A couple months ago, it was announced that eight of the classic Universal Monsters movies – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, and Creature from the Black Lagoon – would be receiving a limited edition 4K box set release. That box set was supposed to reach store shelves today, October 3rd… but you may have noticed that it’s not available, and Amazon stopped taking orders. That’s because the release of the box set has been delayed until February of 2024.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the following message from Universal: “Due to an unexpected packaging issue, the originally planned October 3, 2023 release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s upcoming 4K collectible box set of the “Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection” is moving to February 13, 2024. We appreciate your patience and are very sorry for the inconvenience.”

For Sunday’s Oscars 2020 ceremony on ABC, producers had a difficult decision of which film industry people would make the cut and who would unfortunately be left out of the “In Memoriam.” For the segment, for the song “Yesterday” performed by Grammy champ Billie Eilish.

Rudy Behlmer, author of “Memo From David O. Selznick” and nearly a dozen other film-history books, died Friday at his home in Studio City, Calif. He was 92.
Behlmer was among the most widely respected historians of Golden Age Hollywood, in part because of his insistence upon researching “primary source material” and not relying on faulty memories or exaggerated press accounts of the time.
“Memo From David O. Selznick,” which Behlmer edited from thousands of Selznick’s private letters, telegrams and memoranda, was a best seller in 1972. Behlmer first interviewed the “Gone With the Wind” producer for a 1963 article for “Films in Review,” one of dozens of magazine pieces he wrote over the decades.
Other books followed: “Hollywood’s Hollywood: The Movies About the Movies”, “Inside Warner Bros. 1935-1951” (1985), “Behind the Scenes: The Making Of…” (1989) and “Memo from Darryl F. Zanuck” (1993).

One of the best Hollywood historical epics takes Technicolor to Mexico for a Production Code version of La conquista: the Inquisition is still bad, but the Church is exonerated. Likewise with the invasion — Cesar Romero embodies a marvelous Hernán Cortés, substantially less murderous than the one we now know from accurate history books. Tyrone Power is the heartthrob hero and newcomer Jean Peters the lowborn girl who loves him. The magnificent scenery is matched by the music score of Alfred Newman.

Casablanca is rightfully considered one of the greatest films of all time, but even broken down into its granular aspects, it’s a masterful piece of work. From its crackling dialogue that’s been repeated and referenced ad infinitum within popular culture to its sweeping scope and the story’s palpable melancholy, its impact has been etched in the fabric of cinema. Gary Leva makes another persuasive case for its enduring legacy with a new 35-minute documentary about its production called Casablanca: An Unlikely Classic.
Gathering together cinematic stand-bys like Steven Spielberg and William Friedkin alongside various historians, former big wigs, and esteemed cinematographers and production designers, Leva painstakingly combs through all of the aspects that cemented Casablanca’s reputation. At this point, the praise is almost redundant given the canon of critics that have worshipped at director Michael Curtiz’s feet, but the documentary feels particularly special for the...

Today, you say Black Swan and images of a crazed Natalie Portman come to mind, but there was an earlier film by that name, a swashbuckler that has been forgotten by many. The first Black Swan is a 1942 adventure starring Tyrone Power and Maureen O’Hara based on Rafael Sabatini’s novel. Having already succeeded with adaptations of Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk, this seemed a natural followup for 20th Century Fox.
Out on Blu-ray from 20th Century Home Entertainment, The Black Swan tells the story of the infamous Captain Morgan (Laird Cregar), attempting to lead a more virtuous life. He is appointed as Governor of Jamaica, charged with ridding the waters of his former brigands. No one trusts the notorious former pirate, complicating his work although he’s successful using his personal relationships to convince Captain Jamie Waring (Power) and Tom Blue (Thomas Mitchell) to end their criminal work.

You know that the classic Universal monster movies are some of the most important and influential horror films ever made. But you also are not keen on spending $150+ for the newly released, fully remastered special edition box set. Let’s take a look at the set, the remaster, the bonus features. Then you can make an informed decision.
All of the films come with its own featurettes that discuss the historical and cultural significance of each film. These have clearly been made at least a decade ago (probably for an earlier special edition) but really, how much info can change about films that were made nearly 100 years ago? The films also include plenty of the expected archival goodies: posters, artwork, trailers, and the like. A collectible booklet inside the set includes a little bit of history and background on each film and their stars and directors.

