Bodies froth before being snatched in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The classic 1956 science fiction/horror thriller film Invasion of the Body Snatchers finally arrives on Blu-ray.

Kevin McCarthy (Kansas City Bomber) stars as a doctor in a small California town whose patients are becoming hysterical and accuse their loved ones of “becoming” emotionless imposters. It doesn’t take too long for McCarthy and his friends to discover that plant-like extra-terrestrials have invaded Earth and are replicating the townsfolk in giant seed “pods,” taking possession of their souls while they sleep. Realizing that the epidemic is out of control and spreading everywhere, the remaining humans find themselves in a terrifying race for their lives.

Directed by the great Don Siegel (Dirty Harry) and co-starring Dana Wynter (On the Double), Carolyn Jones (TV’s The Addams Family) and Larry Gates »

The Essentials: The Films Of Don Siegel

20 April 2012 9:04 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In the credits to his masterpiece "Unforgiven," Clint Eastwood included a dedication: "for Don Siegel and Sergio Leone." Leone was a no-brainer, one of the great filmmakers who worked with Clint on a trio of films ("The Good The Bad And The Ugly," "A Fistful Of Dollars" and "For A Few Dollars More"). But Siegel was less beloved of cinephiles. A cosmopolitan Chicago native who studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, he started directing montages at Warner Bros. (including the opening scene of "Casablanca"), before breaking into features, with a string of B-movies with everyone from Robert Mitchum to Elvis Presley (the latter on 1960's "Flaming Star"), but became most notable for his work with Eastwood on five pictures from 1968's "Coogan's Bluff" to 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz."

Siegel was an unpretentious, unprecious director, best known for tough, muscular crime movies, but he never became an auteur favorite, despite his obvious »

The top 50 sci-fi movie protagonists

19 April 2012 8:55 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Whether they’re male or female, old or young, they’ve illuminated some classic movies. Here’s our top 50 list of sci-fi heroes and heroines…

On the face of it, compiling a list of truly great sci-fi protagonists should be easy. Pick a load of familiar names from a hat, write some breathlessly adoring drivel beneath them, and head off to the pub to reward a job well done.

Except it was never going to be as simple as that – and compiling lists seldom is. For every character making an appearance in the list below, there were at least two other possible candidates who didn't quite make the cut. Some sci-fi heroes were removed, then quickly reinstated. The order was jiggled around, then reordered again.

At one point, your humble writer realised there were more than 50 entries, and then had the unenviable task of hunting back through to decide which poor soul to eliminate. »

20 of the biggest sci-fi cinema disappointments of the last 20 years

10 April 2012 9:59 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

They appeared to promise so much, but sadly delivered so little. We take a look back at a few of the last 20 years’ biggest sci-fi disappointments...

Every year sees its fair share of good and bad sci-fi movies. But every so often, a movie comes along that, either because of its premise, its cast, its filmmaking pedigree or a mixture of all three, sounds so promising that we eagerly anticipate its arrival. Inevitably, there’s also a small percentage of such films which fail to live up to their early promise.

This list is devoted to this peculiar category of sci-fi movie: the ones that could have been so much better than they turned out. And to prevent the list from getting too long and rambling, we’ve restricted our selection to 20, and restricted the time frame to the last two decades. Your opinions will almost certainly vary, so feel »

I'm Sorry, But The First 'The Host' Trailer is Awful

23 March 2012 3:14 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

The very first trailer for The Host, adapted from the book by Stephanie Meyer, was released today, and boy, does it suck.

It's actually more like a book trailer (yes, people are making video trailers to books, a lot) than a film trailer; it shows us very little, if any, footage from the actual film and just gives a narration voice over about how the Earth has been taken over by aliens who inhabit our bodies (gee, Body Snatchers much?) but have eliminated war, poverty, shittiness, etc. So, pros and cons, right? According to this trailer, it makes your eyes turn light blue when you're inhabited by one of these aliens. Two tweenagers find themselves fighting the alien takeover amid teenage (fleeting and superficial) romance.

Apparently , the kids just love the book, and lead actress Saoirse Ronan is one of my favorite Young People In Hollywood — Did you see her »
