Disliked Films I like (Ongoing Chronicle)

by KingProjector93 | created - 02 Dec 2014 | updated - 6 months ago | Public

They may not be the best, funniest, most exciting or well written, but these are the motion pictures that, despite their faults, I found myself pleasantly surprised by, and even growing quite fond of.

1. Con Air (1997)

R | 115 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

52 Metascore

Newly-paroled ex-con and former U.S. Ranger Cameron Poe finds himself trapped in a prisoner-transport plane when the passengers seize control.

Director: Simon West | Stars: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Colm Meaney

Votes: 319,484 | Gross: $101.12M

Never stopping for a hamfisted message unlike 'The Rock', 'Con Air' is testosterone-pumping 90s action cheese at its most potent. And I love every single overworked and silly second of it!

2. The Shadow (1994)

PG-13 | 108 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

50 Metascore

In 1930s New York City, The Shadow (Alec Baldwin) battles his nemesis, Shiwan Khan (John Lone), who is building an atomic bomb.

Director: Russell Mulcahy | Stars: Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle

Votes: 27,146 | Gross: $32.06M

How ironic the character who inspired Batman would have his film labelled a knock-off of the 1989 film. Doesn't change the fact that, aside form solid production values and a game cast, David Koepp offers one of his liveliest and wittiest scripts here.

3. The Phantom (1996)

PG | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

53 Metascore

The Phantom, descendent of a line of African superheroes, travels to New York City to thwart a wealthy criminal genius from obtaining three magic skulls which would give him the secret to ultimate power.

Director: Simon Wincer | Stars: Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, Catherine Zeta-Jones

Votes: 35,833 | Gross: $17.30M

Though simple and undemanding, 'Phantom' is a good adaptation of the legendary character (one of the first to wear the trademark spandex and domino mask outfits of superheroes), boasting a fun little adventure.

With some good set pieces and a cast embracing the inherently old fashioned nature of the material (Billy Zane as a smiling, charming do-gooder, while Treat Williams wonderfully chews up scenery like a termite as the slimy businessman-villain, Drax), Wincer's adventure will fit any adventure-fix very nicely.

4. Hook (1991)

PG | 142 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

52 Metascore

When Captain James Hook kidnaps his children, an adult Peter Pan must return to Neverland and reclaim his youthful spirit in order to challenge his old enemy.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins

Votes: 273,395 | Gross: $119.65M

For every person who says their kids were bored, another says they were just fine. As for me, I love the faux-Technicolor/theatrical aesthetics, the two leads and even the core story of rediscovering your inner child.

5. The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)

R | 110 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller

46 Metascore

A bridge engineer and an experienced old hunter begin a hunt for two lions after they start attacking local construction workers.

Director: Stephen Hopkins | Stars: Michael Douglas, Val Kilmer, Tom Wilkinson, John Kani

Votes: 66,005 | Gross: $38.62M

A great contradiction of a film, 'The Ghost and The Darkness'' main gimmick, killer lions, lack any real menace or scares. And yet somehow, the film still manages to hold my attention.

This is thanks in part to lush production values with some gorgeous shots of the African savannah, Jerry Goldsmith' thrilling and pounding score, and pretty decent chemistry and performances from its two leads.

6. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)

R | 123 min | Drama, Horror, Romance

49 Metascore

When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Hulce

Votes: 59,364 | Gross: $22.01M

Melodramatic for sure, but fast paced and rather beautifully mounted. Among a fairly strong cast, DeNiro is the gem; a very underrated 'Monster', balancing the line between menace and sympathy.

Also, it easily has one of the most gorgeous and vibrant horror scores ever composed. Patrick Doyle is a true mast.

7. Speed Racer (2008)

PG | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

37 Metascore

Young driver, Speed Racer, aspires to be champion of the racing world with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5 automobile.

Directors: Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski | Stars: Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci, Nicholas Elia

Votes: 78,488 | Gross: $43.95M

This is about as close to a live-action version of a 60s cartoon as you'll get, both in its pros and cons: exuberant visuals, some great racing sequences and a game cast are offset by a limited, one note story, archetypical characters with the bare basics of character and some really forced commentary on the underhanded nature of the automobile & racing business.

8. The Lone Ranger (2013)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

37 Metascore

Native American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 244,579 | Gross: $89.30M

There is so much I have to say about how wrongly maligned this film was. However, for that, I already have this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlfo5rwlL1c

It says all I need to, and at great length too.

