Boybands suck, but this show is still funny.
3 April 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel are the only two reasons boy-bands are still around. A while back in my review of "Hannah Montana," I mentioned that the programming executives at The Disney Channel didn't get the message that the pop-explosion of the late-1990's was over. However much to my surprise, both Disney and their competitors at Nickelodeon are keeping this trend alive. The difference between Disney and Nickelodeon was that Disney adopted The Jonas Brothers, while Nickelodeon created Big Time Rush.

Some have claimed that "Big Time Rush" is a copy of "Jonas," but I disagree. The only thing they truly have in common is that both are about boy-bands and both used Monkees-style humor. Until it was reformatted in the second season, I was going to refer to Jonas as "The Monkees with Parents," because back in 1986, Peter Tork did a radio interview where he bragged about "The Monkees" being one of the first sitcoms where father didn't know best, and no parents were there in the first place. With the presence of The Jonas Brothers under their belt, the Disney Channel has managed to swipe the same humor and add a family that Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Tork didn't have. Big Time Rush does the same thing, but it gives one of the kids a single mother. Bear in mind however, that this really isn't a defense of either show.

Unlike what Bob Rafelson and his crew did with their show, Scott Fellows and the producers of this show gave the band members fictional surnames, and places their origins in Minnesota. For those who are horrible with geography, that's right next to the state where Demi Lovato's Sonny Munroe originates from. They're recruited by Gustavo Rocque(Stephen Kramer Glickman) to come to LA and be part of his latest boy-band project. Rocque is clearly based on real-life boy-band creator Lou Pearlman.

Besides a lot of the slapstick humor from that nearly 45 year old sitcom, one of the things that makes this show good is Kendall's little sister Katie, played by Ciara Bravo. Think of a nicer version of Megan Parker, and you've got Katie Knight. Then there are the love interests; Camille, the teen method actress queen played by Zoey 101's Erin Sanders, and Jo Taylor, played by Katelyn Tarver.

There are two things Camille seems to known; 1)How Hollywood works, and 2)How much she loves Logan, which is quite a lot! Her first scene in the season 2 premiere where she squeals with delight as she tackles him is reminiscent of those episodes of "The Flintstones" where Dino affectionately tackles Fred. If this weren't a kids show, she do a lot more to him than knock him over trying to hug him.

Jo Taylor is a whole different story. Like the boys, Camille, and many who stay at the Palmwoods Hotel, She's a new arrival from North Carolina who wants to make it big in Hollywood, and originally won the hearts of all four of the Hockey Heads, but eventually becomes Kendall's girlfriend.

It's a good thing that the three girls I mentioned are on the show, and that it has the kind of antics that it has, because otherwise there wouldn't be that much about it that would keep my interest. Not being a teenage girl of the early-21st Century, the music isn't exactly the kind I'm into. I agree with katzinoire's view of boy-bands, although I'm a decade older, and I might find one or two of their songs appealing. It's primarily the live-action cartoon humor of the show that makes it worthwhile more than anything else.
