Eva Mendes is known for her insanely good looks and has often been considered one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. The Hitch star is known for her roles in films such as Ghost Rider, We Own The Night, and The Place Beyond the Pines, the latter of which was where she met her future partner Ryan Gosling.
While it has been a while since she has starred in any film, Eva Mendes was the subject of a tabloid rumor back in 2007. The actress was reportedly rumored to be pregnant after being seen by paparazzi with a ‘bump’. However, the actress denied the claim back then and Evan promoted body positivity by speaking about how putting on a little bit of weight was not that big of a deal.

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt (Raven Jackson)
A film that feels uprooted from deep beneath the earth, Raven Jackson’s poetic, patient debut is a distillation of cinema to its purest form, a stunning patchwork of experience and memory. Tethered around the life of Mack, a Black woman from Mississippi, as we witness glimpses of her childhood, teenage years, and beyond, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt becomes a sensory experience unlike anything else this year. Shot in beautiful 35mm by Jomo Fray and edited by Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s collaborator Lee Chatametikool, there’s a reverence for nature and joy for human connection that seems all too rarified in today’s landscape of American filmmaking. – Jordan R.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

Mark Wahlberg had a funky bunch of acting roles on his resume beginning in the mid-’90s but found that he had to put more focus on producing if he was going to try to compete directly with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
Speaking with Cigar Aficionado, Mark Wahlberg said, “I started becoming a producer out of necessity…I didn’t want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever was already established before me and were the guys at the time, and Leo [DiCaprio], to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it. I was always proactive in trying to find material and things that I could produce, that I knew was right for me, create my own destiny.”

Actor Denzel Washington has worked alongside Hitch star Eva Mendes twice in their careers. The first time they collaborated proved to be a life-changing experience for Mendes, who wasn’t too thrilled with her film career at the time.

Joaquin Phoenix has lived through a lot. Perhaps that's part of what makes him so adept at embodying characters in bizarre situations and in moments of crisis - and few onscreen characters have ever suffered through so many crises, so quickly, as Joaquin's character in Ari Aster's "Beau Is Afraid," which premieres on April 21.
In the film, Joaquin plays the title character, Beau, a middle-aged man seemingly trapped in a perpetual adolescence. We immediately learn he has a complex relationship with his mother and that he lives in a horrifically derelict apartment building. But after he misses a flight to see his mother because someone stole his keys and suitcase, the world as he knows it begins to collapse. First his building is overtaken by criminals, and then he learns his mother's head was crushed by a lamp - and the horror only escalates from there.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Right on the heels of “Armageddon Time,” James Gray is teaming back up with Focus Features. The acclaimed filmmaker will direct “Ezekiel Moss,” a new feature set in the Great Depression, for the distribution company, a source confirmed to IndieWire.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Filmmaker James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” opens in limited theaters on October 28. The drama, a 1980s period piece, sees Gray return to his roots in New York. But instead of a crime drama, like his early New York films, “Little Odessa,” “The Yards,” and “We Own The Night,” his latest is a deeply personal, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale about family, privilege, the American dream, and saying goodbye to the past.

This originally premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago, and it just premiered at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. It's also playing at the New York Film Festival, which seems like it's grand "coming home" party. From acclaimed filmmaker James Gray, Armageddon Time is a deeply personal story on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship and the generational pursuit of the American Dream. The film features an all-star cast starring Michael Banks Repeta (aka just Banks Repeta) as the boy named Paul, plus Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong. Reviews from festivals have been mixed, but the performances are the best part about it.

Past is present, and nailing those specifics turns James Gray’s heartfelt 1980 Queens family drama into something universal. Gray’s fifth Cannes entry and best film to date, “Armageddon Time” is carried by Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as the parents and grandfather, respectively, of sixth-grade rebel Paul Graff as the younger filmmaker.
At a sunset dinner in Antibes ahead of the Thursday night premiere, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski told the “Armageddon Time” team, “This is the last night the movie is yours.” The movie played like gangbusters at the Palais and is generating upbeat reviews. Filmgoers beyond Cannes could embrace this likely Focus fall release (it’s a natural for the New York Film Festival), which like most Universal movies these days, from “The Northman” to “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” will hit PVOD three weeks after theaters, followed by Peacock. James Gray makes a fifth trip to the Palme d’Or competition with Armageddon Time – his eighth feature film. Following The Yards (2000), We Own the Night (2007), Two Lovers (2008), and The Immigrant (2013), this new project features newcomer child actors Banks Repeta and Jaylin Webb who are surrounded (and supported at least in theory) here by a world of adults: supervisors, teachers, parents, grandparents and other people in positions of authority. Supporting players include Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins and corporal punishment for your own good father played by Jeremy Strong.

