The films in contention for the 2023 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” Our current odds show “Elvis” (10/3) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (37/10), “Babylon” (9/2), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2), and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is her 12th and could result in her fourth win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), and “Cruella” (2022). She would be only the fifth costumer to achieve as many victories, after Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Milena Canonero, and Colleen Atwood. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011).

The Academy Museum’s Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 is not to be missed. Not only does the exhibition celebrate Black representation in film, it serves as an important reminder and lesson about the contributions of Black filmmakers and stars to the world of cinema.
Opening Aug. 21, seven galleries make up the exhibit exploring Oscar Micheaux’s low-budget dramas in the silent-film era to the works of Melvin Van Peebles.
The exhibition also introduces audiences to stars largely unknown to mainstream moviegoers — Ralph Cooper, Clarence Brooks and Francine Everett — alongside iconic screen legends Paul Robeson, Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier and Lena Horne.
Poiter’s Oscar for “Lillies of the Field” is just one of the many artifacts on display in this historic exhibition. Alongside the award are tap shoes worn by the Nicholas Brothers and one of Louis Armstrong’s trumpets.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).

Years in the making! The glory of MGM on parade! Enough studio resources to film twenty pictures were expended on this paean to showman Florenz Ziegfeld. It’s really Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Technicolor valentine to itself, showing off the studio’s enormous stable of musical talent, along with various of its comic performers. Arthur Freed and Louis B. Mayer’s notion of ‘something for everyone’ results in weird stack of grandiose musical numbers and mostly weak comedy. The biggest draw is the incredible color cinematography that peeks through in three or four jaw-droppingly elaborate musical spectacles. The picture is a workout to find the artistic limits of the Technicolor system.

“Are her bra straps dirty?” “When she goes to bed, where are those clothes? Do they fall on the floor? Does she care about them? How much do they cost? Does she hang them up?”
Those are all questions Ann Roth, whose work can next be seen on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” set to be released Dec. 18, asks herself as she reads a script. And the 89-year-old Oscar- and Tony-winning and Emmy-nominated costume designer has been doing plenty of reading lately. She’s working on Universal’s adaptation of megahit musical “Wicked” and has A24 drama “Humans,” directed by Stephen Karam and based on his award-winning one-act play, due to bow next year.
Roth, who numbers some 130 film and television credits, has worked with Meryl Streep, George C. Wolfe, Scott Rudin, Sidney Lumet, Neil Simon, Mike Nichols and Todd Black — all of whom she considers friends, which, she says, is...

Sandy Powell‘s greatest enemy is herself. For the third time in her career, the three-time Oscar-winning costume designer has received two nominations in the same year, for “The Favourite” and “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Powell first competed against herself 20 years ago for “Shakespeare in Love” and “Velvet Goldmine,” winning for the former. Three years ago, she nabbed double bids for her sartorial work in “Carol” and “Cinderella,” losing to Jenny Beavan for “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Since the academy eliminated the separate black-and-white and color costume design categories 51 years ago, no one has earned more double bids than Powell.
This year, the prolific designer is up against Mary Zophres (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther”) and Alexandra Byrne (“Mary Queen of Scots”). In our super early winner predictions, Powell is tipped to triumph for her creations in “The Favourite.”

When it comes to the best costume design category at the Academy Awards there are few who shine brighter than the legendary Colleen Atwood. This talented woman has been nominated 12 times — including this year — and, out of those times, has taken home the trophy three times so far. Let’s take a deep dive into Atwood’s career and see how she stacks against her peers.
As mentioned above, the 68-year-old costume designer has been up for numerous Oscars. Films for which Atwood was just nominated for include: 1994’s Little Women, 1998’s Beloved, 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, 2004’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, 2007’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, 2009’s Nine, 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, and 2014’s Into the Woods. “As far back as I can remember I loved clothes,” Sandy Powell, the great costume designer — Oscar-nominated this year for both Carol and Cinderella — tells me as we sit down to record an episode of the ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. Should Powell win for one film or the other, the 55-year-old Brit, who has 12 Oscar noms to her name, would join four legends of her profession —Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Charles LeMaire and Milena Canonero — as the only costume designers ever awarded four or more Oscars. Honorary Award: Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth among dozens of women bypassed by the Academy (photo: Honorary Award non-winner Gloria Swanson in 'Sunset Blvd.') (See previous post: "Honorary Oscars: Doris Day, Danielle Darrieux Snubbed.") Part three of this four-part article about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Honorary Award bypassing women basically consists of a long, long — and for the most part quite prestigious — list of deceased women who, some way or other, left their mark on the film world. Some of the names found below are still well known; others were huge in their day, but are now all but forgotten. Yet, just because most people (and the media) suffer from long-term — and even medium-term — memory loss, that doesn't mean these women were any less deserving of an Honorary Oscar. So, among the distinguished female film professionals in Hollywood and elsewhere who have passed away without...

