The finer details of how clever the continuity between the John Carpenter original and this film, I must admit, were lost to me until I watched the making of documentary. Very well done! The special effects were not too over the top. The subtle use of new CGI in conjuction with animatronics helped this fall in line with the original creature effects from the 1982 film. Having said that...the original is still better. I never reached the same level of 'fear'. The Music from the original has always stuck in my mind. Very similar score, (if not same), in this one but it was interesting how it had no impact on the tension.

"Abominable" uses "Rear Window" as its inspiration and the catalyst for tension as a man confined to his home witnesses a creature out in the woods on a killing spree. Unable to move or communicate with other people he must use his wits and ingenuity to survive. Terrible acting, cheesy scipt and odd camera angles and direction is so bad that I am convinced that it was deliberate. Think Ed Wood. Perhaps an homage to the B-grade horror/Sci-Fi movies of the past? I will give benefit of the doubt...

Terrible slasher style horror flick with next to no scares. The title makes a desperate attempt for viewers with the premise of bikini-clad girls. Suprisingly little of that also. Avoid at all costs!

An English film, which in many ways, improves what is a grim set of tales but still can't completely satisify.

Votes: 34,776
The 'IT' girl of the moment, Amber Heard, stars in this horror slasher flick. A far better film than what you initially are expecting; very much piloted by Heards tangible star power. Small part by 'Hell On Wheels' Anson Mount also helps.
85. 96 Minutes (2011)

Votes: 3,400
Four different stories revolving around one event. This style of film has been done before and far better. All the leads try hard but nothing really feels right here. Some big topics attempted to tackle on capital punishment, racism etc are dwarfed by the scripts inability to make the viewer care about the characters.

Enjoyed this far more than what I expected. The X-Men movie with Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman was good but this takes it to a far more entertaining level. Worth a watch!
88. Oldboy (2003)

Director: Park Chan-wook | Stars: Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jeong, Kim Byeong-Ok
Votes: 636,280 | Gross: $0.71M
Min-sik Choi is brilliant in his role as Dae-su Oh, a man hell bent on truth and revenge for his imprisonment. Director Chan-Wook Park films "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance", "Oldboy" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" are widely known as the "Vengeance Trilogy". Park credits his decision to become a filmmaker after seeing Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. His ability to tell stories through creating not only 3 dimensional heroes but also 3 dimensional villians is my favourite aspect of his films.
89. And Soon the Darkness (2010)

Director: Marcos Efron | Stars: Amber Heard, Odette Annable, Karl Urban, Adriana Barraza

Re-make of 1970 film of the same name. Great locations in Salta, Argentina with sweeping shots of the mountain ranges adding to the isolated tone and atmosphere of the film. The deserted city within the military zone at the climax of the film turns out to be actual ruins of a town, Lago Epecuén, which had been a saltwater resort that people would go to for therapy. It flooded in the ‘80,s after canal locks broke, so the water never receded. Quite eery! Not great but watchable for the scenery.

Psychological drama with some strong leads. Peter Mullan stands out in his role as Gordon. Unfortunately, as with most of this genre, it gets overly complicated and difficult to follow in the climactic scenes.

Director: Jonathan Liebesman | Stars: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike, Ralph Fiennes
Votes: 195,594 | Gross: $83.67M
Dissapointed by this sequel. Poor script wasted on some top notch actors. Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy etc. You could not ask for more acting force but if it hasn't got the script then it just won't work. The ending of this feels very similar to "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". Special effects are OK but....where is Ray Harryhausen when you need him. I wish it wasn't so Computer-ish!!
93. Mirror Mirror (I) (2012)
PG | 106 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama
An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright.
Director: Tarsem Singh | Stars: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane
Votes: 91,097 | Gross: $64.94M
Found myself thoroughly enjoying this quiet little movie that has been overshadowed by the recent release of " Snow White & The Huntsmen". Julia Roberts is perfect as the wicked Queen and Lily Collins is a great find as Snow White. There is so much to like about this film; wonderful set and costume, witty script, fantastic performances all around with Nathan Lane a stand out (yet again) and even the suprise Bollywood production number during the end credits. Give this movie a chance and you will not be dissapointed!
94. John Carter (2012)

