Everybody who has been fretting over Robert De Niro’s career of late can collectively exhale a sigh of relief. After carpet bombing the cinematic landscape with stinkers like The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hide and Seek, Godsend, and Righteous Kill, De Niro finally settles into a nice little film devoid of gimmicks and action. Playing the widowed patriarch of four grown children, De Niro gives a quietly nuanced performance that grounds the film, and makes you remember why you liked him to begin with.
Everybody’s Fine tells the story of a very ordinary family and the events surrounding a holiday gathering. Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) is recently widowed, and has made plans to have all four of his grown children visit him for Christmas. He prepares the house, buys the groceries, purchases a new grill, and awaits their arrival. One by one each child calls and

Everybody’s Fine Review — John’s Take

Around 3/4 of the way through Everybody’s Fine — the new dramatic comedy from Kirk Jones that functions as a remake of the Italian film Stanno tutti bene — Robert De Niro’s character Frank Goode has a conversation with a female truck driver as he hitches a ride to visit one of his grown children who have dispersed themselves across the country. The driver acknowledges that she lost her husband to alcoholism, while Goode mentions that he’s “lost” his wife as well.
Actually, Goode has lost everybody important to him. His wife has passed away, and she was the one who the children (played as adults by Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, Austin Lysy and Kate Beckinsale) felt more comfortable communicating with; in her absence, he learns nothing new about his family and almost all threads have been severed. His journey to reacquaint himself with them is motivated by loss and the impending fear of death,

'Everybody's Fine' Too Cloying to Feel Authentic

Everybody's Fine seems tailor-made for those with big hearts, small brains, and a wad of tissues in their pockets. Despite a solid cast and strong source material, this remake of a 1990 film from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore quickly devolves into a mess of treacle and tears.
In the comedy-tinged drama, recently widowed Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has lost touch with his grown children Amy (Kate Beckinsale), Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Robert (Sam Rockwell), and David (Austin Lysy), particularly since the death of his beloved wife. When everyone fails to show up for a family event at his home, Frank decides to head across the country to surprise each of his sons and daughters.
A trip to New York finds artist David absent from his downtown apartment, and Frank's other visits don't go much better. He is quickly shooed away from Amy's Chicago home, and his arrival in Robert's Denver doesn't last much longer.

Plot: A retired widower (Robert De Niro) hits the road in hopes of reconnecting with his grown children- none of whom seem to be as happy or successful as he presumed.
Review: Everybody.S Fine is something of a comeback for star Robert De Niro. While he.s done enough brilliant work over the years to ensure his place among the legends of cinema, his recent output has been underwhelming to say the least. His last two films (What Just Happened, and Righteous Kill) were depressingly bad,

For his roles in such '70s and '80s classics as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Robert De Niro has been revered as the master of Method Acting. But of late he has been more closely associated with animated family fare (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Shark Tale), thrillers that failed to deliver thrills (Hide and Seek and 15 Minutes) and slow plodding dramas (City by the Sea and Men of Honor). Even his recent reunion with Al Pacino in Righteous Kill failed to spark with audiences.
For much of this decade, many De Niro-led films have neither ignited the box office nor drawn critical kudos. But there have been a few notable exceptions. As Frank, the curmudgeonly soon-to-be-father-in-law in Meet the Parents, De Niro struck gold. The sequel, Meet the Fockers, raked in almost $280M in international ticket sales. And What Just Happened?

"Across The Hall"
A stripped-down neo-noir with a twist, this feature debut for filmmaker Alex Merkin began as a 2005 short (starring Adrian Grenier, which can be found online here). Grenier didn't return, but Mike Vogel takes his place as Julian, a young man who races to a seedy hotel where his best friend's wayward fiancée (Brittany Murphy) and another man have aroused the suspicions of his pal, who's holed up "across the hall" with a bottle of whiskey and a gun.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

Despite being one of the richest rappers and has won several awards, 50 Cent seems unable to beat Chace Crawford when it comes to winning a crowd of screaming girls. He admitted to be shocked to know how girls went crazy over Chace on set of their upcoming film, "Twelve".
"You should see how the girls go crazy over Chace," he recalled as quoted by E! Online. "I'd see these people standing around, jumping up and down, and I'd say. 'What is going on?' Did they see me?' But then I'd see Chace standing outside. I need to get in on that."
Although Chace looked like to be the most popular of the two, 50 has nothing but good words for the "Gossip Girl" star. Talking about how good Chace is when portraying White Mike, the rapper praised his co-star, "He was really, really good on set. I mean, he'll

