His best films are light as a feather, but never frivolous; they are full of astute social commentary which never comes off as didactic, and they pervaded by his singular world view -- one which is neither cynical nor naive, but understands the flawed nature of man. His images are both lyrical and bleak, while his later films are unrivaled in their glorious display of technicolour.
