If you are someone who uses Netflix Instant as your sole source for TV and movie entertainment, then you know how easy it is to fall into a rut. It can be so hard to find quality movies after a while and you end up watching the same stuff over and over. Well, search no more! Here are 6 often overlooked movies that you may not have seen or had a chance to watch yet. (Or you may not know whether they are worth your time but trust me they are!)

If you’ve somehow avoided the charms of actress Jess Weixler thus far, this first trailer for Jay Gammill‘s Free Samples may grate on your nerves. Who is this flighty chick fucking up something as simple as giving out free samples of ice cream from a truck? Who is this young lass breaking Jesse Eisenberg‘s heart? Who drops out of law school to be a loser? Why should I care? You should care precisely because it’s Weixler who is playing shiftless leading lady Jillian as said law-school-drop-out-ice-cream-loser and she is nothing short of consistently wonderful throughout her myriad indie roles. From The Lie to Peter and Vandy to Teeth (yup, that’s her!), Weixler is the best thing about every film she’s ever starred in, so if she’s headlining a lo-fi outing about ice cream shilling and deferred dreams, we’re sold. No wonder Eisenberg wants to get into “the good stuff...

Title: Goodbye First Love Director: Mia Hansen-Love Starring: Lola Créton, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Magne-Havard Brekke, Valérie Bonneton, Serge Renko, Ozay Fecht, Max Ricat There’s no one way to tell a love story. Often, romances are recounted on the big screen out of order, to present the happiest of times and the low points without explicitly distinguishing the two. Cinematic examples range from Annie Hall to 500 Days of Summer to Peter and Vandy, and many, many more. That tactic effectively captures what makes the relationship work, the spark and the connection, by citing instances of true delight and weaving them into a grander universe in which these two people exist just [ Read More ]...

Academy Award-nominated actors Annette Bening and Ed Harris, and Academy Award-winner Robin Williams will be joined by Amy Brenneman and Jess Weixler in Arie Posin.s romantic drama Look Of Love. The 11th Tribeca Film Festival is only a few weeks away, and will feature plenty of indie movies vying for audience attention and studio distribution, so credit newcomer director Jay Gammill and Film Market for getting the word out early on their quirky comedy "Free Samples." The film stars Jess Weixler — known most notably for staging a war on penises in Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror-comedy "Teeth" — as a Stanford law-school dropout who gets stuck working in an ice cream truck for a day and is distracted by every goofy weirdo in town while she tries to figure out what to do with her life. Among those distractions is Jason Ritter (who also worked with Weixler in the 2009 romantic drama "Peter and Vandy") and Jesse Eisenberg, who could be Weixler's love interest in the movie (or could just appear in a handful of scenes).

Jonny Lee Miller has landed the lead role of Sherlock Holmes in the CBS drama pilot Elementary.
The potential series is a modern take on the cases of the famed detective, with the Eli Stone star stepping into the literary figure’s shoes, Deadline reports. Another key change: Sherlock now lives in New York City.
Miller, who did a guest arc on Dexter, will next to be seen in the big screen adaptation of the TV series Dark Shadows.

Sometime late this month (or at the beginning of the month of December) the Sundance Film Festival will start unveiling the line-up for their 2012 edition. In an effort to give our readers a heads up on what we'll most likely be seeing at the fest, I've put together yet another predictions list. Caution: I cast a wide circle with a total of 80 predix so I'm bound to get some wrong, but as I've proven in prior years, I'm spot on with at least half the titles you'll find here. One of the most common questions I receive is: how do I know what'll be at the fest and where do I get my information? The answer: I've been going there seven years straight, been privileged to share professional relationships with those in the indie and foreign film sphere, but unless you're one of the programmers led by John Cooper, then...

Jason Ritter got his first taste of acting when he was a hyperactive toddler with a predilection for set-crashing. The overalls-clad youngster was observing the filming of a credits sequence for dad John's hit show "Three's Company" when he got bored, wriggled free from his mother's grasp, and inserted himself into the shot."They were at the zoo filming all of these little vignettes, and they were shooting Joyce DeWitt with a goat," he recalls. "I just wrenched myself out of my mom's grip and went over to pet the goat and essentially ruined what they were trying to do. But I guess Joyce DeWitt laughed so hard at that, and there was, like, a really sweet moment, so they just kept it in there."Ritter bemusedly notes that he apparently developed quite the diva complex about his initial brush with fame. He says with a laugh, "I just saw...

