Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Shift: Joe Drake Stepping Down As Chair, Hands Reins To Adam Fogelson
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake is exiting the company, and handing over executive duties and title to Motion Picture Group Vice Chair Adam Fogelson.
This was a move initiated by Drake who’ll be working with Fogelson over the coming months to transition him to the Chair role.
The corporate segue follows Lionsgate’s reboot of the Hunger Games franchise with the Q4 holiday prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which has grossed over $340M global box office to date.
Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after having success with Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. Other highlights during his current run of the Motion Picture Group include multi-award-winning Knives Out ($312M global B.O.), the last two John Wick movies ($766M+ global B.O.), and the latest installment in the Saw franchise ($111M global box). Last year “Succession” broke the record for the most acting nominations in a single year at the Emmys with 14, and it tied that tally in its final season in 2023. Like last year there are three women from the show in the Best Drama Guest Actress category, one of whom is a perennial favorite and a previous winner for the HBO satirical drama: Cherry Jones for her role as Nan Pierce.

Jones began her career as a founding member of the American Repertory Theater in 1980 and has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, having performed in distinguished plays such as “Stepping Out,” “Our Country’s Good,” “Angels in America,” “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” and “The Glass Menagerie” and winning Tony Awards for Best Actress for “The Heiress” and “Doubt.” On screen, she has had an active...

Hollywood star Julia Roberts, who is known for ‘Erin Brockovich’, ‘Notting Hill’, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and others, rarely shares pictures of her twins, Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter.
However, she chose to publicly celebrate their 19th birthday, and she has shared the reason behind the same, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“It is something to be celebrated, and I know Instagram is a place where people like to share happy things,” Roberts, 56, told Extra. “I love them so much and I really did just happen to come upon this cute picture (sic)”, the actress added. “It allows me to share something as a proud parent of them without infringing on their privacy at all (sic).”
On November 28, the ‘Erin Brockovich’ Oscar winner shared an old photo of Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter as infants, sitting in her lap. “There are no words for the joy, the fun, the wild rumpus of life together”, she captioned the shot.

Emmy-and-Golden Globe winning actor. Oscar-nominated producer. Director. Writer. In his 50 years in the industry, Danny DeVito has worn many hats, becoming one of the most successful and popular entertainers of his generation.
Daniel Michael DeVito, Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in New Jersey, with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Also known as Fairbank’s disease, this rare genetic disorder affects bone growth and contributed to his short stature. This has not hindered his successes, beginning with his training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and early work in the theater.
In 1975, DeVito successfully reprised his off-Broadway role in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” in the film version, and soon found success as Louie DePalma in the television sitcom “Taxi,” for which he received four Primetime Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations, winning the Emmy in 1978 and the Globe in 1980. Magic Mike’s Last Dance is a movie directed by Steven Soderbergh starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek.
Good old Mike returns with his sculpted abs from the hand of the director everyone loves for this farewell, not very spectacular cinematographically, but fun and entertaining.
Storyline
Mike works as a waiter until a rich woman takes him to London to, together, form a group of male strippers.
Movie Review Magic Mike’s Last Dance
Correct, very correct and knowing that there is a certain Soderbergh in charge of the project, but as not everything can be done by the good director and “one-man band”, he has his always good partners who accompany him: this time, same as always, Channing Tatum, a very good actor for comedy, and Salma Hayek, who does a bit of everything and does everything well.

With the 80th Golden Globe Awards coming up Tuesday, a collection of showbiz veterans are poised to potentially receive some Golden Globes hardware after a lengthy time out of the winner’s circle — in a handful of cases, several decades.
Since it always helps to have a scorecard, here is yours:
Henry Winkler (nominated as Best TV Comedy/Drama Supporting Actor for “Barry”): He has seven Golden Globe nominations to his credit and won twice, but the last time was in 1978 for “Happy Days.” The 45-year victory drought is historic enough, but we also know he would be the first actor ever to win comedy lead and supporting trophies. Steve Martin (Best TV Comedy Actor for “Only Murders in the Building”): Martin has seven Globes noms to his credit but never won, dating back to the film “Pennies from Heaven” in 1982 — a mere 41 years ago. Some might say he’s a tad overdue.

Cinematographer Ed Lachman was meant to reunite with his frequent collaborator and director Todd Haynes on “May December,” starring Natalie Portman, but he broke his hip. “I just came home from Chile doing a film with Pablo Larrain, and I unfortunately, I broke my hip.” Lachman says.
Instead of joining Haynes and Portman in Savannah, Ga., where the film is currently in production, Lachman is doing well and recovering in Mallorca. He spoke with Variety about his recent projects and the surge of shooting on film after being honored at the recent Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.
The festival presented Lachman with its inaugural Evolution Cinematography Icon Award recognizing his work over four decades across films such as “Carol,” “Far From Heaven” and “Erin Brockovich.”

