Alabama musician, songwriter, and actor Donnie Fritts, an architect of Southern soul music whose songs were covered by dozens of artists from Waylon Jennings to Dusty Springfield, died Tuesday night. His publicist confirmed Fritts’ death at the age of 76.
Fritts’ friend and fellow songwriter Gary Nicholson posted a tribute to Fritts on Facebook early Wednesday morning, writing in part, “There aren’t words to describe what his loving friendship has meant to me through the years, so many songs and stories, it’s gonna take awhile to process this one.

This week in 1993, two of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of all-time, Willie Nelson and Paul Simon, appeared together as musical guests on Saturday Night Live. The previous month, Nelson had celebrated his 60th birthday and hosted Farm Aid VI, in Ames, Iowa. Simon had appeared at the 1992 iteration of the benefit concert, with nearly 40,000 in attendance, performing solo versions of “The Boxer” and “Homeward Bound” before being joined by Nelson for the jubilant 1986 title cut from Simon’s career-rebounding LP, Graceland.

Austin is called the "Live Music Capital of the World," and a very large influence on it was singer/songwriter Stephen Bruton. In 2007, only a week after completing his treatment for throat cancer and in his final appearance on stage, Bruton led his band through a four-hour, 38-song "Road to Austin" performance in front of 20,000 fans. Director Gary Fortin covers the concert and history of the Austin music scene from 1835 to today in Road to Austin, which premiered at SXSW 2014.
Beginning with Kris Kristofferson and John Paul DeJoria relating their experiences, Fortin weaves photos and film footage from the earliest days of Austin into a vivid tapestry. Artists recount tales of legendary venues, some now gone, including Threadgill's, Antone's, the Armadillo World Headquarters, Broken Spoke, Continental Club and Saxon Pub.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Famed country singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett will be the recipient of the Stephen Bruton Award at the 2013 Lone Star Film Festival, the Lone Star Film Society announced last week. Bruton was a musician from Forth Worth whose noteworthy achievements included contributing to the soundtrack of "Crazy Heart" right before his death in 2009. The award is given to a musician that has also made waves in the world of film. Other than his acclaimed musical career, Lovett has also made several appearances onscreen, most notably in Robert Altman's films "The Player" and "Short Cuts." Past recipients of the Stephen Bruton Award have included Willie Nelson, T. Bone Burnett, and Kris Kristofferson. Although just in its seventh year, the Lone Star Film Festival has consistently grown in size and star-wattage, attracting talents such as Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Duvall. It's likely that it will maintain its substantial influence and contribution to...

On the recent Access Hollywood Live, Billy Bush gave one of his best. interviews. ever. with Jeff Bridges who talks about his family, charities and his new LP. Montecito resident Bridges was even asked if he was going to crash the Kardashian wedding this weekend. The reason Jeff is out an about these days is his new album, "Jeff Bridges"- a bluesy folk collection that features Bridges at his best. Jeff is also a painter and photographer too. (The Big Lebowski has a special new DVD release too). Bridges has been writing songs since he was a kid. For his latest, T Bone Burnett, Ryan Bingham, and Steve Bruton all return to support Bridges. To our mind, Jeff Bridges can do no wrong. We love all his various incarnations, from "Last Picture Show" to "Jagged Edge," "Tron" to "True Grit." That goes for his current country crooner one as well.
Bridges' self-titled album comes out today (Tuesday, Aug. 16) and he stopped by "Today" to perform one of the songs, "What a Little Bit of Love Can Do."
Written by Stephen Bruton -- who used to work with singer Kris Kristofferson, who Bridges' Oscar-winning "Crazy Heart" character is more than a little similar too -- the song was originally penned for the "Crazy Heart" soundtrack. While it didn't make the movie cut, it did find a home on the album.
Additionally, Bridges' album includes two songs he wrote himself, "Falling Short" and "Tumbling Vine." And did we mention it's out today?...

