Betty White, the Emmy-winning TV star who had a remarkable later-career resurgence in films, TV commercials and the hit series “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland,” has died. She was 99.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a death investigation on the 500 block of N. Carmelina Ave. in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. White is believed to have died Thursday night at her Brentwood home.
White’s agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed her death to Variety. “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

While more attention is starting to be paid to onscreen representation in film and television, diversity among the critics who review them is still largely an invisible issue.

"Jane," now in theaters, took the top prize at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards
Perhaps if I'm too stay in the Bfca (home to the "Critic's Choice Awards") I should run for actual office within them. Why? Well, change from within. I literally never understand their decisions like awards ceremonies where there are no rules as to how large a category is or isn't. They have this same problem in their main movie awards to a small degree but their documentary competition is even more unruly/nonsensical. These awards, held last night in Brooklyn, had (pause for shuddering) 16 nominees for Best Documentary Feature but 10 nominees for Best Director and only 6 nominees for Debut Documentary and so on and so on. No rhyme or reason!
But herewith, this year's winners (links go to reviews if we've covered them). All of the feature film winners are on Oscar's long...

Amy Schumer is "overexposed." So says her doctor in the below promo for Inside Amy Schumer season four. The star of Inside Amy Schumer is coming off quite a year. Trainwreck rocked the box office, she had an HBO comedy special directed by Chris Rock, hosted Saturday Night Live, became best friends with Jennifer Lawrence, took home a Critic's Choice Award and Emmy and opened for Madonna, but that's not stopping her from returning to her Comedy Central series. "Amy, the test came back positive," the doctor says in the promo below. "I'm sorry to tell you this, but you've been overexposed…Yes, you're everywhere, magazines, this Instagram photo of you on the subway wearing a...

She's got a Golden Globe, Critic's Choice and SAG award all under belt—now there's only the Oscar left. Will Brie Larson win? More importantly (to us), what will she wear? We're only half way through red carpet season, and already the Room star has impressed both fashion critics and fans at almost every turn. Does her major wardrobe choices reflect her earnest to win the golden statue? Perhaps, but every time she delights us on the red carpet, we want her to win that much more. From just looking at her red-carpet gowns from recent past, you will notice Brie has a habit of wearing seemingly simple dresses. On closer look though, there are unexpected details to elevate and amp up the entire...

Jacob Tremblay, the 9 year-old star of Room, is this year's awards season frontrunner — not for any specific award, just for the honor of having the most fun at classy parties. And let us tell you, Jacob Tremblay has been having a lot of fun: Winning at the Critic's Choice Awards, dancing to "Uptown Funk" at afterparties, meeting Bb-8. Tremblay continued his campaign at the SAG Awards tonight. In his adorable red carpet interview (see below), he said that he had one goal for the evening: To meet Leonardo DiCaprio. Guess what, Jacob Tremblay met Leonardo DiCaprio. And that's not all, Tremblay also charmed audiences with a presenter bit with his co-star Brie Larson (who later took home a trophy for Room). "I can still remember the first time I was nominated for a SAG award," Tremblay joked. "I was only 9 years old, and I was competing against Batman." All hail...

Last year's "Stakeout" is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's low points, so I wasn't necessarily pumped for another episode that puts Jake and a second character in forced isolation. Although "9 Days" covers a lot of well-trod territory for the show — which has also already had plots about Jake and Holt working a case from Holt's house, and both Jake and Rosa trying to work through an illness or injury against their colleagues' advice — this pairing works, thanks to sharp writing and the continuing genius of freshly minted Critic's Choice Award winner Andre Braugher.Eschewing the show's usual stand-alone cold open, "9 Days" dives right in, explaining that Holt's a bit off these days because his husband, Kevin, is still away on a teaching assignment at the Sorbonne. Jake's closed all his cases (and bragged loudly enough about it that Amy...

They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, and that certainly seems to be the case for Amy Schumer and her new beau.
Schumer first introduced us to her man, Ben Hanisch, a few weeks ago in an Instagram post, and the pair have been almost inseparable since.
But on Monday, the Trainwreck star revealed she was "missing" him after having to go on tour.
"Missing these people on the road," Schumer, 34, captioned a black and white group photo in which Hanisch, 29, stands next to her.