A slow week for DVDs but one with a few notable selections. Perhaps one the most notable is the release (finally) of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (review, amazon), a look at Britain’s most famous (or infamous) inmate.

Almost every year, it seems there are complaints about it being a bad year for women's roles. For some reason, that buzz is especially loud for 2009, as critics are making their year-end lists and finding the women's categories falling short. At which point, I have to feel some empathy for actors like Jess Weixler—who poured her heart and soul into the small indie romance "Peter and Vandy"—and it makes me wonder what more critics could want. Weixler commands the screen in the film, which focuses almost entirely on the two title characters. She's in every scene, playing a range of emotions, from repressed anger to deep infatuation. It's a terrific role and she doesn't miss a beat. Yet her name doesn't appear on any year-end critic's lists. The same can be said of Sophie Okonedo, a previous Oscar nominee for "Hotel Rwanda," who earned raves for her turn...

After success as a playwright, Dipietro is also at Sundance launching a new chapter in his creative career. An off-Broadway hit that enjoyed a four-month run at New York's Paradise Theater Company in 2002, Dipietro adapts his play Peter and Vandy for his first outing as a feature filmmaker. Through a series of flashbacks, twenty-something New Yorkers Peter (Jason Ritter) and Vandy (Jess Weixler) go out on dates, move in together, part ways and reunite with the memories of good times as well as heartbreak behind them. The romance genre is a crowded field but "Peter and Vandy" separates itself from the pack by showing the unhappy moments as much as the good times. Dipietro finds a sofa near the front entrance of the Hollywood Life storefront, one large enough for Weixler, Ritter and himself. I sit atop a nearby case of Heineken beer. We make do.

Alex BurnsNew York; "Henri Gabler"Giving notes to actors is a craft unto itself. It's about efficiency and timing. Knowing how and when to give a note is sometimes more important than the note itself. The best approach varies depending on the actor. Some actors thrive when constructively criticized, others only after they're praised, and the most challenging are those actors who need to be indirectly led to the note so that they feel like they've made a self-discovery. In rehearsal, I find it's always better when notes remain part of a larger creative dialogue about the production, play, or character. I work to establish a relationship of trust and mutual respect between myself and the actor, which allows me to make clear, concise observations that guide the actor and provide him or her with an honest outside perspective. This makes the actor seek my feedback as opposed to me...

Peter and Vandy, a virtual two-hander starring Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler as the titular couple, is the story of a long-term relationship, and all that entails: its ups and downs, from sweet romance to blowout flights over making a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich. Adapted from a 2002 play from writer/director Jay Dipietro, the film also shares a certain trick with another Sundance 2009 alum, 500 Days of Summer, as the story is told out of order. But the two films differ in their approach; 500 Days of Summer shows Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) growing up and figuring out the mysteries of love, whereas the New York-set Peter and Vandy is very much about both characters, the push-and-pull of their relationship, and how goofy architect Peter is changed by spiky art gallerista Vandy and vice versa. If you've been with 'the one,' you may recognize yourself in these characters. Tribeca talked to the adorable Ritter...

I love when I get excited about a film solely for the actors involved. It doesn’t matter what the film is about, as long as actors I like are on screen, I can enjoy it. An Education started out that way, but by the time the credits scrolled upwards, I loved the film as a whole. Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass, Jarhead) and Carey Mulligan (Pride Prejudice, Public Enemies) were the actors I was excited to see. Oh yea, and Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, and Sally Hawkins were thrown in there too. With all that fire power, and a script by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), who wouldn’t want to see this film?
An Education is a period piece in London, 1962 (post-war, pre-Beatles). It’s rare I make a note during the screening to mention the opening credits in my review, but they were really great in this one! Jenny...