It’S Alive! It’S Alive! For 81 years, those words have surely been said from at least one person to another every year around Halloween time, and for good reason. Not only is Frankenstein arguably the best of the Universal monsters from the 1930s, the monster at the film’s center has become a pivotal image for October 31st. So, to round our horror slate of commentaries, we’re diving into the classic original, our oldest film covered to date. Naturally, this means we aren’t listening to any of the cast or crew from the film (although we get some quotations from director James Whale). Since the first commentary track came out in 1984 – King Kong Criterion Collection, which will be covered at some point here – films from days of old have to settle for film historians to talk shop while they play out. That’s not to say there aren’t invaluable bits of information found...

Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolf Man, these four movies seem to be the four always thought of when someone says Universal's "Classic Monsters". I'd seen all four along with probably the fifth most thought of in these terms, The Mummy. Only last week, Universal released the amazon asin="B008FL8OTK" text="Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection" on Blu-ray and yesterday my copy finally arrived. Inside were three movies I had never seen -- The Invisible Man, The Phantom of the Opera and The Creature from the Black Lagoon -- and just because it was first chronologically, I began with The Invisible Man and wow, it's deliciously wicked. Certainly the film has aged, the effects are far more "obvious" than today's, but if you're realistic about these kinds of things, the effects today are no less obvious than those of 1933. A man can't turn invisible...

In celebration of the October 2nd Blu-ray release of the Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, veteran horror historian Scott Essman has prepared a truly monstrous trip back through time for you classic horror fans!
It’s a quiet dusty morning in the summer of 1916 and all but a small eastern region of the San Fernando Valley is largely undeveloped, to say nothing of unpopulated. For the past year, inside of an unassuming front gate just over the hill from Los Angeles proper, two men are trying to forge their path in the fledgling motion picture business: Lon Chaney and Jack Pierce. Nascent actors Chaney, 33, and Pierce, 27, were completely unknown, but each had an angle; they could both work magic out of a simple makeup case, fully transforming their faces and even parts of their bodies to put themselves into a better position to be cast in a role.

Chicago – The best musical of all time was recently released in a beautiful, lavish, packed limited edition — the kind that we see typically around the holiday season but rarely in July. The gorgeous box set for the timeless “Singin’ in the Rain” is easily one of the best Blu-ray releases of the year to date, a must for true movie collectors.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
What more is there to say about “Singin’ in the Rain” that hasn’t already been written? (Although it is interesting to notice the thematic and visual parallels to the 2011 Oscar winner for Best Picture, “The Artist,” something I hadn’t considered when seeing Michel Hazanavicius’ film last year.) “Singin’ in the Rain” is a pure delight, the kind of movie that I enjoy more with each passing year. And even though I’ve seen the movie a dozen times (I have a mother who adored it and...

Already taken through a polishing process ten years ago, Singin’ in the Rain is back for its 60th Anniversary, and it has really been given a superior treatment for the Blu-Ray release.
A legendary film, and one that now makes a cute pairing with similarly “talkie” exposition film, The Artist, Singin’ in the Rain is not only a cute and clever statement on its own industry and an entertaining love story, but it’s also one of the greatest musicals ever. It is such an icon of the genre, and put together so well, that a list of the top musical numbers in film would be hard-pressed not to include every musical number from Singin’ in the Rain. Not least, Gene Kelly‘s title number, which is among the most recognizable, and most referenced scenes in movie history.

You can listen to such eminent writers and scholars as Kevin Brownlow, Rudy Behlmer, Carl Davis, Joseph Musso, Randy Skretvedt, Marilyn Moss, Patricia Hanson, Thomas W. Holland, and John Bengtson. About time! Time to stop working and focus on something that Really matters. After a lot of hemming and hawing, Universal is bringing all of our favorite famous monsters of filmland (hey…) to Blu-Ray in a massive collection featuring eight movies and eight monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man, Phantom Of The Opera, The Invisible Man and The Bride Of Frankenstein) jam-packed with awesome special features. The Creature will even be in 3-D, if your TV allows such a wondrous thing. I could go on and on about this, but I think what you really want to read is the press release (complete with titles and special features) from Universal. Give it a read and when it’s available for pre-order (the collection is released October 2nd), we will put up a link immediately.

