Legendary producer and director Roger Corman, who died recently at age 98, had an immeasurable impact on American cinema as we know it. The number of actors, writers, and directors who learned their craft on a Corman production is staggering, and he was known for giving people chances to prove themselves on the low-budget pictures he either produced or directed himself. Tons of notable names went through the so-called "Corman school," including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, and Joe Dante, just to name a few.
Three-time Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson is another significant alumnus of the Corman school of filmmaking — in fact, his very first movie, "The Cry Baby Killer," was a Corman production, and it provided Nicholson the first of many starring roles across his incredible career. For as much as Al Pacino is known for his quiet intensity — especially in the reticent and calculating role of Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" — what comes to mind when we think of the actor are usually his loud outbursts. It's amazing that such vocal power comes from this short king. But Al Pacino doesn't just yell for the sake of being overdramatic, he uses his voice to capture how the high emotions of his characters bubble to the surface, especially in high-stress situations. While some of these screaming scenes verge on self-parody, there's no denying their impact on his legacy. Pacino's volcanic energy is rooted in his love of theatre, where actors are not afraid to go big and loud. As an actor with a passion for Shakespeare, Al Pacino has a deep understanding of how important voice is in a role. He recognizes that dialogue should be treated like music,...

When it comes to trilogies, the third one often ends up being the weakest of them all, and unfortunately, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather 3 wasn’t immune to it. Released in 1990, 16 years after the sequel, the film failed to live up to the bar set by its predecessors, which are often regarded as some of the best the medium of cinema has to offer.
Moreover, due to salary disputes, the threequel didn’t see Robert Duvall’s Tom Hagen return, a character that was pivotal to Michael Corleone’s story in the first two entries. Later, when asked about his decision to stay out of the third one, Duvall had a pretty candid response.

It’s no secret that the main motivation behind reviving the franchise after over a decade was money.

Andy Garcia was much more of a gentleman with Bridget Fonda in “The Godfather Part III” than he was with Joe Mantegna.
Garcia said during “The Pete and Sebastian Show” that his co-star Fonda was “nervous” to be fully nude for a scene in the 1990 Francis Ford Coppola feature. Garcia instead suggested that she wear his coat, which is what we see on film.
“Bridget Fonda was extraordinary to work with, and that’s my coat she’s wearing,” Garcia recalled. “That’s my coat. And initially, you know, they wanted her to be, you know, naked. And she was very nervous. And I said, ‘No, no. She’s not gonna be naked, no. Come on.'”
Garcia continued, “I said to [costume designer] Milena Canonero, I said, ‘Milena, why doesn’t she just wear my leather coat. It’s on the bed, it’s on the floor. Let her come out in my coat.

Many A-list celebrities have fallen in love with one another after assuming the role of a couple on screen. Sadly, the majority of those love tales end badly as the couple separates for ideological reasons. One such pairing was Diane Keaton and Al Pacino, who fell in love with each other during the filming of the classic 1972 flick, The Godfather, helmed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Keaton was still relatively new to the industry when Paramount Pictures cast her as Kay Adams in one of the biggest movies ever made. It was there that she also got to know Pacino, her former partner. After being paired opposite in the film series, the on-screen couple soon started dating off-screen.

But did you know that, despite the unmistakable chemistry that sizzled through our cinema screens, Keaton and Pacino’s real-life romance had a sad ending?...

Have you ever thought about what it feels like to be part of something legendary yet somehow stand apart from its central narrative? Diane Keaton felt like a fish out of water in the male-dominated world of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1972 epic crime film The Godfather.
The Oscar-winning actress, 78, was once unfiltered about a memory that’s as raw as it is real: feeling like an “outcast” while working in Coppola’s cinematic tour de force, The Godfather. Notwithstanding the enormous success of the movie and her own remarkable performance, Keaton’s role in the film alongside actors like Al Pacino strengthened her place in cinematic history.

