Could the Academy’s best picture eligibility shakeup have a ripple effect across the pond?
In recent years, the Oscars and BAFTAs have tried to align as closely as possible on key industry issues, such as a diversified voting body and a representative nominees pool. But when it comes to theatrical release requirements for best picture, there could be a divergence of thought.
Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed a host of new theatrical release requirements for movies to qualify as best picture nominees for the 2025 Oscars. In addition to the standard one-week run in one of six U.S. markets, films released in 2024 will also require an expanded theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets, no later than 45 days after its initial release.

Film industry relations between China and Europe have been kept alive throughout the coronavirus outbreak by Bridging The Dragon, an informal trade organization now in its sixth year.
After its regular event held during the Berlin film festival in February, further seminars, presentations and mixers should have taken place in Cannes in May and in Beijing in November. Travel restrictions and the cancelation of in-person film festivals and markets put paid to those ideas.
Knowledge-sharing, Btd’s core concern, can be achieved online as millions of students around the world have learned. And re-conceiving the organization’s autumn event as a virtual conference, not only allowed the connections to be kept intact, but even to be expanded. A delegation of New Zealand producers joined the virtual event for the first time with some participating in another first, informal coaching sessions.

As the recently approved Pfizer/BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine began rolling out in the U.K. this week, the prevailing mood across the film and TV industry was one of cautious optimism. The breakthrough could be, quite literally, the shot in the arm needed to return to pre-covid strength — as long as other government and industry support can bolster any progress.
Adrian Wootton, CEO of national agency the British Film Commission (Bfc), reveals that 85% of production in the country has now restarted. With filming returning to normal levels, the vaccine will be a “significant step” for the screen sector’s full recovery. “It will provide that extra level of security to the rigorous health and safety practices already being implemented across film and TV production to make it Covid-secure,” says Wootton.
The vaccination roll-out — a considerable morale boost for the U.K., where Covid-19 has claimed more than 63,000 lives to date — is already spawning television programming.

Film finance experts discussed the short and long term consequences of Brexit at today’s Screen Film Summit.
Brexit is having a positive impact for some film investors, but the long-term picture is more murky, according to a panel of film finance experts speaking at today’s Screen Film Summit (Nov 24).
Talking at London’s Picturehouse Central, Tim O’Shea, senior investment director at Ingenious, said: “For us in the short term there is certainly opportunities for producers.
“We are seeing much more interest since the vote. The falling value of the sterling means North American producers want to shoot over here because their dollars will go further, coupled with our tax credits, world leading crew and services. There are many opportunities here.”

A quiet revolution is afoot: older people are flocking to cinemas. But they don't care for special effects. They want big characters, grown-up dramas and tales of late-blooming love. And so Hollywood's changing its game ...
Until recently, cinemas were seen as pretty much a no-go zone for older people. There might be the occasional "silver screening" in a teatime slot, but the rest of the time noisy youngsters would hold sway – crunching popcorn, spilling Coke on the floor and texting during the show. On screen, vampires, aliens, superheroes, childish fantasy, gross-out comedy or preposterous spectacle would probably prevail.
All of the above are still in evidence, but different fare has also come to the fore. In The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel a cast of ageing national treasures grapple with the tribulations of later life. Grown-up dramas such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Descendants, The Ides of March, The Iron Lady...

In America, The Weinstein Co has received most of the PR bonanza for backing Oscar-touted The King's Speech. But it's really a British film financing company aptly named Prescience that first recognized the film's potential. With an office in Beaconsfield, a quaint market town 20 miles outside of London, the Prescience only set up in business 5 years ago -- which underscores how far this boutique film financier has come. Prescience has backed 25 films to date with a total production value of $400 million. It's run by managing director Tim Smith and his co-director Paul Brett who've both worked in the movie industry for more than 20 years at British outposts of Hollywood studios. Smith used to work for Fox, while Brett has worked for Miramax, Pathé and Paramount. Both come from a marketing background, which is what they say they’re bringing to the party. Brett tells me: “In Hollywood a film gets...
