For readers of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, extravagant French adaptation “The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady” packs its share of surprises: killing off important characters, sparing others and reimagining allegiances that have stood for nearly two centuries. For viewers of “Part I: D’Artagnan,” however, this swashbuckling sequel feels totally in keeping with what came before. Even the twists track, paying off what amounts to a nearly four-hour investment (not counting however many months audiences may have waited to see how the story ends).
Loyalty — to the crown, to one another, but not necessarily to the source material — remains the driving theme of director Martin Bourboulon’s blockbuster treatment, which tapped French megastars Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï and Romain Duris as titular trio Athos, Porthos and Aramis. The second film opens with fourth musketeer D’Artagnan (François Civil) in a coffin, though he’s not dead, merely captured by traitors who...

Adapting a widely popular classic like The Three Musketeers in cinema is never an easy thing. With as many as seven film adaptations of Alexander Dumas’ iconic novel before, director Martin Bourboulon had to do something extraordinary to make the latest two-part French adaptation work. And to think he has actually achieved that! Of course, we haven’t seen the second half of the epic saga yet, but if we go by the glorious first part, titled The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, it can fairly be said that Bourboulon’s adaptation is not only on the right track; it might just end up being the greatest. In this article, we’re going to shed some light on the cliffhanger ending of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan. But a quick summary of the events before does seem like a necessity.

Photo Credit: Shutterstock The critics weren’t kind when The Three Musketeers hit theaters in 1993. “All for one and one for all” might as well have been their motto! Despite its cult following today, that Rotten Tomatoes score still sits at a measly 30%. Back then, though, it looked like a hit waiting to happen – the cast was stacked with rising stars like Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Oliver Platt. O’Donnell, fresh off the film, told us working with a cast like that was a dream come true. While there are many different reality TV competition shows, Johnny Bananas feels MTV’s The Challenge “doesn’t get the respect it deserves.”
The seven-time winner of MTV’s show was among the cast members for The Traitors 2, which just wrapped up its finale on Peacock.
Appearing with him was familiar castmate Chris “Ct” Tamburello, who was one of two winners of The Traitors 2.
In a surprising finish, Ct shared the prize of over $200,000 with another star from MTV’s Real World and The Challenge, Trishelle Cannatella.
The MTV stars outlasted a starstudded group that included former cast members from Big Brother, Real Housewives, The Bachelor, and Survivor, among others.
Bananas recently had Trishelle on his Death, Taxes & Bananas podcast to discuss the finale and her exciting win, which he was extremely happy to see.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to Bruno Dumont’s “The Empire,” a sci-fi satire starring Anamaria Vartolomei (“Happening”), Camille Cottin (“Call My Agent!”), Lyna Khoudri (“The Three Musketeers”) and Fabrice Luchini.
“The Empire” just world premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Jury Prize. The movie marks Dumont’s follow up to “France,” a dark comedy starring Léa Seydoux which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Three Days of the Condor" is one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers that came out of '70s cinema. The New Hollywood movement was in full effect with audiences turning to gritty, low-budget films for thrills outside of the failing studio system. Sydney Pollack was one of the foremost leaders of the cinematic era, and "Three Days of the Condor" was one of the final entries into its canon. The filmmaker's 1970 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" earned him his first Academy Award nomination, so "Three Days" was a highly anticipated follow-up.

U.S. films topped the French admissions charts in 2023, with Universal’s The Super Mario Brothers leading the way with 7.15 million admissions, followed by Wbd’s cultural hit Barbie with 5.80 million and Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water with 5.18 million. It took a lot to bring "Superman" and "Superman II" to the big screen. Director Richard Donner and producer Alexander Salkind didn't get off to the best start, with Donner having to salvage a truly disastrous script that Salkind evidently felt was "perfect." But once "Superman" debuted in 1978, things started looking up. Or so it seemed.
With "Superman," Donner helped invent the modern blockbuster, setting a blueprint for every superhero movie that would follow and breaking box office records in the process. What made "Superman" an even more impressive feat was that during production, Donner had simultaneously shot most of the sequel. "Superman" and "Superman II" were filmed simultaneously, which meant the crew worked from a hefty script that required Donner to film scenes for both movies alongside one another.
Unfortunately, in order to make the "Superman" release date, Donner and co. had to stop filming "Superman II" before it was finished.