When I watch a movie by the writer-director James Gray, I often have the sensation that I’m seeing two films in one: the story being told and the one hovering offscreen — the one that’s all about his aspiration to be something larger than a mere storyteller. Early Gray films like “The Yards” (2000) and “We Own the Night” (2007) were modest tales suffused with his desire to be making “a ’70s movie.” “Ad Astra” (2019) was a lavishly scaled outer-space thriller suffused with his desire to be making “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
“Armageddon Time,” Gray’s eighth feature, marks a break from most of what he has done before. It’s a more personal project — an autobiographical coming-of-age memoir movie, set in Queens, New York, in 1980 and featuring an 11-year-old hero, Paul Graf (Banks Repeta), who navigates the sixth grade and the wider world that starts to feed into it. It’s a skillful,...

Writer-director James Gray has been to the Cannes Film Festival in competition on four previous occasions with We Own the Night, The Yards, The Immigrant and Two Lovers but has yet to walk away with a prize. Maybe the fifth time will be the charm? It certainly would be deserving as Gray comes back to his beloved New York City roots with the highly autobiographical and intriguingly titled Armageddon Time.
Lest you think that with that title this is more akin to his previous film, the Brad Pitt-starring sci-fi Ad Astra, think again. It couldn’t be farther apart and reps a return to his more frequent thoughtful character-driven family drama explorations rather than space, though that figures in at least one way. After offering up a reduced, slightly belated 2021 edition, the Cannes Film Festival is back in its usual plum May spot, and with an enviable lineup to match. This year’s festival includes new films from some of cinema’s biggest names, including David Cronenberg, Kelly Reichardt, Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, the Dardenne brothers, James Gray, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ruben Ostlund, Park Chan-wook, and more.
There are big studio efforts on offer, along with singular indies from a range of rising stars and new features from some of our favorite auteurs.
Digging through the Cannes lineup is always a treat, but this year’s selection feels particularly rich and rewarding. You can’t go wrong with this one, but that didn’t stop us from trawling this year’s picks to unearth the 18 titles we’re most excited about seeing, the creme de la creme of a festival that strives to only program the best.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Filmmaker James Gray is back and it's time for armageddon. The director of "Ad Astra," "The Lost City of Z," and "We Own the Night," among other movies, has assembled an impressive cast for his next feature, "Armageddon Time." So no, it's not a sequel to the Michael Bay film, "Armageddon." But it does feature the talents of Academy Award winners Anthony Hopkins and Anne Hathaway, Emmy Award-winning "Succession" star Jeremy...

When Bosch first premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2014, the streaming world was in a very different place. Netflix had only House of Cards and Orange is the New Black under its belt. Hulu was still a joint venture owned by multiple conglomerates. Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock didn’t even exist. Now, in June 2021, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases is highlighted by one last outing for LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Bosch season 7 premieres on June 25. This will be the last batch of episodes for the series, before a spinoff gets rolling for IMDb TV. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and filmmakers and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, Conor and I return to The City on a Hill to discuss the career of Mark Wahlberg. The B-Sides include: Contraband, Broken City, The Gambler, and All the Money in the World.
Among the many Wahlberg-related topics that come up, one of the biggest is his continued, consistent success as a movie star. Contrary to what I wrote the Broken City review seven years back, Mark Wahlberg is anything but a “second-tier movie star.” If anything, he’s a more successful version of Bruce Willis when analyzing the box-office receipts.
Additional issues include the two kinds of Mark Wahlberg (tough guy with a heart of gold or high-pitched intellectual), and what the latter kind can get you.

Joker was a monumental success for Warner Bros. The DC movie earned more than a billion dollars despite a modest budget, making it the highest grossing R-rated film in history. And though director Todd Philips was adamant before release that there would not be a Joker 2, money talks and if the studio believes there’s more money out there, then they’re going to produce a follow-up. And it seems there’s indeed more money to be made.
We’ve heard countless reports that’ve pointed to a sequel being in early development and now, to give us an idea of what it could look like, YouTube user StryderHD has another cool fan trailer for us, featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s return to the Oscar-winning role and teasing what appears to be a pretty intriguing follow-up.
Phoenix is obviously terrific in the titular role and this teaser shows a lot of his brilliant work from Joker.

Now in its sixth year, the event supports the development of a selection of projects awarded grants by the Doha Film Institute (Dfi) as well as their attached directors and producers.

Genovese capo Fat Dave Iacovetti flew south and fleeced Florida in mob series Silent Partners
Martin Scorsese’s mobster movie swan song The Irishman will not spell the death knoll for gangster films as long as independents continue to mine lesser known criminals. The upcoming series Silent Partners brings a Genovese family unit to series on the same service that brought Robert De Niro and Al Pacino's mob pairing. "Netflix is excited about the project and the addition of Nick Villalonga," Gary Pastore (The Sopranos) told Den of Geek.