Director: Andrew Stanton | Stars: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton
Votes: 286,302 | Gross: $73.08M
Fantastic first third, excellent last 3rd but gets very bogged down in story during the middle passage. It makes you appreciate some of the great sci-fi adventure franchises of our times, such as Star Wars, and the ability to tell complex stories well. To be fair, (and being unfamiliar with the Edgar Rice Burroughs story), this has probably done as well as it could. With so much information to fit in of all of these new characters, races, wars and history; to have it flow out in a little over 2 hours is, I assume, going to be very hard. This bombed at the box office quite badly...will there be a sequel? I hope so. I think the ground work here will have set this franchise up well for future adventures.
95. Safe House (2012)
R | 115 min | Action, Thriller
A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.
Director: Daniel Espinosa | Stars: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Robert Patrick, Vera Farmiga
Votes: 235,672 | Gross: $126.37M
Denzel Washington, a captured rogue CIA agent, and Ryan Reynolds, the rookie CIA agent who mans a safe house in Capetown, do well in this tense Action/Thriller. This suffers the same as most in the genre do though; poor character development. It becomes a car chase, followed by a foot chase, followed by shoot-outs and you never really care about the people involved. The action is all quite well done though. Ok watch if you just want an adrenaline rush.
96. The Watermen (2012)
R | 94 min | Horror, Thriller
A clan of watermen capture a crew of sport fishermen who must then fight for their lives.
Director: Matt L. Lockhart | Stars: Jason Mewes, Richard Riehle, Floyd Abel, Blakely Bunnell
Votes: 1,321
Slasher flick with group terrorised by fishermen known as 'Watermen'. Silly story and some bad acting not helped at all by some ridiculous scripting. Miss this one!
97. 21 Jump Street (2012)

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.
Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller | Stars: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson
Votes: 598,808 | Gross: $138.45M
Funny modern version of the popular 80's TV series. Being a big fan of the show I was dubious about this. Found myslef enjoying it though and had some serious belly laughs throughout! Certainly not to everyones tastes. Fun cameos by original cast members including Johnny Depp.
98. Age of the Dragons (2011)
PG-13 | 91 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Herman Melville's classic novel Moby Dick, is recreated in a world where Captain Ahab and his crew search for a Great White Dragon.
Director: Ryan Little | Stars: Danny Glover, Vinnie Jones, Corey Sevier, Sofia Pernas
Votes: 4,552
Unusual take on the classic tale of 'Moby Dick'. The great white whale is substituted this time with a dragon. The characters remain the same with Captain Ahab played by Danny Glover and all involved dedicate 100% to their roles, (sometimes excessively acted by Glover), but never to the point that this makes it beyond anything other than OK if nothing better to pass the time with.
99. Anonymous (I) (2011)
PG-13 | 130 min | Drama, Thriller
The theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford, who penned Shakespeare's plays. Set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I and the Essex rebellion against her.
Director: Roland Emmerich | Stars: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis, Sebastian Armesto
Votes: 42,138 | Gross: $4.46M
Wonderful, beautiful, dramatic and thrilling. This would be one of the best movies I have seen during 2012. A twist on the real William Shakespeare tale with some interesting plots. Rhys Ifans is brilliant as the Earl of Oxford and is well supported by a fantastic cast including Vanessa Redgrave and Sebastian Armesto. The scenery and recreation of 1600's England is brilliant. Highly recommended.
100. Robin Hood (2010)
PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Drama
In twelfth-century England, Robin Longstride and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.
Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Max von Sydow
Votes: 283,246 | Gross: $105.27M
Russel Crowe is solid as Robin Hood in this big budget recreation of the famous story. Cate Blanchett steals the show again though with a fantastic performance as Marion as is Max von Sydow in an all too small role. A good watch but does lack something...
