We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

His cold, steely biopic Blue Caprice might have not received the same fanfare as Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, but both were nonetheless stellar offerings at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival (here was my recap). A project that we could perhaps lump into the same category as Oren Moverman’s The Messenger was originally mounted at Cannes has changed its components of its line-up, Variety reports that The Yellow Birds now sees Alexandre Moors replace David Lowery in the director’s chair, while Jack Huston replaces Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Sergeant Sterling in an Iraq war drama that includes Jennifer Aniston, Tye Sheridan and Alden Ehrenreich. Story Mining and Supply Co. CEO-president Jeffrey Sharp and Evan Hayes (The Circle) are producing along with Cinelou Films’ Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton (Cake). Jim Kohlberg (The Music Never Stopped) will executive produce.

Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons in “Whiplash”
Whiplash
Directed and written by Damien Chazelle
USA, 2014
Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash centers on a young drummer at a prestigious Manhattan music academy who finds a caustic instructor willing to do anything to urge him toward greatness. This may sound like the beginning of a sentimental, feel-good movie in which encouragement and perseverance win out. But Chazelle’s character study isn’t in the least bit evocative of Mr. Holland’s Opus or Stand and Deliver. Instead, the unrelenting verbal abuse heaped on the student vacillates between hilarious and needlessly demeaning. The ceaseless degradation creates a gray area of quasi-fulfillment where the cinematic rewards are anything but pure. Whiplash keeps the audience on its toes, never letting you think for a moment that the road to artistic success is easy or that one’s competition isn’t eagerly awaiting your total failure for their gain.

They can be a help or a hindrance, but they're always at their best when shouty and officious. Here's some of the best examples of movie police chiefs
This week's Clip joint is my art director and designer Mark Evans. Follow him on Twitter here, and take a look at the 'zine he recently put together on the subject of police chiefs.
This is based on my love of the officious, aggressive and over-the-top police chief in movies. The one-liners, the put-downs and their very immoderate nature have always endeared me to this hilarious and iconic film character.
Beverly Hills Cop II
We start with the perfect, cliché-ridden sequel that precisely encapsulates this type of character, Inspector Todd from Beverly Hills Cop 2.

Pucci, 26, recently completed work on the indie dramas All Together Now, about a group of twenty-somethings at a rock concert, and The Story of Luke, about a young man with autism.

Lou Taylor Pucci has always been one of those actors that floats just under the radar. While the young actor has made some solid films (Thumbsucker, Brotherhood, The Music Never Stopped), he's never really gotten his big break. Well, that day has arrived. Variety reports that Lou Taylor Pucci is now in talks to play a role in the Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell-produced remake of The Evil Dead. Just last week it was announced that Suburgatory's Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez will also star in the movie. Like the original film, the story follows a group of young adults to a cabin in the woods where they accidentally release an ancient evil after reading out of the Book of the Dead. Pucci will play Eric (this movie is speaking to me), a character described as "an intense academic whose intellectual curiosity gets his group of friends into trouble.

Oscar nominations are just about a month away and Academy voters are, hopefully, working on seeing as many films as possible in the categories they're responsible for. Final word has come down that 265 films total are eligible for awards this season, everyone from Abduction to Zookeeper. It was also announced that 39 songs are eligible for the always controversial and entertaining Best Original Song Oscar, including three songs from The Muppets, one from Captain America: The First Avenger, one from Pom Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Sold and many more. Read the full list and rules of eligibility for each category after the break. Deadline posted the press releases for these piece of news here [1] and here [2]. The 265 films that are eligible for Oscar nominations adhere to these guidelines: To be eligible for 84th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight,...