Will Oscar voters love how obsessed with Oscar statues the SAG nominated Trumbo is? It's been an enormously busy week with precursor decisions confusing and clarifying in equal measure. Even if you don't put much stock in the Critic's Choice Awards (also known as the Bfca, an organization that includes your host) it'll be interesting to see what they come up with since ballots were due today and so many questions remain. Though the organization prides itself on Oscar predictive power (a very weird thing to pride yourself on unless you're a pundit rather than a critic) the confusing nature of the race won't make things easy on any pundit.
While I've been accused of overthinking various races often (who, me?) such is the curse of punditry and Oscar obsessiveness. Here's where I think we stand now...

I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."Singer-songwriter Smith won the 2014 Brit Critic's Choice...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
There's nothing better than watching Jimmy Fallon slap his guests on "The Tonight Show," which brings us to Slap Jack. It's like Black Jack only with slapping, and is basically an excuse for Jimmy to vent the pressure he feels from being the funniest host on late night television. This week's victim? Jason Statham.
Apparently, Allison Janney planted a kiss on James Corden at the "Critic's Choice Awards," and now things are somewhat awkward -- especially since Allison was a guest on James' show. However, Allison spoofed herself by filming a clip wherein she kisses random members of James' staff, and it's Hilarious. Allison Janney for all the awards!

"Jane the Virgin" is kind of a one-stop-shop for everything you could ever want from a TV show — it's got soap-worthy plotlines (an evil twin just got impaled!), great acting and writing (the show just nabbed some well-deserved Critic's Choice nominations), and one of the best love triangles currently on air (shots fired, "The Vampire Diaries"). But you know what it also has in spades? Uplifting writing advice! Over the course of the season, Jane's made major in-roads on her writing career — it's quickly gone from secret hobby to full-blown pursuit, and along the way, she's learned a lot of lessons that the rest of us writers can benefit from as well. And hey, when you think about it, these writing tips actually come care of showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and her crack team of writers, and who doesn't want to hang on their every word? Remember just a couple weeks ago, in the days leading up to the Oscar nominations, when there was so much handwringing about how, instead of the populist slate the Academy might have preferred, all the likely nominees were obscure little films that few moviegoers had seen, meaning there would be little rooting interest for viewers and the ratings for the Academy Awards ceremony would plummet? Well, that's not a problem anymore.
There's finally one bona fide blockbuster among the Best Picture nominees: "American Sniper," which has grossed more than $200 million at this writing and may reach $300 million by the time the Oscar show is telecast, four weeks from now.
What's more, there's a genuine cultural battle being fought, at least on the op-ed pages, in blogs, and on cable talk-fests, between "American Sniper" and "Selma." Not that this makes much sense; aside from Best Picture nominations and questions about their historical accuracy,...

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, airing this Sunday, January 25, aren't as high-profile as some of the other awards shows clamoring for your attention throughout January and February. Indeed, awards fatigue from the People's Choice, Critic's Choice, and Golden Globes may keep you from watching, or maybe you're just saving up your red-carpet energy for next month's Grammys and Oscars.
Still, for sheer entertainment value, it's hard to beat the SAGs. Like the Globes, they honor celebrities from both TV and film while plying the winners and losers with liquor. Like the Oscars, they're voted on by actual movie professionals. And like the MTV Movie Awards, they're often irreverent, mercifully brief, and scheduled to air more than once in case you don't catch them live. For viewers at home, they offer the best elements of all awards shows and none of the worst. If you watch the SAGs this Sunday, here's...

The Oscars like to pretend they are entirely about merit, not commerce. They are not, after all, the People's Choice Awards, which can be predicted from box office earnings. Indeed, sometimes a movie like "The Hurt Locker," which almost no one bought tickets to see, can win Best Picture over an "Avatar." And yet, it would be naïve to think that Academy voters don't have a film's box office returns in the back of their minds as they decide how they'll vote.
It's been clear for the last few years, ever since they expanded the Best Picture field from five to as many as 10 nominees in 2009, that the Academy wants to be more accommodating to popular taste. For one thing, they want viewers to watch the awards show, and they're more likely to do so if they have a rooting interest in at least one of the movies up for top prizes.