However, she never felt more important on set than her co-stars in this film. The Francis Ford Coppola film was inspired by the same-titled Mario Puzo 1969 novel, which had already garnered a sizable fan base.

"A Time For Killing" (also called "The Long Ride Home") isn't one of the best Westerns of all time, nor is it the most memorable, but the 1967 film still comes up in conversation thanks to its unique status as the very first movie role Harrison Ford was ever credited in. Ford played a young, sideburn-wearing Union soldier in the film, which followed the exploits of a group of captured Confederate soldiers on a mad dash for Mexico — none of whom realize the war has officially ended.
Aside from Ford's debut as Lieutenant Shaffer (for which he was credited as Harrison J. Ford), "A Time For Killing" is most noteworthy for its status as an abandoned Roger Corman flick. Corman started making "A Time For Killing" after already churning out cult classics like "A Bucket of Blood" and "The Little Shop of Horrors," but the low-budget filmmaker was replaced by "99 River Street...

The films of Francis Ford Coppola, at their core, are all about family. That theme goes for behind the camera as well as in front of it; according to interviews with Coppola on the Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD special features of the "Godfather" films, the director wished for the actors portraying the Corleone crime family to feel as much like a real family as possible before cameras began rolling. So, prior to making "The Godfather," Coppola arranged for the primary family members — Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale and Talia Shire — to meet at an Italian restaurant in New York City, have dinner together and improvise as their characters the entire time.
With all that preparation, and the fact that the filmmakers were adapting Mario Puzo's 400-page novel into what became a three-hour movie whose narrative spans the length of a decade on screen,...

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from the wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
The list of sequels to masterpieces that can be considered masterpieces themselves isn’t a very long one; “The Godfather Part II” is an obvious candidate, and arguments can be made for James Cameron‘s “Aliens” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “The Color of Money” all have their partisans, and Ingmar Bergman scored a late-career triumph with his “Scenes From a Marriage” sequel “Saraband.” One movie that almost never gets mentioned in this company is “The Two Jakes,” the 1990 sequel to “Chinatown” directed by its star,...

It's been almost 50 years since "Rocky" first arrived in 1976, and in that time the franchise has changed dramatically. The "Rocky" saga has now grown beyond original star Sylvester Stallone, with Michael B. Jordan's "Creed III" barely mentioning the man who birthed the now legendary film series. Whatever you think about that, everyone can surely recognize the staying power of the "Rocky" movies, which have formed part of our pop cultural history for the better part of a half century.
None of this could have happened without the first entry in the saga, of course. "Rocky" introduced the world to the scrappy Southpaw from South Philly, who led a film that was remarkable for its realism and affecting performances. Much of that was down to Stallone who, having written the script during a particularly challenging time in his personal life, insisted on starring in the film, only to wow audiences...

On Dec. 20, 1990, Francis Ford Coppola unveiled The Godfather: Part III at its premiere at the Academy Theater in Beverly Hills. The film went on to gross $136 million globally and nab seven Oscar nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It’s business, and personal. A complex depiction of Michael Corleone’s dying-days attempt to cement the family in the “legitimate” business world and attain spiritual redemption, this third installment of the Corleone Family chronicle is a full-bodied, albeit somber dramatic orchestration.
However, legitimacy has its price — respectability exacts a grayness and a tempering of one’s style and substance — and this splendidly conceived, although often confusing saga, is itself vulnerable to the dramatic doldrums of Michael’s venture into “respectable” dominions.

It’s not just your imagination — Hollywood tentpoles are getting longer.
Whether it’s awards contenders like the three-and-a-half-hour “Killers of the Flower Moon” (206 minutes) or popcorn flicks like the upcoming nearly three-hour “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (158 minutes), movies in 2023 are testing the bladders of audiences and the patience of theater owners.
While journalists continue to debate the surge of longer-than-expected movies, Hollywood insiders and a majority of paying moviegoers see them as more of an annoyance than a problem, a recent poll shows. Theaters would generally prefer every major movie to come in at under two hours. And many audiences would appreciate an intermission. But if the movie works, the runtime is merely trivia.
Of the 10 longest movies in 2022, eight were more than two-and-a-half hours long, and two were over three hours. In 2023, seven films so far are 150 minutes or more, with two more...