Julia Roberts was able to break the glass ceiling for A-list female movie stars only in 2000 when she commanded 20 million for the biographical legal drama ‘Erin Brockovich’, reports ‘Variety’. Until then, no woman actor had been getting as much pay as their male counterparts such as Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks, who ruled the 1990s box office alongside Roberts.
At Saturday’s A+E Networks and History Channel’s History Talks in Washington D.C., moderator Gayle King asked Roberts about the negotiation tactics she employed to gain equal pay.
“I didn’t feel so boxish about it, but I felt like, ‘Come on’,” Roberts said. “Which is my nature — not to be all up-in-arms about something, but to say, ‘Let’s get real. Let’s be fair’.”
Roberts acknowledged, according to ‘Variety’, that she’d earned her paycheck, having carried such culture-defining hits as ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding...

Preparing for an upcoming flight isn’t just limited to packing your clothes and toiletries — have you thought about how you’re going to keep yourself entertained? The idealist in all of us might say we’re gonna read that book we’ve been putting off, but depending on the length of your flight, that may be easier said than done. If it’s on the longer side, it can be easy to get distracted and start to really feel the minutes crawling by.

There are countless accounts on TikTok dedicated to “The Mandalorian” star Pedro Pascal, where fans gather to ruminate on his acting skills and, of course, dashing good looks. Steven Soderbergh came up through the independent film scene with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" in 1989, but following his dual Oscar nominations for Best Director for "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic" in 2001 (he won for the latter), Soderbergh crossed over into a new level of mainstream success. “Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry,” his wife Sigrid Insull Lucking wrote in an obituary posted on Facebook by his friend and fellow actor Stephen Macht.
Lucking famously played Samcro member Piermont “Piney” Winston on 35 episodes of Kurt Sutter’s FX crime drama “Sons of Anarchy,” from the start of the series through the fourth season (2008 to 2011).
Some more of Lucking’s most notable roles include Army Col. Lynch on “The A-Team” from 1983 to 1984, as well as Bajoran Furel on three episodes of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

Steven Soderbergh and Ed Solomon have landed a series order at HBO Max for the drama “Full Circle,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The series reunites the pair after they worked together on the film “No Sudden Move,” which was released on HBO Max in July. Casey Silver, who was a producer on “No Sudden Move,” will be an executive producer on the series. Soderbergh and Solomon also previously worked together on the HBO series “Mosaic.”
“Even by Ed’s standards this is a complex narrative that manages to be both kaleidoscopic and intimate,” Soderbergh said. “Our task now is to assemble a great cast and make sure we execute at the level the scripts deserve.”
In the six-episode series, an Investigation into a botched kidnapping uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City. Soderbergh will direct all six episodes and serve as executive producer.

For six seasons, since making her debut on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” in 2015, Erika Girardi (stage name: Erika Jayne) has skated along the surface of the Bravo show. She has promoted her singing career, and shown off her seemingly fabulous life in Pasadena, Calif., with her famous lawyer husband, Tom Girardi, who is 33 years her senior (and from whom she is now estranged). She’s bragged about spending $40,000 a month on her glam, and has surrounded herself with several minions on her payroll who cheerlead (and choreograph) her every move. Before the Covid-19 pandemic shut Broadway down, she’d parlayed her fame into a turn on Broadway as Roxie Hart in “Chicago.”
Because Erika has for years used “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” simply to promote her brand — which is nice work if you can get it — and hasn’t gotten down into the muck like some of her fellow cast members,...

Director Steven Soderbergh and producers Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
The announcement did not specify whether the show would be in-person or virtual, a decision that will not be made until the course of the Covid-19 pandemic is clearer.
While Collins is a television producer with a long history of producing live awards shows like the Grammys, BET Awards and Soul Train Awards and Sher is a veteran producer with Oscar nominations for “Django Unchained” and “Erin Brockovich,” the presence of Soderbergh on the producing team is a surprise and something of a coup for Academy president David Rubin.
Soderbergh, who won the Best Director Oscar for “Traffic” in 2000, is an adventurous and iconoclastic film and television director whose work includes “sex, lies and videotape,” “Contagion,” “Out of Sight,” the “Oceans” movies, “Magic Mike” and the recent...