Never mind the sweltering summer heat—nothing could be hotter than these gorgeous ladies. Seriously knocking our socks off this week was Keri Russell in an ultra-glamorous J. Mendel jacquard gown with a deep V-neckline. The actress usually opts for more causal-cool looks on the carpet, so we were all about her glitzy style turnaround at the Critic's Choice Television Awards. Also bringing her A-game to the awards show was Diane Kruger. The blonde beauty stunned in a feminine Elie Saab floral gown. And then there was Anna Paquin looking super sexy at the season premiere of her equally-sultry show True Blood. Styling her slinky Thakoon mini with a wrapped gold necklace and an edgy side-swept updo, the...

Liza Minnelli isn't the only Oscar attendee bringing a bolt of blue to the red carpet. Lupita Nyong'o arrived at the Academy Awards wearing a Grecian baby blue gown. The color is the latest shade to be added to the 12 Years a Slave actress's array of rainbow awards season gowns. The Best Supporting Actress nominee started off her red carpet rule with a stunning caped crimson number at the Golden Globes, then followed it up with hit after vibrant hit. Michael Hogan and Christopher Rosen backtrack somewhat on their recent comments that this Oscar season is "boring," especially regarding the race for Best Supporting Actress. They believe it is a dead-heat between Jennifer Lawrence ("American Hustle") and Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years a Slave"). Lawrence now has the BAFTA "upset" and the Golden Globe. Nyong'o won the SAG and Critic's Choice. With Lawrence "basically gone into hiding" in recent weeks, her anti-campaign might be helping her more than expected. Vanity Fair. Sasha Stone asks if there has "ever been a year like this one where one movie keeps winning Best Picture but not Best Director." That certainly seems to be the case with "12 Years a Slave" and Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity." Looking at the Oscars relating back to the Golden Globes and the Directors Guild, she discusses "In the Heat of the Night" vs. "The Graduate...

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Awards through March 2nd, when the winners are announced. For the second time, all Academy members are sent screeners of all the docs and can all vote in the category (as opposed to a select group, in previous years), which does suggest that this might go to the populist choice, as it did with Malik Bendjelloul's "Searching For Sugar Man" last year. That choice is surely Morgan Neville's backup singer film "20 Feet From Stardom," which is the only box office hit among the five nominees, and definitely the one with the most mainstream appeal. However, the only major doc precursor it won was the Critic's Choice Award. Alex Gibney's "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" and Sarah Polley's "Stories We Tell" won the PGA and WGA, respectively, but they aren't even nominated here.

We can't decide what's crazier: that Amy Adams' 2014 Critic's Choice Awards dress is so wildly similar to Jennifer Lawrence's 2012 SAG Awards attire, or that we noticed the copy! Two years after the then Winter's Bone star stepped onto one of her very first red carpets, the Her actress rocked this equally pink, black-bowed, full-length look. No, Amy's lipstick pink Roland Mouret isn't identical to JLaw's Barbie car Oscar de la Renta, but we bet they're way too close for her stylist's comfort... Right off the bat, we're giving the superior shade award to Amy. Her paler pink is less intense than the Hunger Games star's high school girl hue. In terms of design,...

Sorry, but it's still so hard to realize that Abigail Breslin is nearly all grown up! The 17-year-old actress has made it very clear that she's not Little Miss Sunshine anymore, but fans may still be a little thrown when seeing just how mature the August: Osage County star is. Breslin showed up to the 2014 Critic's Choice Awards wearing a soft blue, cleavage-baring gown, with sheer sleeves and sparkling floral design. The star finished her look by styling her hair in big blond curls swept to one side and kept her makeup minimal but popped a red lip. Along with her real-life image, Breslin has proven that her roles have matured as well. In her latest film, August: Osage County, the...

As the new year comes closer, Iron Man 3 has been featured in a lot of the best movies of the year lists, especially among the main movie websites, among films like Gravity and 12 Years A Slave. After Empire Magazine and The Huffington Post to name a few labeled the third entry in the Iron Man franchise the best superhero film of the year, and a "Best Action Movie" nomination by the Critic's Choice Movie Awards, this time Forbes Magazine is the one giving Iron Man 3 the praise the film deserves, with Scott Mendelson claiming it's "easily the best "conventional" blockbuster of 2013". Read below the full excerpt: This is the kind of whip-smart blockbuster than almost ennobles the would-be genre. Yes, it’s a special effects-filled action romp that’s part of an ongoing franchise, but it’s also an individual work of art, a case of Marvel being...