Did you know that only one other Oscar ceremony has ever been held on a March 2nd? That'd be March 2nd, 1944 which crowned Casablanca 1943's best picture. Let's hope Oscar chooses as well tonight.
May your favorites lose tonight ... if they're different than mine! Kisses.
Though Casablanca is one of those rare pictures that virtually everyone loves, it actually only won three of its eight Oscar nominations that night: Picture, Director (Michael Curtiz), and Screenplay. Only Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940) won fewer Oscars among the Best Pictures of the 1940s with just two statues. So I don't wanna see any online snarking if 12 Years a Slave goes home with only a 2 or 3 statues including the big one. Spreading the wealth is not a new thing and i'd argue it's a healthier thing for the movies, too.

Bright and early this morning they announced that Bette Midler will be performing at the Oscars for the first time. That's shocking to type since she's had so many great movie musical moments in her career and she's obviously been to the Oscars as a nominee or to present. But, alas, her material was generally not original* and thus unnominated in the one category that regularly prompts performances.
Though it seems highly likely that they'll have her as underscore songstress for the In Memoriam visuals (zzz. Love that segment but it's never about the singer so they're interchangeable... something you can't usually say for Bette Midler) It's more fun to fantasize about recreating one of her musical moments from a movie on the main stage. Irene SharaffIf Catherine Martin wins an Oscar this year for her work on The Great Gatsby, she will join prolific costume Designer Orry-Kelly as Australia’s most Oscared individual. If Martin wins both of her nominations? She will become the first Australian to ever win more than three statues (having already won the same two for Moulin Rouge! 12 years ago). We’re not here to talk about Martin, nor Orry-Kelly really, but that’s an interesting statistic nonetheless. One of Orry-Kelly’s wins was for An American in Paris, which he won alongside Walter Plunkett and the main subject of this entry, Irene Sharaff.
Sharaff was a 15-time Oscar nominee for her work as a costume designer and was also nominated once for art direction, which certainly places her as one of the designers' favorites. She doesn’t have the famous name of, say, Edith Head or contemporaries Sandy Powell,...

Will it be 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, or American Hustle? That’s the question even Oscar voters are asking themselves as the most contentious race in years gets underway. The nominations announcement set the field, but in a year of snubs for Robert Redford, Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, and Tom Hanks (twice), anything can happen — and probably will.
It’s a year of first-timers, second chances — and a three-way battle for Best Picture
The roster for the 86th annual Academy Awards is packed with contenders who were on no one’s radar just 12 months ago: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), 84-year-old...

Richard Burton's diaries only sparkle occasionally, most notably when he's demolishing one of his illustrious contemporaries
Richard Burton died in August 1984 at the age of 58, shortly before the premiere of Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which he gave his best performance for more than a decade as Orwell's totalitarian apparatchik O'Brien. His diaries cover some 44 years, from his early second world war schooldays in south Wales to the spring of 1983. In May that year he appeared on Broadway in a poorly received production of Coward's Private Lives with his ex-wife Elizabeth Taylor, and on 3 July he married his fourth wife in a Las Vegas hotel. A hefty brick-sized book, it brings to mind the telegram Warner Brothers boss Jack L Warner sent to the director Mervyn LeRoy, who'd inquired whether he'd got around to reading Hervey Allen's blockbuster Anthony Adverse. "Read it?" Warner replied. "I can't even lift it."

Child actor who became a Hollywood film star known for her dazzling beauty and her eight marriages
The film star Elizabeth Taylor, who has died of heart failure aged 79, was in the public eye from the age of 11 and remained there even decades after her last hit movie. She managed to keep people fascinated, by her incandescent beauty, her courage, her open-natured character, her self-deprecating humour, her eight marriages (two of them to the actor Richard Burton), her many brushes with death, her seesawing weight, her diamonds and her humanitarian causes, all of which often obscured the reason why she was famous in the first place – she had a tantalising screen presence, in films including A Place in the Sun (1951), Giant (1956), Cat On a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Butterfield 8 (1961), Cleopatra (1963) and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966).

Later this month, Turner Classic Movies will be hosting its first-ever TCM Classic Film Festival. In the span of three days, attendees will be treated not just to some of the greatest films ever made, but to some of the most stylish as well. Here at Little Gold Men, we’re featuring some of these fashionable flicks, along with our tips to work a little movie magic into your own wardrobe. If costume designer Irene Sharaff were alive today, she would have been able to tell us if the elaborate costume jewelry in 1963’s Cleopatra was an original detail of the script, or if Elizabeth Taylor, infamous for her love affair with gems, brought her own sparkle to the character. Sharaff was one of three costumes designers on the film, dedicated exclusively to Cleo’s wardrobe. Employing three designers was then typical for such a big production. (This one broke...

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – Two of the most beloved musicals of all time recently made their debut on Blu-Ray with extravagant collections of special features, beautiful HD, and crystal clear audio. All musical fans will want to add the Best Picture-winning “An American in Paris” and “Gigi” to their Blu-Ray collection.
One of my favorite musicals, 1951’s “An American in Paris,” an Oscar-winner for Best Picture, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Score, and Screenplay, is such an essential film to the history of the musical genre that it seems like a no-brainer for HD Blu-Ray. It’s an undeniable classic featuring one of the great stars of the musical, Gene Kelly, at his athletic peak and includes the debut of the magical Leslie Caron.