Guillaume Canet’s ambitious 64M euros (70M) production Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom was on track to be the top opener at the French box office on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen whether the film can match the success of its predecessors.
Pathé released the title on 950 screens across France in the biggest theatrical launch of early 2023 for local productions. The mini-major bankrolled the film and is also a producer alongside Alain Attal’s Tresor Films and Yohan Baiada at Les Enfants Terribles.
In first figures for the Paris region, which can be a bellwether for box office performance across the rest of the country, especially for mainstream local productions like Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, the film scored the strongest opening.
By 2 pm local time, the film had drawn 9,091 spectators in 84 theaters, split between 3,274 admissions on 29 screens in the city and 5,817 admissions in outer Paris.

Director Richard Lester, prior to his work on "Superman II" (1980) and "Superman III" (1983), was better known as a director of musical films. His first feature, 1962's "It's Trad, Dad!" was a youthsploitation picture about hip British teens getting into the underground Dixieland jazz scene and featured 27 songs. He followed that with a sequel to the Peter Sellers comedy "The Mouse That Roared" (about the world's smallest nation unwittingly conquering the United States in war), a space race farce called "The Mouse on the Moon." This led directly to two film collaborations with The Beatles, including "A Hard Day's Night," one of the best films ever made, and "Help!," which is quite silly but rather enjoyable. Lester also directed the utterly hilarious film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with Zero Mostel, before moving into a series of frothy swashbuckling blockbusters like...

Pathé and Chapter 2, a Mediawan company, are set to reteam with “Three Musketeers” director Martin Bourboulon on a riveting thriller set in the backdrop of the fall of Kabul and the takeover by the Taliban.
The film is an adaptation of “13 days, 13 Nights, in the Hell of Kabul,” a sprawling real-life account of the events written by commander Mohamed Bida and published by Denoël last month.
Bourboulon, who recently completed shooting “The Three Musketeers,” a big-budget, two-part saga based on Alexandre Dumas’ masterpiece, will be filming the movie in French and English with an immersive and ultra-realistic style.
Commander Bida oversaw the exfiltration of the French Embassy and the local population fleeing the new extremist regime.
In his book, Bida explains how in August 2021, he and 10 elite police officers provided security at the French embassy in Kabul, where 500 people were sheltered and seeking to escape the country. Bida ended up...

What role you remember first when you think of Angela Lansbury speaks to how old you are — with an extraordinary career spanning more than 80 years, Lansbury brought indelible performances to generations of filmgoers, stage fans, and TV watchers.
Perhaps your go-to is Jessica Fletcher, the TV sleuth she played from 1984-1996. Or maybe you get a shiver of delight thinking of her Broadway turns as the madcap Mame Dennis of “Mame” or the duplicitous Mrs. Lovett of “Sweeney Todd.” Some fans embrace her as the loving mother-turned-teapot in the animated “Beauty and the Beast” while others get a cold sweat recalling her ruthless mommy in the original “The Manchurian Candidate.”
There are no wrong answers here; for most of the 20th century and a decent chunk of the 21st, Angela Lansbury did it all — drama, comedy, musical, stage, screen, warm, terrifying — and she did it brilliantly.

It is not a surprise to learn that Quentin Tarantino is a lifelong admirer of Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974). Filmed as one movie but released in two volumes during the early ‘70s—a concept Tarantino popularized further some decades later with Kill Bill—the Musketeer movie(s) stood among the most popular action and comedy films of their day, and featured the type of swaggering bravado performances from the likes of Oliver Reed and Faye Dunaway that have long appealed to Tarantino’s sensibilities.
Nonetheless, it was still a surprise that when discussing those movies on a recent podcast, Tarantino revealed his love for Lester’s Musketeer duology is also responsible for one of his few fears in cinema: watching the belated sequel to that sprawling effort, 1989’s The Return of the Musketeers. While appearing on the Unspooled podcast alongside Roger Avary to promote their own podcast,...

We've got an exclusive sneak peek at Ragdoll Season 1 Episode 3, premiering Thursday, November 25 on AMC+.
Rose's erratic behavior raises questions for Edmunds, but Baxter won't listen.
In the clip, Edmunds and Rose work alone, trying to track the killer's movements.
That gives Edmunds time to quiz Rose, but she winds up being a lot more forthcoming than getting information from Rose.
We learn all kinds of things about Rose, including her high school habits and how she hid away from social situations.
Her interest in astrology is also revealed as she pegs Rose for a Cancer.
Without missing a beat, he says, "Oh, cheers," as he believed she was assessing him as a cancer, not as a Cancer.
There are so many brilliant little comedic moments with Ragdoll, which makes it unbelievably watchable despite the dark content.
Meanwhile, Baxter is trying to protect the third victim, but with the killer one step ahead,...