Chicago – A little piece of Sundance is coming to Chicago for the third year in a row. The Sundance Film Festival USA is a one day tour of films in different cities across America that brings one of the biggest film festivals of the year even closer to the rest of us.
For the third straight year, the Music Box Theatre in Chicago will host a movie playing at Sundance for one night only. In the past two years, the films “Jack Goes Boating” and “The Music Never Stopped” made their way from Sundance to Chicago and this year the film “2 Days in New York” will come to the windy city. Starring, written, and directed by Julie Delpy and also starring Chris Rock, “2 Days in New York” will play at the Music Box on Thursday January 26, 2012. Special guests will appear with the film, but none have been officially announced yet.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences just announced the 39 nominees eligible for
Best Original Song this year. The Academy doesn’t have the best track record when narrowing down the list to five. In recent years they’ve overlooked some of the best songs including Bruce Springsteen’s track written for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. As usual some of the nominees seem worthy of appearing on the list while others will have you scratching your head wondering why they are even being considered. There has been a new rule added to the voting process this time around. It states that songs must be judged in the capacity that they appear in each film. According to The Collider, in early January the voting body will get together and watch clips from each eligible movie in which the 39 songs are featured, after which they will determine the nominees. Oscar has just gotta sing!
39 songs from eligible feature-length motion pictures have been chosen as potential nominees for Best Original Song for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, according to Deadline.
The list of possible Best Song nominees certainly contains some no-brainers, including no less than three tunes from "The Muppets" and two from "Happy Feet Two," though there are some surprises in there as well, such as "Taking You With Me" from "Our Idiot Brother" and "Star Spangled Man" from "Captain America: The First Avenger."
To be eligible for an Oscar nomination, a song must "consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits," according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 39 selections that are in the running for the Best Original Song award at the 84th Academy Awards. The official announcements will be made in January. Among the most notable titles on the list include three tracks from The Muppets, Alan Menken’s “Star Spangled Man” from Captain America: The First Avenger, and Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi’s song “Gathering Stories” (which director Cameron Crowe co-wrote) from We Bought a Zoo. All are great selections, but I find myself singing Life’s a Happy Song everytime it pops up on my iPod.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the thirty-nine songs eligible for nominations in the Original Song category.
How do the songs qualify? In order to be eligible, "a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits." Hence, we hear most of the original songs during the first part of the closing credits.
So here's what's coming up next: On Thursday, January 5, the voting members of the Music Branch will see clips featuring each song, in random order. Right after the screenings, members will vote using a point system of voting. The average score is 8.25 and if there's no song that achieved that score, then there will...

Thirty-nine songs from eligible movies are in the running for nominations in the Academy Awards' Best Original Song category for the 2012 Oscars. Madonna's Golden Globe-nominated "Masterpiece" from W.E. isn't to be found on the longlist, but Elton John is on there for Gnomeo and Juliet's "Hello Hello." As usual, kiddie flicks dominate the list, with Rio, Happy Feet Two, Winnie the Pooh, Gnomeo & Juliet, and The Muppets featuring multiple contenders.
The original songs and their respective movies are listed below in alphabetical order by film and song title. Note that several of the songs are not in English, e.g., Sohan Roy's thriller DAM999 is in Hindi and Malayalam, the biographical documentary José and Pilar's "Já Não Estar" is in Portuguese, and "Coeur Volant," from Martin Scorsese's Hugo, is in French.

Your guess is as good as mine in this category as I have no idea what to expect from this category. If I were to go by nominees listed for the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards I would say Elton John's "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo and Juliet and Mary J. Blige's "The Living Proof" from The Help are two that look to be front-runners as both were recognized by both orgs, but even then, who knows? You will notice Madonna's song "Masterpiece" from W.E. is not included as it doesn't conform to the Academy's rules for the category, which state a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

Chicago – Yesterday, we brought you some of the most engaging and memorable supporting performances of 2011. As much as I love some of the acting work in that feature, it’s nothing compared to the talent on display below. The fact is that the Best Actor and Best Actress categories this year are arguably more crowded than ever, with an amazing number of performances that will be remembered for years to come. My runner-ups, in both categories, could have easily beaten most other years’ top five lead nominees. It actually pains me to list some of them outside this year’s top five, but we’ve had an embarrassment of riches in 2011. What an amazing year for acting.

In that footage, we see the healing power of music: Giffords, who still requires hours of daily therapy helping her recall words, sings along to Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” As one of her therapists explains of survivors of brain injuries,...