Francis Ford Coppola has always viewed his films as living pieces of art, and continues to tinker with many of his masterpieces decades after their theatrical bows. He famously altered “Apocalypse Now” twice, revising the original theatrical cut with 2001’s “Apocalypse Now Redux” and 2019’s “Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut.” He also reworked his polarizing “The Godfather Part III” to reframe it as an epilogue. And he spent $500,000 to re-cut “The Cotton Club” for a restoration that premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2017.
Sofia Coppola followed in her father’s footsteps as a celebrated auteur, but don’t expect “Lost in Translation Redux” any time soon.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Sofia Coppola was asked about her father’s passion for continuously revising his work. She revealed that he has encouraged her to feel empowered to do the same with her own films, but she isn’t interested in changing them.

Priscilla Presley may be the former wife of the King of Rock ‘n Roll, but Sofia Coppola is the daughter of the Godfather of Cinema.
Coppola, who wrote and directed “Priscilla” based on Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” told The Hollywood Reporter that she could relate to Presley’s story of living in someone else’s shadow. Coppola is, of course, the daughter of Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola.
“Oh, it would be a juicy, glamorous story,” Coppola said of reading Presley’s memoir. “But then I was struck by how much I connected with it emotionally. I thought it was just going to be a fun adventure, and I was surprised by how relatable her story was.”
The “Virgin Suicides” director continued, “I know from my family what it’s like to be inside a show business family. I know that growing up, people are looking at you in a different way.

Al Pacino says he doesn’t remember much of the 1970s. So, The Godfather, Serpico, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, …And Justice For All are some of the greatest movies ever, let alone of the 1970s: all a blur. But unfortunately, he remembers Gigli and 88 Minutes, Revolution, Righteous Kill, and too many more all too well. He is a guy that always goes over the top, and sometimes it results in brilliance and other times, it causes Mr. Pacino to become a parody of himself. But is his legacy strong enough, and is Al in the middle of another comeback?
It’s a diverse career of ups and downs and whatever he was thinking with Jack and Jill. And so let’s find out: Wtf Happened to… Al Pacino?

Until now, Diane Keaton has been wondering for decades why she was even cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.
On Friday, the filmmaker took to his Instagram Stories for an “Ask me anything” session, encouraging fans to ask him about his life, work and career achievements. Among those who responded was none other than the Book Club: The Next Chapter actress.
Coppola proceeded to post Keaton’s question for all to read: “Why on Earth did you choose me for The Godfather?!!”
The Oscar-winning actress took on the role of Kay Adams-Corleone, the wife of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, in the 1972 film, which quickly became a cult classic.
The director responded to her question, writing, “I chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something more about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting. (I was right).”

Diane Keaton still doesn’t know why she was cast in “The Godfather” more than a half-century after its release.
The “Annie Hall” actress asked director Francis Ford Coppola via Instagram Stories, “Why on Earth did you choose me for ‘The Godfather’?!”
Coppola replied, “I chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting. (I was right).”
The auteur added that it was Keaton’s breakout performance in the musical “Hair” that in part convinced him to cast her.
“I was invited by Fred Astaire to accompany him to see ‘Hair’ which he couldn’t make ‘hide nor hair’ out of,” Coppola wrote. “You were in it, and I remember your beautiful singing voice.”

Meghan McCain has reversed her decision to stop watching HBO’s “And Just Like That” after learning that Kim Cattrall will return to the “Sex and the City” revival series.
“I couldn’t bear to watch the woke-fest ‘Sex and the City’ reboot ruin the show I loved. But now sizzling, sexy Samantha is back… and just like that, so am I,” the former co-host on ABC’s “The View” wrote for The Daily Mail.
“A large part of [the woke-fest] was due to the fact fan-fave character Samantha — played impeccably by Kim Cattrall — had failed to return,” McCain continued. “Samantha was outrageous, glamorous, hilarious. She put sizzling sex into the city. And with her departure came an inevitable slump into dullness. So how thrilled I was to hear the shock announcement this week that Samantha will soon be back on our screens.”