“It’s an honor just to be nominated” is the overused line that many Oscar nominees have said over the years, particularly after a loss. Though that’s true, winning a coveted statuette is the real prize.
The highest-profile overdue veteran actor competing for an Oscar this season is Glenn Close, the wisecracking Mamaw in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” With seven previous nominations (the most of any living actor without a win), Close, who has delivered win-worthy turns in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Fatal Attraction” looks to finally have her moment. Her most recent loss, for 2018’s “The Wife” to Olivia Colman in “The Favourite,” was felt in awards enthusiast circles. With what seems a thin roster of supporting actress contenders this year, Close is in the running once again, looking to go against Colman’s work in “The Father.”
Close’s co-star Amy Adams is playing the same card this year in “Hillbilly Elegy.

Lately, Ron Howard has had his eye on the documentary format. The Academy Award winning director, long known as the helmer of dramatic Oscar fare, has recently been interested in non-fiction. Mostly, it’s been musically inclined, with works like The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, Made in America, and Pavarotti, but this week brought something different. Rebuilding Paradise is a tribute to the perseverance of a California community ravaged by wildfires. It may sound a bit insular, but in Howard’s steady hands, it’s a look at the human spirit and determination to rebuild that we really need these days. The movie is, as you’d imagine, a documentary, focusing on the town of Paradise, California. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the community is about to be devastated by the 2018 wildfires that raged throughout the state. The worst fire in California’s history would...

Why would anyone during a global pandemic take the time to file a lawsuit against the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? “Erin Brockovich” and “Contagion” producer Michael Shamberg said the pandemic has made him feel not only unheard by the Academy but concerned about its future. In an interview, Shamberg recounted his two-year effort to get AMPAS to formally recognize what he feels are “pretty innocuous” ways the Oscars can become more relevant. He escalated that battle when he filed a lawsuit last week accusing the Academy’s board of violating its own bylaws by refusing to vote on his proposals to implement a new social media policy and survey members — a charge that the Academy disputes. He’s for a judge to rule that all AMPAS members should be able to vote on his bylaw amendments. Shamberg’s lawsuit points to numerous examples where he feels the...

Michael Shamberg, the Oscar-nominated producer of The Big Chill and Erin Brockovich, filed a civil action in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday alleging that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — of which he has been a member since 1981 — violated its bylaws by failing to vote on a proposal that he made before its board of governors — of which he is not a member — earlier this year. Shamberg's pitch called for overhauling the organization's social media approach, which he finds to be terribly lacking.

“Erin Brockovich” producer Michael Shamberg has filed a lawsuit against the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences saying the board violated its bylaws when they did not allow for a vote on his proposal for a revised social media strategy.
Shamberg, who is a tenured AMPAS member who also unsuccessfully ran for a board seat back in June, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court and accused the Academy’s board of rejecting his proposal without following the proper rules. He’s asking for a judge to rule that not just the board, but all AMPAS members must vote on his bylaw amendments.
In January, Shamberg met with the Academy to propose amending AMPAS’ bylaws to include “state of the art social media” and “an annual member survey” in order to address what he says are the declining “relevance” of the Oscars. In an attached exhibit he...

Authenticity was key for both women in making Netflix’s real-life rape-investigation drama.
Showrunner Susannah Grant knew it would be hard for viewers to engage with the real-life subject matter of Unbelievable – a rape investigation that is woefully mishandled by the police – but was also aware audiences would lose interest if the show bore the hallmarks of Hollywood storytelling.

Producer Stacey Sher on Casting 'Mrs. America' and Lessons Learned From 'Out of Sight' and 'Gattaca'
Since the late '80s, producer Stacey Sher has consistently had a hand in film and TV projects that helped define the zeitgeist of their particular era. From Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovich to Get Shorty and Garden State, the Academy Award nominee's work manages to create a lasting impression. Furthermore, even some of Sher's work that didn't overwhelm at the box office has now reached cult status, something Gattaca and Reality Bites can both attest to currently. Coronavirus lockdown has been particularly productive for director Steven Soderbergh. The filmmaker, during a Tuesday appearance on a YouTube show, revealed he’s written three screenplays while sheltering in place at his New York home, including a sequel to the 1989 film that brought him to prominence, “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.”
Soderbergh revealed the news on Flaviar’s “NightCap Live,” where he was promoting his Bolivian spirit brand Singani 63. But it wasn’t all talk about booze — Soderbergh delivered when a viewer asked him to tease his future projects.
“During the lockdown I’ve done more sustained writing than I’ve done since the summer of 1985,” he said. “When the lockdown happened here in New York, in order to stay organized and sane, I decided I’m going to write, I’ve got to go back to writing. "I gave the whole town a blowjob." 20 years ago, movie-goers were stunned when their favorite rom-com leading lady Julia Roberts stormed onto the screen wearing a short skirt, six-inch heels and the world's most famous bra, as well as an arsenal of F-bombs in Erin Brockovich. But like the real-life woman she was playing, she proved irresistible, with the superstar landing her first Oscar. Hawaii Five-0 may be about to wrap up its 10 season run but one cast member has already lined up their return to the small screen.
Meaghan Rath has been added to the cast of CBS comedy pilot Jury Duty, which comes from 9Jkl co-creator Dana Klein and writer Stephanie Darrow.
Rath will appear opposite the previously cast Jack Cutmore-Scott for the potential series which follows a group of jurors being sequestered together until they reach a verdict.
Unfortunately for them, they can't even agree on what to eat. It's a convincing hook for a series, but it doesn't scream longevity.
According to Deadline, Rath is playing Jen, a "sarcastic, adorably neurotic and a little controlling" book editor.