When I first heard about this film, I was only presented with the idea that it is a “love story told out of order” or “it’s not a love story, it’s a story about love.” Calm down everyone, I know what you’re thinking. Let me get this out of the way immediately and say that (500) Days of Summer is a much better film than Peter and Vandy. With that said, Peter and Vandy is very good little movie within itself and, at the recommendation of this reviewer, it should be seen if you get the chance to.
Based on the 2002 play of the same name, Peter and Vandy is the brainchild of first time screenwriter/director Jay Dipietro. The film is exactly that; a love story told out of order, in beautiful New York City. It kicks off with Peter (Jason Ritter, W.) and Vandy (Jess Weixler,...

But Dipietro’s variation on a similar theme doesn’t entirely suffer in comparison. Like (500 Days), Dipietro’s film, which he adapted from his 2002 play, rearranges the chronology of the titular relationship so that the breakup and meet-cute bump up against each other. There's a reason most film romances cut off after the guy finally gets the girl, and it's because after that comes all the tough stuff. Jay Dipietro's Peter and Vandy is principally concerned with studying those fraught parts of a relationship, and his time-shifting study of long-term lovers has two independent film darlings that are up to his challenge: Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler.
Ritter's finally overcome his status as "the son of John Ritter" to bloom into an indie leading man in his own right, while Weixler recently burst onto the scene with attention-getting performances in Teeth and Alexander the Last. Both actors have retained their easy chemistry long after shooting Peter and Vandy, which means their joint interview with Movieline was kind of a gigglefest.

Peter and Vandy is touching and insightful, a film that understands what that first whoosh of emotion in a relationship feels like -- and how quickly love can change and vanish. Told out of order, the film -- written and directed by Jay Dipietro, based on his play -- balances funny and sad moments and provides a springboard for strong, multifaceted performances by its two leads, Jess Weixler and Jason Ritter. Like this year's (500) Days of Summer, to which it bears a superficial resemblance, Peter and Vandy, which opens in limited released Friday (10.9.09), shows the beginning and end of a relationship before it gets to the middle section, while telling its story in nonlinear style. That juxtaposition -- which gives the film no true present tense -- takes a few minutes to get used to. But Dipietro makes it...

Those who stuck with me during the monsterous 13-day coverage blitz that was this year's Sundance Film Festival might remember this little love story. Peter and Vandy, from director Jay Dipietro, is a traditional love story told in a very non-traditional way. Like the Sundance darling 500 Days of Summer, it is told in a completely non-linear way. But unlike 500 Days, Peter and Vandy isn't a hipster fantasy -- it's a real love story set in New York City, with two great central performances from Jason Ritter (W.) and Jess Weixler (Teeth). Today I'm happy to present you with an exclusive clip from the film, in which Peter (Ritter) and Vandy (Weixler) have their first date over dinner. For some context, consider this: they've just met and even though she was dating a guy, he asked her out. And as he soon finds out, she wasn't very attached to that guy to begin with. It's...

We have gotten this exclusive clip from Peter And Vandy which opens Friday. Here is the synopsis:
As anyone who’s ever been in love can tell you, it’s a slippery slope from “We’re head over heels in love!” to “We’re fine.” Peter And Vandy takes us through the relationship of a young New York couple – just not in chronological order. Most movie romances end when the relationship is beginning. Peter and Vandy’s love story goes much further than that. The story shifts back and forth in time, whipping between their romantic beginnings and the inevitable struggles that follow. With star-making performances by Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler, Peter And Vandy is a unique take on the exhilaration and frustrations love can bring – a love story in disorder.
I saw this movie at Sundance and just watched it again today. I will tell you that this film is a heartwarming,...

Editor’S Note: This review was original published as part of indieWIRE’s coverage of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. “Peter and Vandy” opens this Friday in theaters. A pointlessly disjointed romantic comedy, Jay DePietro’s “Peter and Vandy” never gets as clever as the filmmaker clearly wishes it could be. DePietro’s script, based on his own play, investigates the ups and downs of young New York lovers Peter (Jason Ritter) and Vandy (Jess …...

In the indie feature Peter and Vandy, Jason Ritter stars as one half of a New York City couple who fall in love, then out of love, and then get back together. A pretty simple premise, except the whole film is told out of chronological order. It shifts back and forth between the good times, the bad, the innocent beginnings and the lessons learned. Huffington Post reporter Zorianna Kit sat down with the 29-year-old actor to talk about the film, the pressures of growing up in a famous family and how the death of his father, sitcom star John Ritter, affected him. Zorianna Kit: What drew you to Peter and Vandy? Jason Ritter: It seemed authentic. Peter's experience of being a man in this world seemed very close to my own experience. Zorianna: How do you identify with...