"Crazy Heart" was more than an Oscar winning film for Jeff Bridges, it was an opportunity to rekindle his musical pursuits, which he has kept "cooking on the stove" throughout his brilliant career as an actor. Reuniting with his old pal, record producer T Bone Burnett, and the impetus from the success of that film was all Bridges needed to turn from portraying a great musician, to actually becoming one.
Bridges harnessed the momentum from that film, and with his "Crazy Heart" collaborators lead by Burnett, recorded his self-titled debut on Blue Note Records. Bridges and Burnett were originally introduced to each other by actor/singer Kris Kristofferson in 1980, while the three were filming the infamous Western, "Heaven's Gate." Burnett, known for his work with Robert Plant, Elton John, the soundtracks to "O Brother, Where Are Thou?," and "Walk the Line" also helped put the soundtrack together for "The Big Lebowski,...

Jeff Bridges turned West Hollywood’s legendary nightclub the Troubadour into his living room last night as he previewed songs from his Aug. 16 self-titled album, as well as delved into Bad Blake’s catalog. With a guitar strap emblazoned with Bad, Bridges easily swung back and forth between his new alt country tunes and songs fans first heard delivered by his alter ego, “Crazy Heart’s” Blake, including the Oscar-winning “The Weary Kind.” Given that the bulk of the sloping songs—whether for Blake or Bridges—were penned by John Goodwin, the late Stephen Bruton and T Bone Burnett, there’s no real demarcation between either....

Oscar-winning actor to record solo LP with T-Bone Burnett and Roseanne Cash. And Elton John may be involved too ...
He won an Oscar for playing a country singer in Crazy Heart, but now Jeff Bridges is slinging on his guitar in real life, releasing a debut album this summer. The actor will record original songs and at least one Tom Waits classic, with guests including Johnny Cash's daughter, Roseanne.
Blue Note Records announced the LP yesterday, offering few details but promising a late summer release. If a summertime strummer by the Dude himself sounds like a Big Lebowski outtake, Bridges has beat fans to the punchline: his two rumoured musical aliases, the Abiders and the Royal We, are both nods to his most iconic role.
Bridges will work on the project with his long-time friend T-Bone Burnett, who he met on the set of Heaven's Gate, three decades ago.

Jeff Bridges is about to take his musical skills to the next level.
The actor, who won an Academy Award for his role as a washed up country singer in "Crazy Heart," has signed on for a solo album through the Blue Note Records.

Bridges is looking crazy awesome on the cover of Esquire's May Music issue, rocking a mic and a suit like nobody's business.

I found out last night that actor Bill Paxton will be in Austin next week. (Don't confuse him with Bill Pullman. I nearly did so myself.) The Fort Worth native will be at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar on Monday night to screen the first feature he directed, Frailty, from 2001. Then on Tuesday, he'll receive a 2011 Texas Medal of Arts Award at the Long Center. Tickets are still available for both these events.
I didn't see Bill Paxton when he was last in Austin in March 2007, at SXSW and the Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards. Fortunately, I did find this photo on Flickr and Austin Film Society gave me permission to republish it here. Paxton was initiated into the Texas Film Hall of Fame by the late great musician Stephen Bruton, also pictured above.

Actor Jeff Bridges has enjoyed an impressive big-screen career playing a broad range of characters from the President of the United States to an alien, and yet he is often called one of the most underrated actors of his time. For his acclaimed role as Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit," Bridges is nominated for an Oscar for the sixth time -- he won Best Actor last year for "Crazy Heart."

The tenth solo album by Alejandro Escovedo, Street Songs of Love, will be released on Tuesday, June 29. The same night he'll stride on stage at the first of three shows this week at New York City's City Winery and no doubt blow the roof off the place at the start of his summer tour, taking his music directly to the people once again. "I love touring, I love playing in front of people," Escovedo told me recently. "It's always been about playing in front of people for me." The new album is at once robust and tender, all 13 of its tracks taking on love in its many forms, and dedicated with love to his first record producer, guitarist Stephen Bruton, who died last year. After 2008's autobiographical Real Animal, Escovedo had hoped this time to just record "cool songs...