Chicago – Marlon Brando was at or near the peak of his screen charisma when Elia Kazan tapped him to star in his adaptation of Tennesse Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” recently released on Blu-ray in a digibook edition with a booklet about the making of the film but no new special features. The transfer is nice and the previously released special features are stellar, but this feels like something of a missed opportunity to do something a little more special for the HD debut of this influential film.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“A Streetcar Named Desire” is a fantastic play and a good movie that I find more interesting historically for how much controversy the film caused on its release. It barely made it to the big screen due to some of its more controversial scenes and was drastically censored when it did. There’s a fantastic documentary on the Blu-ray that...

Chicago – Every seasoned movie lover can attest to having a favorite shot in Michael Curtiz’s 1942 classic “Casablanca,” a picture practically overflowing with indelible imagery. The first appearance of freedom fighter-turned-café owner Rick (Humphrey Bogart) decked out in a white tux, the tearful letter that turns to literal tears in a rainstorm, the final walk through the fog…all unforgettable.
Yet the shot that remains closest to my heart is the one that lingers on the face of Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), as she becomes hopelessly lost in the evocative notes and lyrics of a song from her past. No actress embodies earthy sensuality and misty-eyed passion quite like Bergman, who was at the peak of her luminous beauty at age 26. Her trancelike state of nostalgic longing never fails to mesmerize me, as her eyes convey what words could only feebly articulate.

There are bigger movies, and there are better movies, but few movies have become the go to selection when throwing out favorite or best film titles, and fewer still have become as synonymous with Hollywood itself. A film that was famously released without a great deal of expectation coming from anyone involved with its creation, it has become not only an icon of the movie industry, but an inescapable part of American culture.
The Casablanca 70th Anniversary Edition adds even more bonuses to watch, plus some physical goodies, making it a must buy, and great gift, especially for anyone who hasn’t broken down and taken the title home before.
The standard caveat to this edition, especially among the serious fans who pay attention to such things, is going to be the fact that the film had an Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray release only a few years ago, and that edition...

(Albert Parker, 1926, U, Park Circus)
As Johnny Depp is about to make his fourth appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the latest film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it's worth looking back to the authentic, silent, swashbuckling classic, an early two-colour Technicolor production that the athletic Douglas Fairbanks starred in 85 years ago. Fairbanks, who'd created United Artists with Chaplin, Dw Griffith and Mary Pickford, came to the role after appearing as Zorro, D'Artagnan and Robin Hood, and he's a marvellous presence as the only survivor of a brutal pirate attack, bent on avenging his father's death by infiltrating a pirate crew. He performs his own stunts, fences gracefully and rescues the beautiful heroine, Billie Dove. This is a handsomely restored print, using the original score, and has an informative commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer. The film's American director, Albert Parker, came to Britain and gave up film-making to become a successful agent,...

Blu-ray is often sold as the ideal way to watch big-budget blockbusters on your home theater system. Yet, as Disney's home entertainment division has shown, the format can also be used to give classic films a new lease of life. In the last couple of months Warner Home Video (Whv) has re-issued several such movies on Blu-ray. Two of the most recent are The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Maltese Falcon, starring Humphrey Bogart. There is little point in reviewing the quality of these films because they are widely acknowledged as landmarks in cinema history. Instead, this review focuses on how they look in Hi-Def and the extra features provided on each release.
The good news is that Whv, like Disney, has done its past proud. As with many of its releases of modern blockbusters, the company knows how to deliver a quality product.

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.

It’s a WWII-fest, with five films starring the legendary Errol Flynn. These adventures from 1942-1945 are a solid showcase of not only the star, but era itself, and the DVD set adds to the effect with some great bonuses. With vintage newsreels, classic cartoons, and more, you can relive the experience of these films like never before.
From a unique period in film history, putting out war adventures with a unique derring-do perspective, and starring the unique screen charm of Flynn, this is a collection with a surprisingly varied appeal. Mostly directed by another legend, Raoul Walsh (White Heat, The Tall Men), the set also manages to deliver an effort of style, with Walsh generally aiming at some manner of art in his semi-pseudo-propaganda vehicles.

