Sharni Vinson makes a great leading lady (especially in horror films)!

'PATRICK: EVIL AWAKENS': Four Stars (Out of Five)

An Australian remake of the 1978 horror flick of the same name directed by Mark Hartley (who's most well known for directing documentaries on rare exploitation films) and written by first time film writer Justin King. It stars Sharni Vinson, Charles Dance, Rachel Griffiths, Peta Sergeant, Damon Gameau, Martin Crewes and Jackson Gallagher (in the title role). It tells the story of a nurse, recently employed at a remote psychiatric ward, who becomes fascinated with a mysterious comatose patient there (who also has psychic abilities). It's pretty cheesy but a lot of fun, especially if you like campy horror films!

Vinson stars as Kathy Jacquard, a young nurse who fills a job opening at an isolated mental hospital. She impresses the lead scientist there right away, Doctor Roget (Dance), with her medical knowledge but doesn't hit it off well with his daughter, Matron Cassidy (Griffiths), who's long been employed there. She makes friends with another nurse, Nurse Williams (Sergeant), and draws romantic interest from Williams' ex fling, Brian Wright (Crewes). She also must ignore persistent calls from her own ex though, Ed Penhaligon (Gameau). At the same time she becomes quite intrigued with a brain dead patient there named Patrick (Gallagher). Patrick has a dark past and abilities which put Kathy and all those close to her in grave danger.

Vinson is very impressive in the lead and she makes a great leading lady (especially in horror films like this; following 'YOU'RE NEXT' from last year). I named her in my 'Most Desirable Actresses of 2013' list and she retweeted the video; so now I'm a huge fan of hers! I also listed Peta Sergeant in my 'Most Desirable Actresses of 2012' review (for a movie called 'IRON SKY'). I do think both of these extremely attractive women are talented actresses as well though and my interest in this movie isn't just influenced by my crushes on them. It is a well made film; I think Hartley did a great job directing and he seems to have a real talent for (and interest in) this kind of genre filmmaking. King's script is clever as well and it's a great homage to B horror flicks. All of the performances are decent or good in it; Gallagher (who also co-starred in the same Australian TV show as Vinson, called 'HOME AND AWAY') is memorable even in a nonspeaking role. It's clichéd and corny and the music is over the top (by Pino Donaggio) but it's meant to be; it's just a great time at the movies! I haven't seen the original so I can't compare the two but I did enjoy this movie. It's at least worth a $6.99 iTunes rental (and I watched it twice to make sure I got my money's worth).