After Crazy Heart received Oscar nominations for its two stars, Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as a third nomination for original song, the film earned nearly $20M, a considerable bump in its overall takie since its slow limited release in December.
The film is based on an original screenplay about an alcoholic, washed-up country singer penned by actor-turned-director Scott Scooper. Cooper has been acting since the late '90s with bit parts in films like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Gods and Generals. • Before revealing that he is sticking with "The Hurt Locker" for the best picture Oscar, Dave Karger recaps the derby parallels between that film and "Brokeback Mountain" four years ago: "'Brokeback' managed the rare feat of winning Best Picture and Best Director at both the New York and Los Angeles film critics awards; so did 'Hurt Locker.' 'Brokeback' also picked up those two big prizes at the Broadcast Film Critics Awards; so did 'Hurt Locker.' 'Brokeback' won the trifecta of PGA, DGA, and WGA trophies; so did 'Hurt Locker. 'Brokeback' won 4 BAFTAs, including Best Film, Director, and Screenplay; 'Hurt Locker' picked up 6 awards, including Best Film, Director, and Screenplay. And of course, 'Brokeback' lost the SAG cast award, and so did 'Hurt Locker.' As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.
As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.
Quite how this will affect the runners and the riders for this year's Oscars remains to be seen but it...

Alarmingly for Jeff Bridges, his talents finally seem to be winning awards. The actor tells Xan Brooks why anonymity, sincerity and studiously avoiding work is the key to success
There is a nice scene in Jeff Bridges' new film in which his character – a broken-down country singer – sits down on a bed and composes a song. He decides that it is a good song because it sounds timeless and familiar, "like you've heard it someplace before". Great songs, he suggests, have always been with us; they just need someone to dust them off and turn them to the light. The same, perhaps, can be said of great actors too.
Last month Bridges was sitting at a table at the Golden Globes when his name was read out as the winner of this year's best actor award. This was a surprise to other guests, who figured that George Clooney would...

If you were to dig up and dust off your old Encyclopedia Britannica and locate the phrase “washed up” its possible you’ll find Bad Blake’s picture listed. The only hitch is that Bad Blake doesn’t exist. At least, he doesn’t exist as his own person but exists as a symbol for so many artists who have endured a similar self-induced sacrifice on their own lives in the pursuit of their craft. The troubling dilemma becomes deciding between the art and the people you love.
Actor turned writer-director Scott Cooper makes his feature film debut with Crazy Heart, based on the novel by Thomas Cobb. This is the story of Bad Blake, a washed up country-western singer and songwriter who travels the southwest in his beat-down 1978 Suburban he calls Bessie, performing tiny gigs in hole-in-the-wall dives and bowling alleys. Blake hates that his career has ended up here,...

The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards were announced this morning, and leading with eight each are An Education, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker. The line-up looks much like what we’ve seen in earlier awards with the obvious skew towards British-born selections like Carey Mulligan, underrated comedy In the Loop, and first time director Duncan Jones.
Notable snubs include Bright Star shut out in every category but costume, Avatar missing a spot for screenplay to The Hangover, and Sam Rockwell for Moon.
Winners will be announced February 21. Here are the nominees:

Ahhh, the days of five nominees flashing back. All expected to make the Oscar final 10 (and perhaps a little helpful push for the sophisticated An Education).

Those who believe District 9 is peaking will have much to squawk about here. It will still take much to break into what's the current expected five. Still, thank you BAFTA for throwing in a few differences here and there.

Awards season has begun in earnest. Is it all self-congratulatory nonsense or is it all worthwhile? Does it, in the end, just help films sell more? People seem to love the decadence, the glitz and the glamour, but there’s a dark side to movie awards…the after-parties with all the cocaine and prostitutes (legal note: might not actually happen). Anyway, here’s this year’s full list of nominations.

Photo: Orange British Academy Film Awards Today the nominations for the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards were announced and Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the way with eight nominations each followed closely by District 9 with seven and Inglourious Basterds and Up In the Air each pulling in six each. The only film not amongst the nomination leaders that was nominated for Best Film is Lionsgate's Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, which did manage four nominations.
Looking over the nominations there are a few that stand out as breaking from the norm, such as Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Lone Scherfig (An Education) both getting directorial nominations alongside James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. Both District 9 and An Education have enjoyed plenty of love during the awards season, but this is a nice bonus that both Blomkamp and Scherfig should be proud of.

2009 was an amazing year for British film. The BAFTA longlist has James Cameron’s Avatar and Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air go up against Tarantino’s glorious Basterds and our pick of the year, Duncan Jones’ sublime Moon, we also have A Single Man and An Education showcasing a wealth of talent.

