When I was a teenager, the Boy Scout troop that I was a member of consisted of nearly 25 scouts. We had a few older scouts whom the rest of the younger scouts looked up to, and during our weekend camping trips the seniors made every effort to scare the beejezus out of us youngsters with ludicrous tales of ghosts or killers hiding out in the woods. These stories were often woven around a campfire in the late hours of the evening when we were all seemingly vulnerable. During the summer of 1980, Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th was doing well at the box office, so I was already aware of these “murderers in the woods”-themed films. This didn’t make it any easier for us to go on camping trips! The success of Friday the 13th gave birth to countless carbon copies of young adults-being-stalked-in-the-woods films.

“Look, the boogeyman can only come out on Halloween night, right?”
Sorry, Laurie, but this year Halloween came early. On September 23rd, horror fans near and far—myself included—rejoiced when Shout Factory / Scream Factory released a 10-disc (or 15-disc if you threw down the extra cash for the Deluxe Edition) Blu-ray box set containing every film in the Halloween franchise along with a wide array of bonus features. It’s time to lock your doors and hold on tight as I guide you through the night he came home… with me.
Before digging into the discs themselves, it is impossible not to acknowledge the beauty of the box that houses the discs. On one side, there is the classic jack-o-lantern which has become iconic to the Halloween franchise.
What is really worth noting is the Michael Myers artwork on the two opposite sides of the box.

John Carpenter seems to be at odds with what he loves and what is expected of him. Early in his career, Carpenter made a science fiction film (Dark Star), a siege picture (Assault on Precinct 13), and then Halloween.
He speaks freely of his love of the science fiction genre, yet seemed to have been pushed into the horror realm because of Halloween, where he has made quite a name for himself. Prince of Darkness, is an interesting blend of elements of sci-fi and horror, with some lofty academic ideas to propel the characters through this macrocosmic drama.
Carpenter favorite Donald Pleasence, simply billed here as “Priest,” finds a key after the death of a colleague, which leads him to an ancient evil trapped in the basement of an old church. In this instance, “evil” has taken the form of a swirling green mass in a glass container. In an attempt to stop an impending,...

I hope you don’t mind a little self-promotion, because as each one of these new John Carpenter titles is released to Blu-Ray, I’m going to have to remind you that in 2012, we here at The Liberal Dead/Dead Air Podcast recorded a year long John Carpenter Retrospective podcast series, examining in-depth, each of Carpenter’s films, and how each film affected his career as one of the most prolific genre filmmakers in cinematic history. It was a tremendous undertaking, and it would have been helpful if all of these bad ass collector’s edition Blu-Rays were made available for us to research. That’s okay, though. All of us enjoy gaining knowledge the old fashioned way, and now with the release of some of his films on Blu-Ray this year, it gives us an excuse to spread around the old episodes. Despite the fact that it was almost...

Swamp Thing is based on the popular DC Comics character and couldn’t be any more different than Craven’s previous film, Deadly Blessing. A departure into science fiction for the horror director and one of Adrienne Barbeau’s early genre films, it’s a Beauty and the Beast romance with some industrial sabotage thrown in for good measure. Just released to Blu-ray / DVD by Scream Factory, Swamp Thing is a great blast of nostalgia for kids of the 1980’s.
Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) has been holed up in the swamps with his sister (Nannette Brown), working on a way to hybridize animal and plant DNA in an attempt solve the world’s hunger problems. Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) enters the picture as a government agent sent to investigate and report on his progress. The two quickly strike up a relationship, but their time together is interrupted when a...

I really hate the bad rap that Halloween III gets. I mean, it’s a stinker reputation. People are either supremely dismissive or they appreciate it for what it is – a completely underrated film with a downer of an ending and trying something new when it appears that it seemed to be heading the way of franchise, and as we undoubtedly know, it has.
The idea being that Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted something new, after all an unstoppable killer would become old hat after a while. And so, they decided to hand the reins over to the talented Tommy Lee Wallace and this is what he produced. And merciful me, it sunk and it sunk badly. Does this mean it’s a bad film? Not at all. It’s...

