Exclusive: The 1/52 Project, a new financial grant program founded by Tony Award-winning set designer Beowulf Boritt, has selected the first seven early-career designer recipients to benefit from 100,000 in grants. Each of the inaugural recipients will receive grants up to 15,000, with applicants chosen based on talent, creativity, innovation, and potential for future excellence in the professional theatrical field.
The 2022 recipients are Brittany Bland, projection designer; Everett Elton Bradman, sound designer; Stefania Bulbarella, projection designer; Jessica Alexandra Cancino, set designer; Frank Cazares, costume designer; Jordan McCree, sound designer; and Jingyi Johanna Pan, costume designer.
“I know I am extraordinarily lucky to be able to make a living as a theatre designer, much less to have the opportunity to do it on Broadway,” said Boritt. “Part of that luck was being born a middle-class white boy. Exclusive: The upcoming pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical in Boston has cast Tony Award nominees Mark Jacoby and Robyn Hurder, and Linda Powell to its cast, producers said today.
Jacoby will play the musical icon as he is now, while the previously announced Will Swenson will portray Diamond as a young man. Jacoby’s casting is the first indication that A Beautiful Noise will include two actors portraying the singer-songwriter.
“Neil Diamond has had a myriad of career highs which are a joy to celebrate, but sometimes as artists we look back and only see the mistakes, the roads not taken, the failures, and the aftermath success can leave behind,” said director Michael Mayer in a statement. “Anthony McCarten’s book for A Beautiful Noise beautifully weaves these two perspectives together: the highs and the lows, looking forward and looking back, the artist...

Architecture and real-life period influences were infused into many Emmy-nominated series’ sets. Here a few that stood out.
“The Oscars” (ABC)
Nominated For Variety Special (Live) Production Design
Production designer David Rockwell turned to previous Oscar ceremonies for inspiration for the 93rd annual event last April. He took cues from Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, site of the first Oscars, to create the aesthetic for this year’s setting, Union Station.
“We conceived a room within a room that made circulation intuitive and completely enveloped the audience,” he says. “These early ceremonies were all formal seated dinners for a very select group of people: the nominees and their guests. This year, given how the pandemic has impacted our ability to gather, we tried to recapture that same sense of intimacy and community.” His main challenge was the building itself. “Nothing could be affixed or installed inside the train station, given its landmark status.

The 93rd Academy Awards had no host, no masks, no Zoom, and almost no audience.
There’s a lot of things the Oscars weren’t tonight, but lackluster thankfully wasn’t one of them overall.
Hollywood’s biggest night wasn’t exactly the movie unto itself that producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh promised. However, no one took that very seriously, and the resulting relatively fast-paced and deeply personal ceremony actually might have been something more vital – a true Hollywood reinvigoration.
Which is something ABC, AMPAS and the industry itself needed after years of the Academy Awards being on either autopilot or the small-screen equivalent of a ragged hamster wheel at best. The big swing Academy Awards will still likely be the least-watched Oscars ever, or one of the least watched at the very least, which is a real shame.

Slowly but surely, first-time Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins are filling in the gaps on the looming Oscar show. Details have been coming thick and fast in the past week as plans solidified, and nominees and their guests make their travel arrangements for the two-month-delayed Academy Awards (televised live on April 25 on ABC at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide). Oscars 2021 could not have been accomplished without the delay, the producers said at last Saturday’s press conference, from safety concerns to increased access to vaccinations.
Their goal: to stage a Zoom-less affair packed (at a safe distance) with as many live human nominees and presenters (each allowed one guest) as possible, the producers reiterated. “This is the walking definition of trying to build an airplane while it’s in the air,” said Soderbergh.

Oscar show producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher, and Steven Soderbergh this morning spelled out how Covid-19 protocols would be integrated into the April 25th broadcast, and assured they are taking every measure to make sure all nominees and participants are safe throughout the three-hour ceremony.
Certainly with Soderbergh and Sher having also produced the prescient 2011 film, Contagion, they would seem to have a leg up on how to do it for the Academy Awards as well.
“We’ve had a lot of practice. This industry was at the forefront of creating protocol to get people back to work safely. It started with The Safe Way Forward last June (which Soderbergh spearheaded) and then was formalized in a negotiation with the Producers in September. I am in the middle of shooting my second film during Covid. We know how to approach situations like this,” said Soderbergh. “It is incredibly labor intensive,...