9. The Gingerbread Man (1998)

R | 114 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

65 Metascore

A lawyer uses his power to help his lover put her father behind bars, but when he escapes, they are all in danger.

Director: Robert Altman | Stars: Kenneth Branagh, Embeth Davidtz, Robert Downey Jr., Daryl Hannah

Votes: 11,685 | Gross: $1.53M

Among Robert Altman's most underrated films, I really, really dig this sleazy, sweaty and atmospheric tale of deceit and manipulation in the Deep South.

10. Wayne's World 2 (1993)

PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Music

60 Metascore

The inseparable duo try to organize a rock concert while Wayne must fend off a record producer who has an eye for his girlfriend.

Director: Stephen Surjik | Stars: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Christopher Walken, Tia Carrere

Votes: 88,171 | Gross: $48.20M

Sure, it's not as fresh or zany as last time, but it still has more than a handful of hearty laughs to offer.

11. Johnny Dangerously (1984)

PG-13 | 90 min | Comedy, Crime

54 Metascore

Set in the 1930s, an honest, good-hearted man is forced to turn to a life of crime to finance his neurotic mother's sky-rocketing medical bills.

Director: Amy Heckerling | Stars: Michael Keaton, Joe Piscopo, Marilu Henner, Maureen Stapleton

Votes: 16,415

One of the more forgotten 80s spoof films, this work both as a solid parody of classic gangster films and all their melodrama, as well as a decent standalone comedy about a wacky crime racket.

12. King Solomon's Mines (1985)

PG-13 | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

29 Metascore

Fortune hunter Allan Quatermain teams up with a resourceful woman to help her find her missing father lost in the wilds of 1900s Africa while being pursued by hostile tribes and a rival German explorer.

Director: J. Lee Thompson | Stars: Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone, Herbert Lom, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 14,925 | Gross: $15.06M

A quasi Indy knock off-spoof, this is 80s adventure cheese at its finest. And the cast and score aren't half bad, actually.

13. Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986)

PG | 99 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

Allan Quatermain once again teams up with Jesse Huston where the discovery of a mysterious old gold piece sends Quatermain looking for his long-lost brother, missing in the wilds of Africa after seeking a lost white race.

Director: Gary Nelson | Stars: Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone, James Earl Jones, Henry Silva

Votes: 10,386 | Gross: $3.75M

Just more of the same. Perhaps even tackier and goofier.

14. W.C. Fields and Me (1976)

PG | 111 min | Biography, Drama

One of comedies true originals - the master of wit and good, mean fun, the curmudgeonly, and very original, the legendary W.C. Fields' is wonderfully portrayed by Rod Steiger in this off-beat biopic.

Director: Arthur Hiller | Stars: Rod Steiger, Valerie Perrine, John Marley, Jack Cassidy

Votes: 509

Rare, but if you can get it, it's an amusing and dark little tale of the private life of a famous comedian and his troubled love.

15. The Three Musketeers (1993)

PG | 105 min | Action, Adventure, Romance

43 Metascore

France, 1625: Young d'Artagnan heads to Paris to join the Musketeers but the evil cardinal has disbanded them - save 3. He meets the 3, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and joins them on their quest to save the king and country.

Director: Stephen Herek | Stars: Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt

Votes: 59,408 | Gross: $53.90M

Sure it may be watered down from Dumas' classic, but at least it has a charm to it and a likeable cast. And it's not full of video-game-y junk like the 2011 version.

16. Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

PG-13 | 104 min | Adventure, Comedy, Musical

44 Metascore

A spoof of Robin Hood in general, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) in particular.

Director: Mel Brooks | Stars: Cary Elwes, Richard Lewis, Roger Rees, Amy Yasbeck

Votes: 136,962 | Gross: $35.74M

Sort of a critics vs. audiences affair, Robin Hood is one of the less well received yet fondly remembered of Brooks' many offerings. And why not? It's got more than few hearty chuckles in it.

17. Wild Bill (1995)

R | 98 min | Action, Biography, Drama

51 Metascore

The early career of legendary lawman Wild Bill Hickock is telescoped and culminates in his relocation in Deadwood and a reunion with Calamity Jane.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Ellen Barkin, John Hurt, Diane Lane

Votes: 7,883 | Gross: $2.17M

Sure, some of it plays like an Oliver Stone wannabe with the tinted flashbacks, but it's short and has a terrific cast at its disposal. A neat little curio to see the roots of 'Deadwood', which Walter Hill also had a hand in.