Swamp Thing (1982) is a peculiar entry in the Wes Craven canon. For a director who cut his teeth in porn (most directors began their careers as editors in this field in the early 1970s) and directed such fare as The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Swamp Thing is a much gentler film. One of the few PG-rated entries to his credit, it was made just a few years prior to his very own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the movie that turned the horror film industry on its ear with the introduction of Fred Krueger and which spawned one of the most successful franchises in the genre.
Released on Friday, February 19, 1982 by the late Joseph E. Levine’s long-defunct Embassy Pictures, Swamp Thing is a film version of the DC Comic that was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Set in...

Monster movies had seen their heyday come and go by the time Joe Dante made The Howling in 1981 and it seemed as if everyone had seen everything. However, Dante manages to create a unique entry in the werewolf movie canon with a murder mystery with supernatural creatures in it. The Howling still stands as one of the most inventive and fun horror films from the 1980′s and this stacked to the rafters Blu-ray from Scream Factory is a must have.

The Dungeon is rising like a dark phoenix with the new and incredible team of "Apocalypse" Amy Lynes and Hollywood F/X Master, Thomas Surprenant! Show regulars Barb and Jess will always be a piece of puzzle, but the new team is already going strong after their debut! Listen up!
This week on the Dungeon we had a real, in-depth, and at most times, hilarious conversation with the "Monster Man" of the hour, Cleve Hall. Along with Cleve were also visited by his equally and amazingly talented "mini-me", the gore-geous Constance Hall! The conversation was knock down, drag out, and uncensored ... and when I say uncensored? Oh, my little monsters, you are going to have to hear it for yourselves!
Be sure to join my team and I next week when we have a chat with horror insider and super fan, Sean Clark! Hmm ... maybe Creepy will enter The Dungeon one day?...

Every March for the last two years I have made my annual pilgrimage to Indianapolis for the Horrorhound Convention. I have come to expect several things from this event: A killer guest lineup, tons of cool stuff to buy, and for the event to be even bigger than the year before. After Dario Argento’s cancellation as headliner, my friend that usually accompanies me to the event decided not to go and many people on the message boards were ringing with the same sentiment. This made me worried that this year may not live up to the previous two. Read more…
This year was every bit as good as last year and much more. Last year, one of the biggest complaints attendees expressed was that the convention center was too crowded. No one can argue that this was a major concern as the line to enter the vendor room was...

We don't want to bore you with a long intro but a certain amount of knowledge is needed for a proper introduction for the guys at Rabbit in Red Radio. HorrorBid is constantly evolving and one great thing that has happened over the few years that we've been doing this is the outpouring of fan support. We obviously touched a nerve and you guys in the community and beyond have been unbelievable. With that being said, we have received countless, and I mean countless pitches over the past year or so to do a talk radio...

It's hard to imagine a world of horror without the classic 1978 film Halloween. John Carpenter captured the magic and essence of both the holiday and the epitome of slasher films on the low budget mega hit. With other films such as Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street getting proper documentaries it was only a matter of time that Halloween would receive its time to shine. Tonights the night...

It's hard to believe another year is in the can and we're going stronger than ever. We have a ton of stuff to be thankful for so allow us to indulge ourselves for a moment ...
Speaking for myself and, I'm sure, Jon Condit and Kw Low, my partners and fellow founding fathers of this asylum we all call home, we're thankful for all of our friends in the industry -- from press and PR to talent -- who have embraced us and let us become part of their projects to help out any way that we can.
We're thankful for our badass motherfuckin' staff, both old and new. We're thankful for the old-schoolers like Scott and Tabby Johnson, who always go above and beyond. For Nomad, who always goes the extra mile to make sure everyone's covered with the latest and taken care of at live events. For Buz and Andrew,...
