Storyline

Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating "dangerous" babies. Crocodiles, porcupines, rams and more - Gus's beloved creations are works of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork partner, Peck. As Gus's creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck's job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend's fiery temperament? A decent effort but not as funny as other Pixar shorts - 79%

Like all Pixar cinema releases, "Up" has a little warm-up act in the shape of an animated short film - much like films in the Forties & Fifties were preceded by Tom & Jerry. "Partly Cloudy" was shown before "Up" (presumably to maintain the whole airborne theme) and offers a quick humorous aside before the main event. But like "Up", this isn't the laugh-a-second fare we've become accustomed to although given how much better Pixar are than other animators, it isn't exactly a criticism.

Storks, far from being simple wading birds, actually spend their time delivering babies to parents of all kind. One such stork, however, finds his bundles of joy a little harder to manage than most toddlers. Anything from sharks, hedgehogs and other edgy creatures are given to him by his cloud partner, who keeps trying to produce "normal" deliveries. Can the bird accept his cloud's faults and work around before he pulls the last of his feathers out in frustration?

While not quite as fun as the frankly sublime "Presto", "Partly Cloudy" offers a beautifully animated quickie with a couple of laughs thrown in for good measure. But that's it - nothing to make me laugh out loud as there was in "Presto". Having said that, this is still entertaining and still fun and still has more imagination in it than most full-length animated features from other companies. And anyway, how can you complain when you get something for nothing?
