Director: David Fincher | Stars: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 494,966 | Gross: $102.52M

1/10 - Watched only 20 minutes. I went in very optimistic but there was no way I was going to get over how completely contrived it was compared to the Swedish version. There's only one Lisbeth Salander.

Votes: 95,638 | Gross: $5.36M

5/10 - Started out ok, liked the old irish guy, but don cheadle's character rubbed me the wrong way, he had no personality of his own. Got wierd after a while, director made weird choices. End was ok.

9/10 - Awesome. Tom Hardy's Forrest Bondurant is one of cinema's all time badasses. Touches of humor and romance, poetry and violence. --11/26/12

72 Metascore

A sex addict's carefully cultivated private life falls apart after his sister arrives for an indefinite stay.

Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale, Lucy Walters

Votes: 206,279 | Gross: $4.00M

3/10 - Was hoping to learn some slick moves from this guy, but nope, not that kind of movie. More of a depressing, creepy, long boring extended shots kind of a movie. With incestual overtones and a suicide scene. No thank you! 12/3/12

Director: Gavin O'Connor | Stars: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison

Votes: 498,036 | Gross: $13.66M

10/10 - Pretty much everything I want in a movie. So good I sat through the entire end credits just letting it sink in. --12/17/12

14. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

PG-13 | 164 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman

Votes: 1,828,013 | Gross: $448.14M

6/10 - Meh. Maybe the best of the trilogy for me, but still just another overly long, unremarkable action flick. I guess I'm not that crazy about Christian Bale as Batman, or Nolan as the director. --12/19/12

15. Life of Pi (2012)

PG | 127 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

79 Metascore

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

Director: Ang Lee | Stars: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain, Tabu

Votes: 666,994 | Gross: $124.99M

9/10 - Which story is the truth, and which is the allegory? Whichever one you "want" to believe. "And so it goes with god." The Priest said "you must be thirsty." Thirty was the tigers real name. Pi = the tiger. Awesome. Loved everything except it was a touch too long and the end could have been better. --12/24/12

16. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

R | 153 min | Adventure, Drama, War

69 Metascore

In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Mélanie Laurent

Votes: 1,584,839 | Gross: $120.54M

7/10 - More of what has become typical Tarantino, which I find entertaining, but not real satisfying. I liked the tension in the interrogation/basement scenes, the "interesting" casting choices, and of course the QT signature graphic scenes not meant to be forgotten, etc. But while it was worth the watch, a repeat viewing won't be necessary. --12/26/12

17. Act of Valor (2012)

R | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

40 Metascore

An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent.

Directors: Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh | Stars: Alex Veadov, Roselyn Sanchez, Nestor Serrano, Rorke Denver

Votes: 71,806 | Gross: $70.01M

8/10 - Damn few! Despite a weak plot, some horrible dialogue, tolerable at best acting (albiet from actual Navy Seals), and deeper questions of military policy, this was pure action heaven. Nonstop, smart action filmed and edited masterfully, with battles and technology based on real missions. You could smell the military authenticity. And not just straight up war porn for the dudes; the letter storyline that bookends the movie is fantastic, and the Tecumseh poem is a brilliant touch that should make you forgive all that stuff I mentioned at the beginning. I will be watching this again come 4th of July. --12/30/12

18. The Art of Flight (2011)

PG-13 | 80 min | Documentary, Adventure, Sport

Two years in the making, this film gives snowboarder Travis Rice and friends the opportunity to redefine what is possible in the mountains.

Director: Curt Morgan | Stars: Travis Rice, Mark Landvik, John Jackson, Nicolas Müller

8/10 - Great winter watch. Breathtaking scenery. Adventures with the back-country boarding crew. --1/1/13

19. Looper (2012)

R | 119 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.

Director: Rian Johnson | Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano

Votes: 603,090 | Gross: $66.49M

8/10 - If you think too much about it, the spoiler paradox will emerge. So you have to suspend your belief and just enjoy it. The hunting kids thing, and the kid actor were a little weird, and Bruce Willis shoot-out scene a little over the top, but I appreciate the film's originality and style. Joe should have said "Au Revoir" before "the end." --1/4/13

20. Pitch Perfect (2012)

PG-13 | 112 min | Comedy, Music, Romance

66 Metascore

Beca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school's all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.

Director: Jason Moore | Stars: Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp

Votes: 330,816 | Gross: $65.00M

7/10 - Not an Oscar-winner, but fun and very funny (especially Rebel Wilson and Elizabeth Banks). Plot could have been less annoying, and it got a little tired before the big finale, but the good outweighs the bad overall. The girls who played Aubrey and Chloe are gorgeous. --1/6/13

21. Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

PG-13 | 93 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

86 Metascore

Director: Benh Zeitlin | Stars: Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes

Votes: 85,079 | Gross: $12.80M

9/10 - "The most important thing I can teach y'all... to take care of people who are smaller and sweeter than you are." I was tempted to turn it off by halfway but then it got magical. I could smell Louisiana. --1/6/13

22. The Bourne Legacy (2012)

PG-13 | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

61 Metascore

An expansion of the universe from Robert Ludlum's novels, centered on a new hero whose stakes have been triggered by the events of the previous three films.

