In Gregory Widen's 1995 horror film "The Prophecy," angels look like ordinary people but are a little ... off. They are typically clad in black suits, but move like birds, snapping their heads around quickly, as if constantly aware of potential danger. They also have unnatural balance, able to perch on the edges of buildings or the backs of chairs without toppling over. When an angel calls Uziel (Jeff Cadiente) dies in the first "Prophecy," a medical examiner finds that the corpse is missing its eyes and that its blood chemistry is similar to that of an unborn fetus. Angels, it seems, are also intersex, possessing both a penis and a vagina. Angels, it seems, lurk among us, resentful of humanity.

Two years ago, director David Bruckner had such sights to show us with Hellraiser, a direct-to-Hulu horror movie that reimagined Clive Barker’s iconic horror franchise. The film debuted on Hulu in October 2022, starring Jamie Clayton as a brand new Hell Priest.
Was Bruckner’s Hellraiser a success for Hulu? And will we be getting more new installments in the film franchise? According to producer Keith Levine, Hellraiser 2 is indeed in the works!
Levine tells ComicBook.com in a brand new chat, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but [David] Bruckner is involved in those conversations.”
“We spent a lot of time and energy relaunching that world,” Levine continues. “A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design, figuring out how we’re going to pull them off, and we learned so much.

However, there was a time when the actor struggled in Hollywood, despite his good looks and prolific acting skills. Rumored to run for James Bond, Batman, and even Twilight, Henry Cavill lost out on many renowned roles during his initial years. This might sound rude, but it's doubtful that the "Wrong Turn" films are anyone's ride-or-die franchise. In fact, when we did our own ranking of the 15 best horror movie franchises, the "Wrong Turn" property didn't even make the cut. And yet, despite the odds, seven "Wrong Turn" films (including a prequel and a reboot) have been released since 2003. That's a new "Wrong Turn" movie every three years on average! The series centers around a family of inbred cannibal mutants in Appalachia, leaning into every insulting cultural stereotype about mountain folk and turning it into a horror story. The "horrifying hillbilly" trope is nothing new, but the "Wrong Turn" series has become the grotesque poster child of the subgenre.
Against the better judgment of most, I have willingly watched all seven "Wrong Turn" films and ranked them here for your viewing pleasure. Let's throw out our maps, completely ignore our Gps,...

Doug Bradley would consider a return as Pinhead in the 'Hellraiser' franchise. The 69-year-old actor has starred as the iconic antagonist in eight movies in the horror series and explained that he has never "retired" from the part despite being replaced by Jamie Clayton in the 2022 reboot. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Doug said: "I certainly never say never. I've never said I was done with it. I've never said I'm retired from it."I'm sensible about these things, too. I was in my mid-30s when I first played the character, and I was just turning 50 when I played him the last time. I ain't in that age range anymore. I'm now in my 70th year, and to some extent I think special effects makeup is a younger man's game."Doug explained that his dream return would be as "an older, darker Pinhead" in an adaptation...

Demon to some and angel to others, Doug Bradley achieved horror icon status for his portrayal of Pinhead in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser and its first seven sequels. Although he hasn’t reprised the role since 2005, the consummate actor wouldn’t rule out a return. “I certainly never say never. I’ve never said I was done with it. I’ve never said I’m retired from it.”
He continues, “I’m sensible about these things, too. I was in my mid-30s when I first played the character, and I was just turning 50 when I played him the last time. I ain’t in that age range anymore. I’m now in my 70th year, and to some extent I think special effects makeup is a younger man’s game.”
Bradley’s ideal circumstances for a return would be an adaptation of Barker’s 2015 novel The Scarlet Gospels, which concerns the end of Pinhead.

