Netflix have struck gold once again with Enola Holmes, as the movie dominates the platform’s Top 10 most-watched list while basking in the acclaim of critics and subscribers alike. The literary adaptation is currently on track to break all sorts of viewership records, but the streaming service still have a lawsuit to contend with based on Henry Cavill’s interpretation of big brother Sherlock.
Earlier this year, the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle sued Netflix for copyright infringement, despite the vast majority of Sherlock Holmes stories being property of the public domain. Of course, the author’s estate still retains the rights to ten works published between 1923 and 1927, but these latter stories will also enter the public domain by 2022.
The legal action argues that Cavill’s version of the legendary detective showing warmth and affection to his sister infringes on their copyright, as all previous Holmes tales had depicted him as cold and unfeeling.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary icon Sherlock Holmes is one of the most adapted fictional characters in history, and even in just the last decade we’ve seen multiple iterations of the genius detective on both the big and small screens that have all taken plenty of liberties with Baker Street’s most famous son.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ Sherlock planted Holmes in the modern day and turned Benedict Cumberbatch into a star, while Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu’s Elementary transplanted the basic setup to the United States and ran for seven seasons. Robert Downey Jr. and Guy Ritchie also teamed up for a pair of blockbuster action movies, while Ian McKellen’s Mr. Holmes followed a 93 year-old version of the character and Step Brothers duo Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reunited for Holmes & Watson, which turned out to be one of the worst comedies in recent memory.

Netflix is set to release a fun new twist on the Sherlock Holmes legend in the near future – Enola Holmes, starring Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown as the eponymous younger sister of the Great Detective. Both Sherlock and Brown fans are excited for the movie, then, but not everyone’s on board with it. The estate of Arthur Conan Doyle, the literary character’s creator, is taking Netflix to court in a copyright lawsuit.
As revealed by Deadline, Doyle’s estate filed a 19-page complaint against the streaming giant in New Mexico federal court, with the central point being that the “copyright infringement arises from defendants unauthorized copying of original creative expression by [Conan Doyle] in copyrighted Sherlock Holmes stories.”
The estate’s argument is that, while most Holmes stories are in the public domain, the final 10 Doyle wrote were published from 1923-1927, so they’re still in copyright. The suit notes that,...

“So little is what it seems to be,” the press notes for “The Good Liar” promise. And that’s true, in the sense that one might expect a great deal more from a project that brings together so much talent.
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen get to act opposite each other for the first time ever, under the direction of estimable filmmaker Bill Condon (“Kinsey”). Together, this trio boasts eight Oscar nominations. In fact, Condon won an Academy Award for writing “Gods and Monsters,” which also earned McKellen a nod.
So what strange sleight of hand conspired to drain all the life out of their torpid crime drama?

Renee Zellweger’s musical biopic “Judy” enjoyed breakout box-office success not unlike that of its subject, Judy Garland.
Boosted by Oscar talk for Zellweger’s portrayal of the famed entertainer, “Judy” struck a chord with moviegoers and collected a promising $3 million. That haul is especially impressive considering it opened in just 461 North American theaters, translating to $6,705 from each location and marking the highest screen average of the weekend. If its limited debut is any indication, “Judy” could end up in the category of prestige films that are both loved and seen. Next weekend, the musical biopic will expand to 1,400 to 1,500 screens.
“This is an incredibly promising start and bodes well for its future, both at the box office and during awards season,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. “If this film started in 2,000 theaters, you’re taking a huge risk. By going between that and a four-theater run,...

Roadside Attractions’ launch of musical “Judy” gave the weak specialized box office a much-needed boost. The bravura performance by Renée Zellweger along with sustained interest in Hollywood icon Judy Garland propelled the film to a strong initial response at 461 theaters. Other award contenders will have to step up to similar numbers to redeem a problematic year, but this is a promising start of the season. Roadside also notched a box-office milestone as its steady performer “The Peanut Butter Falcon” passed A24’s long-running hit “The Farewell.”
On a smaller scale, Japanese genre film “First Love” (Well Go USA) also started impressively for a subtitled film with $25,000 in two theaters. This bodes well for several highly anticipated foreign-language films ahead.

Written by Tom Edge and directed by Rupert Goold, Judy showcases Zellweger in the title role in a biopic that’s not cradle-to-grave but rather focuses on a specific, significant piece of Judy Garland’s life.

Ian McKellen faced public scrutiny late last week after comments he made on the #QueerAF podcast, in which he claimed that alleged crimes perpetrated by actor Kevin Spacey and director Bryan Singer were the result of them having to live life as closeted gay men.
Given McKellen’s history of working with both Spacey and Singer and his joke that “I’m waiting for someone to accuse me of something,” the Oscar-nominated actor was criticized in multiple online venues, prompting a response from the man himself.
In a statement posted to social media this weekend, McKellen retracted those comments and apologized for what he said was a remark that was “clumsily expressed.” “I deeply regret my careless remarks and apologise unreservedly for any distress I caused,” McKellen wrote.

