In the mid-’70s, Kansas rose to fame with the hit “Carry On Wayward Son,” featured on the classic rock band’s fourth studio album, Leftoverture. The group followed that with two big songs off its fifth album, Point of Know Return, making Kansas a household name. However, drummer Phil Ehart says releasing three back-to-back hits was unintentional.

Kansas released Point of Know Return in 1977. The studio album featured the band’s biggest hit, “Dust in the Wind,” and other fan favorites, including “Sparks of the Tempest” and “Closet Chronicles.” In a January 2023 conversation with Ultimate Classic Rock, Ehart explained how the title track became an unexpected hit.

“He’s here! He’s there! He’s every f***ing where!” This chant is used to greet the fictional Roy Kent in Apple TV‘s hit show Ted Lasso. However, these days it could also be used to describe Roy’s real-life counterpart Brett Goldstein, whose fame has skyrocketed thanks to his appearance as the foul-mouthed but lovable footballer.
Ted Lasso has been a critical part of Goldstein’s career. However, it’s entertaining to know he didn’t have much hope for its success at first.

“Yellowstone” prequel “1883” has been renewed for additional episodes at Paramount Plus, and the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service has ordered another Taylor Sheridan-created origin-story show following the Dutton Family called “1932.” Yes, you guessed it — the show will follow a new generation of Duttons “during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression.”
“1883″ stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, Lamonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen and James Landry Hébert.
The show follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of western expansion and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana. It is executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

Jane Campion’s Netflix Western The Power of the Dog, Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical Focus pic Belfast and and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story all scored additional slots in the Sound category,...

Scope around certain movie sites or Film Twitter and you may find reference to a slated upcoming DC comics adaptation title Justice League Dark—Guillermo del Toro and Doug Liman have been attached, so it’s probably not too embarrassing. The French Dispatch, in a similar naming fashion, could really be title Wes Anderson Dark, or even Wes Anderson After Dark. The film is primarily presented in black-and-white academy ratio; in the occasional color sequences its palette is still a grim, swirling miasma of moonlit tones. And the themes and subject matter couldn’t be accused of indulging anyone’s inner child, wonderful as the likes of Rushmore and Fantastic Mr. Fox remain. Isle of Dogs, flawed and sometimes misguided as it was, provided hints Anderson was growing tired of his patented, semi-cutesy aesthetic fussiness. The French Dispatch pleases as a larger fulfillment of this promise.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

Updated with Hawley response: Senator Josh Hawley responded Thursday to what he called “the woke mob” at Simon & Schuster, which earlier in the day announced it was canceling publication of his upcoming book, calling the move “Orwellian.”
“This is not just a contract dispute. It’s a direct assault on the First Amendment, Only approved speech can now be published. This is the Left looking to cancel everyone they don’t approve of. I will fight this cancel culture with everything I have. We’ll see you in court,” he tweeted.
Publisher Simon & Schuster announced it will no longer publish Hawlye’s The Tyranny of Big Tech after “witnessing the disturbing, deadly insurrection that took place yesterday in Washington, D.C.”
“As a publisher, it will always be our mission to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints: at the same time we take seriously our larger public responsibility...

One Los Angeles evening in 1975, Neil Young gathered a few friends together at the Chateau Marmont to play them some music. He had two new albums in the can, and wasn’t sure which one to release. Sitting inside the same bungalow that John Belushi would die in just seven years later, Young’s friends — which included some of his Crazy Horse bandmates and Rick Danko and Richard Manuel of the Band — listened to two wildly different records.