Doug Bradley returns to familiar territory in Thorns, a Hellraiser-inspired movie that melds themes of religion and science with practical special effects. The horror icon was intrigued by the script and his mysterious character, Archbishop Jenkins.
“The script catches you or the script doesn’t catch you, and there was a lot about this that did straight away. It’s an interesting story; the interface here between science and religion, between exploration of outer space and inner space. It’s an apocalypse movie, basically,” Bradley explains to Bloody Disgusting.
“But at the same time, [director] Doug Schulze always says that he sees the movie as a kind of a retro homage to movies of the ’80s and to makeup effects movies.”
In his own words, Bradley describes the plot: “There is a satellite out in space that has gone rogue and is transmitting peculiar signals back to Earth, which is having strange effects on people.

An homage to films including Hellraiser, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist, upcoming horror movie Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” and Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a bloody exclusive clip this week.
From director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns features horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), said to be playing a “mysterious archbishop.”
In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon his lost faith to stop the signal from jumpstarting the end of the world.”
Additionally, Dark Planet Releasing has announced the theatrical release of Thorns, in collaboration with Emagine Entertainment, B&b Theatres, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, and MetaMedia.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

Throughout their messy and prolonged courtship, "Bones" couple Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) played their fair share of romantic musical chairs. They both tested the waters of a workplace relationship fairly early on in the show's run, with Brennan hopping into bed with Booth's FBI colleague Tim "Sully" Sullivan (Eddie McClintock) -- and causing a bit of a ruckus among Fox's censors -- in season 2. This was around the same time that Booth restarted his own amorous association with the then-newly-appointed boss of the Jeffersonian Institute's forensic division, Camille "Cam" Saroyan (Tamara Taylor).
As the saying goes, if you can't be with the one you love, hook up with the one who will abruptly vanish in a few episodes (unless they become a fan favorite like Cam).

Earlier this year, we caught word that Arrow Video’s 4K box set release of the first four Hellraiser movies (get it Here) would include a workprint cut of the 1996 installment, Hellraiser: Bloodline (watch that one Here), allowing fans the chance to see what the movie was going to be like before Dimension Films started tinkering with it. Now that the Arrow Video box set is available, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has a copy of the Hellraiser: Bloodline workprint – and in the video embedded above, he offers his review of this cut of the film, comparing it to the theatrical version we’ve been watching for over twenty-five years. The fourth installment of the Hellraiser franchise, Hellraiser: Bloodline, was the last film of the series to be released theatrically. It was also notorious for its troubled production, eventually leading director Kevin Yagher to walk away when Miramax demanded reshoots. Miramax then brought in Joe Chappelle to complete the film.
When Yagher saw the finished cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, post reshoots, it’d become so removed from his vision that he had his name removed from the credits using the Alan Smithee pseudonym, as did Chappelle. While Yagher’s version of the prequel/sequel is lost to time, Arrow’s Hellraiser: Bloodline Workprint assembles the footage Yagher shot, offering fans the closest we’ll ever get to a Director’s Cut. Arrow’s workprint makes for a more coherent and fascinating version of the troubled franchise installment.

If there’s one thing horror fans pride ourselves on, it’s knowledge of genre trivia. If there’s a second thing, it’s our Halloween costumes. We love the opportunity to dress as our favorite horror movie characters almost as much as we love showing off our intricate memory of cult classics. Any opportunity to combine those two treats feels like a spooky season miracle.
Classic costumes like Michael, Jason, Freddy, and Jigsaw will always be available, but sometimes you want a look that will help you stand out in a crowd. The following list will get you started on a deep cut costume sure to impress the hardcore horror fans at your Halloween soirée.

In the world of film, you will have icons that appear with a few manufactured into something better than they are. The Net and the Hollywood star system of the past do that today with some questionable ability and content on both sides of the camera being hailed as something special. The icons of the horror genre rise to the top like Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Their names are often above titles of films even reduced to the use of the surname as in Karloff and Lugosi without losing box office appeal. Entering this realm is the feature documentary of actor Robert Englund simply called Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.
I honestly was not a huge Freddy fan towards the end of the A Nightmare On Elm Street series of films because for me the stories became set pieces for effects.

