Like most Pixar shorts, entertaining and over far too soon - 82%
22 September 2013 | by (Hampshire, England) – See all my reviews

Due to fairly unique circumstances, I watched this last night before I went to sleep. I'd actually forgotten that I had downloaded this to my iPhone so for once, I didn't have to catch it before a Pixar feature or wait for the Blu-Ray to come out. Like most Pixar shorts, it is an utterly beguiling few minutes with enough laughs for everybody from granny to little Peggy Sue. The fact that it features the regular "Toy Story" crew as well as giving the real star of the third film something else to do is also a real bonus.

With all the toys happily relocated to Bonnie's house, Ken (Michael Keaton) and Barbie (Jodi Benson) are excited to be going with Bonnie as she travels to Hawaii for the Christmas holidays. But alas, they stowaway in Bonnie's school bag and get left behind. Ken is devastated as he had planned out their romantic trip but with the help of Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the toys, they put on a show to make Ken and Barbie feel like they're on holiday at least.

Keaton's performance in "Toy Story 3" was, for me, a real highlight so to find him unleashed on "Hawaiian Vacation" is a genuine delight. It is very funny and surprisingly affecting - when our plastic lovebirds venture out into the snow, the other toys' watching from the window feel as warm and cosy as a roaring fireplace. While it might lack the sub-text of its feature-length father, "Hawaiian Vacation" is the sort of thoroughly entertaining animated short that Pixar produce seemingly at will. As Ken himself might say, "Fabulous show, you guys!"
