Actor Dominic West turned down an opportunity to work alongside his son, Senan West, for the second time on The Crown. The 54-year-old, who reprised his role as Prince Charles in the sixth and final season of the Netflix series about the late Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, stopped his son from doing the same. Why? Because of the scene where Charles tells 15-year-old Prince William that Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) died.
West forbade Senan from portraying William in ‘The Crown’ Season 6 because he didn’t want to tell ‘a boy his mother has died’
A heartbreaking scene in The Crown Season 6 involves West, as the now-King Charles III, telling his sons, the Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, that their mother, Princess Diana, played by Debicki, died in a 1997 car accident in Paris, France.

It’s the arc that “The Crown” fans have waited for and dreaded: Princess Diana dies in Episode 3 of the Netflix series’ sixth and final season (returning as a spirit for the fourth and final episode of Part 1). While the fourth episode focuses on the aftermath of her death, the first three zero in on their relationship in the weeks leading up to their car crash in the Paris tunnel.
As usual with Peter Morgan’s fact-based drama, some truly wild stuff happens — and some of it is even true! But “The Crown” has always been slightly more interested in emotional truth than in a strict historical record, which means the line between fact and fiction tends to blur. And while many viewers have vivid memories of Diana’s death and the events in its wake, decades of documentaries, biopics, books, and conspiracy theories have made what led up to it hazy.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “The Crown” Season 6, Part 1.]
When the ghost of Diana, Princess of Wales, first appears, she says, “Ta-da!”
Narratively speaking, her cheeky apparition arrives in response to Charles (Dominic West) talking to himself. He’s just left Paris after examining her body — a sight spared the viewer, who’s just witnessed Mohamed Al-Fayed (Salim Daw) weep over his son’s corpse — and, on the plane ride back to England, he’s awestruck by his ex-wife’s sway over the world, even in death. “Paris,” he says. “One of the busiest cities in the world, and you brought it to a standstill.” And then there she is. No longer silent and still on a surgical table, but sitting right across from the father of her children. “Ta-da!” she says, as if Charles, let alone any of “The Crown’s” viewers, are in the mood for a magic trick.

Prince Harry’s memorable passage in Spare about his frostbitten “nether regions” and effort to heal them by applying a cream used by Princess Diana isn’t impacting The Crown Season 6. The makeup artist for the Netflix original series has revealed the cream that reminded the Duke of Sussex of his late mother didn’t make its way into actor Elizabeth Debicki’s Diana makeup bag for the final season.
Harry used Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream on his frostbitten ‘nether regions’ after visiting the North Pole in 2011
Spare included some searing passages about Prince William and major revelations, but also in Harry’s memoir were some lighter moments. Perhaps the most laughable among them came when the now-39-year-old recalled experiencing an unfortunate case of frostbite after trekking to the North Pole.

Netflix gathered The Crown’s new stars – Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Jonathan Pryce, and Dominic West – for a press conference in support of season five. The new season arrives just two months after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and the series’ Queen, Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton, shared her feelings about the thousands of people who stood in line to pay their respects to the longest-reigning monarch in British history.
“I think they felt such huge respect for someone who kept her promise. She just kept her promise and she did the job,” said Staunton. “It amazed me, people’s response to her. I just thought, ‘God, you really admired this woman.’ People say ‘love’ – I think they admired (her). Here we are celebrating a woman who, with her own face – you know...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Part 1 finale of the first season of HBO’s “The Nevers.”)
The first half of the debut season of the Joss Whedon-created HBO series “The Nevers” came to a close Sunday with an episode that gave viewers answers to some of the biggest questions they’ve been asking about Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), Penance Adair (Ann Skelly) and their “mission” for the Touched society in Victorian London. But with so much information given in just an hour of television, TheWrap needed Donnelly and Skelly’s help to unpack it all.
See below for our Q&a with “The Nevers” stars Donnelly and Skelly about the finale’s big reveals, including Amalia’s origins as “Stripe” (a soldier from the future played by Claudia Black), the nature of her relationship with the Galanthi, what she did to betray Sarah, and her decision to tell Penance her real,...

One trend in the Oscar race this year seems to be films that are about recent events. This, of course, is not a new fad in cinema as hot-button topics have always lent themselves to being a solid jumping-off point for storytelling on the big screen. A few of the films grabbing attention this time around — Sully and Patriots Day for best picture as well as a few others from various categories — tackle some of the biggest recent events and narratives in recent memory.
Sully, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, tells the story of Chesley Sullenberger and the Miracle on the Hudson involving Us Airways Flight 1549 from January 15, 2009. This real-life event centers around a flight from New York City’s Laguardia Airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport was forced to land in the...

