5 People Who Actually Had Something Interesting to Say About Marilyn Monroe

17 June 2013 3:34 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

HBO is airing a documentary called Love, Marilyn, where celebrities ranging from Lindsay Lohan to Glenn Close (!) revisit the effect that Marilyn Monroe had on them.

Now, like you, I am a great custodian of pop culture history and want to enjoy such a love letter to the past, but something about this project annoys me. I’ve always felt that people aren’t nearly as obsessed with Marilyn Monroe as they are with what they think of Marilyn Monroe. It’s like people want to hear the words, “She was so beautiful, yet tragic, yet unknowable” tumble off their tongues. They love the mouthfeel of it. They think those words describe something, and they love condescendingly showering awe on the listless, tragic actress who still represents some mystical, feminine ideal in entertainment.

Why don’t we ever hear anyone say, “Marilyn takes an amazing photo, but she was hit-or-miss as an actress”? Instead, »

‘The Newsroom’: Aaron Sorkin And Cast Tip Plot Lines For Season 2 During ATAS Event

13 June 2013 11:56 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. (Spoiler Alert! This report outlines news events that are covered in Season 2 of HBO’s The Newsroom.) Creator-showrunner Aaron Sorkin took the wraps off a chunk of the forthcoming second season of his controversial HBO journalism drama tonight as a gift to voting members of the TV Academy, hoping that a little sneak peek will help win them over just as Emmy balloting gets underway. During an event at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Sorkin described that clip of The Newsroom as the first 15 minutes of the new campaign. “When I was wondering which clip to show, our costume designer said, ‘Well, you know nothing ever really happens in the first 15 minutes of everything you write’,” Sorkin quipped. That convinced him that he wouldn’t be leaking too many spoilers in what the packed house saw. However, it did reveal one or two. »

What We're Reading This Weekend: Can't Put 'Em Down Novels

It's one of life's best feelings: stepping into a fictional world so compelling you don't want to leave. Let us know what you think about the novels we're loving - and tell us what you're reading. Gail Nussbaum, Reporter Her Pick: Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler Watching the new Great Gatsby movie, I saw how F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife's decadent experiences on Long Island inspired his masterpiece. But this completely engrossing novel, a reimagining of Zelda's wild-and-crazy life, does what the movie couldn't: I'm casting aside preconceived notions about her and really sympathizing with her struggles. »

'The Newsroom' Season 2 Exclusive Sneak Peek!

13 June 2013 2:06 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"The Newsroom" Season 2 is fast approaching (premieres Sun., July 14 at 10 p.m. Et on HBO) and we know a few of the recent news stories they'll be covering on "News Night," the show-within-the-show on the Aaron Sorkin drama.

Now, The Huffington Post has an exclusive first look at eight new character posters of the "News Night" crew, including Will (Jeff Daniels), MacKenzie (Emily Mortimer), Don (Thomas Sadoski), Jim (John Gallagher, Jr.), Maggie (Alison Pill) and the ever-quotable Charlie (Sam Waterston), as well as the new key art for Season 2 with the ominous tagline: "Together they stand alone."

Every black and white poster features a very telling quote from each character. And while there aren't posters for Jane Fonda's Leona Lansing and her onscreen son, played by "The Mindy Project" star Chris Messina, we're pretty sure their characters will be spewing just as much quick wisdom on Season 2 of "The Newsroom. »

'The Butler': Mariah Carey no-makeup photo shows the singer dressed-down

12 June 2013 12:39 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

In the upcoming summer film, "The Butler," singer Mariah Carey plays a field slave named Hattie Pearl. Obviously, Carey couldn't look her normal, glamorous self if she wanted to be believable in the role, but it's impressive how nice the 43-year-old Mariah Carey actually looks.

Maybe she doesn't need her normal makeup?

From director Lee Daniels, "The Butler" tells the story of Cecil Gaines (a character based on the real-life Eugene Allen), a man who served as the White House butler for 8 Presidents between the years of 1952 and 1986. While the size of Carey's role is not known, she is appearing with a lot of big names. Forest Whitaker plays the central role of Gaines, while Robin Williams (Eisenhower), James Marsden (Kennedy), John Cusack (Nixon), Liev Schrieber (Johnson) and Alan Rickman (Reagan) are among those playing Presidents.