18. Hannibal (2001)

R | 131 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

57 Metascore

Living in exile, Dr. Hannibal Lecter tries to reconnect with now disgraced F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling, and finds himself a target for revenge from a powerful victim.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Ray Liotta

Votes: 293,344 | Gross: $165.09M

It's not trying to be an intense thriller like Silence. It's instead a grand guignol, indulgent farce, with one of Hans Zimmer's most elegant and operatic scores to match.

19. The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

PG-13 | 143 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

40 Metascore

A young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House.

Director: Joel Schumacher | Stars: Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson

Votes: 130,745 | Gross: $51.27M

'Twilight' makes you really appreciate how much this still at least felt like the classic story it drew from. Sure, some of the lovey-dovey is hokey, but good songs and some atmospheric direction still matter.

20. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

31 Metascore

In the Far East, Alex O'Connell, the son of famed mummy fighters Rick and Evy O'Connell, unearths the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin -- a shape-shifting entity cursed by a witch centuries ago.

Director: Rob Cohen | Stars: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, Michelle Yeoh

Votes: 170,756 | Gross: $102.49M

The weakest and silliest of the Sommers trilogy, 'Dragon Emperor' still makes for some slick, if nonsensical, summer fun. The final battle near the Great Wall is of special note.

21. King Kong (1976)

PG | 134 min | Adventure, Horror

61 Metascore

A petroleum exploration expedition comes to an isolated island and encounters a colossal giant gorilla.

Director: John Guillermin | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, Jessica Lange, John Randolph

Votes: 35,584 | Gross: $52.61M

It's written by the same man who created the 60s Batman series, and stars The Dude. Need I say more?

22. Congo (1995)

PG-13 | 109 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

24 Metascore

When an expedition to the African Congo ends in disaster, a new team is assembled to find out what went wrong.

Director: Frank Marshall | Stars: Laura Linney, Tim Curry, Dylan Walsh, Ernie Hudson

Votes: 48,701 | Gross: $81.02M

One of the great cheesefests of the 90s, Congo manages to be a capable action film and a totally nonsensical slice of wacky sci-fi/adventure, sesame cake and all!

23. Revolution (1985)

PG | 126 min | Adventure, Drama, History

22 Metascore

A trapper and his young son get pulled into the American revolution early as unwilling participants and remain involved through to the end.

Director: Hugh Hudson | Stars: Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland, Nastassja Kinski, Joan Plowright

Votes: 7,557 | Gross: $0.36M

One that has improved with age, 'Revolution' may be a little fragmented, but it still has a grand sense of scope, beautiful music, and solid performances. If you can, get the double pack with the 'Revisited Cut'.

24. Far and Away (1992)

PG-13 | 140 min | Adventure, Drama, Romance

49 Metascore

A young Irish couple flee to the States, but subsequently struggle to obtain land and prosper freely.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky

Votes: 68,364 | Gross: $58.88M

Melodramatic and overblown to be sure, but it's still quite a feat. It's vast in scale, varied and despite the accents, the performances still bring in the emotions.

25. Heaven's Gate (1980)

R | 219 min | Adventure, Drama, Western

57 Metascore

During the Johnson County War in 1890 Wyoming, a sheriff born into wealth does his best to protect immigrant farmers from rich cattle interests.

Director: Michael Cimino | Stars: Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston

Votes: 17,165 | Gross: $3.48M

Forget all of the bad history and butchered cuts issued by MGM over the years, get the new 'Restored' Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, and experience an ambitious epic that has seldom since been repeated in cinema.

26. Sabrina (1995)

PG | 127 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

56 Metascore

An ugly duckling having undergone a remarkable change, still harbors feelings for her crush: a carefree playboy, but not before his business-focused brother has something to say about it.

Director: Sydney Pollack | Stars: Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond, Greg Kinnear, Nancy Marchand

Votes: 44,471 | Gross: $53.67M

Julia Ormond makes this film, exuding a charm that is very enticing. A snazzy score by John Williams also lends a hand.

27. Spaceballs (1987)

PG | 96 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

46 Metascore

A star-pilot for hire and his trusty sidekick must come to the rescue of a princess and save Planet Druidia from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs.

Director: Mel Brooks | Stars: Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman

Votes: 206,728 | Gross: $38.12M

Another critics vs. audience scenario, is it any wonder so many have a fondness for this wild and wacky spoof of big 80s sci-fi?

