Walk into the room where Caitlin Cronenberg is sitting, idly checking her phone and chatting with a friend, and you will be greeted by: Chaos.
The 39-year-old filmmaker already cuts an imposing figure, courtesy of a mane of dyed red hair in maximum tousled mode, some impressively art deco nailwork and her wide-set eyes, capable of a full-bore stare that Cronenberg uses to unblinkingly punctuate deadpan jokes (and which make her a dead ringer for her late mother). Denise Cronenberg, the sister of film director David Cronenberg and a prominent costume designer who dressed such stars as Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, and Jeremy Irons, has died. She passed May 22 at Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario, Canada at age 81 from complications of old age.
“We would put on plays in our house for the neighborhood and they were always instigated by Denise,” said David Cronenberg, age 77. “She was always a performer, which certainly later helped her with her work in terms of understanding actors and performances.”
Denise’s first first film as David’s costume designer was the 1986 remake of The Fly, starring Jeff Goldblum.
“She would conspire with the actors and it was very delicious for them, because they would feel very special because she was paying attention to them,” said David. “All good costume designers have to do this, but it’s a...

News broke on Thursday that Denise Cronenberg, an award-winning costume designer and sister to filmmaker David Cronenberg, died on May 22. She passed away in Ontario, Canada, at the age of 81. Her career as a costume designer launched on her brother’s 1986 horror movie “The Fly,” starring Jeff Goldblum, after several careers, first as a ballet dancer and then as a fashion designer.
After “The Fly,” Denise Cronenberg went on to costume many of her brother’s films, including “Naked Lunch,” “M. Butterfly,” “Crash,” “eXistenZ,” “Spider,” “A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Cosmopolis,” and “Maps to the Stars,” his last feature as a director. On his 1988 “Dead Ringers,” Denise Cronenberg created the blood-red, religiously charged medical robes that Jeremy Irons’ twin doctors wear in the operating theater.
“We tried out the 100-per-cent accurate version of what doctors would wear, but that was boring,” David Cronenberg told The Globe and Mail.

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up: David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars." The director: David Cronenberg (Canadian, 71 years old). I don't think I exactly need to introduce Cronenberg, unless your auteur radar extends only to directors who have been nominated for Oscars. The cinema's currently dormant king of body horror has shifted in and out of genres and levels of respectability, his previous 20 features taking him from shoestring kink ("Stereo") to more elaborate gross-out cult items ("Videodrome") to warped mainstream fare ("The Fly") to icy arthouse provocations ("Crash") to tastefully cerebral prestige items ("A Dangerous Method"), with any number of stages in between.

We haven't given a lot of coverage to Cosmopolis aside from Andrew's highly positive review, but knowing how many Cronenberg fans there are around here, we wanted to pass on the news that the film's Blu-ray/DVD release date from Entertainment One is January 1, 2013.
From the Press Release:
From director David Cronenberg (A History of Violence, Dead Ringers, Eastern Promises) and based on the prophetic novel by Don DeLillo, comes Cosmopolis, a contemporary thriller that turns into a wild, hypnotic odyssey through our new millennium's obsessions with power, money, control, information, technology, violence, sex, mortality, revolution, destruction, and, ultimately, redemption. Available on New Year's Day, 2013, Entertainment One presents this acclaimed 2012 U.S. theatrical release on Blu-ray and DVD, packed with extras including a "Citizens of Cosmopolis" featurette, audio commentary with director Cronenberg and interviews with the cast and crew.

Cosmopolis is visual shorthand for David Cronenberg: vaguely futuristic setting, bursts of sex and violence, body horror; its literal and/or figurative consumption by disease, and a lean male protagonist driven by obsession and unable to reconcile his life.
Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) is a billionaire broker travelling across Manhattan in his white limousine for a haircut. He sets out wearing black single breasted Gucci suit, plain white Gucci shirt, black silk necktie, black leather lace-ups, black leather belt, titanium Chanel wristwatch and black Oliver Peoples sunglasses. As Cosmopolis progresses, Packer’s attire disintegrates alongside his business empire and fracturing psyche. His soiled shirt represents a man ruined. Packer’s exquisite facade guarded the key to his rotten soul. Without it he is exposed.