One of cinema’s most beloved creature features is set to make its way to Blu-ray. According to Home Media Magazine, Warner Home Video has announced that they have not only remastered the 1933 Rko film, King Kong, but that they will be bringing it to homes in all of its 1080p glory, September 28th, 2010.
One of Criterion’s early Laserdisc releases (the only one owned by our faithful editor, Ryan Gallagher, interestingly enough), King Kong will be seeing a rather extensive release on Blu-ray. The release will include a commentary featuring film legend Ray Harryhausen, as well as visual effects artist Ken Ralston, and also includes a seven part documentary on the making of the film, trailers, and a documentary on Kong creator, Merian C. Cooper. The disc will also include a 32-page book from film historian Rudy Behlmer.
This is one film that has deserved a Blu-ray release for a long time.

"King Kong," the master of all movie beasts and one of the more important movies of the 20th century, will make its Blu-ray debut Sept. 28, 2010.
Warner Home Video is behind the Blu-ray iteration of the 1933 Rko classic, which will have all of the extras from the highly rated two-disc DVD special edition released in 2005 coinciding with the Peter Jackson remake.
The Blu-ray will come with a 32-page booklet featuring rare photographs and trivia and is written by film historian Rudy Behlmer, who apparently personally interviewed "Kong" creator Merian C. Cooper back in the day.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, "King Kong, the master of all movie beasts and one of the more important movies of the 20th century, will make its Blu-ray debut Sept. 28, 2010.
Warner Home Video is behind the Blu-ray iteration of the 1933 Rko classic, which will have all of the extras from the highly rated two-disc DVD special edition released in 2005 coinciding with the Peter Jackson remake.
The Blu-ray will come with a 32-page booklet featuring rare photographs and trivia written by film historian Rudy Behlmer, who apparently personally interviewed 'Kong' creator Merian C. Cooper back in the day."
Blu-ray owners? A winner is you!

Chicago – If local news reports are to be believed, nearly everyone reading this will go holiday shopping sometime during the upcoming weekend. To those of you that are considering a DVD giftset purchase like the recent release of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Christmas Vacation,” or even “Mamma Mia!,” you couldn’t do much better than the breathtaking five-disc release marking the 70th anniversary of “Gone With the Wind”.
The lavishly-packaged new collector’s edition giftset of “Gone With the Wind” is one of those overwhelming releases in which the film itself practically becomes an afterthought to the collectibles and special features. Honestly, if you haven’t seen “Gone With the Wind,” it’s required viewing for the history of film. One of the most beloved movies ever made, even if you don’t love it (and I’ll admit that it’s not a personal favorite of mine like it...

I admit, I went into Jj Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek (Paramount, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 Srp) not wanting to like it, based on my less than enthusiastic view of Abrams’ previous work and a healthy level of fondness for Trek (when it was done right - not in the crap Berman/Braga/Voyager/Enterprise/latter-day films era). So yes, I had to be won...

One of the best, most beloved films ever is now available on DVD with three release options for every collector. Gone with the Wind is in stores now, and you can enjoy the remastered classic in Blu-Ray Collector's Edition, Standard Collector's Edition, or 2-disc Anniversary Edition. While the standard DVD remaster looks great, and the commentary track by historian Rudy Behlmer is a wonderful trip through this amazing film, it's hard to imagine not opting upwards for one of the bigger sets. Just as was the case with the recent release of The Wizard of Oz, the remaster is wonderful work, but the special edition releases are filled with amazing bonuses that you don't want to pass up.

Tana leaves brewing in the microwave, I spent seven days in full-on Mummy mode. It was such a dead-Egyptian-walking time for me that I considered binding myself in stray Band-aids before taking a nap, but, no, That would be crazy. Isn’t sipping hot, steaming tana leaves tea—with natural, Mummy-controlling powers—enough?
I’ve always been fascinated by The Mummy, that 1932 Universal picture starring Boris Karloff as the venerable Imhotep, resurrected by an inopportune reading of the life-giving Scroll of Thoth—first seen (however briefly) in slow-motion, wrapped-up Mummyness, later all parchment-faced, leathery, dried-out humanity as “Ardath Bey.” In this form, fez-topped Bey prefers “not to be touched,” because, of course, he might fall apart and break into ancient dust if someone should give his hand a good shaking.
Even today, I can remember when I first saw that fantasy film at age 10. I had spent most of Saturday...
