Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

This article has been corrected to include Alexander Payne’s first feature film, “Citizen Ruth.”
Alexander Payne has a near-perfect record when it comes to his movies being nominated for Academy Awards. The acclaimed writer, director, and producer — one of our very best — has made eight movies so far including his latest flick “The Holdovers” and five of them have been nominated for Oscars. Here’s the breakdown.
Payne’s debut feature film was “Citizen Ruth” (“The Passion of Martin” was only 49 minutes), which follows Laura Dern as a drug-addicted pregnant woman who finds herself in the middle of an abortion debate as she weighs up her choices regarding the pregnancy. This 1996 movie was not nominated for any Oscars.
His next movie was “Election,” which stars Matthew Broderick as a high school teacher who meets his match with Reese Witherspoon‘s over-achieving student. In 2000, the film was nominated for Best...

The list of directors who get to do exactly what they want onscreen is not long. Even big-budget, A-list directors not named Scorsese or Nolan must work within commercial IP.
Alexander Payne is different. MGM will turn the life of Gonzo Godfather Hunter S. Thompson into a new TV treat. Drink deep, it's good for you...
"When times get weird, the weird turn pro," Hunter S. Thompson once wrote. It’s been 13 years since the father of Gonzo journalism decided to end his life - ending the games, the fun, the walking and the swimming. Since then, times have gotten weirder than any hallucinogenic chemical fantasia might have imagined. So, maybe it's time for an authorised, televised Hunter S. Thompson biography to tell the story.
There are no details on what it will be, but it will be directed by Davey Homes, who runs the TV adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1990 novel Get Shorty, and written by Bob Nelson, who wrote screenplays for The Confirmation and Nebraska. The Thompson biography project is being produced by MGM Television.

Robert Eggers took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay Saturday. The writer and director of “The Witch,” Eggers’ debut feature is a beautifully shot horror about a Puritan family’s brush with witches told entirely in old English. Set in New England decades before the Salem witch trials of 1692, “The Witch” was lauded for its daring and inventive new take on the classic genre.
Originally a designer for experimental and classical theater in New York City, Eggers transitioned to film as a designer and by directing shorts. In his acceptance speech, Eggers said: “I want to thank my wife, who had to be around for four years while I was obsessed with witches… Also thanks to the Puritans, who wrote a lot of stuff down. Otherwise I couldn’t have written this.”

In his latest film, Clive Owen revisits some of the same terrain he traversed with his hit series The Knick, namely substance abuse. In Bob Nelson’s The Confirmation, Owen plays an alcoholic carpenter whose gung-ho-Catholic ex-wife (Maria Bello) entrusts him with their 8-year-old son (Jaeden Lieberher) for a weekend. For the film, the 51-year-old actor researched the physical effects of the delirium tremens, not entirely unlike the sweat-drenched cocaine and opium withdrawals his Dr. Thackery suffered from on The Knick. Although he has worked with some of the greatest contemporary filmmakers —

An alcoholic father survives a tough 24 or so hours in The Confirmation, Bob Nelson's light drama about the attempt to pass some values on from father to son despite circumstances unconducive to good parenting. A broken-family portrait refreshingly free of bad guys — well, mostly — it turns on an admirably ragged performance by Clive Owen as the divorcee trying to provide his own sort of life lessons to augment the Catholic ritual his ex-wife has planned for their son. A top-notch cast should help the picture at the box office despite an underwhelming marketing campaign.

Every now and then a movie has a way of sneaking up on you. It seems pleasant enough at the start but gets deeper and richer as it goes along. Only when it’s over do you fully realize how satisfying it has been. That’s the best way I can describe, and recommend, The Confirmation, which marks the directing debut of Bob Nelson, the Oscar-nominated writer of Nebraska. This is another small-town saga that takes an empathetic, clear-eyed look at working-class people. Clive Owen stars as a luckless finish-carpenter who’s trying to kick a drinking habit and clear the air with his ex-wife (now remarried) and young son (Jaden Lieberher, who’s as good here as he is in Midnight Special)....

