Her father had a secret interest in ballet. He enrolled Cyd in ballet classes when she was 6. She loved to dance, so he also had a ballet barre and full-length mirror installed in their home for her.

She had polio as a child. Part of the reason her father enrolled her into ballet was to rebuild her strength.

During a family vacation in Los Angeles, her parents enrolled Cyd, who was 12, to a Hollywood ballet academy. Later, she attended full time.

At 14, she auditioned and joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo where she met (and four years later eloped with), Nico Charisse, an instructor there.

During her tours with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, she was obligated to use stage names: Natacha Tulaelis (her birth name being Tula) and Felia Siderovaa.

She was known as MGM's resident ballerina, although she never had any aspirations to work in film.

She was given the lead female role in An American in Paris, but declined due to pregnancy. A year later, she took her unforgettable role in Singin' in the Rain.

Fred Astaire called her "beautiful dynamite".

She can be seen dancing in Blue Mercedes's "I Want to be Your Property" (c.1987) and in Janet Jackson's video for "Alright" (1990).

In December 2000, in Monoco, Princess Caroline presented Cyd with the Vaslav Nijinsky Award for her lifelong contributions to the world of dance.

In 2006, President George W. Bush presented Cyd with the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities, the highest official U.S. honor available in the arts.