Career-wise, there seems to be no trouble on the horizon for actress Carla Gugino. The actress best known for Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids films and her role on TV's Entourage has been busy lately working in some of Hollywood's most successful films starting with Rodriguez's Sin City in 2005 and followed by Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller, American Gangster opposite Russell Crow, Righteous Kill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and most recently the starring role in Disney's remake Race to Witch Mountain. But it was her role earlier this year as Sally Jupiter in Zach Snyder's brilliant comic book-adapted Watchmen that made her a household name amongst fan-boys and the actress will be collaborating once again with Snyder in his upcoming film Sucker Punch!. However, the she can currently be seen on screen as porn star Elektra Luxx in director Sebastian Gutierrez's new female-ensemble-comedy Women in Trouble,

Warner Bros’ moody Where the Wild Things Are landed on top of the box office with $32.7 million, beating analyst expectations and competition from the Gerard Butler/Jamie Foxx movie Law Abiding Citizen.
The children’s book adaptation may be PG, but it certainly didn’t play like a kids movie on the screen or in the numbers. 43% of the audience was over the age of 18 and only 27% were families, according to a Variety analysis.
The studio managed to overcome skeptical word of mouth after a test footage leak and whisperings of editing battles with director Spike Jonze. After years of post-production (filming started in April 2006), Jonze was able to turn the $80 million production into a product suitable for release and recommended by 68% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Law Abiding Citizen finished in second, but still over expert predictions. With the star power of Gerard Butler (in his third movie this

The Bride may be back. Uma Thurman, who played the deadly sword-wielder in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol.1 and Kill Bill Vol.2, recently chatted with MTV about a possible Kill Bill Vol.3 while promoting her latest project Motherhood. “Yeah, I think it’d be fun,” the hot 39-year-old said.
“[Quentin and I] did chat, we did chat. He has not yet finished the script. I don’t even really know if he’s really started it, although I got a taste of some of his ideas and they are really good.”
When asked if she could share any of said ideas, the blond bombshell replied, “I can’t tell you! I’m sorry!
Not as sorry as we are.
Last month we told you that Quentin Tarantino was pondering a third entry in the Kill Bill saga. “The Bride will fight again,” he said. “I have to wait a couple of years

Has Quentin Tarantino officially announced Kill Bill Vol. 3 or has the acclaimed director pulled some shennigans?
The beloved auteur announced that a third Kill Bill movie may hit theaters in 2014.
While on the Italian talk show Parla con Me, the Tarantino admitted that he and Kill Bill star Uma Thurman “needed a ten-year break before making another installment in the revenge saga.”
“The Bride will fight again,” he said. “I have to wait a couple of years because I want ten years to pass from the second one to the third one. For two reasons – one, I think me and Uma need a ten-year break because the first one was so hard. Second, I love the character. I just really, really love her.
“I think she deserves ten years of peace! Ten years of no fighting and ten years with her child Bb. I put her through a lot and

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs only fell an estimated 18.8 percent, the 26th smallest drop of all time (of films that opened in at least 3000 theaters). Alert commenters Jm and Nick both had Meatballs winning, but even they didn't have it cracking $20m. However, commenter Steve probably was most apt with his "Good weekend to get caught up on videos" take. It was the third worst weekend of the year, and the miserable financial September continues. Let's break it down!
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
It still needs another $190m before it can start thinking about profit, so they've got to be thrilled the film showed strength this weekend. It it wins again I promise I'll actually see it.
Result: 24.6 million (My rank: #, $m off)
2. Surrogates

Paul Haggis Hires Three For His Pic The Next Three Days

It's difficult for me to get very excited for a new Paul Haggis directorial project. The stain of Crash stays with me. But The Next Three Days could be interesting. It's a remake of a 2008 French film Pour Elle by Fred Cavaye about a couple that has some problems when the woman is imprisoned for a murder she says she didn't commit. Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks are the headliners, but three more have just been added to the cast.
THR reports that the RZA is one of the three. No, I didn't see that one coming, either. Also on board is a kid named Ty Simpkins, from Little Children and Revolutionary Road, and far more interesting is the final add: Brian Dennehy. I feel like I haven't seen Dennehy do much in a while, but that's because I missed Righteous Kill. He's negotiating to come on board as the

Matthew Lillard doesn’t have the chops to be a good dramatic actor. I learned this years ago with Thirteen Ghosts. However, you can’t blame the man for trying, because there aren’t any Scooby Doo sequels on the horizon. (There is a made for TV prequel coming, though, if that’s your thing. Lillard isn’t involved.)
Director Rob Cowan (The Crazies remake, Righteous Kill, The Net) has completed screenwriter Larry Cohen’s Messages Deleted, the third in a string of phone-centric films from the writer following Cellular and Phone Booth.
While the central concept of the film isn’t altogether bad, Lillard seems silly and Deborah Kara Unger doesn’t seem to help. The official plot synopsis is as follows:
A quivering voice begs screenwriter, Joel Brandt, to pick up the phone on a message from his answering machine. Thinking its a prank, Joel deletes the message.