Robert Pattinson reportedly very lovely, nice & more On Cosmopolis movie set. Recently, the costume designer for Rob's new "Cosmopolis" flick Denise Cronenberg, talked with the press, and gave Rob extreme praise for his work in the film. Apparently,he was extremely nice and lovely on the set. Denise said, "oh, he’s lovely! He’s such a nice, sweet kid. He’s intelligent and smart." He went on to reveal that Rob was very brave in taking on the role, because Rob was quite hesitant at first. However, Rob had a great relationship with director David Cronenberg, and he made him feel at ease. Denise also revealed that they had to do raves, street fires, and have cars exploding in the film. Also, Gucci was nice enough to hook them up with free suits for the film, which was especially great since they had no money at all,he claims.

Rob's costume designer for 'Cosmopolis' gushes about how sweet he is, how she dressed him head to toe in Gucci (sexy!) and what action scenes we can expect to see in the movie! Read on! Denise Cronenberg, Robert Pattinson's Cosmopolis costume designer, only had nice things to say about the heartthrob in a new interview with Grazia Daily. "Oh, he’s lovely! He’s such a nice, sweet kid. He’s intelligent and smart," Denise says in the interview. "He was very brave to take on something like this because I think he was quite hesitant at first." Of course, we wouldn't expect anything less from R-Patz. He does seem like the coolest and most down-to-earth guy in Hollywood. Rob plays the character Eric Packer in Cosmopolis -- a young billionaire living in Manhattan. Denise went on to say that the film was an "unusual" one to...

30 years ago the prospect of David Cronenberg directing a period piece was as likely as Mike Leigh merging into horror movies. Well the 68 year old Canadian has come a long way since his body horror days. His last film to completely embody all of his distinct body conscious characteristics was 1999′s sci-fi fantasy eXistenZ. Since then he has evolved into a film-maker who is increasingly harder to pin down, with existential thrillers A History of Violence and Eastern Promises pathing alternative territory for the auteur. His latest, A Dangerous Method, which takes place in 1913 Austria on the eve of the Great War and looks at the birth of psychoanalysis through the intense love/hate relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, shares more in common with his 2002 film Spider – both being historical dramas concerning a psychologically unhinged character.

Well, look at that: Brundlefly is twenty-five years old today. On August 15, 1986, David Cronenberg’s The Fly was released by Twentieth-Century Fox. The film became Cronenberg’s greatest success to date, and quickly established itself as an instant classic of practical effects thanks to the Oscar-winning work of Chris Walas. (Who would go on to direct the sequel.) The Fly also gave stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, who had met and begun dating while making Transylvania 6-5000, their first true breakout lead opportunities. Those are all significant results of the film’s release, but The Fly is a film worth revisiting and honoring for other reasons. It marks a real turning point in the career of David Cronenberg, and stands as one of the unassailable arguments for the idea of the film remake. And, in the cinematic culture of 2011, where the superhero is ascendant, some of you might join...