28. Dragnet (1987)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Crime, Mystery

62 Metascore

The equally strait-laced and "by-the-book" nephew of Joe Friday must work with his more laid-back partner to solve a mystery.

Director: Tom Mankiewicz | Stars: Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Christopher Plummer, Harry Morgan

Votes: 37,465 | Gross: $57.39M

Not one of Ackyrod's most famous films, Dragnet is still a rather chuckle-some action comedy, with strong and likeable leads in Dan and Tom.

29. Holy Man (1998)

PG | 114 min | Comedy, Drama

42 Metascore

An over-the-top television evangelist finds a way to turn television home shopping into a religious experience, and takes America by storm.

Director: Stephen Herek | Stars: Eddie Murphy, Jeff Goldblum, Kelly Preston, Robert Loggia

Votes: 20,947 | Gross: $12.07M

It's odd: I tend to like Murphy in his more disliked comedies. Sure, the opening is a little sloppy, but enough giggles here and there, and even some legitimately touching moments with G still make it worthwhile.

30. Harlem Nights (1989)

R | 116 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

16 Metascore

During the 1930s, a New York City illegal gambling house owner and his associates must deal with strong competition, gangsters, and corrupt cops in order to stay in business.

Director: Eddie Murphy | Stars: Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Danny Aiello

Votes: 24,810 | Gross: $60.86M

Eddie Murphy slickly directs this foul mouthed period comedy. Well produced, performed and though a little cheap with gags, at least we are spared the likes of bowels gags.

31. City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994)

PG-13 | 116 min | Comedy, Western

43 Metascore

One year after their first adventure, Mitch Robbins and his friends discover a treasure map that belonged to their late trail guide Curly and they set out to discover its secrets.

Director: Paul Weiland | Stars: Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniel Stern, Jon Lovitz

Votes: 20,774 | Gross: $43.62M

Honestly, even if its plot does kinda unravel by the end, I felt there were enough gut laughs to keep me going. The opening is honestly funnier than the first film.

32. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

PG-13 | 169 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

50 Metascore

Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, find Jack Sparrow, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush

Votes: 694,058 | Gross: $309.42M

An underrated sequel (and superior to DMC), 'World's End' is a very fun epic swashbuckler. Boasting some of the most inventive action to date, including a phenomenal whirlpool battle, and a game cast having an absolute ball.

As for the oft-lambasted plot, I understood it perfectly. Was a little too convoluted and overwritten? Yes, but certainly not confusing by any stretch of the imagination.

33. Batman Forever (1995)

PG-13 | 121 min | Action, Adventure

54 Metascore

Batman must battle former district attorney Harvey Dent, who is now Two-Face and Edward Nygma, The Riddler with help from an amorous psychologist and a young circus acrobat who becomes his sidekick, Robin.

Director: Joel Schumacher | Stars: Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman

Votes: 266,704 | Gross: $184.03M

Basically a crossed adaptation of both 60s Batman and Batman TAS, 'Forever' is one of the more enjoyable threequels out there. Jim Carrey steals the show.

34. Planet of the Apes (2001)

PG-13 | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

In 2029, an Air Force astronaut crash-lands on a mysterious planet where evolved, talking apes dominate a race of primitive humans.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan

Votes: 229,413 | Gross: $180.01M

While it may lack the high concepts of the original, Burton's re-imagining still offers a decent thrill ride, thanks to a strong supporting cast, including a scene stealing team of Roth and Clarke-Duncan, some great set designs and effects that create a genuine world, and a tense score from Elfman.

However, there is no getting around the bland lead in Wahlberg, the off-wire work that makes the apes fly instead of jump, and a conceptually intriguing yet poorly presented ending twist. Still, not horrible.

35. Toys (1992)

PG-13 | 118 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

40 Metascore

When Lieutenant General Leland Zevo (Sir Michael Gambon) inherits a toymaking company and begins making war toys, his employees band together to stop him before he ruins the name of Zevo Toys forever.

Director: Barry Levinson | Stars: Robin Williams, Michael Gambon, Joan Cusack, Robin Wright

Votes: 33,648 | Gross: $21.45M

A case of 'wrong place, wrong time', Levinson odd little film is surprisingly forward thinking about the desensitisation of youth and the dehumanisation of war. However, some tonal indecisions and a laggy climax do deflate things.

36. The Three Stooges (2012)

PG | 92 min | Comedy, Family

56 Metascore

While trying to save their childhood orphanage, Moe, Larry, and Curly inadvertently stumble into a murder plot and wind up starring in a reality television show.

Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly | Stars: Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Sasso, Jane Lynch

Votes: 33,206 | Gross: $44.34M

While the Farrelly Brothers may have seen better days, their take on the iconic comic trio is better than it could've or should've been. 'Three Stooges' may not be as memorable or charming as the originals shorts, but it still has a number of great little gags and nods that reminds us of a time gone by when humour was simpler

37. Fierce Creatures (1997)

PG-13 | 93 min | Comedy

62 Metascore

Zookeepers struggle to deal with the policies of changing directors.

Directors: Robert Young, Fred Schepisi | Stars: John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin

Votes: 25,644 | Gross: $9.38M

Not as funny as 'Wanda' perhaps, but a game cast and the naturally comic possibilities of a whole zoo still get mileage.

38. At Long Last Love (1975)

G | 118 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance

Four socialite old friends unexpectedly clash, and switch partners during a party and attempt to make each other jealous.

Director: Peter Bogdanovich | Stars: Burt Reynolds, Cybill Shepherd, Madeline Kahn, Duilio Del Prete

Votes: 1,400 | Gross: $3.27M

It may be indulgent, a little slow between songs and isn't as witty as its script thinks it is, but Bogdanovich's 30s musical throwback still manages to be a barrel of fun. This is partially thanks to the cast, including the late great Madeline Kahn, who are not half bad at singing and give their characters more likability beyond their obvious 30s stereotypes.

The sets and costumes, all done in sleek blacks and whites, look really good and achieve that 'black & white in colour' look, and most of all, the songs by the legendary Cole Porter are still the same quality material, loaded with memorable lyrics and double entendres. 'Well did you Evah?' especially being the film's most vibrant and funniest song.

39. The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975)

PG | 91 min | Comedy, Crime, Music

The younger brother of the consulting detective tries to steal Sherlock's glory by solving an important case assisted by an eccentric Scotland Yard detective and a lovely but suspicious actress.

Director: Gene Wilder | Stars: Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Dom DeLuise

Votes: 7,312

Rather underrated, I found this to be a rather amusing little spin on the oft-told Holmes tropes. The dynamite trio of Wilder, Feldman and Kahn are the icing on the comedy cake.

40. The World's Greatest Lover (1977)

PG | 89 min | Comedy

A neurotic baker travels to Hollywood to attend a talent search for an actor to rival the great Valentino. Although not an actor, through blind luck he succeeds, to a certain degree.

Director: Gene Wilder | Stars: Gene Wilder, Carol Kane, Dom DeLuise, Fritz Feld

Votes: 2,215 | Gross: $21.58M

Not among Gene's best work, but far from his worst. World's Greatest Lover is just an uneven comedy that sums up the excesses of 70s comedies. The plot, in short, is about a neurotic baker who goes with his wife to Hollywood to screen test for a new film. However, his wife is obsessed with star Rudolph Valentino, and decides to chase after him, and well, mishaps ensue. Production values and score by underrated master John Morris recreate 20s Hollywood, and the actors are game, with Dom Deluise in fine form as the cartoonish studio boss.

41. Curly Sue (1991)

PG | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

A homeless man and his young companion, who survive by conning people, meet a woman who may need them even more than they need her.

Director: John Hughes | Stars: Jim Belushi, Kelly Lynch, Alisan Porter, John Getz

Votes: 23,245 | Gross: $33.69M

Maybe a little too sweet and fluffy for its own good, the last directed film of John Hughes is still warming and enjoyable, mainly due to the titular young girl, who makes for a vibrant and colourful character without being annoying or grating.

42. The Spirit (2008)

PG-13 | 103 min | Action, Crime, Fantasy

30 Metascore

Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City.

Director: Frank Miller | Stars: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King

Votes: 62,853 | Gross: $19.78M

Mismarketed as the next 'Sin City', Miller's take on the iconic comic has more in common with Looney Tunes than gritty crime drama, satirizing a lot of the cliches and oddities of comic books and their films versions.

A game cast playing up their archetypes, with Jackson being his all time loudest and over the top, gorgeous visuals that create a stylized noir look and David Newman's intense, bombastic score, that feels like the great Batman score Elfman never wrote, meld together for a slice of indulgent fun.

43. Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975)

G | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

Doc and the Amazing Five battle Captain Seas and "the green death" for control of a fabulous resource.