Miramax has secured a multi-bank revolving credit facility for $300 million led by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Mufg Union Bank that extends for five years.
The deal was announced Thursday, less than a week before the launch of the Cannes Film Festival, which Miramax executives will attend. Sony Classical announces the release of Goodbye Christopher Robin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with an original score by Academy Award®-nominated composer Carter Burwell.

Goodbye Christopher Robin is directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn, Woman in Gold) and will be released in Us theaters by Fox Searchlight Pictures on October 13, 2017.
Carter Burwell said about the score:
“One of the riskier decisions Simon Curtis and I made with the score was to withhold the main theme until the middle of the film, when A. A. Milne begins to write and his friend Ernest Shepard begins to illustrate “Winnie The Pooh”. We did this to make that moment especially noteworthy, to make it the turning point of the story. Joe D’Amato was a filmmaker that I only knew (other than his reputation for skin flicks and sleaze) from the one movie of his I had seen, Anthropophagous (1980), aka The Grim Reaper, aka "The One Where The Guy Eats The Baby Fetus." And going by that, I had a lot of trepidation upon opening Severin Films’ brand new Blu of Beyond the Darkness (1979), D’Amato’s exploration of necrophilia, icky maternal obsession, and stuffing the ones we love. I needn’t have worried. Beyond the Darkness, aka Buried Alive, aka Buio Omega, is not only vastly superior to Anthropophagous, it gives me hope that the D’Amato catalogue is filled with further gems to uncover. I mean, they’re not All porn, right? Right?

While appearing at London’s Comic-Con this past weekend, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch spilled on the detective’s love life – or lack thereof.
The Doctor Strange and soon-to-be Avengers: Infinity War actor fielded questions about his turn as the famous super-sleuth, and even touched base on the speculation linking him with the vacant (?) Bond 25 role. Indeed, Cumberbatch is a name that’s been tossed around numerous times before when it comes to James Bond, along with the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and even Jason Statham, but all signs currently point to Daniel Craig returning for one last hurrah in time for 2019.
Getting back to Sherlock, though, during last weekend’s panel, Benedict Cumberbatch addressed the romantic element underpinning the hit BBC detective series, joking that there’s only one true partner for Mr. Holmes.
“Now, there’s only one choice, isn’t there? Come on,” he told the audience of fans,...

The mystery and intrigue surrounding the as-yet-unconfirmed fifth season of Sherlock is becoming so complex – so frustratingly complex – that even Benedict Cumberbatch’s legendary sleuth would struggle to crack the case.
And though the show’s co-creator Steven Moffat was in attendance at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con to promote Doctor Who, when it comes to the fabled Sherlock season 5, sadly the song remains the same: Moffat and the team remain open to the idea of another instalment, but refuse to commit to anything so soon. Scheduling has been cited as the primary cause for concern, and due to Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s stacked slates, the fifth season of Sherlock is at least two years away…if not longer.
That’s something that Moffat and executive producer Sue Vertue echoed during a recent Sdcc panel (via Deadline), where the latter placed eager fans on a knife edge by revealing that,...

It looks like Universal Pictures has found the director they want to take on their The Bride of Frankenstein remake. This is one of the several monster films that Universal is currently developing and they are currently in talks with director Bill Condon to direct it. Condon recently directed the Disney mega-hit Beauty and the Beast. Prior to that, he directed films such as Dreamgirls, Mr. Holmes, Gods and Monsters, and the final two Twilight movies.
The original 1935 version of the film starred Elsa Lanchester and Boris Karloff, and it's one of my favorite classic monster films and Condon himself has said the same thing in previous interviews. It's just such a beautifully told story. Condon is a great director that has made some fantastic films in his career and I'd like to think he'd be able to pull off something amazing with it, but only time will tell. David Koepp...

Of all the art that the Beatles brought into the world, their cinematic misadventures are probably less fondly remembered than their music. But in addition to 12 studio albums, 13 EPs, and 22 singles, the Fab Four also released five films in their comparatively few years together. From the BBC's Sherlock, through Disney, Hans Zimmer and Young Sherlock Holmes: we salute the music of Mr Holmes...
Few characters have enjoyed as much reinvention as Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth Sherlock Holmes, an enduring icon who is as much bound up with the history of cinema (and indeed stage, TV and radio) as he is with literature. Indeed, adaptations of Holmes stories stretch right the way back to the earliest days of film at the start of the 20th century. Fittingly enough given Holmes' penchant for a violin serenade, the musical scores to his adventures are as richly varied as the outcomes to his mysteries are unexpected. Here are Holmes' musical highlights, from Buster Keaton through to Benedict Cumberbatch.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Not, strictly speaking, a Sherlock movie but as the title implies, the legacy of the character casts a long shadow over Buster Keaton's silent classic.

Did you have issues with Sunday’s Sherlock Season 4 premiere? Well, be careful, because co-creator Mark Gatiss might put you in your place with a well-crafted rhyme.
After “The Six Thatchers” featured Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes in a bone-crunching fistfight, The Guardian‘s Ralph Jones complained that the character was becoming more James Bond than brainy sleuth. Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft on the show, responded on Wednesday in proper British fashion: with a lyric poem (entitled “To an Undiscerning Critic”) pointing out that Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock stories had plenty of action, too.