Much as the horror genre is deeply rooted in the evolving culture that creates it, NBC‘s latest “action-drama,” American Odyssey, builds itself from the conspiracy fears that are now equally laughed off and assumed to be obviously true.

Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of Navy Seal Chris Kyle in Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper has been garnering Oscar buzz since the film premiered at AFI Fest. With The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy saying, “nothing the actor has done before suggests the dramatic assuredness he brings to his way of detailing Kyle’s self-control, confidence, coolness, genuine concern for his comrades-in-arms, compulsion to serve his country and ultimate realization that enough is enough, even of the thing he loves most, which is war,” Cooper may earn his third consecutive Oscar nomination this year. This would follow behind his best actor nomination last year for Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and this year’s nomination for his supporting role in American Hustle (2013).
The last male actor to accomplish this feat was Russell Crowe, who scored three nominations from 2000 to 2002. He won in 2001 for his lead role in Gladiator.

Check out the new poster for Trouble With The Curve. What’s everyone think? As a fan of sports-themed films, I really like the stature of the baseball park towering in the background of the poster. Add to it that the timing of the film’s release is perfect for the waning days of the 2012 Mlb regular season.
The drama stars Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Robert Patrick, Matthew Lillard, Scott Eastwood, Joe Massingill and will be in theaters September 21.

Chicago – With all due respect to Damián Bichir, George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt, I believe that the three best lead performances by an actor in 2011 were entirely overlooked by the Academy. None of the five Oscar nominees quite managed to top Michael Shannon in “Take Shelter,” Michael Fassbender in “Shame” or Leonardo DiCaprio in “J. Edgar.”
While I’ll admit that “J. Edgar” is wildly inferior to the aforementioned titles, there’s no denying the level of ambition in DiCaprio’s stunningly immersive portrayal of the titular FBI director. This picture marks the first time DiCaprio’s distractingly boyish features have entirely vanished within the hardened exterior of an embittered adult whose youth got lost in the shuffle. Though his accent initially sounds a bit labored, DiCaprio quickly eases into the uncomfortable skin of a man who projected his inner shame onto everyone he deemed a threat.

Best Actor – Drama likely nominees: Leonardo DiCaprio for the title role in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, Brad Pitt for Moneyball, Brad Pitt again for The Tree of Life, Michael Fassbender for Shame, and Ryan Gosling for Drive.
The top runners-up are Michael Shannon for Take Shelter, Woody Harrelson for Rampart, George Clooney for The Ides of March, and Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Demián Bichir was a SAG Awards surprise nominee for his performance as an undocumented immigrant in Chris Weitz's A Better Life, but we don't really expect Bichir will be as lucky with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members.
Maybe if A Better Life had co-starred Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart, two of the leads in Weitz's The Twilight Saga: New Moon. As a starless small movie...

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar Adam Sandler in Drag/Jack And Jill Below Sandler Box-Office Average; Tower Heist Down 45% At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart this weekend, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar raked in $11.47 million — at the very lower end of expectations — as per studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The J. Edgar Hoover biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover, Armie Hammer as his associate and intimate companion Clyde Tolson, and Naomi Watts as FBI secretary Helen Gandy averaged an acceptable — though not very promising — $6,005 at 1,910 locations. As mentioned in a couple of previous posts, comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Oscar-nominated Milk, which were possible on Wednesday, are impossible to make at this stage. Written by J. Edgar's Dustin Lance Black, the 2008 drama starring Sean Penn as gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk never played at more than 900 North American sites — and that expansion took place around Oscar time,...

Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar Henry Cavill/Tarsem Singh Immortals May Reach $38m: Box Office At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart on Friday, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar raked in $4.25 million as per Box Office Mojo. If the J. Edgar Hoover biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, and Naomi Watts reaches $12 million for the weekend, that means an acceptable — though not very promising — $6,312 average at 1,901 locations. Comparisons to Gus Van Sant's Milk, which were possible on Wednesday, become trickier at this stage. Written by J. Edgar's Dustin Lance Black, the 2008 drama starring Sean Penn as the gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk never played at more than 900 North American locations — and that expansion took place around Oscar time, more than two months after the film's late November debut. Made for a reported $20m, Milk went on to gross only $31.84m at the domestic box office; J. Edgar...

Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, Judi Dench as Anne Marie Hoover, J. Edgar Jack And Jill/Adam Sandler in Drag: Second-Lowest-Grossing Sandler Comedy in Past Five Years? According to unproven — and quite possibly unfounded — rumors, FBI emperor J. Edgar Hoover enjoyed wearing some nice-fitting dresses every now and then. Ironically, this weekend the all-powerful Hoover will surely be beaten at the Us/Canada box office by another cross-dresser: Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill. How the mighty have fallen. At no. 5 on the domestic box-office chart, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar will likely rake in $10-$12 million for the weekend after grossing $3.5-$4 million on Friday. Even if the Hoover biopic reaches $12 million, that means an acceptable — though hardly very promising — $6,312 average at 1,901 locations. (Deadline has $13 million for the weekend, but that could be a typo, unless Warner Bros. is expecting the adult-oriented J. Edgar...

Chicago – Much of history is determined by the petty quirks and strange psychosis of “great leaders.” J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director for 48 years, worked hard to hide his very nature by squelching the nature of others – enemies, friends and perceived enemies. Leonardo DiCaprio is Hoover in “J. Edgar.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is director Clint Eastwood’s history of J. Edgar Hoover the man, and Hoover as the director of a shadow government of the United States through the FBI. Using U.S. tax dollars, Hoover built an impenetrable wall of power, based on his concept of law and order, with no repercussions toward himself, despite a closeted life of vague sexuality. Leonardo DiCaprio captures all the duality, hypocrisy and fear that Hoover possessed, in a performance that unabashedly communicates the multi-faceted megalomaniac.
The film begins with an older J. Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio, in all ages), around the time of the John F. Kennedy administration.

Okay, so what’s everyone think? Will the film will be as great as the trailer or just another by-the-numbers biopic? I guess it all depends on what aspects of Hoover’s career are focused on. They’re obviously hitting on the race riots, the gangsters, having Kennedy under his thumb, but how deep will it delve into him being a Mama’s boy versus being head of the G-Men.
I already love cinematographer Tom Stern’s hazy interior shots. He’s previously worked with Eastwood on Invictus, Gran Torino, Hereafter, Million Dollar Baby,...

Chicago – Director Clint Eastwood has given up on subtlety, choosing instead to tell old-fashioned, direct stories with as much technical skill and dramatic competency as possible. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the legendary director’s “Invictus,” but it’s also not nearly as memorable or thrilling as it could have or, given the true story that it tells, should have been.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Personally, I find Eastwood the most interesting when he deals in gray moral situations like the ones at the core of “Mystic River,” “Unforgiven” or “Million Dollar Baby”. Lately, with films like “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Changeling,” “Gran Torino,” and, now, “Invictus,” there is no gray. He seems to have lost any interest at all in striking a subtle chord. Every single character development and plot turn is telegraphed in the previews and merely underlined by the film itself. It’s old-fashioned cinema and, in this case,...

There was still no real reason—other than commercial concerns so as to squeeze a few more bucks out of the property—to redo The Prisoner, that classic 1960s enigma of a TV series starring Secret Agent’s Patrick McGoohan as a man trapped in the mysterious (yet picturesque) locale known as the Village.
Nonetheless, it was done—and the six-hour mini-series reincarnation is now airing on AMC, as scripted by executive producer Bill Gallagher and directed by Nick Hurran. The first two chapters (“Arrival,” “Harmony”) were reviewed here . This installment discusses, briefly (and Without ruining anything should you still not have seen them), last night’s episodes (“Anvil,” “Darling”). The final two entries (“Schizoid,” “Checkmate”) debut Tuesday on AMC, beginning at 8 p.m. They’ll be reviewed later so as to freely discuss any other spoilers.

Some 40 years ago, I sat in the living room with my Dad watching a new and wondrous TV series from Great Britain. Secret Agent’s Patrick McGoohan starred. It was, naturally, The Prisoner. And to say it was a mystery, an enigma and a riddle all twisted Möbius strip-style into one fine strangeness was an understatement. Our hero, known only as Number Six, was trapped in an oddly picturesque enclave known as the Village, a bizarre place lorded over by an ever-changing Number Two (played by Leo McKern more than once). Six’s primary goal was to escape this rabbithole, but, alas, whenever he (almost) did, he would be tracked down by relentless giant balloons and recaptured, sent back once more to the Village as if all was well with the world.

After last year's misanthropic manifesto, Gran Torino, the last thing you'd expect from Clint Eastwood is a movie soaked in the milk of human goodness. But that's just what he's done with Invictus, his new movie based on the true story about how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) recruited the captain of the South African rugby team (Matt Damon) to integrate the team and unite the country. And judging by the lump I got in my throat watching the trailer, maybe the filmmaker has even mastered the art of good schmaltz. This thing plays like a challenge to even the crustiest cynics.
