hoover would surely be ready to open a file on the veteran director. Eastwood’s new film J. Edgar, which expanded its release this weekend, opens its own scandalous investigation into the divisive FBI director, via screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Oscar-winner for Milk.)

We loved Dirty Harry for operating outside the law, though he always seemed to do it in the service of good. »

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition (1974)

Synopsis: For some unexplained reason, letters to Santa Claus are being returned to the children of Junctionville. It seems some resident has angered St. Nick by calling him “a fraudulent myth!” Skeptical Albert Mouse has to be brought to his senses “and let up a little on the wonder why.” How Albert is persuaded to change his tune paves the way for Santa’s jolly return to town – and the joyous finale of the animated fable inspired by Clement Moore’s poem and produced by the merrymaking conjures of Rankin/bass studios. The voice talents of Joel grey, Tammy Grimes, John McGiver and George Gobel make this festive fable even more fun. (highdefdigest.com)

Holly Madison takes out insurance on her breasts. Well... d'uh.

29 September 2011 11:36 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In the annals of unusual celebrity insurance policies, Holly Madison’s recent revelation that she has a $1 million policy with Lloyd’s of London on her breasts barely raises an eyebrow. After all, Adam Lambert’s crotch was covered for an even mil. Celine Dion reportedly insured her voice. Heck, David Lee Roth wisely — so so wisely — insured himself against his own sperm (should one ever complete its journey).

You can appreciate why these stars seek such insurance. Without their unique feature or talent, they are no longer that special person. It’s why Jimmy Durante insured his nose and Dolly Parton insures her breasts. »

Sybil Jason obituary

South African-born child movie star viewed as a rival to Shirley Temple

From 1935 to 1938, Shirley Temple was the world's biggest and smallest movie star. During this period, Warner Bros launched their answer to Temple in the cute, dark-haired, wide-eyed, button-nosed Sybil Jason, who has died aged 83. Jason made six feature films and four Technicolor two-reelers for the studio over these years. Unfortunately, most of her films and roles shamelessly resembled those of Temple's at 20th Century-Fox, and never equalled them in popularity. However, according to Time magazine in 1936: "Among child actresses, Sybil Jason is to Shirley Temple as Jean Harlow is to Ann Harding – less wholesome but more refreshing."

She was born Sybil Jacobson in Cape Town, South Africa, where her father ran a shoe business. As her mother was in fragile health, the girl was brought up mainly by her older sister Anita, who nurtured her precocious talent, »

Rare Footage Unearthed Online

One of the great film collections that has yet to be fully explored belongs to the citizens of the United States. The National Archives in Washington houses an enormous quantity of footage generated by the government, including all branches of the armed services over the years. It is also home to the vast library generated by the Universal Newsreel, which ran from the silent era through the late 1960s. Lauren Bacall matches noses with Jimmy Durante as Humphrey Bogart looks on, during a rehearsal for Armed Forces Radio Service during World War Two. Because there is no copyright on any… »