"Pearl" star Mia Goth has some thoughts on why the Academy Awards often fail to recognize standout performances in horror films. "I think that it's very political," she told Jake Hamilton (via Twitter). "I think that it's not entirely based on the quality of a project, per se." Like many horror fans, Goth wants that to change.
Horror fans love the actors who star in such films, often becoming quite devoted to them. It's not just the ones who deserve awards, either. To understand just how important all horror film performances are, one need only take a look at the talent lineup for any given horror convention. Many people are just as happy to meet someone who was killed third in a random "Friday the 13th" sequel as they are to talk to special effects artists and directors.
Sometimes, though, actors in horror films get swapped out for various reasons.

In the last days of 2022, we learned that production had wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars: Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). The presence of Amplas and Cardille in this film seemed especially fitting since The Trip was filmed in Pennsylvania, not far from Romero’s beloved Pittsburgh. Nearly ten months later, The Trip is now ready to start making its way out into the world – and the premiere is going to be held at the Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on October 26th! In anticipation of the premiere, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Winner of the top Jury Prize (Best Feature) at the Fantasia Film Festival, this brutal and dark serial killer film utilizes the backdrop of an unsolved true crime.
With Megalomaniac, prolific filmmaker Karim Ouelhaj, Méliès d’Or winner for The Frozen Eye (2016), brings us his fourth feature and by far his most savage.
In the film, “Martha and Félix are the children of the Butcher of Mons,...

The folks at The Asylum are the masters of the mockbuster – those being lower budget movies that are made and released around the same time as bigger budget studio movies with similar titles and concepts. Some of their previous films include Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers, Almighty Thor, Battle Star Wars, Top Gunner, Jurassic Domination, and The Little Mermaid. It’s pretty easy to figure out what each one of those was trying to cash in on. Now, with a new Exorcist sequel (The Exorcist: Believer) set to reach theatres on October 6th, The Asylum has announced that they will be releasing a movie called The Exorcists on September 29th – and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above!

"Buffy The Vampire Slayer" season 4 is one of the show's more contested runs, but episode 10, "Hush," is a fan-favorite. When silent, grinning demons called the Gentlemen come to Sunnydale and rob the characters of their voices, the series makes a rare turn into outright horror.
Series creator (and controversial figure) Joss Whedon, who personally wrote and directed "Hush," recounted in the episode's DVD commentary that he wanted to test himself as a visual storyteller. He felt the visuals in "Buffy" had become too functional; the dialogue was guiding the storytelling to simple shot/reverse shot techniques. The obvious way to break up this monotony was to make an episode with little dialogue.
"Hush" forces the characters to find new ways of communicating and the story to deliver information without language. Looking at his career wholistically, Whedon never really outgrew using his dialogue as a crutch, but even he acknowledges: "It...

The people behind promoting Thorns knew exactly what they were doing. A lot of the imagery I saw showed a ‘monster’ of sorts wearing mainly black and with a crown of thorns covering their eyes. Definitely inspired by Pinhead and the Hellraiser movies but they also managed to get Pinhead himself – Doug Bradley – on board to star in the movie. And you know what? It worked because that was why I wanted to check Thorns out.
The story sounds much more bizarre on paper than it actually is on screen. An ex-priest who now works for NASA (I’m guessing that doesn’t happen too often in real life?!) is sent to a remote observatory that has gone silent since receiving a radio signal from outer space.

Hey all! John Fallon here aka The Arrow. Our docu-series, Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian: 80’s Horror Memories (binge it here), which thoroughly explores the decade in horror, is now 15 episodes in. We just wrapped 1980, 1981 and 1982 and we are about to go in balls deep into 1983 this coming Monday, August 28 on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel.
A series of this ilk doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an army of producers, writers, editors and our sole narrator to make the magic happens. So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

Doug Bradley in Thorns Photo: courtesy of Frightfest
Of all the films at this year’s Frightfest, hybrid occult horror/science fiction tale Thorns is probably the goriest. It features some truly gruesome special effects, but there’s also a lot of interesting visual design work, and – the factor which is likely to draw in the most fans – it features a supporting turn from Doug Bradley, aka Pinhead from Clive Barker classic Hellraiser. Here he plays not the thorn-faced monster whom you’ll see in the publicity materials, but an archbishop who guides a former priest on a mission to investigate an observatory where strange things are afoot. Together with director Douglas Schulze, he joined me in the run-up to the festival to discuss the film.
“My manager contacted me. Some of his clients had worked with Doug previously so he was able to vouch for Doug,” he says of...