Director: Michael Anderson | Stars: Ron Ely, Paul Gleason, William Lucking, Michael Miller

Votes: 2,147

While it will probably pale next to Shane Black's upcoming take, this 70s version of the pulp's Bronze genius is still cheesy fun. However, said cheese, including weird sight gags, lanky effects and a goofy theme song, will grate on some. Still, 60s Batman fans will get into it.

44. Van Helsing (2004)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

35 Metascore

The famed monster hunter is sent to Transylvania to stop Count Dracula, who is using Dr. Frankenstein's research and a werewolf for nefarious purposes.

Director: Stephen Sommers | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, Richard Roxburgh, Shuler Hensley

Votes: 284,859 | Gross: $120.18M

Unashamedly cornball-ish and silly, Van Helsing is essential a big budget 80s monster mash, complete with hysterically cheesy dialogue and one liners, effects galore (that combine Universal and Hammer sensibilities and aesthetics) and plenty of ridiculous but well-shot action sequences.

45. The Brothers Grimm (2005)

PG-13 | 118 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

51 Metascore

Will and Jake Grimm are traveling con-artists who encounter a genuine fairy-tale curse which requires true courage instead of their usual bogus exorcisms.

Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Monica Bellucci, Petr Ratimec

Votes: 126,306 | Gross: $37.92M

Not one of Gilliam's strongest, but still unmistakeably his style. Darkly comic with storybook visuals and some solid action.

46. Ghost Rider (2007)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

35 Metascore

When motorcycle rider Johnny Blaze sells his soul to the Devil to save his father's life, he is transformed into the Ghost Rider, the Devil's own bounty hunter, and is sent to hunt down sinners.

Director: Mark Steven Johnson | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott, Matt Long

Votes: 252,407 | Gross: $115.80M

One of the best 'bad' films of recent times, GR is silly, preposterous and super cheesy. And god dammit, I LOVE IT! (It also helps that it has good action, effects and an excellent score by the much underrated Christopher Young, mixing action, Western and mythical all in one fine auditory package.

47. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

More of the same, only less lovey-dovey and more action. Yes please!

An Irish bomber escapes from prison and targets a member of the Boston bomb squad.

Director: Stephen Hopkins | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Suzy Amis, Lloyd Bridges

Forgotten 90s thriller with two strong leads and plenty of suspenseful bomb sequences.

49. Terminal Velocity (1994)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Mystery, Romance

Director: Deran Sarafian | Stars: Charlie Sheen, Nastassja Kinski, James Gandolfini, Christopher McDonald

Votes: 14,659 | Gross: $16.48M

This '94 actioner offers a perfectly watchable distraction for an afternoon. This is mainly due to plenty of great aerial sequences, including a really enthralling finale involving a car drop, as well as two competent and charismatic leads in Sheen and Kinski as hot head diver and secret agent respectively.

50. Dark Shadows (2012)

PG-13 | 113 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

55 Metascore

An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter

Votes: 280,587 | Gross: $79.73M

Burton's horror-comedy is many things, and isn't that bad at any. Talented cast, including a wonderfully straight-faced Pfieffer and smoking Green, alongside impressive gothic sets that show that money has been spent. Add a refreshingly zany, 70s-infused score from Elfman, and you have a film that never has a dull moment.

51. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

R | 105 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror

42 Metascore

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.

Director: Timur Bekmambetov | Stars: Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie

Votes: 161,712 | Gross: $37.52M

Somehow, by being a little more serious than most of these alternate history mashups, ALVH ends up feeling the more engaging and credible for it. Good cast, especially Ben Walker as a very capable action star and actor, alongside some really well choreographed fights with careful use of slow-mo, especially the final train battle,

52. RoboCop (2014)

PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Crime, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

In 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy, a loving husband, father and good cop, is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.

Director: José Padilha | Stars: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish

Votes: 239,728 | Gross: $58.61M

While it may not be as sleek or actively satirical as the original, this 2014 take stands well enough on its own. This is supported by solid performances across the board, as well as some dynamic action and some jabs at the mechanization of justice & security

53. Death Becomes Her (1992)

PG-13 | 104 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

56 Metascore

When a fading actress learns of an immortality treatment, she sees it as a way to outdo her long-time rival.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn, Isabella Rossellini

Votes: 131,480 | Gross: $58.42M

At times a little too maverick, Zemeckis still delivers a darkly fun time. Even when the script indulges, writer David Koepp sprinkles enough chuckles in his script, aided by our charismatic main duo. Streep and Hawn really running with their supernatural catfight for all it's worth, and it is a treat, while Willis, against type, whimpers in the corner.