Helmut Berger, the Austrian actor who became an international star through films by directors Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica and Massimo Dallamano, died today in his home city of Salzburg. He was 78.
His death was announced by his agency, Helmet Werner Management.
“Helmut Berger was one of the greatest and most talented actors European cinema had ever seen,” the agency said in a statement. “His mentor, the Italian star director Luchino Visconti, recognized this talent immediately. With the films The Damned, Violence and Passion and Ludwig II he created an eternal monument to Helmut Berger.
The statement continued, “”No other actor after him embodied the Bavarian fairy tale king as expressively as the native of Bad Ischl [Austria], whose portrayal of Ludwig II is internationally recognized as a masterpiece.”

Helmut Berger, the Austrian actor and regular Luchino Visconti collaborator who become one of the most recognizable faces of European arthouse cinema in the 1960s, has died at the age of 78. The news was announced by the actor’s agent, who wrote that he died “peacefully but nevertheless unexpectedly” on his management company’s website.
Born in Austria in 1944, Berger moved to Rome and began pursuing an acting career after expressing disinterest in following his parents into the hospitality industry. He initially found work as an extra before meeting Visconti in 1964. The “Rocco and His Brothers” director gave Berger a small part in his 1967 film “The Witches,” an omnibus film also directed by the likes of Vittorio De Sica and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Berger and Visconti began a professional and romantic relationship that would go on to shape the European cinema landscape of the subsequent decade.

Diane Keaton still doesn’t get why she was cast in “The Godfather”.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress was asked about her past statements about feeling miscast in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic gangster drama.
“Oh, are you kidding? Of course! I was terrified,” Keaton said. “I didn’t understand why me. I mean, I went up to the audition. I didn’t even really — I hadn’t read it. See, this is bad! But I needed a job, so I got up there. I’d been auditioning around for about a year, and then this happened like that. And I kept thinking, ‘Why me? Why would he cast me?’ I didn’t understand it. I still don’t, really.”
In the film, which featured one of her early breakout roles, Keaton played Kay Corleone, the wife of soldier-turned-mafia boss Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino.

Bridget Fonda reaffirmed that she will remain retired from acting in a rare on-camera appearance on Monday.
In a video obtained via The Daily Mail, the 59-year-old was approached by paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday and simply said, “No” when asked about staging a potential Hollywood comeback. After further prodding, she declined the idea once again, saying, “I don’t think so,” then gave the greatest explanation for why she wouldn’t give another go for the glamorous life: “It’s too nice being a civilian.”
You heard it from Fonda first: fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and she would certainly know as a third-generation member of the elite Hollywood acting family that includes her grandfather Henry Fonda, father Peter Fonda, and aunt Jane Fonda. Bridget Fonda made her first screen appearance in 1969’s Easy Rider, and eventually became an icon in...

When closely examined, Hollywood history is a remarkably fickle thing. Not only have some major casting decisions almost been thwarted by circumstance but entire movies have been made (or not made) thanks to one key event.
One such movie is "Bram Stoker's Dracula," made by Francis Ford Coppola in 1992. The film became a landmark adaptation of the perennial horror novel (and character), ending up as one of the 10 highest-grossing films of '92 and influencing further versions of the Count and other vampire films that followed.
Yet it almost didn't happen — not with Coppola at the helm, anyway. The director was not on board from the beginning of the film's development, with screenwriter James V. Hart the one who was attempting to shepherd it to the screen for over a decade before star Winona Ryder attached herself to the film, saving it from being relegated to a cable TV movie.