So let’s be honest, The Three Musketeers is a great story and has been told many upon many times. It might be time to stop already though, but that doesn’t seem to register in Netflix’s mindset. While the streaming giant has had a lot of success lately with the titles it’s been creating and sending out to the general public, it seems to be taking a different tactic on this time-honored story and is already comparing it, in a way, to a Mission Impossible-style theme that might make it a bit more interesting. There’s a small problem with doing such

Mark Bramble, the Tony Award-nominated librettist of Broadway’s hit musicals 42nd Street and Barnum, died Wednesday at a Baltimore hospital of complications related to cardiovascular hypertension. He was 68.
His death was announced by his longtime business manager and friend Richard Koenigsberg.
In addition to writing books for musicals, Bramble, a Maryland native, was a producer and director. He was Tony-nominated for his direction of the 2001 Broadway revival of 42nd Street, and though he lost to The Producers‘ Susan Stroman, 42nd Street won that year for best musical revival.
Bramble began his theatrical career in 1971 as an apprentice in the office of famed producer David Merrick. By 1980 he was a recognized Broadway presence in his own right as the librettist of Barnum, a musical about showman P.T. Barnum with songs by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart. The show brought Bramble a Tony nomination, as it did for its featured actress: Glenn Close.

Michel Legrand, who died in Paris Saturday at the age of 86, was among the most renowned film composers and songwriters of our time. He won three Oscars and five Grammys, and many of his songs have entered the pantheon as among the greatest of the 20th century. Here are 10 great film music moments from the career of this French genius:
1. “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (1964). The close collaboration of Legrand and filmmaker Jacques Demy produced this stunning, all-sung romantic drama about a star-crossed couple. It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and ultimately earned five Oscar nominations (three of them for the score). “I Will Wait for You” was the biggest song hit that emerged and quickly became a standard:
2. “The Young Girls of Rochefort” (1967). Legrand and Demy reunited for this splashy, colorful musical that added Americans Gene Kelly and George Chakiris to the usual French cast. The tuneful score...

Michel Legrand, three-time Oscar winner and composer of such classic film songs as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “I Will Wait for You,” “You Must Believe in Spring” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?,” along with the groundbreaking musical score for “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” has died. He was 86.
Legrand died at his home early Saturday in Paris, his publicist told Agence France-Presse. His wife, French actress Macha Meril, was at his side.
His most recent film score was “The Other Side of the Wind,” composed for Orson Welles’ last film, which was finally completed and released in 2018. Although relatively scarce, horror movies directed by women are out there. You may have to turn over a few rocks to know who they are and their material might be a little more difficult to get your hands on, but these directors deserve just as much attention and scrutiny as their male counterparts, who have long dominated the genre. The following discusses selections of female directors’ forays into the business of terror. (This post contains spoilers)
Antonia Bird
The late director Antonia Bird’s Ravenous is a bizarre amalgamation of humor and horror that explores cannibalism with warped nuance. A film version of Flashman is in the works at 20th Century Fox.
The Victorian character was created for Tom Brown's Schooldays, before author George MacDonald Fraser continued the adventures of the bully as Sir Harry Flashman - a cowardly soldier.
Variety reports that the studio is in the process of developing the feature with Ridley Scott's Scott Free and Peter Chernin's Chernin Entertainment.
The book series ran as 11 novels and one short story collection between 1969 and 2005.
Fraser himself was also a script writer, working on screenplays for The Three Musketeers, Octopussy and Red Sonja.

For every animated movie that gets made, there are dozens more that never make it. Mark looks at some failed Disney projects...
In the age of the internet, Hollywood studios are much quicker to announce the projects they have in development than they used to be. Now that the demand is there, there's a huge turnover of movie-related news every day, and if you follow it in any significant way, there are probably a whole bunch of projects that you've heard about, maybe even gotten excited about, that never came to fruition.
Still, it's not only via the easier availability of such information that we know about projects that never came to be. At a studio like Disney, projects will get as far as being fully developed in animatic form before falling apart, and the artefacts left behind from such abridged projects have made for some fascinating reading.

Julie Delpy is nominated for an Oscar this year along side Before Midnight co-writers Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke for Best Adapted Screenplay. No one expects the film to win despite a large audience that would love to see just that. Win or lose, however, Delpy has already said her piece in an interview with France's "So Film" magazine (via The Daily Mail) in which she slams the Academy as old white men that "haven't done anything in a long time." "It's 90 per cent white men over 70 who need money because they haven't done anything in a long time," Delpy said while adding, "You just need to give them two or three presents and they're in your pocket. It doesn't mean anything to me, so I don't really care if there are women in the selection process." And she didn't stop there, unloading on Bob and Harvey Weinstein saying they've "killed" independent cinema.