In 2013, Bob Nelson earned an Oscar nomination for a gem of a character-driven comedy called Nebraska. It took about a decade for that one to make it to the screen, but, wasting no time, he is making his feature directorial debut — at nearly age 60! — with a new script, The Confirmation. It might not be in the same league as Alexander Payne’s Best Picture Oscar nominee, but it is right up there with it, a wonderfully entertaining and wry slice of American life. Nelson’s…...

The Confirmation opens with a child and his mother waiting outside a church. As the first lines of dialogue were spoken, I felt a sudden pang of shock, thinking I had unwittingly sat down for one of the numerous heavy-handed faith-based features crowding multiplexes. Thankfully, as it continued, the film revealed itself to instead be a rather smart comedy in which faith is a subject sometimes pondered by its characters. Seen through the eyes of its young protagonist, there is so much power in those big unanswerable questions of faith. The boy’s middle-class parents do not see eye-to-eye on the matter of religion, rarely agreeing on any subject since their divorce.

On the face of it, it’s a simple story of a boy bonding with his father. But, like all good writing, there is a great deal more to be found, just below the surface – as the new trailer for The Confirmation corroborates. Divorce, past misdeeds, the perception of others, the quest for redemption – this film, that stars Clive Owen, would seem to encompass everything about moving forward in life, and embracing uncertainty. All of that adds up to something that has the potential to be a wonderfully life-affirming experience.

"Your dad is a good man. He's got some demons, but you know, we all do." Lionsgate has debuted a trailer for the comedy The Confirmation, written/directed by Bob Nelson. It stars Clive Owen as an alcoholic, down-on-his-luck carpenter who must take care of his eight-year-old son Anthony, played by Jaeden Lieberher, while his mother and her new husband go to a Catholic retreat. Adapted screenplay nominees Damien Chazelle and Paul Thomas Anderson have been nominated for films that they also directed.
Chazelle’s Whiplash, about an aspiring jazz drummer and his sadistic instructor, is his second feature film and is adapted from a short film of the same name that he also wrote and directed. The short won the jury award for short films at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Whiplash was nominated for four other awards, including best picture.
Anderson received his second adapted screenplay nomination for Inherent Vice, based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel of the same name. The film was also nominated for costume design. Anderson previously received an adapted screenplay nomination for 2007’s There Will Be Blood, which he also directed. He received a best director nomination, and the film was nominated for best picture.

Yesterday the Academy sent out a press release announcing 271 individuals who have been invited to join their hallowed ranks. This happens each and every year and is something very nice to see. I always like finding out which members of the industry are invited to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This year, with 271 individuals seen fit for acceptance into their ranks, I sort of wonder if they’ll be able to impact voting in some way and change who and what are nominated for Oscars. You can see the full list of who’s been invited to join at the end of this piece, but a number of names stand out to me and got me thinking about this. Who are some of the folks on the invite list? Well, they include the likes of Paul Dano, Michael Fassbender, Clark Gregg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lupita Nyong’o,...

This year, 271 people were invited to join the motion picture academy. While Oscar nominees, such as this year's five for acting -- Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Lupita Nyongo (winner) and June Squibb -- and two for writing -- Bob Nelson ("Nebraska") and Terence Winter ("The Wolf of Wall Street") -- are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. (See the full list after the break.) -Break- Join in the fierce debate about the early Oscar contenders going on right now in our red-hot forums A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible. For example, actors must "have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award
• How the night unfolded

12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

After months and months of lead up and speculation (not to mention an endless string of precursor awards), the Academy Awards were finally given out, and the results were almost as unpredictable as we’d all been saying. 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture despite only winning two other Oscars and losing in the Best Director and Best Film Editing categories (both of which Gravity took), normally categories that go to the Best Picture winner. Gravity was the biggest winner of the night in terms of numbers though, taking seven prizes, including the aforementioned Director (for Alfonso Cuaron) and Editing fields. In terms of the other prizes, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were once again awarded for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club (McConaughey in Best Actor and Leto in Best Supporting Actor), while Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine and Lupita Nyong’o edged out Jennifer Lawrence...

The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... I learned on E! that no one wearing red has ever won the Oscar. Yeah, that's hard-hitting journalism right there.