A press release from Focus Features has announced that shooting has begun in Italy on The American: Anton Corbijn's second film as director (after the brilliant Control), starring George Clooney. It's based on Martin Booth's 2005 novel A Very Private Gentleman: a languid, introspective thriller about an ageing manufacturer of intricate and unusual bespoke weapons, hiding out in the Italian Appenines, posing as a painter of butterflies when his past comes back to haunt him. The screenplay has been adapted by Roland's son Rowan Joffe (co-writer of 28 Weeks Later and the upcoming new version of Brighton Rock). Grant Heslov, who was with Clooney for Goodnight and Good Luck and The Men Who Stare At Goats, is among the producers. Costume and production design is by the Slumdog Millionaire team of Suttirat Larlarb and Mark Digby, and Corbijn's editor and cinematographer from Control, Martin Ruhe and Andrew Hulme, are also on board.

You never really Need a good reason to run a pic of George Clooney about to turn Benny’s World of Liquor into Benny’s World of Blood. Luckily for us, today we do have a good reason. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Afterschool Trailer I have great feelings of amity towards documentaries that pick apart the lives of teens and films that try and get it right...

Srand Releasing has provided Film School Rejects with a few exclusive stills from their upcoming release Peter and Vandy, a romantic drama starring Jess Weixler (Teeth) and Jason Ritter (Swimfan). While at Sundance earlier this year, I had a chance to enjoy and review this film, in which I praised it for its sweet and unique flavor -- and for the solid performances from its two young leads. You can read more in my review here. But if you're not into reading, there are photos below. It looks like the 25th annual Sundance Film Festival is borrowing the late Harvey Milk's famous line: You gotta give 'em hope.
Despite the war-weary, economically ravaged state of the nation and the industry, the Sundance Institute eagerly announced the 2009 competition lineup Wednesday. And while it certainly maintains a somber quotient, the festival roster includes enough fresh takes on old genres (think romance, sci-fi and politics) to satisfy moviegoers and industry players looking for some warmth during the snowy 11-day event.
At least that's how fest organizers Geoffrey Gilmore, Sundance's longtime director, and John Cooper, its programming director, choose to see it.
"What you might have expected is that the festival would be really reflective right now of a very dark time, and it's not really true," said Gilmore, in his 19th year overseeing the fest. "We haven't seen the numbers drop, we haven't seen productions severely impacted yet by these factors,...

Five months after he turned in his "Law & Order" badge, Jesse L. Martin is returning to NBC and Universal Media Studios with a role in "The Philanthropist."
After a lengthy courtship by the network, Martin is in negotiations to co-star on the midseason drama series opposite James Purefoy.
"Philanthropist" centers on Teddy Rist (Purefoy), a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need around the world. Martin would play Philip Maidstone, Teddy's business partner and lifelong friend.
Production on the series -- whose original 13-episode order has been reduced by several segments, as it is not expected to launch until March-April -- is slated to begin shortly. It will be based in London through NBC Universal's international TV production unit, with filming set for South Africa and the Czech Republic.

Law & Order veteran Jesse L. Martin is expected to leave the long-running NBC drama after nine years.
Anthony Anderson is in final negotiations to come on board and fill the void left by Martin's departure. Anderson will play a new detective partnered with Jeremy Sisto's Cyrus Lupo.
Martin will film one more episode of the Wolf Films/Universal Media Studios series, in which his character, Detective Ed Green, will be written off, sources said.
The actor had signed on to do the first 13 episodes this season with an option for more.
Martin, who recently wrapped the feature Peter and Vandy, next is set to portray Marvin Gaye in the biopic Sexual Healing, which is expected to begin production in late April or early May. He is repped by Endeavor and manager Bob McGowan.
"Law & Order" continues Anderson's streak of dramatic roles that includes FX's The Shield, the Oscar-winning The Departed and, most recently, on Fox's gritty cop drama K-Ville, for which he landed an Image Award nomination.
