Comic Book Review - Mars Attacks #6

20 December 2012 11:15 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Luke Owen reviews the latest issue of Mars Attacks...

"An exciting new story arc starts here! As human ramp up their defenses, the Martians unleash a new weapon from their arsenal... the freeze ray! Don’t miss any of the action in this runaway hit series!"

Idw’s Mars Attacks re-launch for me has been a bit slow to get off the ground. Here we are in issue #6 and still so little has been accomplished. It just seems like we’ve been watching the same invasion over and over again. Call it a slow burn if you will, but I call it unnecessary padding.

That’s not to say that writing a Mars Attacks story is easy because it probably isn’t. But one of the plus sides of the (albeit mediocre) Godzilla series is that you follow a set of characters as they interact with the established kaiju. But »

The Found Footage Project

Commenting on the Critics with Simon Columb...

Charlie Lyne writes for The Guardian about how found footage films are dominating cinema - and the functional problems with this...

"The central conceit of the found footage genre – fictional characters, be they priests, partygoers or palaeontologists, suddenly being struck by the inexplicable urge to immortalise the drama of their lives on film – can be a difficult one to sell to an audience, but that hasn't stopped film-makers in their hundreds trying their hands."

My own experience with found footage films dates back to The Blair Witch Project. Though I didn't see the film at the cinema, I recall buying the film on DVD and still, my friends and I were unsure whether it was a true story. As a keen camper in my younger years, I related to the woodland-walking, awkward-bags-on-back and within-tent discussions. Beyond Fright: Dredd Blasts Onto Blu-ray, 3D, & DVD Jan 8th 2013!

19 November 2012 8:22 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Dredd is absolutely one of the most entertaining films of the year. I’m being completely sincere. When I make my “Best Of” list for 2012, Dredd will unashamedly be a part of it. The second adaptation of 2000 Ad’s long running British comic book, Dredd is a transplant of 80′s cinema that somehow (and thankfully) happened to be released in 2012. It’s gritty, pulpy, bloody, and action-fucking-packed. Basically, it would be deemed a cult classic if Cannon had made it 25 years ago.

It’s an absolute shame that no one saw it in theaters (thus severely hurting the chances of a sequel), but you’ll have the chance to bring this home January 8th when it hits Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, & DVD! Seriously, do yourself a favor by renting/buying this so you can see Karl Urban scowl & eviscerate baddies as the titular Dredd. Read the press release below and mark my words, »

Dredd Hitting On January 8th With A Nice Package Of Extras

16 November 2012 12:46 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Dredd is heading to stores, and the date to mark down is January 8th. If you’ve been on board for the podcast you know that I’m looking forward to catching this one again. A surprisingly solid bit of action entertainment, and a film more clever than anyone would have ever guessed by looking at the original, Dredd took me by surprise, and I was a tough sell.

Look for it, mark your calendar, and while you wait give a listen to the podcast review here.

It looks like there are going to be some very cool special features as well, including a motion comic and a featurette that cover Dredd in and out of the films.

Blu-ray 3D, DVD Release: Dredd

Blu-ray 3D, DVD and Digital Release Date: Jan. 8, 2013

Price: DVD $29.95, Blu-ray 3D $39.99

Studio: Lionsgate

Decent reviews failed to bring moviegoers into theaters for science-fiction movie Dredd, the 2012 adaptation of the comic book.

Set in a violent futuristic America, Dredd stars Karl Urban (Priest) as the titular urban cop, or Judge, who has the powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Feared throughout his city, Dredd is faced with getting rid of a dangerous drug called “So-Mo” and the sadistic crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Headey, TV’s Game of Thrones) who is using it to take over the city.

Olivia Thirlby (Being Flynn) also stars in the film, which was directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and written by Alex Garland (Never Let Me Go).

Critics liked Dredd much better than the 1995 adaptation of the comic book, which starred Sylvester Stallone. USA Today critic Claudia Puig said, “While not for the squeamish, »

‘Dredd’ is Coming….Home

15 November 2012 11:48 AM, PST | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Lionsgate’s Dredd didn’t do too hot in the box office this past September, which is a shame as I thought the film was a lot of fun. As a fan of the more subversive and ultra-violent comic book characters like The Punisher, Dredd took no prisoners. Using a gimmick of beautiful slow-motion due to a drug being used in the film called…well, slo-mo, Dredd was simply one of the better 3D films I have seen all year, plus it was a blast to watch. Most of you missed it in the theaters but lucky for you, you can check it out here in a couple of months at home in 3D or 2D. Read below for all the details!

Remix: POTUSes — Movie Presidents of the United States

6 November 2012 10:31 AM, PST | Underground Film Journal | See recent Underground Film Journal news »

In a perfect video to watch on Election Day — or really any day for that matter — video mixologists Wreck & Salvage have put together an astounding compendium of clips of U.S. presidents from sci-fi flicks, comedies, drama, action movies and more. If you have trouble matching each Potus with each movie, below is a handy guide provided by W&S of the 51 films they’ve cribbed from.

The clips, of course, aren’t strung together willy-nilly. There’s a definite arc, flow and rhythm that provide a quasi narrative. Most movie presidents are there to deliver the “oh shit” news to the country — aliens are going to kill us all, an asteroid is going to kill us all, the economy’s in the toilet, all plant life is dying, etc. You know the “oh shit” news is coming when you hear the clichéd refrain, “Good evening, my fellow Americans.” (Actually, »

Lff Review: Dans La Maison (In The House)

9 October 2012 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: François Ozon

Cast: Fabrice Luchini, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ernst Umhauer, Emmanuelle Seigner

Running time: 105 minutes

Plot: A depressed literature teacher has his enthusiasm reignited by the voyeuristic and unsettling writing of a mysterious and brilliant student. As teacher and pupil confer, the line between reality and fiction blurs as the boy works his way into the lives of a middle class family, all for the sake of a good story.

Dans La Maison is exactly how the average punter imagines French cinema to be; cerebral, philosophical, artistic and not for fans of Michael Bay. And that is a very high compliment indeed. Ozon’s latest is a frothy yet complex piece that explores the nature of narrative, perception and reality. And it’s funny too.

We are instantly endeared to Germain (Fabrice Luchini, star of Ozon’s Potiche), the downhearted academic who is drawn to the one decent writer in his literature class. »