Julie Delpy has hit out at Hollywood award ceremonies.
The French actress dismissed the Oscars and Golden Globes, and believes that the Hollywood movie scene has killed off the independents.
"The problem with certain festivals, the people in charge always choose the same people," Delpy told So Film.
"They choose their friends, even if the movie's crap. That's what annoys me the most. But a festival is a festival: awards, prizes, decorations. You need to see who votes and who chooses the movies.
"We have the Golden Globes. If you could see it, you wouldn't believe that there's anything good about it. The same goes for the Oscars. It's 90 per cent white men over 70 who need money because they haven't done anything in a long time.

After making a splash with a fantastic performance in The Book Thief, young Sophie Nelisse has lined up a new adaptation, this time of a book geared towards kids. Variety has word that Nelisse will lead The Great Gilly Hopkins, an adaptation of the Newbery Award-winning book of the same name by Katherine Paterson. The book follows a wisecracking, gum-chewing 12-year-old named Gilly (Nelisse), moved from foster home to foster home, outwitting them all. But when placed in the home of Maime Trotter, the most unorthodox foster mom yet (Kathy Bates), Gilly fights her way out, but her life takes an unexpected turn. Nelisse will also be surrounded by some impressive talents like Glenn Close, Danny Glover and Octavia Spencer. They'll all be directed by Stephen Herek, who's heyday was in the 90s with films like Mr. Holland's Opus, The Three Musketeers and 101 Dalmatians (which saw Close as Disney's iconic...

It’s all for one, one for all, all for love, and more for you. (Some of that may have been written by Alexandre Dumas. But probably not all of it.) Yes, this week on Mousterpiece Cinema, Josh and Gabe are talking about the 1993 adaptation of the classic story The Three Musketeers, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, Charlie Sheen, and Tim Curry. And this week, it’s just Josh and Gabe–they’re guest-free and debating whether they’re Athos and Porthos, Athos and Aramis, or some combination in between. They debate the 90s-era stardom of Chris O’Donnell, Kiefer Sutherland’s young-Jack-Bauer-like line readings, and exactly who needed to die in this movie. And yes, according to at least one of your hosts, someone did need to die. Find out who in the new podcast!

Game Of Thrones' Kit Harington leads the cast, as Pompeii is on the verge of eruption in Paul W S Anderson's latest. Trailer here...
Heading to cinemas next February is the new film from director Paul W S Anderson, Pompeii. He's sandwiched this in between Resident Evil movies (much as he did with The Three Musketeers), and this time, he's telling the story of an enslaved gladiator who finds love with a noble woman, just as Mount Vesuvius is set to erupt and destroy Pompeii.
The film stars Kiefer Sutherland, Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris and Jessica Lucas. The movie is currently set for release in the UK on February 28th 2014. And we've got the first teaser trailer to give us a taste what to expect. Yep, we're at the point of the year where trailers for 2014 movies start coming.

On Friday we got to hear from Director Raja Gosnell on his sequel to 2011 movie The Smurfs and it’s now only a couple of days away that The Smurfs 2 hits UK cinemas. As well as Raja we got to sit down to chat one of the Producers on the sequel Jordan Kerner. Jordan’s filmography is rather extensive and includes the likes of The Three Musketeers, George of the Jungle, Inspector Gadget to name but a few and has a keen eye when it comes to making movies for this sort of demographic.
We speak to Jordan about the success of the first movie and taking him by surprise as well as the challenges of shooting in Paris, where the technology is going in these Smurf movies and whether this technology continues to surprise him in the films that they make, especially using this advanced animation that is ever changing.

Oliver Reed as Athos in The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester, 1973/1974, UK):
These films were actually shot all at once but ultimately released as two separate films telling one long story. As the musketeer with a dark past, Oliver Reed provides a lot of the heart and soul in these very entertaining and well-made films. Technically, since we have to isolate one film for our fantasy nomination, it would be The Four Musketeers as his role is more prominent in that film. Reed’s reunion scene with Faye Dunaway’s Milady is superb as is Reed’s intense swordplay with an array of opponents including Christopher Lee. An underrated actor whose career was damaged by well-documented alcohol problems and notorious off-screen behavior, Reed still logged in some truly incredible acting performances over the course of his career. His portrayal of Athos is definitely one of them.