The A Dangerous Method Trailer has premiered. David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method (2011) movie trailer stars Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Vincent Cassel, and Sarah Gadon. A Dangerous Method‘s plot synopsis: “Based on Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed 2002 play “The Talking Cure,” the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (Fassbender) and Russian-Jewish patient Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), who ultimately causes a rift between Jung and mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) but also catalyses strong findings in regards to Jungian psychoanalysis.”
This looks very good and twisted. David Cronenberg has a great eye and I look forward to seeing how his eye is used in a drama movie. I can’t say I have ever seen Keira Knightley playing such a risky part before. I thought the same thing about Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream. The last few days have been crazy with trailers. Puss and Boots, Harry Potter, Footloose, The Muppets, 30 Minutes or Less, and many other films we didn't get a chance to focus on here at Tmp. But does the trailer for David Cronenberg's newest film, A Dangerous Method, reign champion over them all?
No, not really. Well I wanted this to be a really good trailer, I was mostly disappointed. It's pretty short, despite being a theatrical trailer. And while the story of Sigmund Freud's relationship with Carl Jung is interesting, I didn't really feel any of the tension between them in this trailer. It mostly focuses on Freud's affair with his patient Sabina Spielrein, which doesn't seem to be the main facet of the story.

Aren't you glad you didn't look at the bootleg? Here's a proper-quality trailer for David Cronenberg's new film, A Dangerous Method, which stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen as Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, respectively. Check it out below. (You can also see the trailer at the film's official site [1].) Really, all I need to see here is Michael Fassbender as Jung and I'm sold. But Viggo looks great, as does Vincent Cassel, and some of Keira Knightley's moments help ease any anxiety I had about that casting. (A few other moments make me worry about her accent, but we'll see how that works out when the time comes.) And then with Howard Shore's music and the characteristic Cronenberg title cards working with the lovely cinematography of Peter Suschitzky, there's a lot of Dead Ringers feeling here. (Which is appropriate as that was the first Cronenberg/Suschitzky pairing.

Sony Pictures Classics announced that they have picked up the distribution rights to David Cronenberg's new film, A Dangerous Method. The film is based on a play by Christopher Hampton (Atonement) called The Taking Cure who also wrote the screenplay. The film has an amazing cast of actors that includes Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, a mutual patient. I'm a big fan of the films of Cronenberg, and you can't argue with such a wonderful cast. This is sure to turn out to be a great film.

We’ve missed you David Cronenberg. It’s been four years since your last feature and we are getting impatient. Thankfully, you are working hard with two new films and we now know who will be distributing one. We get word today that Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the Us rights for A Dangerous Method, the film based on Christopher Hampton‘s 2002 play The Talking Cure, and starring Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, and Vincent Cassel. There is no word on release, but expect it later this year after its confirmed Venice Film Festival premiere.
As for his next film Cosmopolis, currently shooting in Toronto, expect a release in 2012. That drama stars Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand and Sarah Gadon. For now check out the full press release, and a bootleg trailer for A Dangerous Method. I recommend completely avoiding it until the real thing,...

Good news for David Cronenberg fans: his next film, A Dangerous Method, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. The movie is an adaptation of the play The Talking Cure by Christopher Hampton, and stars Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, the woman who was their mutual patient. We don't have a release date yet, but expect it to hit the fall festival circuit. (Tiff is the likely home, given David Cronenberg's status as a Canadian artistic hero [1], but it could also hit the Venice fest.) Here's some of the Spc press release announcing the pickup: Cronenberg once again gathered a prestigious crew to work on A Dangerous Method, director of photography Peter Suschitsky (A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises), composer Howard Shore (The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, Avatar), editor Ronald Sanders (A History Of Violence,...

Here's a very good turn of events for David Cronenberg's adaptation [1] of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis, which is now scheduled to shoot in late May. The film stars [2] Robert Pattinson as a young billionaire, who during the course of one day traveling across Manhattan in his limo, manages to cheat on his wife, deal with protesters and another antagonist or two, and encounter some financial trouble. We don't know who'll play his wife (Marion Cotillard was once set [3], and Keira Knightley was rumored [4], then debunked [5]) but we do know that Paul Giamatti will be one of the antagonists [6]. And now Juliette Binoche is in the cast, and Mathieu Almaric may be along for the ride, too. Screen Daily [7] mentions Ms. Bincoche without specifying what role she'll play. When Colin Farrell was cast as the lead I could possibly have seen her playing his wife. Opposite Robert Pattinson, however,...