Sofia Coppola knows what it's like to be a celebrity kid. The daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola has mostly kept her two kids, Romy and Cosima Mars, out of the spotlight throughout the years. "I don't want them ever to be jaded," Sofia told The Guardian in 2017 on why she shields her kids from the public eye. "I never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff. I just want them to have a childhood."
Things changed, however, when Romy recently shared a TikTok explaining that she'd been grounded for trying to charter a helicopter. "Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I'm grounded because I tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad's credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend," Romy says in the March 21 video. She doesn't go on to make any pasta,...

Paramount was heavily committed to the Eddie Murphy business in the 1980s. After the "Saturday Night Live" star went supernova with the blockbuster trio of "48 Hrs.," "Trading Places" and "Beverly Hills Cop," the studio, which had him under a long-term contract, sought to synergize their superstar with some of their pre-existing franchises.
One of the most bizarre attempts at wedging Murphy into an ongoing series was "The Godfather Part III." As Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo balked at participating in a third film throughout the 1980s, Paramount ordered 15 treatments and scripts by nine or so different screenwriters (one of which was penned by future Disney CEO Michael Eisner). One of these proposed sequels had a role for Murphy, who once said "I would act in 'The Godfather' for nothing." Unsurprisingly, this iteration never made it anywhere close to the runway.

Oscar nominations were announced Jan. 24 and in the best-picture race, voters have come up with the most wide-ranging lineup in decades, full of populist choices.
The 10 films nominated for Oscar’s top prize represent a cross-section of blockbusters, specialty films, indies and mid-range Hollywood movies. There is also a healthy mix of long-established studios, streamers and specialty companies. There’s one film not in the English language, one co-directed by an Asian American (and starring a mostly Asian American cast) and one by a woman.
The breadth of the list is a sharp contrast to most best picture slates of the past two decades.
Best picture nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards also offer several distinctions, including two sequels nominated in one year, which is a first; and two contenders that are in the year’s worldwide top 10 at the B.O., the first time that’s happened since...

Is a Francis Ford Coppola film the work of genius, or madness? Depending on who you ask, it could be either — or both — but whatever it is, it's responsible for some of the most ambitious, exhilarating films of all time. Coppola is, without a doubt, best known for the "Godfather" triptych; though the series ended on a less-than-triumphant note, the director bounced back in a major way just two years later with "Bram Stoker's Dracula." The film was a critical and commercial success when it premiered in 1992 — and it likely never would have happened without an infamous missed connection during "The Godfather Part III." Before Sofia Coppola stepped up to play Mary Corleone (and to rather mixed effect), Winona Ryder was slated for the role. But after filming three movies back to back, Ryder suffered from "nervous exhaustion" and was forced to withdraw, paving the way for Coppola's brutally-panned performance.

Prior to this year, only 11 sequels had ever been nominated for either of the Golden Globe Awards for Best Film (Drama or Comedy/Musical). Over half of them were added to the list after the turn of the century, and three have joined the group within the last decade. This year, an unprecedented total of three continuation films are competing for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s top honors. If “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” succeeds on its comedic bid or the drama prize goes to “Avatar: The Way of Water” or “Top Gun: Maverick,” the number of Best Film Golden Globe-winning sequels will rise to four.

It’s not quite an elephant in the room, as much as maybe a tiny chihuahua hiding behind the couch waiting to pounce when Oscar nominations are announced on January 24, but there is a chance that more than one movie in the Best Picture race will be a sequel. Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc will be 16th film character to inspire multiple Golden Globe nominations
Nearly three decades into his acting career, Daniel Craig earned his first Golden Globe notice for his lead performance as eccentric detective Benoit Blanc in the 2019 mystery movie “Knives Out.” Although he was defeated in this Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor race by Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”), his portrayal of Blanc may still be honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since the character’s story has now continued in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” Even a nomination for the sequel would make him only the 16th performer to receive multiple Golden Globe mentions for playing a single film character.

