Last year, the BBC polled a bunch of critics to determine the 100 greatest American films of all time and only six films released after 2000 placed at all. This year, the BBC decided to determine the “new classics,” films from the past 16 years that will likely stand the test of time, so they polled critics from around the globe for their picks of the 100 greatest films of the 21st Century so far. David Lynch’s “Mulholland Dr.” tops the list, Wong Kar-Wai’s “In The Mood For Love” places second, and Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen Brothers both have 2 films in the top 25. See the full results below.

Though the list itself is fascinating, what’s also compelling are the statistics about the actual list. According to the the BBC, they polled 177 film critics from every continent except Antarctica.

A critics' survey puts Mullholland Drive at the top of the list of the best films since 2000. Did yours make the cut?
Movie critics love Linklater, Studio Ghibli, the Coens and the surrealist stylings of David Lynch. At least, that's if a newly-published list of the 100 greatest films of the 21st century is anything to go by.
BBC Culture commissioned the poll, which took in responses from 177 film critics from all over the world. As a result, the top 100 includes an eclectic mix of the mainstream to independent movies, from dramas to sci-fi and off-beat comedies. Feew would be surprised to see things like Paolo Sorrentino's handsome Italian confection The Great Beauty propping up the lower end of the list, or that such acclaimed directors as Wes Anderson or the aforementioned Coens feature heavily.
What is pleasing to see, though, is how much good genre stuff has made the cut,...

Although we’re only about 16% into the 21st century thus far, the thousands of films that have been released have provided a worthy selection to reflect on the cinematic offerings as they stand. We’ve chimed in with our favorite animations, comedies, sci-fi films, and have more to come, and now a new critics’ poll that we’ve taken part in has tallied up the 21st century’s 100 greatest films overall.
The BBC has polled 177 critics from around the world, resulting in a variety of selections, led by David Lynch‘s Mulholland Drive. Also in the top 10 was Wong Kar-wai‘s In the Mood For Love and Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life, which made my personal ballot (seen at the bottom of the page).
In terms of the years with the most selections, 2012 and 2013 each had 9, while Wes Anderson, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Christopher Nolan, the Coens, Michael Haneke, and...

I'm sure most of you watched the Academy Awards last night, so I wanted to create a place for you to talk to us and your fellow commenters about the winners, losers, snubs, performances, and host. For good reason, the topic of diversity was looming large in the minds of the producers of the broadcast, and I thought host Chris Rock did a great job of ripping Hollywood while at the same time creating a call to action for equal opportunity in the industry (which is all the controversy really boils down to). For addressing a tough, complicated issue that obviously doesn't start and end with the organization of the Oscars, I thought it was handled about as well as it could have been.
As for the winners and losers, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mad Max: Fury Road take home as many awards as it did, considering what...

The winners of the 88th Annual Academy Awards have been announced, the biggest award Best Picture went to 'Spotlight.' 'The Revenant' took home the Best Director Oscar for Alejandro González Iñárritu, making Iñárritu the third director in history to win back-to-back directing and Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Oscar for Best Actor (and there was much rejoicing).
Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki also won his third Best Cinematography Oscar in a row for 'The Revenant.' 'Mad Max: Fury Road' was the big winner of the night for most awards, sweeping the technical categories to earn six Oscars, including Best Production Design.
It was a great year for Irish talent picking up nominations but only Stutterer, which was directed by Irishman Benjamin Cleary managed to pick up a award in Best Short Film (Live Action). The short can be viewed on the Rte player here.

Most Academy Awards hand out five nominations apiece. Some awards only hand out three; a few years ago, the Academy opened up the Best Picture race to like a million nominees. But the specific number doesn’t really matter. Most races inevitably come down to some kind of face-off between two nominees: Frontrunner vs. Dark Horse, Beloved Veteran vs. Dynamic Newcomer, Megahit vs. Beloved Smaller Film, Dark Tale Of The Modern World vs. Sentimental Nostalgia Bait.
Each year, though there are races that defy any easy binary rendering. These are the categories that stacked almost too high with talent. Sometimes that’s clear right away,...

The Movie Pool takes a long look at the short films of Pixar from their new Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Short films from Pixar, many featuring characters from the studio's feature fims, are presented.
The Delivery
This second collection of short films from Pixar features 12 cartoons in stunning high definition. Many of the shorts were previously available on Pixar home video releases (including "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Air Mater"), and three are Academy Award nominees.
What we get in Volume 2 of the series is an eclectic mix of styles and approaches, and for the most part, it all works well. While some are mildly amusing, others (like "Day and Night") are exceptional, that entertain and manage to be original.
The shorts included in the collection are:
"Your Friend the Rat" Ratatouille's Remy and Emile provide the disgusting yet funny history of rats. Director Jim Capobianco and production designer Nate Wragg provide an optional audio commentary.

Pete Docter is one of Pixar's most talented employees. He was the first Pixar director besides John Lasseter to get to direct a film and his first film, Monsters, Inc., is by far one of the company's best. So it's no surprise that when Docter was a student at the California Institute of the Arts in 1988 that his talent already shined through.
Docter's student film, Winter, which you can see above, is a hand-drawn animated short that tells the story of a young boy excited for snow. (Something we on the East Coast can no longer relate to this year - we are officially snowed out.) While the animation style is incredibly simplistic, it's impressive how much emotion Docter is able to convey without words. He accomplishes a lot in the film's 90-second run time.

For those of you who don't already know, Pete Doctor is a director at Pixar studios whose directed films such as Monsters, Inc. and Up. He's also worked on screenwriting and animation work on Toy Story, Wall-e and a few other other Pixar films.
Below is a student film called Winter that Doctor made while he was at California Institute of the Arts. It's not an incredibly impressive animated short, I've seen better, but it's very charming so I think you'll enjoy it. Check it out and tell us what you think!

[1] Tim Burton [2] isn't the only notable director whose promise showed from early on -- we have here a student film by fellow California Institute of the Arts alumnus Pete Docter, titled Winter. Docter, of course, is one of Pixar's most prominent staff members and is best known for directing Monsters, Inc. and Up. He has also done screenwriting and animation work on Toy Story, Wall-e and various other Pixar films. In Docter's short film, a young child gets excited when he notices falling snow, only to find that once he's gotten into his winter clothes, he's so bundled up that he's unable to actually enjoy the snow. At just one minute and 36 seconds, Winter has probably the highest joy to time ratios you'll encounter all day. Watch it after the jump. [via Dailymotion [3]] The rough, hand-drawn animation in Winter is a far cry from the sleek, high-tech graphics of Docter's best-known work,...

"It's been a 4 1/2-year journey, and this is not typically the kind of film that critics love, it being a genre movie and being seen as a big commercial movie." Cameron, also nominated for a best director Golden Globe, was pleased the movie also got some love in the music category. "I think this is James Horner's best score to date," he says. But he says he is sad his actors got short shrift. "Maybe there's a sense that acting for performance capture isn't the same as acting for a lens, which is going to take an education. I think that will eventually go away.

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".
It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not.
