Exclusive: Dekanalog has picked up Streetwise, Anatolian Leopard and Fugue, three buzzy international films.
The outfit, which launched in 2020 to focus on shopping international films to U.S. audiences, has taken global rights to the trio and plans to launch them within the calendar year.
Cannes favourite Streetwise is a Chinese film from Jiazuo Na and follows Dongzi, a small-town debt collector trying to pay off his sick father’s hospital bill.
Anatolian Leopard charts the relationship between a lonely manager and neglected female officer who form an unlikely bond at Turkey’s oldest zoo, involving themselves in an absurd charade that spins out of control, while Agnieszka Smoczynska’s Fugue tells of a mother who suffers memory loss and returns to her family looking familiar but behaving like a stranger.
The trio have all performed well with critics.

Dekanalog, a new theatrical and digital distribution company, has acquired all U.S. rights to Chloé Mazlo’s feature debut “Skies of Lebanon” with Alba Rohrwacher (“Happy as Lazarro”).
Rpresented in international markets by Charades, “Skies of Lebanon” received Cannes’ Critics’ Week label in 2020, and is being released in French theaters on Wednesday (June 30) by Ad Vitam. Moby Dick Films produced the movie.
Set in the 1950’s, the film follows Alice, a young woman who leaves her native Swiss mountains for the sunny, vibrant shores of Beirut. Alice quickly fits in among Joseph’s relatives, but the civil war threatens their bliss.
Rohrwacher stars in the film opposite writer-turned-actor Wajdi Mouawad (“Incendies”). Mazlo previously directed the Cesar-winning short film “Les petits cailloux” in 2015.

Easy Rider terrifies twenty confused studio executives because they don’t understand it. Hoping to keep their jobs, they rush to hire more longhairs to make movies ‘the kids’ will see. Ex- UCLA film student B.L. Norton parlayed his way into writing and directing on the streets of Los Angeles, with new stars Gene Hackman and Karen Black, and singer-songwriter of the year Kris Kristofferson in his first starring role as a musician forced to deal marijuana by a corrupt cop. A time travel trip back to the City of the Angels circa 1971, it’s realistic and honest, and Kristofferson turns out to have terrific camera presence.

Willem Dafoe in The Loveless will be available on Blu-ray July 9th From Arrow Video
“They Re Going Nowhere… Fast!”
The United States, late 1950s. A time of generational conflict, of immense social change, of bold fashions and toe-tapping music just some of the elements that collide in thrilling fashion in The Loveless, the feature debut of both its star, Willem Dafoe (To Live and Die in La), and its directors, Monty Montgomery and future Academy Award®-winner* Kathryn Bigelow.
A motorcycle gang roars into a small southern town en route to the Daytona races, unnerving and angering the locals with their standoffish attitude and disrespect for social niceties. When one of their number, the charismatic Vance (Dafoe), hooks up with sportscar-driving Telena, he incurs the wrath of the girl s father, setting the gang on a collision course with the rest of the town as simmering tensions boil over into violent retribution.

Arrow Video resurrects Jack Hill’s first solo directorial effort, Spider Baby (1967) for lovers of cult oddities. Prior to becoming a lynchpin in the Blaxploitation film movement with his signature Pam Grier titles such as Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974), Hill knocked around as co-director on B-grade horror films, including Roger Corman and Stephanie Rothman projects. Unfortunately, this strange little number didn’t see release for several years due to its producers getting tied up in bankruptcy. Originally titled “Cannibal Orgy,” the theatrical release kept the extended title of Or the Maddest Story Ever Told (several other venues played it under the title The Liver Eaters). Not nearly gritty or violent enough to warrant such provocative monikers, its eventual name remains the most befitting. Featuring horror alum Lon Chaney Jr. and an eerie early role for (an almost unrecognizable) Sid Haig, Hill was obviously inspired at arming popular genre motifs with teeth.

The movies are filled with familiar faces with seemingly forgettable names. They’ll never see themselves on a marquee or win an Oscar, but people like Bob Gunton, Paul Gleason, and Brion James always make their brief moments onscreen count. Their presence often raises the level of a film, if even for a few minutes, but while most viewers would agree with the sentiment the actors go unsung in the general consciousness. Dick Miller is another one of those guys. He’s been in over 200 films, and while a couple of them saw him in a major or even leading role the vast majority found him simply as the clerk, the man behind the counter, the cop, the [insert generic occupation here] guy. If you’ve seen a Joe Dante movie then you’ve seen Miller in action, and the odds are almost as good if you’ve ever seen a Roger Corman film. Miller...

If you’re a fan of Roger Corman or Joe Dante then you’re probably also a fan of Dick Miller, who is something of a fixture in both their filmographies.
And even if you’re not, there’s a very good chance you’re at least familiar with his face, given that the veteran character actor has appeared in more than 150 films and TV shows, including The Terminator, both Gremlins movies, and Star Trek: Next Generation.
On Friday night, a new documentary about Miller – called, appropriately enough, That Guy Dick Miller — will receive its world premiere at SXSW.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

American Grindhouse – Elijah Drenner’s informative, jam-packed documentary about exploitation cinema — came out on DVD last week. It’s positively brimming with cool stories and peeks at some truly mind-bending films. Definitely worth a look.