Andy Garcia is set to star opposite Katey Sagal in ABC’s Erin Brockovich-inspired drama pilot “Rebel,” TheWrap has learned.
Written by “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19” showrunner Krista Vernoff, “Rebel” is based on the “life of Erin Brockovich today,” according to its official logline.
The potential series stars Sagal as Annie “Rebel” Bello, “a blue collar legal advocate without a law degree. A funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves. When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost.”

A corporate defence lawyer takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company in this emotionally charged and decidedly understated drama from acclaimed director Todd Haynes.
Written by Mario Correa and Matthew Michael Carnahan, Dark Waters is based on a New York Times magazine article titled The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare by Nathaniel Rich.
Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) is a respected corporate lawyer working with big chemical companies helping them pollute without breaking the law. When he is approached by West Virginia farmer Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp) regarding a number of unexplained deaths on his farm which he blames DuPont – one of the world’s largest corporations – Robert is conflicted about representing Wilbur against his own interests.
Robert soon finds himself battling with his own conscience and deep catholic faith leading him to question the work he’s been doing until now. Against his better Judgement and that...

Worthy movies such as Dark Waters used to be the toast of Hollywood. But is the audience for them drying up?
Dark Waters must be the least Todd Haynes film Todd Haynes has ever made. Based on the true story of a corporate lawyer (played by Mark Ruffalo) who switches sides to expose pollution by the DuPont chemical company, it is powerful and creditable, but does not feel like the work of the man who gave us the lush, stylised likes of Carol and Far from Heaven. It feels more like an Oscar-bait issue movie in the mould of Erin Brockovich. Except with Dark Waters, the awards panels didn’t bite and neither, going by Us box-office numbers, have the public. The formula has stopped working, but the films keep coming.
Which is why we need to talk about Participant Media. Participant was founded in 2004 by eBay billionaire Jeff Skoll...

‘The President Is Missing’: Paul Adelstein, Medina Senghore & Gina Gallego Join Showtime Drama Pilot
Exclusive: Paul Adelstein (Scandal), Medina Senghore (Happy!) and Gina Gallego (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) are set as series regulars opposite David Oyelowo in The President Is Missing, Showtime’s drama series adaptation of the novel by President Bill Clinton and James Patterson from Christopher McQuarrie and Anthony Peckham.
In The President Is Missing pilot, a powerless and politically aimless vice president (Oyelowo) unexpectedly becomes president halfway into his administration’s first term, despite his every wish to the contrary. He walks right into a secret, world-threatening crisis, both inside and outside the White House. Attacked by friends and enemies alike, with scandal and conspiracy swirling around him, he is confronted with a terrible choice: keep his head down, toe the party line and survive, or act on his stubborn, late-developing conscience and take a stand.
Adelstein will play Terry Pratt, Martin’s chief of staff. He is smart, loyal and in a permanent state of crisis.

Another weekend, another sweep for our four acting frontrunners. Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), an absent Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) all took home BAFTAs on Sunday, putting them four Oscars shy of becoming the second class of acting champs to complete a full sweep of the televised awards. And if you’re wishing/praying for an upset at the Oscars, well, don’t hold your breath.
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor starting with the 2000-01 season, just one person has lost the Oscar after snagging the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Awards: Russell Crowe in Best Actor for “A Beautiful Mind” (2001). And his loss has long been credited to two factors: his attack on a BAFTA producer for editing his speech and the fact that he had won the previous year for “Gladiator” (2000). It goes...
