Although I was almost tempted to refuse to jot anything down here in my notes alongside this silly, Italian poster for the film (SHORN OF THE FILM'S TITLE NONETHELESS!!), SUSPIRIA remains (and we're talking 98 years AFTER it's initial release back in 1977) the most beautifully photographed, uncommonly psychedelic, colourful, art-directed, shockingly gory, illogically practically storyless, not to mention L O U D E S T mother *beep* horror film to have ever appeared on so very many silver screens all around the globe in memory (recent or otherwise.) Dario Argento must've gotten his biggest, bestest nut right around this time in his career (immediately following the cue of his other mid-70's, rightfully & justly praised thriller PROFONDO ROSSO (DEEP RED)) and just never had it in him to aspire toward anything of such cinematic virtuosity, perfectly realized and sustained tension & such a deft hand at effortlessly creating crowd-pleasing pictures especially suited to movie lovers sensebilities that it seems down right impossible that this is THE SAME Dario Argento who for the last (almost) thirty years has been churning out the most mundane, largely artless, vacuously empty films one after another, which are so incredibly dissimilar in style, content and film-making artistry to his previous classic art/horror films that one would assume the real Dario Argento must have been quietly assassinated and replaced with a fake lookalike years and years ago (TENEBRAE & OPERA notwithstanding!) But, we've also got Jessica Harper's only ever starring role, late-in-their-career's Alida Valli and Joan Bennett co-starring, some of the most spellbinding cinematography you've ever seen in your life by Luchiano Tovoli, the last footage ever processed on original, lushly-hued Technicolor imbibition 3-strip color process film stock from the halcyon Cinemascope days and (I will re-iterate) the L O U D E S T, most (concurrently either) mezmerizing or far too strong and intense (as in industrial) avant-garde musical accompaniment ever composed for a motion picture, compliments of those bad-boys of Italian progressive hard rock Goblin (formerly Cherry 5), who went on to become synonymous with Argento's pictures.

One of Billy Wilder's strongest films (and that's saying a whole lot right there), SUNSET BLVD was effectively Gloria Swanson, Cecil B. De Mille & Erich von Stroheim's return to the limelight in the grandest sense of Hollywood-comeback traditions as well as also being each of their swan songs in front of or behind the cameras... Bill Holden did just fine here in his turn as the down & out screenwriter who prostitutes himself out to forgotten, aging silent star Norma Desmond, whom he takes up residence with in her once-grand, decaying Sunset mansion ostensibly to aid in editing and professionally rewriting her script for SALOME, which she is picturing as a win-win project with her portraying the title role and with foolish certainty she knows for sure Mr. De Mille will agree to direct for her comeback in grand style. Norma is a sad, sad, childishly optimistic ghost living alone in her big old Hollywood mansion, still dreaming that the world has never forgiven her for abandoning the silver screen, and that, just as her incorrect, inappropriately intimate & overly-possessive stranglehold over the Holden character, whom she truly believes to be her very own boy toy and property, surely, in the light of day, just as the playwrite's character puts so succinctly, there she is waving to the merely imagined crowds of adoring fans, amid her own over-inflated self-importance, waving and blowing kisses to a parade that has long-since passed her by. It is both a darkly humourous and inherently tragic dramatic ploy that we are forced to witness the delusions, grandeur, sweet sincerity and, ultimately the last gasp of of fragile and sequestered mind as it teeters on the very precipice of ultimately succumbing to the true face belonging to Norma Desmond's really heartbreaking fall into ruinous, eternal, shattered psychosis and insanity.