54. Monkeybone (2001)

PG-13 | 93 min | Comedy, Fantasy

40 Metascore

In a coma, a cartoonist finds himself trapped within his own underground creation and must find a way to get back, while racing against his popular but treacherous character, Monkeybone.

Director: Henry Selick | Stars: Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, John Turturro, Chris Kattan

Votes: 19,207 | Gross: $5.41M

Crass? Yes. Wacky? Yes. Wild? Yes. Why is that a problem, especially armed with Selick's amazing stop motion?

55. Flatliners (1990)

R | 115 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

Five medical students experiment with "near death" experiences, until the dark consequences of past tragedies begin to jeopardize their lives.

Director: Joel Schumacher | Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin

Votes: 93,492 | Gross: $61.49M

Joel Schumacher often gets a bad rap, but once upon the time, this wasn''t the case. Lost Boys, Falling Down and this attest to his skills. Plenty of atmosphere, a stellar cast of the then young creme de la creme, and a fine balance between goreless horror and genuine personal drama.

56. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

PG | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

54 Metascore

When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Jon Daly, Kathryn Hahn

Votes: 341,175 | Gross: $58.24M

One of my favourites of 2013, Stiller's 'Mitty' is the sort of film that is rare nowadays; a feel good epic. Stiller and Whig make fine and charming leads while Adam Scott is a hammily fun villain as the takeover manager. On top of that, there's ear and eye candy aplenty, as well as a touching message about living life to the full.

57. Transcendence (I) (2014)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

42 Metascore

A scientist's drive for artificial intelligence takes on dangerous implications when his own consciousness is uploaded into one such program.

Director: Wally Pfister | Stars: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy

Votes: 238,938 | Gross: $23.02M

An Interesting & ambitious cinematic conundrum, 'Transcendence' has great ideas but clunky execution, especially during a rushed first act. However, its second part takes a breath and allows its concepts and questions to bloom, and it won me over.

58. The Power of One (1992)

PG-13 | 127 min | Drama, Sport

40 Metascore

An English boy, living in Africa during World War II, through his boxing prowess, becomes a symbol of hope, in a time of war.

Director: John G. Avildsen | Stars: Stephen Dorff, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Morgan Freeman, Nomadlozi Kubheka

Votes: 10,701 | Gross: $2.83M

Despite some info-dumping narration and unresolved plot threads, The Power of One makes for gripping emotional entertainment. Great performances, a stirring African score by Hans Zimmer and dashes of bloody viscerality utterly entrance.

59. City of Joy (1992)

PG-13 | 132 min | Drama

An American doctor, a British nurse, and an illiterate Indian farmer unite to transform a Calcutta ghetto in this uplifting, inspirational movie starring Patrick Swayze and Pauline Collins.

Director: Roland Joffé | Stars: Patrick Swayze, Pauline Collins, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi

Votes: 5,629 | Gross: $14.68M

This last hurrah from the once great Joffe is still a very, very fine drama. Grade-A performances, especially Puri as a struggling father, a stirring yet uplifting score by the always great Morricone, and careful splashes of viscerality and grit elevate this production.

60. Casa de mi Padre (2012)

R | 84 min | Comedy, Western

52 Metascore

Scheming to save their father's ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord.

Director: Matt Piedmont | Stars: Will Ferrell, Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Nick Offerman

Votes: 21,623 | Gross: $5.90M

More of a niche comedy than broad yuckfest, 'Casa de mi Padre' relishes in the melodrama and cheese of over-the-top Hispanic soaps. Yes, its story is thin, its dialogue woeful and its presentation overblown, but that's how a lot of these shows actually are, and for that, it's a fitting and joyous romp.

61. The Edge (1997)

R | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

66 Metascore

An intellectual billionaire and two other men struggle to band together and survive after getting stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with a blood-thirsty Kodiak Bear hunting them down.

Director: Lee Tamahori | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Elle Macpherson, Harold Perrineau

Votes: 79,132 | Gross: $27.78M

Despite Mamet's brand of humour clashing against the tension, 'The Edge' is a fairly effective survival thriller, and not just a big budget creature feature as marketing would imply.

62. 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)

R | 102 min | Action, Drama

48 Metascore

Greek general Themistocles of Athens leads the naval charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Director: Noam Murro | Stars: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson

Votes: 316,069 | Gross: $106.58M

Not as fresh or startling as before, 'Rise' is more of the same visceral, over the top macho violence. Of course, the oft-imitated visual style, though now less artistic slow-mo usage, as well as a more generic percussion heavy score than before, do leaves things a tad deflated. Still, it delivers on action and Green scene-chewing.