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
This weekend is crunch time. Final balloting for the 93rd annual Academy Awards began Thursday, and it is likely that a majority of those ballots will have been filled out and submitted by the time we get to Monday. Technically, voters have until 5 p.m. Pt Tuesday to turn them in, and as usual there will be a lot of stragglers who wait until the last minute, a reason why some contenders still with a fighting chance will be campaigning with advertising on TV and websites like this one right up until the last moment. And there are a lot of tight races where those voters will have some tough choices. Before that happens, we still have a few precursor awards shows to go including tonight’s Annies, Saturday’s Ace Eddies and Sunday’s ASC cinematographer ceremonies, all of them virtual.

Michael Moore will take aim at Donald Trump once again, this time on the Broadway stage. The filmmaker and author will star in a one-man show titled “The Terms of Surrender,” which will mark his debut on the New York stage. “Can a Broadway show bring down a sitting president?” reads the preliminary poster for the show, which will be directed by Michael Mayer, the Tony-winning director behind “Spring Awakening” and the “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” revival. In an interview with The New York Times, Moore described the play as “a very developed piece of entertainment for people who like to think.” He added, “It’s a humorous play about a country that’s just elected a madman — I mean, there’s really no other way to put it.”

It looks like Hugh Jackman won’t be making magic on Broadway any time soon.
The Tony-winner and Oscar nominee is no longer attached to star as the famed magician in the upcoming musical Houdini, written by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and David Ives (Venus in Fur). Though no official production had been announced yet, Jackman confirmed his involvement in the show after years of speculation while Aaron Sorkin and Danny Elfman were still on board as the show’s creative team. Now, it seems Wolverine might be a little too busy to try and escape from a straight jacket upside down.

The days of moving to L.A. for film and TV work are over, with production of television and film in New York at an all-time high. The number of episodic series filming—or that have already wrapped—in New York has quadrupled for the current television season compared to just over a decade ago. As the demand for shooting in New York continues to rise, Kaufman Astoria Studios responded to its customers’ needs with its most recent addition to the Queens facility: a block-long backlot. While Kaufman Astoria officially unveiled the space Dec. 3, studio president Hal Rosenbluth said that the construction of a backlot was always in the plan for this space. “If you’re going to believe you’re a real studio, there was this idea that you would have a backlot and you would pull up to this nice big gate, like you would at Paramount, and ask to be admitted,...

New York — The Cyndi Lauper-scored "Kinky Boots" has earned a leading 13 Tony Award nominations, with the British import "Matilda: The Musical" close behind with 12. Tom Hanks, making his Broadway debut, earned a nod as leading man in a play.
"Kinky Boots" is based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in fetish footwear. Lauper's songs and a story by Harvey Fierstein have made it a crowd-pleaser.
"I walked my dog early this morning so I'd be back in time to listen to the announcement. It's so great. It's so great. I'm done crying a little bit. But I'm still thrilled and a little stunned," Lauper said.
The haul did not match the record number of nominations for a musical, which is 15, set by "The Producers" in 2001 and "Billy Elliot" in 2009. "The Book of Mormon" nabbed 14 Tony nods in 2011.

Exclusive: Aaron Sorkin has dropped out of the Broadway production of Houdini, on which he was to make his librettist debut for a musical slated to star Hugh Jackman as the famous magician. Sorkin has put a lot of work into the musical, but had to drop out because of scheduling. He had to go back and write the second season of his HBO series creation The Newsroom, which will be broadcast in the summer. He’s also hard at work adapting the Walter Isaacson book Steve Jobs for a feature film for Sony Pictures on the Apple genius. That left him pressed to have enough time to finish the musical in time for the producer’s plan to open on Broadway during the 2013-2014 season. Sorkin’s reps are in conversations with the Houdini producers for them to continue developing the musical utilizing Sorkin’s initial concepts and other materials.