Director: Tony Gilroy | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Scott Glenn

Votes: 315,641 | Gross: $113.20M

7/10 - The bad: Lacked the mood and intelligence of the Bourne Trilogy, relied on "juiced" agents, somewhat confusing and thin plot, and had an abrupt ending with no confrontation. The good: Renner was badass, Marta was hot, the motorcycle chase scene was sick (if a bit long), and it was overall good enough to stand on it's own if you don't compare it head to head with Matt Damon's films. --1/7/13

23. Lincoln (2012)

PG-13 | 150 min | Biography, Drama, History

87 Metascore

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Votes: 272,710 | Gross: $182.21M

8/10 - A masterwork of acting, shakespearian in ways. Loved Tommy Lee Jones. Glad they didn't dumb it down. Inspires greatness. Want to see again. --1/10/12

24. Ruby Sparks (2012)

R | 104 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

67 Metascore

A novelist struggling with writer's block finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then willing her into existence.

Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris | Stars: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas

Votes: 105,451 | Gross: $2.54M

2/10 - Not at all how I would have written it. Good premise but poorly written. Really annoying, unrealistic behavior. Zero chemistry between two people supposed to be in love. Don't believe the hype. This was a bore. Elliott Gould's beard though. --1/11/13

25. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama

67 Metascore

Charlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.

Director: Stephen Chbosky | Stars: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Paul Rudd

Votes: 548,160 | Gross: $17.74M

9/10 - "I feel infinite." A literate coming-of-age film set in the early nineties. Perfect, almost. Despite patches of weak dialogue, it was a well done homage to the kind of teen movies that define a generation. It was like a dark John Hughes movie. ¨We accept the love we think we deserve.¨ There was also a lot of something you don't see to often anymore - people just being nice to each other. And great music. Nice to see a film make the music important like they used to. Good stuff. "I just really want a milkshake." --1/11/13

26. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

R | 122 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

81 Metascore

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Director: David O. Russell | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver

Votes: 742,906 | Gross: $132.09M

7.5/10 - Why it wasn't a 10? Didn't exactly like Bradley Cooper's character Pat. His obsession with ex-wife was uncomfortable. Loved Jennifer Lawrence though. --1/15/13

27. Argo (2012)

R | 120 min | Biography, Drama, History

86 Metascore

Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.

Director: Ben Affleck | Stars: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin

Votes: 639,258 | Gross: $136.03M

6.5/10 - "Argo *beep* yourself," was this overhyped. Turns out to be a very average movie, bordering on cheesy at times. Writing wasn't very good, the acting was stiff, especially Affleck, and I wasn't made to care about any of the characters. The suspense was (falsely) manufactured. John Goodman just played the same character in Flight! Recreating these scenes with such detail was impressive, and it's an interesting story worth knowing, but overall Argo was a watch once and move on affair. --1/23/13

28. Suits (2011–2019)

R | 147 min | Drama, Mystery, War

94 Metascore

A U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest

Votes: 710,498 | Gross: $83.47M

7/10 - Obviously a cinematic masterpiece, but didn't form a connection with me. Well woven story, with symbolism and metaphors that are fun, and frustrating, to think and talk about, but too psychedelic for my tastes, and heavy on forced scenes that didn't work. By the end the dramatics were out of control. I do appreciate the art (and the poetry) of AN, and the overall message that the inhumanities of war blur the line between evil and madness, but still only incite both. I'm certain that if I had seen this film as a teenager/young adult, I'd have liked it more. And seriously, the two black guys die first? *beep* dated. --1/30/13

*Should read Heart of Darkness, the Novella it was based on.

"Charlie don't surf." "This mission does not exist, nor will it ever exist..." "There's a conflict in every human heart, between the rational and irrational, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. Sometimes, the dark side overcomes what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature."

Director: Kathryn Bigelow | Stars: Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Mark Strong

Votes: 318,984 | Gross: $95.72M

6/10 - Good, not great. Held my attention, but just barely at times. Really long. Segments of bad acting from Jessica Chastain, even though she's great in everything else. The personal drama parts were excruciatingly bad. Wasn't blown away overall, but better for having seen it. -- 2/12/13

32. Skyfall (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

81 Metascore

James Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench

Votes: 731,246 | Gross: $304.36M

7/10 - Cinematography was outstanding: opening sequence, the silhouetted fight scene in Shanghai.... Other great scenes like the casino with Berenice Marlohe as the Bond girl (wish she hadn't died so soon), the scorpion at the beach bar... Too long. Ending was slightly cheesy. Classic Bond wit was missing. -- 2/17/13

33. Chasing Mavericks (2012)

Votes: 34,538 | Gross: $6.00M

4/10 - Boring, dopey characters. Quirky, "real-life" dialogue didn't really work. The scenery of North Carolina was nice, but depressing as it was eternally winter. -- 5/21/13

Votes: 597,112 | Gross: $144.84M

7/10 - Wasn't 100% on the same page the way Gatsby and Nick were played. Toby Mcguire didn't really do it for me... It was a grand production which was visually stimulating, and Baz didn't go over the top as usual. It was long, but offered just enough compelling elements to endure. -- 8/27/13

7/10 - I liked it, but it was a depressing, long movie without a payoff. Bradley Cooper was weak in his role. I didn't really care too much about the characters, no big statement was made, I will probably forget this one very easily. The motorcycle and bank robbery scenes were cool, but other than that, it wasn't like Drive, where the emotion lingered long after the credits. -- 8/27/13

We meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna.

Director: Richard Linklater | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick, Ariane Labed

Votes: 172,203 | Gross: $8.11M

5/10 - It was bearable at first, the quick dialogue, a few zingers, but once it's evident Celine and Jesse are just going to keep arguing, it got boring. The acting is incredible (15 min takes, how do they remember all those lines?!), but Celine has become bitter and somewhat unlikable, and Jesse still acts like a pretentious child. Didn't have the romance and optimism of the first two in the series. The beginning up to the group dinner and the very end were ok, the whole middle was a chore to watch. -- 9/4/13