On March 8, 1996, the fourth film in the "Hellraiser" film series, "Hellraiser: Bloodline," was released in theaters. It purported to be the final film in the series, as it would feature the death of Pinhead (Doug Bradley), the demonic sadomasochist summoned from the rough sex dimension via an elaborate magical puzzle box.
"Bloodline" took an impressively ambitious narrative tack, taking place over three time periods, several centuries removed from one another. It began in 1796 with the original maker of the puzzle box, then fast-forwarded to the present and caught up with Pinhead and a descendent of the puzzle-maker. Its third act took place in 2127 on board a space station where Pinhead would be summoned to torture astronauts.
At the time, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" was largely dismissed by audiences. It didn't get good reviews, and many looked askance at the idea of Pinhead in space. It came at a time when several horror...

Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.
It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

Despite existing for over half a century and evolving into one of the most profitable creative industries in the world, it’s only recently that filmmakers have gotten the hang of properly depicting video games on the big screen. This is likely because we’re now seeing a generation of writers and directors who actually grew up playing these games instead of observing them as outsiders – and that also applies to genre creators.
In fact, when it comes to horror, there have been a surprising amount of games featured in scary movies, with these interactive experiences often serving a central role in the story in much the same way that a cursed book or video tape might have been used in an older horror flick. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the scariest video games in horror movies, as fictional...

A couple years ago, screenwriter Peter Atkins – who worked on the scripts for the first three Hellraiser sequels – published his original screenplay for the famously troubled fourth film, Hellraiser: Bloodline (the script is available for purchase at This Link), saying, “Whilst you’ll never get to see a Director’s Cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, you can read in this book what was supposed to be…” But even though the production was too complicated for us to ever see a proper director’s cut, there is a “newly uncovered workprint version” – and it’s going to be included in Arrow Video’s upcoming 4K box set release of the first four Hellraiser movies!
Arrow Video’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment box set is available for pre-order Here and will be released on October 23rd. This is a UK release, but 4K discs are region free.

Freshly announced this morning, Arrow Video is bringing the Hellraiser franchise to 4K Ultra HD with a brand new Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment Limited Edition 4K Uhd set.
The upcoming set features the following Hellraiser movies:
Hellraiser (1987) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
The most exciting aspect of this release? Arrow’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment set features the newly uncovered Workprint Version of fourth installment Hellraiser: Bloodline!
This never-before-seen version of the 1996 sequel, directed by Kevin Yagher, “provides a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production.” The initial cut of the movie ran 110 minutes long, but the studio executives at Miramax demanded major changes that resulted in Yagher departing the project. The final cut ultimately ended up running 85 minutes long, and Yagher was so unhappy with the finished product that he took his name off the movie. That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is...

The Hellraiser episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Clive Barker is someone horror fans know and love, someone that can easily be referred to as a Master of Horror. To some, he is more than that. The man has created entire universes of characters in his writing, deep with lore and some truly disturbing elements. Early on, his work became the source of film adaptations, but let’s be honest, they weren’t all exactly successful in bringing his words to the screen. Rawhead Rex was a bit of a mess; Underworld has issues, so why should he trust his Hellbound Heart to anyone else to direct?
And this is basically how Hellraiser (watch it Here) was born. Kinda. There is, of course,...

Hyper-violent must-see South Korean film Project Wolf Hunting streams exclusively on Screambox on May 15. Written and directed by Kim Hong-Sun (The Chase), the award-winning film has drawn comparisons to Jason Takes Manhatten, Con Air, The Raid, and Resident Evil.