In an appropriately grindhouse running time of 80 minutes it’s impossible to be the definitive take on this broad psychotronic subject, but American Grindhouse packs a lot of sleazy info into its compact running time. Some of the worthy interviewees are folks not often asked to talk about about their work in exploitation films and there are transgressive clips and abbreviated trailer blurbs galore. Two titles, three chances to win.
Let it be known that the gentlemen at Severin Films aren’t just behind classy, high-caliber, prestigious releases like Richard Rush’s The Stunt Man. They’re also a little insane (and if you’re in La and make it to The Cinefamily for the Everything is Festival, Evan Husney of Severin promises to inflict that insanity upon you with his mash-up “Brain Bludgeon”).
Today, for example, Severin Films are dropping some new titles, including two of the weirdest, most shocking, exploitative “kid” movies that you’ll find anywhere.
First up is Ted Post’s The Baby, a supremely odd looking title about which I don’t even know what to say. Just look at the trailer:
That’s weird. And it got a PG rating! As American Grindhouse director Elijah Drenner says:
…describing The Baby as ‘sleazy’ is too simple, not to mention inaccurate.

Ever since Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino gave us Grindhouse back in 2007, the term has been tossed around by fans to refer to a type of movie experience that most of us just never had the chance to partake in. Since then the gritty style and intentionally shoddy filmwork have become a sort of asthetic, alluding to a type of picture that never really existed. Sure, we all know what a grindhouse movie looks like today, sort of, but I’ll be honest, I never really knew where the term came from. For me, Grinhouse movies were just films that played on 42nd Street in New York. That was as much as I knew.

Every weekend, I like to dig up a free movie for our readers to watch, something that they may have missed during their numerous cinematic adventures. Most of them tend to be pretty cheesy and/or fairly obscure, which is why I thought Elijah Drenner’s “American Grindhouse” seemed like the perfect candidate for inclusion. The film explores the history of the grindhouse scene, and contains several interesting interviews with people who thrived in the culture. Anyone with even a passing interest in cinema will probably get a kick out of this one, particularly if your taste in cinema tends to lean towards the bizarre. Via Hulu...

The history, trajectory and influence upon mainstream media of the exploitation film circuit is lovingly chronicled in Elijah Drenner‘s fun romp American Grindhouse. However, like the salacious marketing gimmicks and hucksterism that drew in audiences to tawdry theaters that this documentary gleefully covers, could equally apply to the way Drenner has structured his film. (Note: Film is 100% Nsfw.)
American Grindhouse starts off with a bang with aficionados of cinema’s dark underbelly, like directors John Landis, Joe Dante and William Lustig, exuberantly describing the seedy neighborhoods of Hollywood Boulevard and Times Square of the ’70s where one could go see gore, mayhem and nudity for cheap on the big screen.

[Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]
Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.
I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.
I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

The 2nd annual Oakland Underground Film Festival, which will run Sept. 23-25, has a definite theme this year. And that theme is funk! The all-documentary festival features profiles of music professors, avant-garde musicians, funky music histories, female Bolivian wrestlers and the history of sleazy cinema.
The hit underground documentary American Grindhouse by Elijah Drenner will be making yet another stop in Oakland. A chronicle of exploitation cinema from the ’20s to the ’70s, the film has interviews with filmmakers such as John Landis, Joe Dante and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
Other documentaries in the lineup are Mark Landsman’s Thunder Soul, about an inspirational music teacher; Stascha Bader’s Jamaican music history Rocksteady: Roots of Reggae; plus, a profile of female Bolivian wrestler Carmen Rose the Champion, Mamachas Del Ring directed by Betty M. Park.
The full film lineup is below. Plus, there will be dance contests, parties and more. For...

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...

Paris -- Annette Bening, Terry Gilliam and Gregg Araki will add star and stripe power to the 36th annual Deauville American Film Festival, organizers said Monday.
Bening, Gilliam and Araki will be in the spotlight when the seaside fest pays homage to their respective careers complete with screenings of their older and more recent films. Araki's latest feature "Kaboom" will screen as part of "Generation Araki: A look at the filmmaker's work" and Lisa Cholodenko's recent U.S. summer release "The Kids are All Right" starring Bening alongside Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo will host its French premiere.
This year's festival won't be lacking for other star power – on screen at least.
High-profile premieres will include Richard Levine's "Every Day" starring Live Schreiber, Helen Hunt and Eddie Izzard; Aaron Schneider's "Get Low" with Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray; Don Roos' "Love and other Possible...

Grindhouse. A term as old as cinema (though it wasn’t always referred to as that) that has, for a large part of its history, existed on the fringes. For some, it was a common form of entertainment but for many others, it was something that existed outside of our regular watching habits, heard and perhaps even talked about but rarely explored.
Over the decades, grindhouse has taken on different incarnations, changing and adapting to the times, the culture and the audience and Elijah Drenner’s first full length feature documentary American Grindhouse does a great job of walking the uninitiated through the history of the genre (though it’s much more than that) from the early days of Thomas Edison’s invention of the camera to the old burlesque...