Back in June we had learned that Julia Ormond, who was most recently seen in the Emmy winning TV movie Temple Grandin and the Sundance selected The Music Never Stopped, had snagged the role of the Big Blue Boy Scout's Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van in Man of Steel. Well, while the film is in the middle of production, a last minute casting change has taken place as Deadline reports Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer, who has been seen in Angels & Demons and Munich, will star opposite Russell Crowe as Superman's birth mother. No reason has been given for the change, but Zurer starts filming this week. Once again, it's important to note the wide array of talent that has come together for Zack Snyder's new take on Superman. In addition to the aforementioned talent for Superman's alien parents, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will be playing Clark Kent's ...

J.K. Simmons is a worker, or as he calls it, a “journeyman actor.” The J.K. Simmonses of the world feature epic sized filmographies, even for an individual year. In 2009 alone, the actor appeared in 10 movies. Most were small parts, but 10 movies? He’s a busy man. One would think with that type of work ethic, Simmons would be an actor that cared more about the checks than the quality of the work. From speaking with the character actor, that didn’t seem to be the case. Simmons has, finally, got a starring role film under his belt — recently, anyway — that we can see. The Music Never Stopped (out now on DVD) is one of those small, non-cynical, heart-string yanking dramas. It’s a father/son story, so if you’re sucker for daddy issue movies, this one’s for you, kid. Here’s what actor J.K. Simmons had to say about appearing in nearly everything, being...

Paul Cantelon is the composer of the upcoming drama Violet & Daisy. The movie is written and directed by Geoffrey Fletcher who won an Academy Award for his adapted screenplay for 2009′s Precious. Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel are playing two teenage assassins who believe they’ve landed a straightforward assignment but soon find themselves thrown off their game when their latest target isn’t who they expected. James Gandolfini and Danny Trejo are co-starring. Fletcher is producing with Bonnie Timmermann and John Penotti (Awake). The project is the second movie scored by Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Other Boleyn Girl) to premiere this year following The Music Never Stopped, which debuted at Sundance. It was just announced that Violet & Daisy will be premiering at the Toronto Film Festival next month. No distribution deal and release date has been announced yet for the film.

Jim Kohlberg’s film The Music Never Stopped is based on “The Last Hippie”, an essay by Oliver Sacks, who also wrote the titular book that the film Awakenings was based on. It’s easy to lump Kohlberg’s film into that weepy sub-genre of comatose patients sometimes gradually, other times suddenly rediscovering the endless days that passed them by. The wrenching struggles of Gabriel Sawyer (the perpetually young Lou Taylor Pucci), whose memories were following the removal of a massive benign tumor, are no different, and Kohlberg offers no stylistic flourishes to individualize his film. What the director does well, though, is keep the camera trained on his performers, in particular Gabriel’s estranged father, Henry, played by J.K. Simmons in a rare leading role. Surrounded by a strong cast including Julia Ormond and Cara Seymour, Simmons and Pucci easily overcome the genre’s more maudlin hurdles and turn...

Chicago – If you’re not familiar with the name J.K. Simmons, you almost certainly know his face or maybe even just his voice. From “Oz” to “Juno” to “The Closer” to “Portal 2” and even the M&Ms commercials, the very-talented actor has been everywhere in the last few decades. The great character actor recently took time out of his busy schedule to give a call to HollywoodChicago.com on the eve of the release of his excellent drama “The Music Never Stopped” on DVD. The sentimental story of a man bonding with his brain-damaged son (Lou Taylor Pucci) through the music of his generation (The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, etc.) wasn’t given nearly the theatrical run it should but will hopefully find a strong life on DVD.

J.K. Simmons has appeared in countless films and television shows, but the Michigan-born actor, 56, is only now making his debut as a leading man. In Jim Kohlberg's The Music Never Stopped (available on DVD this week), Simmons plays a hard-nosed father dealing with an estranged son (Lou Taylor Pucci) who suffers a brain tumor that keeps him from forming new memories. The only way the pair can connect is through the very rock music -- an impressive soundtrack for the micro-budgeted indie that includes Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and the Beatles -- the father despises. Like Almost Famous, The Music Never Stopped is a delicately written and acted movie loosely based on true events that profiles heartbreaking human moments around a powerhouse set list... only on a much more intimate scale.