How am I ever going to decide on my own awards ballots this year? When the Film Bitch Awards begin in late December / early January - hell even before then when I vote at the annual Bfca "Critic's Choice" Awards -- I will have to make a Sophie's Choices and narrow it way down. There are so many fine performances this year. How will I choose??? Oh god, how will I choose. And with a few films still unseen these two fields could even grow.

"American Horror Story: Coven" has not yet started filming, but hints about the third season of FX's highly-anticipated series are already trickling out.
Sarah Paulson -- who had a minor role as a medium on Season 1 of the series and a major role in the second "Asylum" season as reporter-turned-patient Lana Winters -- recently told The Hollywood Reporter that fans should expect some big changes in "American Horror Story: Coven."
When asked how different her Season 3 character will be from Lana, Paulson told THR, "Definitely different. Basically, she's going to look different, and my relationship to Jessica Lange is going to be quite different this time. At the beginning of last season, no one knew that Lana would be the hero, so it's possible I could end up the evil one this year. As of right now, there will be some of Lana Winters' qualities in my character, but I don't know for sure.

Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series has begun filming, according to Entertainment Weekly. Below we have the first photo of Joss Whedon in between takes. The image comes via tweet from Maurissa Tancharoen, wife of Jed Whedon and executive producer/writer on the show.
Whedon shared the excitement at the Critic's Choice Awards, where he said:
The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter. It's about people who don't have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, and there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling — but all played on a very human, small level. That's the appeal of the thing.

What a week ... for Ben Affleck.
Not only did he walk away with two Critic's Choice Awards, but the actor and director surprised everyone (even himself), when he nabbed a Golden Globe for Best Director and Best Picture: Drama for "Argo."
“Look, I don’t care what the award is, when they put your name next to the names that [presenter Halle Berry] just read off, it’s an extraordinary thing in your life," he gushed during his acceptance speech. “These nominees are exceptional talents. I truly to God never thought I would be in the same breath as them.”
But Ben's mention of wife Jennifer Garner and their three kids had everyone tearing up. "I want to thank my three kids Violet, Sera and Sam, I love you guys. And I want to thank my wife," he said. "She's the reason I'm standing here. I adore you, I love you so much.

Bradley Cooper is pulling a Ryan Gosling.
The actor, 38, who is nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for his role in "Silver Linings Playbook," revealed to E! News that he's taking his mom Gloria as his date to the Academy Awards on Feb. 24. (Gosling is a fan of this move).

As for what Gloria thought of her son's coveted Oscars nomination, Cooper said "she was freaking out." But, was he?

Iranian director promises 'appropriate response' to film about rescue of six Americans from Tehran during 1979 hostage crisis
Plans are afoot in Iran to produce a riposte to Ben Affleck's Oscar-nominated movie Argo, which depicts a CIA attempt to rescue six Americans from Tehran duing the 1979 hostage crisis, according to reports.
Director Ataollah Salmanian told the Iranian news agency Mna that he was working on a film to be called The General Staff, and which "should be an appropriate response to the ahistoric film Argo". Ever since its premiere in the Us in October 2012, Argo has been viewed with disfavour by the Iranian establishment, and Salmanian hopes to secure funding from the Art Bureau wing of the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organisation.
Meanwhile, Affleck confirmed that his own follow-up to the otherwise well-received Argo will be an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 20s-set crime novel Live by Night, about mobsters during the Prohibition era.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) -- an organization of which I am a member -- held the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards tonight and while I wasn't able to be in attendance, I voted on these awards so I had some measure of a vested interest in how they turned out. Ben Affleck may have been snubbed for Best Director at the Oscar nominations this morning, but he took home Best Director at the Critic's Choice Awards and saw Argo win Best Picture. I wasn't able to be in attendance, but folks on Twitter relayed his Best Director acceptance speech where he said, "I would like to thank the Academy... I'm kidding, I'm kidding this is the one that counts." Director and Picture would be the only two awards Argo would take home while Silver Linings Playbook was the leading winner with four, three of which came from the comedy categories where it won Best Comedy,...