Looking back on his 35-year career at the Red Sea Film Festival, Andy Garcia noted how far things had changed since he started out as a Cuban American actor. “When I started there were no opportunities. Only gang members.” He would tell casting directors: “I didn’t study Latin acting 101, I studied Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams.” Has the situation improved? Garcia offered qualified optimism: “It’s gotten better, especially in the casting. Not so much in the stories.”
His career has included working alongside stars like Sean Connery, Al Pacino and George Clooney, and under the direction of top helmers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma and Steven Soderbergh.
“It was a dream for me to be an actor and work on films. I’ve really been blessed, but I’m still dreaming. There are a lot of things I want to do, but I’ve had a...

Gray Frederickson, who was part of the Oscar-winning production team for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather Part II,” died Nov. 20 of prostate cancer in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was 85.
Frederickson had been called as “the Godfather of Oklahoma film” for his efforts to boost filmmaking in his home state.
“Gray is one of the most accomplished people to have ever come from our city,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt told The Oklahoman.
Frederickson left Oklahoma to attend the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, then started his career in Rome as producer of “Natika” in 1963. He joined Sergio Leone’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” as production manager, where he met Clint Eastwood, who would become a longtime friend.
He met producer Albert S. Ruddy on the Robert Redford film “Little Fauss and Big Halsy,” which led to him coming aboard “The Godfather” as associate producer.

Gray Frederickson, the Oscar-winning producer who worked alongside Francis Ford Coppola on the Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now and One From the Heart in a collaboration that spanned more than four decades, has died. He was 85.
Frederickson died Sunday at his home in Oklahoma City after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, Karen, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Frederickson shared the best picture Oscar in 1975 with writer-director-producer Coppola and producer Fred Roos for The Godfather Part II — the first of just two sequels to take the big prize — and the trio (and Tom Sternberg) were nominated again for Apocalypse Now (1979).
“I got on a winning horse. I was with Francis Coppola, who’s no slouch. I was lucky enough to be carried along with him,” Frederickson told The Oklahoman in a 2021 interview. “I got lucky with him, but he says he got lucky with me.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a film that, much like its protagonist, crosses oceans of time. Director Francis Ford Coppola, one of the filmmakers at the leading edge of the “film school” generation of the seventies, tapped into the talents of the young up-and-coming stars, both in front of and behind the camera, to tell a familiar story using very old techniques. Opting to avoid the rising tide of digital effects, expensive location shooting, and elaborate artifices in favor of “naïve” in-camera effects, stage-bound shooting, and lavish costumes as “sets,” Coppola and his collaborators created a thoroughly unique retelling of Dracula. The look of the film is simultaneously timeless and on the cutting-edge of innovation. Though it celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year, it still feels as modern and transgressive as the day it was released.

One of the most high-profile releases in the fall of 1992 was Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of “Dracula,” starring Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves. It marked Coppola’s follow-up to the Oscar-nominated “The Godfather Part III” from 1990, and it was one of Hopkins’ first major projects after winning the Best Actor Academy Award for “The Silence of the Lambs.” Released on November 13, 1992, the horror flick took first place at the box office its opening weekend with 30 million, and it ultimately earned more than 80 million overall. Read on for our appreciation of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” on its 30th anniversary.
Although the film wasn’t unanimously loved by critics, many of them were quick to sing the movie’s praises. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times said, “The movie is an exercise in feverish excess, and for that if for little else, I enjoyed it.” Owen Gleiberman in Entertainment Weekly wrote,...

The first time I saw Bram Stoker’s Dracula on television, I hated it. But then, it could be argued, I didn’t really see the movie Francis Ford Coppola had made.
This irony rings true for a number of reasons. First, my introduction to Gary Oldman’s fright wig, and the luminous crimson cloak that accompanied it, came not at the theater or even on VHS. It was in the middle of a Saturday afternoon on a fuzzy TNT cable broadcast where much of the gore, and pretty much all the eroticism, had been edited out in case a younger viewer was watching. And to the basic cable censors’ credit, I was exactly one such viewer: a lad of 12 or so who had devoured Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and was eager to watch what was credited to be “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” It was right there, in the title!