“Here is the screen’s most shocking exposé, of the ‘Baby-Facers’ just taking their first stumbling steps down Sin Street U.S.A.!” Robert Altman’s first feature film is far too good to be described as any but an expert step toward an impressive career. Xena will go on to face Oliver Queen for the title of the TV Heroes division. Queen scored a stunning upset, having defeated Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes. Director Neema Barnette was recently honored at the 6th Annual Lady Filmmakers Festival, and rightfully so. She made history as the first African American Woman to direct a major network TV sitcom, and the first African American woman to get a major studio deal. She has won countless awards (including an Emmy, the NAACP Image Award, the Women in Radio & TV Award, the Lilly Award, and the Peabody Award to name a few) and is a shining example of what is possible for women in film.
Neema shares her thoughts on the Lady Filmmakers Festival, her inspiration and the beginnings of her career, and her own advice to women who are just embarking on their own journeys in film:
What was your impression of the Lady Filmmakers Festival?
I’ve been in many festivals with my film “Civil Brand”, which was at Sundance and won five other festivals, including the American Black Film Festival and the Urbanworld Film Festival. This festival was interesting because it focused on women and the men who work with them, which I’ve never seen before. That was really interesting. It also was very intimate and supportive. What I liked the most is how people came up to me after the first seminar and shared how excited and encouraged they were.
As an experienced female filmmaker and director, I truly understand the significance of this festival. There aren’t enough women directing in our business. Even though the statistics are low, we still have to keep moving them up. It is not true that women can’t fulfill their dreams of becoming filmmakers, and share their voices cinematically.
What was it like for you to start your film career, and what was the inspiration that kept you going?
I was very young, and never the kind of person who was told I couldn’t do things. In school, one of our teachers was Vinette Carol, a black director from the West Indies who directed plays on Broadway - I had never seen a black woman director before. When I was in college, Vinette was working with what was called Urban Arts Corps and chose me to act in her plays.
After that experience, I got a job at the Harlem Ymca as a drama and dance instructor for the summer. It was through this that I recreated Vinette Carol's plays with the kids. I really enjoyed it, and felt authentically creative in this process.
I joined a theater group in Harlem called The Frank Silver Writer's Workshop. They had a play and asked, “Who wants to direct it?” I was young and daring enough to raise my hand, and I did it! I really enjoyed directing that play, and knew it was what I wanted to do.
I was a young director when I got accepted to the American Film Institute. I knew how to work with actors, how to develop characters, but I didn’t know too much about filmmaking. My only film experience prior to this was at Third World Cinema in New York, which was made to train people in developing countries about film and television.
When I got to La, I did my film "Sky Captain"' and I was encouraged. I think my motivation came from my love for directing. It was what I loved to do, and I just kept doing it.
When I graduated and started getting hired as a professional director, I was in heaven. I was getting paid for what I love to do. I was also told things like “You’re too young to be a director,” and “directors are old, and you have to have experience,” but I just ignored that and said I’m directing. That’s it!
There were several people who were very encouraging, including Jean Ferstenburg, Gloria Steinem, and Roselyn Heller. Barbara Corday, Head of Columbia Television at the time, hired me and it was her decision that helped me to make history as the first African American woman to direct in television! I also had support from people like Paul Mason at Viacom, David Putnam at Columbia Pictures, Frank Price of Sony Pictures, Tom Werner of Carsey Werner TV, Robert Greenwald, Bill Haber at CAA and Hugh Wilson. I was kind of a novelty, and very appreciative for them to take a shot and give me opportunities to work.
What is your best advice for young women filmmakers?
I’ve been an adjunct professor at USC for seven years, and this is my 18th year at UCLA. I tell my students that they need to understand that nothing is easy, but when you have a passion for something, you just have to do it.
Now is a better time than ever, because you don’t have to be in Hollywood to make a movie. You can be in Kansas and use your iPhone to make a movie. The Internet has provided such a great creative outlet for young people to tell their stories. With things like the web series, it’s a very exciting time to be a filmmaker.
My advice is to find their tribe, their group of people with positivity, like minds and spirit. You need the honesty of what’s coming ahead, but you also need the inspiration to get you through it. That’s very important. You can’t be a filmmaker because you want to party and where all black at festivals. You have to have a voice, because film is one of the most important art forms for social change we have - even if it’s just pure entertainment, it’s still influential.
I think that we as women have to really stick together, and really understand that the images put on the screen will really affect generations to come. Film is in perpetuity, and we have a responsibility to say something real.
Positivity is important. It doesn’t make sense to keep complaining. The time that you spend complaining is the time that you could spend creating something. A lot of success isn’t all based on talent. It’s based on perseverance and building connections.
What projects are you working on?
I have a couple of projects that I’m working on. I’m writing a script about Ida B. Wells Barnett, one of the first black women to ever have a newspaper. She was active in the anti-lynching movement.
I’m also doing a family film called "Soccer Monkey" with Myrl Schreibman. It's exciting because it's something different from my usual. It’s a heart-warming film (being produced by Good Deed Productions) about a kind of lonely young kid who befriends a chimp who can play soccer. After dealing with films of very serious matters, it’s nice to change it up.
I’m also very excited about a web series that my husband and I started called Black History Mini Docs. They’re docs about black history and are about 90 seconds long. We started it a year ago on Facebook and have gotten so many positive responses.
My daughter, a playwright, has a new play that I'll be directing in New York soon. I’m absolutely thrilled about it!