Back in December, MTV's Kurt Loder had the privilege of sitting and chatting with "Crazy Heart" star Jeff Bridges, tonight's winner of the Best Actor (Drama) Golden Globe award and a strong contender to receive the same honors at the Academy Awards in March. Since we're all buzzing with Bridges love tonight, I thought I'd dig out this first-hand account of Kurt hanging with The Dude for you all to enjoy a second time.
Fox Searchlight Pictures threw a little holiday party at a fashionable SoHo hotel the other night, and no wonder. The company has had a very good year. Three of its movies are getting serious critical love as the year-end polls come in. The animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and its director, Wes Anderson, have just won awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review (Nbr); “(500) Days of Summer” won a best-film nod from the St.

The Jeff Bridges film Crazy Heart is powered as much by its music as it is its signature performance, one that might win Bridges an Oscar by the time it's all said and done. The Dude plays aging country singer-songwriter Bad Blake, who wears the years and the mileage of a life on the road on his weathered face.
T-Bone Burnett and the late Stephen Bruton worked on the musical score and the soundtrack features some of the greatest country acts from when they were distinguishable from pop stars - Waylon, Buck Owens, George Jones, Townes Van Zandt, and even the Louvin Brothers. But the song that stands out the most is new, Ryan Bingham's "The Weary Kind."

Jeff Bridges let himself go for Crazy Heart (2009). In the film, out now in theaters, Bridges plays Bad Blake, a drunken, sweaty, scruffy, and overweight ex-country star who's heading toward an early grave if he doesn't get his act together -- and fast. The actor's fearless performance just earned him his fifth Oscar nomination, and the film is pretty good, too, with more than a few people referring to it as The Wrestler (2008) with country music. ScreenStar recently had the opportunity to participate in a group interview with Bridges -- whose previous Oscar nominations were for The Last Picture Show (1971), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), Starman (1984), and The Contender (2000) -- at a Manhattan hotel, and here's some of what he had to say. Who did you have in mind when you were creating your character? My prime role model, who was on board with me every day, was Stephen Bruton (who died...

Yes, the Academy Awards are giving us ten Best Picture nominees this year. But there are only five available. Let's be honest here and lock up Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious and Up In The Air for nominations. I suppose, if nothing else, we can thank the Academy for making the guessers sweat a little bit. The Best Picture race would be all but sewn up already while prognosticators wonder if Precious will be replaced on Feb. 2 with one of any number of surprises. Not this year. Oscar ballots were due yesterday, so every nomination and victory from here on out just feeds the numbers game. Let us take a closer look at the ten films still duking it out for the next five slots though. (Editor's Note: The AMPAS polls actually close on Jan. 23.)

It's too easy to describe Crazy Heart (2009) as The Wrestler (2008) with country music, but it's not that far from the truth -- and it's not really a negative, either. After all, The Wrestler was a fine film and it nabbed a bunch of awards and nominations, right? And don't be surprised if Crazy Heart does so as well. The always-versatile Jeff Bridges stars as Bad Blake, a rough-and-tumble has-been country star who drives around in an old, beat-up truck, plays for handfuls of balding, overweight fans in dive bars and even bowling alleys, and can barely tolerate his handsome, younger protege Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell). Tommy is a best-selling artist who performs for sold-out, screaming crowds, and he wants Bad to write songs for him. Worse, Bad has let himself go. He's fat and drinks way too much, and he won't be alive much longer if he doesn't change his ways.

Director: Scott Cooper Writers: Scott Cooper (screenplay), Thomas Cobb (novel) Starring: Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Duvall, Colin Farrell “The harder the life, the sweeter the song”. I’m not typically one for studio tag-lines, but the aforementioned phrase dedicated to Crazy Heart breaks the mold for me in summing up the tone of Scott Cooper’s directorial debut. Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb, Crazy Heart is one of the most honest, and harsh depictions of alcoholism I’ve ever seen on the screen. Behind this depiction, is what should and will be heralded as the performance of Jeff Bridges’ career, and what deserves to put him in contention for a best actor Oscar nomination. Crazy Heart follows the story of Bad Blake, one of the lingering dinosaurs of the outlaw country movement (as played by Bridges) who most of time has forgotten. Relegated...