63. 47 Ronin (2013)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy

28 Metascore

A band of samurai sets out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun.

Director: Carl Rinsch | Stars: Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kô Shibasaki, Tadanobu Asano

Votes: 171,258 | Gross: $38.36M

A fascinating curio of how movie studios think,´47 Ronin´still packs enough whizz bang and genuinely well crafted action to carry it over its generic plotting and one note characters.

64. R.I.P.D. (2013)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

25 Metascore

A cop killed by his own partner joins RIPD, an afterlife law enforcement department working to apprehend various monsters disguised as humans living on earth, and gets paired up with a smart-mouthed veteran.

Director: Robert Schwentke | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin Bacon

Votes: 143,649 | Gross: $33.62M

Sure, it's a MIB clone, and it may have some tacky effects, but honestly, the energy of our leads, plus well filmed action and some genuine humorous gags did keep it going.

65. Beauty and the Beast (2014)

PG-13 | 112 min | Drama, Family, Fantasy

39 Metascore

An unexpected romance blooms after the the youngest daughter of a merchant who has fallen on hard times offers herself to the mysterious beast to which her father has become indebted.

Director: Christophe Gans | Stars: Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, André Dussollier, Eduardo Noriega

Votes: 22,445

While at times a little thin on logic and even a tad pandery, Gans still assembles a more often than not magically fairytale. This is aided by sumptuous direction, taking cues from 19th century watercolours, and a commanding Cassel as the Beast.

66. Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

R | 100 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

27 Metascore

A Caribbean vampire seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.

Director: Wes Craven | Stars: Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison

Votes: 25,119 | Gross: $19.75M

Not among Murphy's nest, but enough chuckles and Gothic styling to carry it.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Liza Minnelli, Robert De Niro, Lionel Stander, Barry Primus

Votes: 21,904 | Gross: $16.40M

It's just fascinating to see two polar opposites, the precision and detail of a 40s musical, with improv working class drama, be fused together. Two solid leads and a great finale help out.

PG | 111 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

Director: Joe Wright | Stars: Levi Miller, Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara

Votes: 67,173 | Gross: $35.09M

Narratively lacking (plame the test audiences), but offers lots of steampunk fun and a delightful Hugh Jackman.

69. Daisy Miller (1974)

In this comedy of manners, Frederick Winterbourne tries to figure out the bright and bubbly Daisy Miller, only to be helped and hindered by false judgments from their fellow friends.

Director: Peter Bogdanovich | Stars: Cybill Shepherd, Barry Brown, Cloris Leachman, Mildred Natwick

Surprisingly cheeky and bubbly for a period piece, it's a short but fun affair with a game cast and great production values.

Director: Howard Deutch | Stars: Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Ann-Margret, Sophia Loren

Votes: 29,751 | Gross: $71.52M

It may be repeating the same act as the first, but the first was fun, and so is this. Lemmon and Matthau's chemistry helps a lot too.

Ambitious to a fault, it still delivers the key setpieces.

72. Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

34 Metascore

Alice is appointed to save her beloved Mad Hatter from deadly grief by travelling back to the past, but this means fatally harming Time himself, the noble clockwork man with the device needed to save the Hatter's family from the Red Queen.

Director: James Bobin | Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway

Votes: 122,366 | Gross: $77.04M

A fair improvement from the original in that it has that one thing Burton's film didn't: imagination. Yes, it still has squat to do with the actual text, but it's much closer to the spirit of what a Wonderland film should be. It's bright, colourful, has fun with the different worlds of Underland and Time and their weird inhabitants and, and I can't believe I'm saying this... Alice has something resembling a personality.

73. Around the World in 80 Days (2004)

PG | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

Director: Frank Coraci | Stars: Jackie Chan, Steve Coogan, Jim Broadbent, Kathy Bates

Votes: 94,798 | Gross: $24.01M

Verne's 80 Days was one of my favourite childhood stories, and I hated this version way back when for deviating. Now, I can see it as a breezy romp that, while lacking in subtlety or a fleshed out narrative, compensates with a game cast and some terrific comic setpieces conjured up by Chan.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou

Not as ambitious or nuanced as Nashvile, this shelved Altman dramedy still packs some good laughs and commentary on the politicisation of health foods.