Some may say that television hasn’t been too good to senior citizens in terms of their stereotypical depictions. Regardless of the unflattering portrayals there had been some memorable oldsters (in this case over 60) that have given us equal shares of both laughs and cries. In “For Mature Audiences Only”, let’s take a look at some of the more mature characterizations that had an impact on our daily doses of entertainment on the glorious boob tube.
Instead of doing a typical top ten or top twenty listing let’s go in between with a top fifteen selection, shall we? The “For Mature Audiences Only” choices are not necessarily a tasting that everyone will agree on. Perhaps you have your own preferences that were omitted or something that you feel should be added? Anyway, here are the candidates in alphabetical order…
Now for our pop cultural Pepto Bismol personalities:

If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. And as if those weren’t enough, this years retro screening is the awesome, and formerly banned in the UK, Mark of the Devil, from director Michael Armstrong.
This years London event is scheduled for Saturday 26th October from 6.30pm and will be located for the third year at the Vue, West End. Tickets (costing...

Hitting the bars of Kansas with the Rumble Fish star back in 1987
On a day off from playing a bank robber in the film Kansas in 1987, Matt Dillon was keen to drive me around the movie's location, a town called Lawrence in the titular state, despite the expletives scratched large into the paintwork of his car ("Some girl," he shrugged).
Wearing a Jack Daniel's cap backwards, he soon homed in on "the poorest part of town" and cruised and mused on the lives of "drunk and armed folk" on crumbling porches. Speeding into countryside, to a soundtrack of religious radio ("Do you believe in sowing & reaping?"), he exclaimed: "Wheat! As far as your mince pies can see. Feeding a nation!"
I asked what he'd be doing if back in his home town of New York. "The greatest pleasure for me is to grab a Post, read it backwards, sports first,...

We are now less than 24 hours away from the kick-off to the 2013 NFL Draft.
On Thursday night, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will walk up to the podium, welcome all of the fans to an exciting evening and then, the Kansas City Chiefs will be on the clock.
Ever since the end of Super Bowl Xlviii back in February, fans have been making their wish lists and making their own mock drafts for their teams.
Some of those lists changed dramatically back in March when free agency started and teams shelled out major money to land premier talent on the market.
But teams have also been very quiet in free agency with the draft in mind, like the reigning Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.
After they defeated the San Francisco 49ers two months ago, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Dannell Ellerbe, Paul Kruger, Cary Williams, Bernard Pollard, Anquan Boldin and Matt Birk have all either retired,...

Chicago – The general consensus in Park City this year was that the overall quality of films presented to critics, industry, and paying audiences was near the highest it’s ever been. There seemed to be a lack of true stand-outs — I heard people say “There’s no Beasts of the Southern Wild” repeatedly — but the overall picture was a pretty one. I have to say that it was easy to find ten films from this year’s fest that I thoroughly recommend, some of which will likely find their way into my best-of-year lists in eleven months. In alphabetical order and with details on when you can see them, these were the best that the Sundance Film Festival had to offer in 2013:
Honorable Mentions: “C.O.G.,” “Fire in the Blood,” “No,” and “S-vhs.”

CBS is slowly rolling out on DVD television's longest running show, Gunsmoke. Season 7 (Volume 1) of this 20-year series continues the saga of Dodge City, Kansas, where American western tropes are hashed out—and rehashed—each week. There are cowboys, prostitutes, and outlaws galore in this surprisingly heartwarming series.
Just like Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, too, has an episodic formula. Each episode features a small group of new characters who in some way get involved with Dodge City and the main characters of the show. Usually they cause trouble that requires the attention of Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) and almost always results in the death of one of the guest stars. Other main characters include saloon-owner Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake), Doc Adams (Milburn Stone), and Dillon's deputy sidekick Chester (Dennis Weaver). While there are no real recurring stories, there are solid relationships between the main characters that keep viewers engaged—especially...

Today, we enter the Final Four round of our Superhero Showdown — our ultra-mega-championship to decide which costumed crimefighter is the greatest superhero in comic book history. Today, we need you to vote in a match-up that, in many ways, defined the mainstream comic book industry for decades. In one corner: Superman, the original DC hero, a handsome image of All-American(-by-way-of-Krypton) invulnerability. In the other corner: Spider-Man, the defining Marvel hero-with-personal-problems, a creepy-cool image of urban adolescence run amok. They make ideal counterpoints. Superman flies over Metropolis, observing crime from on high like a candy-colored demi-god; Spider-Man swings through the tall shadows of Manhattan.
