"Scream" with a cheerier-looking killer, 27 August 2007
7/10
Author: TheatreX from Louisville, KY

This is a rather long variation on "Scream", in Hindi, with song & dance and at times, absolutely gorgeous scenery and photography. It also sports a cheerier-looking killer than "Scream", for gone is the spooky face with the permanent scream and in its place is a cheery sort of clown face, complete with smile & cheery red, yellow, and blue, kind of like a loaf of Wonder Bread. Look out though, there's STILL a big knife & whoever is behind that mask knows how to use it quite well. The film opens with a killing, a young girl on a squash court & her boyfriend are murdered, and then we have the opening title sequence which is rather bizarre in that there are singing dancing killers (complete with knives) doing choreographed moves on a mountain top...it looks really cool but just the idea of it is pretty darn strange, at least to Western thinking. At any rate, this is not far off from "Scream" and that sort of film, but the attitudes and the behavior of the young actors is WAY more restrained than it would be in a Western film. This is not chock full of drug or alcohol use, nor sex at every turn, and these kids are college students that actually seem to be going to college and taking courses and studying, which is definitely not a Western thing, either. Anyway, to get the sister of the girl who was killed to take her mind off her troubles, her friends stage a trip to Thailand and all these people end up stranded on a desert island complete with...the Cheery Looking Killer! Hard to believe? You betcha, but not that hard. The thing about this is that "Scream" was supposed to be a spoof or parody, wasn't it? And this isn't, really, although it does employ a lot of clichés that are in popular movies today, it doesn't seem to be made with the intent to poke fun. Still though, for a lazy Sunday afternoon with nothing else to do, this is kind of a fun and cool movie, although it is about 163 minutes long, gasp! I especially enjoyed "Punjabi Night at the disco", that was kind of fun except it apparently got the gang kicked out of their hotel. 7 out of 10, not too bad!