Also starring in the film are Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jane Fonda, Lenny Kravitz, »

Chris Messina Says He Bombed On 'The Newsroom' Season 2 Finale

12 June 2013 3:13 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Chris Messina dropped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and talked about how he may have taken on more than he could handle a little while back. While still filming Season 1 of "The Mindy Project," he also had work on Season 2 of "The Newsroom" and was prepping to direct his first feature film. Something had to give.

Apparently, that something was his appearance on the season finale of "The Newsroom." He said he asked if they could "take it easy" on him with the lines, but this is an Aaron Sorkin show. So he had an entire speech he had to memorize in two days. How did it go?

Messina said he bombed hard. Making it worse, he did it in front of Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston and Marcia Gay Harden. Thankfully, they were very supportive.

Grand Dames Reborn in Primetime

11 June 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Show business traditionally hasn’t been kind to mature actresses, even those with Emmys, Oscars and Tonys tucked under their collective belts.

Often, roles that are offered tend to be less than challenging, making it easy for the public to forget just how good these actresses are until they get cast in meaty guest star spots.

In her first appearance on HBO’s “The Newsroom,” Jane Fonda’s conservative cable news channel CEO Leona Lansing — a hybrid name that melds Leona Helmsley and Sherry Lansing — commandingly prevails in a confrontation with Sam Waterston, underscoring the gravitas Fonda brings to the role.

“I’ve rarely been as challenged by a writer as I’ve been with Aaron Sorkin,” says the Oscar and Emmy-winning actress, who will return to “The Newsroom” next season with a new twist to her character, which she describes as “Rupert Murdoch marinated in a little Ted Turner. »

3rd Annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards Results

11 June 2013 7:56 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Another year, another awards show. I hope you tuned in to the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, because it was a pretty fantastic event. Again, not all of my votes ended up for the winners, and a few of them seem a little questionable to me, but that’s the nature of the beast.

I’m curious where you fit in though. Did the right shows win? Were the right shows even nominated? There were some surprises, like Orphan Black taking home a prize, and there were some obvious choices as well. How’s the mix work for you? By the way, the surprise is only by way of it being a small show with a sci-fi angle, not because it didn’t deserve the win. I mean, that’s a different question…

The Broadcast Television Journalists Association (Btja) tonight announced the winners of the 3rd annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards. »

Does Marcia Gay Harden Outshine Jeff Daniels In “The Newsroom” Season Two Trailer?

10 June 2013 2:35 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

And oh yes: Jane Fonda is still a big part of the proceedings.

Believe it or not, I chronicled the entire first season of The Newsroom last year, even though Aaron Sorkin‘s telejournalism drama disappointed me with its hokey political grandstanding, ridiculous dialogue, and the shocking stupidity of semi-professional tantrum bandit MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer‘s character). On the plus side, I loved Jane Fonda‘s nefarious presence as Leona Lansing and occasionally enjoyed Jeff Daniels‘ huffy rancor as Olbermann-like anchor Will McAvoy.

We’re a month away from the show’s July 14 sophomore season, and guess what? Maybe we’ll tune in, thanks to the presence of two killer guest-stars: Marcia Gay Harden (who was amazing on the second season of Damages, if you remember) and Hamish Linklater (who was recently hair-raising on The Good Wife).

The majority of this trailer is what you expect, but Harden »

Review: The Newsroom

10 June 2013 10:06 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Even at his worst, Aaron Sorkin’s television work is at least trying to say something. He may have crashed with Studio 60 after soaring to heights unimagined with Sports Night and The West Wing, but his first series for premium cable, The Newsroom, hews closer to success than failure regardless of its unevenness.

The series debuted on HBO last summer to mixed reviews and is coming to home video in a handsome box set on Tuesday. Lacking the blood, nudity, and shock value of True Blood and Game of Thrones, it nonetheless makes for compelling watching because these are idealized journalists trying to honor the traditions of journalism they were raised on. The series is set in the recent past, allowing the viewers watch as these reporters cover already familiar events, which lets you invest a little more in the characters and not the story.
