Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

Tension at the University of California, Los Angeles, continued over the weekend and into Monday when professors protested outside an A-list gala at the school on Saturday night and another several dozen students were detained on Monday, while investigations into the mob that attacked the pro-Palestine encampment on campus last week continued.
Despite the mass arrests and dismantling of an encampment by police in riot gear that took place on Thursday, pro-Palestine protests carried on Monday at the university. A group of demonstrators was seen zip-tied and being moved by authorities from a UCLA parking garage to an Lacpd bus. The number of protester arrests was 43, according to local news reports Ktla, with those taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and released after they were processed; all classes have now been moved to remote.

“9 To 5” Was Legendary For It’s Time
The original 9 to 5 centered around three women who worked in a corporate office, reporting to the same boss.

With hindsight being 20/20 and all, it may be a shock to learn that when Jane Fonda and producing partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to make a workplace comedy about three secretaries who decide to enact revenge on their tyrannical, chauvinist boss called "9 to 5," few people (see: men) in positions of power thought the film would be a success. And yet, the film -- which got its name after a grassroots organization of women fighting for workplace equality and fair pay (that is still around today) -- was a box-office smash, launched the mainstream career of Dolly Parton outside of music, and inspired both a TV adaptation and a Broadway musical.
Featuring interviews with Parton, Fonda, Lily Tomlin, countless others who worked on the film, the TV adaptation (Rita Moreno!), the Broadway musical (Allison Janney!), and activists from then and now, the documentary "Still Working 9 to 5" currently boasts a 93% critical score.

“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. And someone very much in the middle of creating those life achievements that led to last night’s honor at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where a large...

Nicole Kidman is the rare actress in the 21st century who, like the stars of Hollywood’s golden years, doesn’t disappear into roles so much as elevate films by her mere presence.
She’s certainly swung big at mainstream blockbusters (think: the “Aquaman” films) that might feel out of her step with her character-driven work elsewhere (like most of the films on the list that follows). But that’s because the Australian icon is unafraid of any role, whether stripping down her post-Oscar, A-lister veneer to film Lars von Trier’s Brechtian “Dogville” in Sweden, slipping into a bathtub with the 10-year-old possible reincarnation of her dead husband in Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth,” or, yes, donning a fake nose to play a suicidal Virginia Woolf for her Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours.”

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.

Well, I know what song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. First reported by The Insneider, Jennifer Aniston is producing a reimagining of 9 to 5 for 20th Century Studios. The iconic 1980 movie starred Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda as three women who join forces to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Of course, the movie also featured the iconic theme song written and performed by Parton, which became one of the biggest hits of the decade.
Jennifer Aniston will produce the 9 to 5 reimagining through her Echo Films banner, along with her partner Kristin Hahn. Lisa Frankenstein screenwriter Diablo Cody will pen the script for the project, and although plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s assumed it will more or less follow the beats of the original.

Aniston’s production company will reportedly reimagine the hit 1980 Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton comedy about sexism in the workplace – with a script by Diablo Cody
Jennifer Aniston’s production company, Echo Films, are to reimagine classic comedy 9 to 5 for a modern day audience, according to reports first covered by The Insneider. The script is being written by Juno and Young Adult writer Diablo Cody.
No plot details have yet been revealed, but the 1980 original centred on three female colleagues in an office who team up to take revenge on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Dabney Coleman starred in the film, which was scripted by Patricia Resnick with Colin Higgins, who also directed. It was based on an idea by Fonda, who commissioned the film as a vehicle for herself and Tomlin before bringing Parton on board.

It’s no way to make a livin’, but the 9 To 5 is something that most of us can relate to, not least because the phrase was immortalised in the 1980 office satire (not to mention Dolly Parton’s iconic title song) that starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman and Parton herself.
The film followed ‘three female office colleagues who decide to exact revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss’ and some 43 years later, it looks like we may be seeing 9 To 5 return to our screens in the form a shiny new reimagining. 20th Century Studios is backing the new project with Jennifer Aniston set to produce according to a Variety report.

It has only been one month since the 96th Academy Awards ended, but this week it looks like the race for the 97th has (un)officially begun.
Say what???
Even though Emmy season is in full force (Deadline’s two-day Contenders Television live and livestream event takes place this weekend), it’s never too early to start a new Oscar season. That is why I traveled to Las Vegas this week to squeeze in CinemaCon — that movie orgy convention of what studios have in store for us — in between last Sunday’s roaring Bruce Springsteen concert at the Forum and last night’s rocking “Keep The Party Going: Jimmy Buffett Tribute” at the Hollywood Bowl.
By the way, I spotted more Hollywood heavyweights in Bowl boxes Thursday night than even at CinemaCon, including Ted Sarandos, David Zaslav, Bob Iger, Jennifer Salke, Frank Marshall (even playing guitar on stage in the...

Across the sprawling city of Los Angeles — within feet of children’s bedrooms, playgrounds, office buildings, and places of worship — there’s an oil well, exuding toxins that put nearby residents at risk of asthma attacks, reproductive issues, and multiple types of cancer. The evidence stacked against Big Oil is alarming, and after more than 130 years since drilling began in the town of flowers and sunshine, the Los Angeles city council unanimously voted to phase out drilling in January 2021.
In response, oil and gas companies collected enough signatures for a referendum to challenge the legislation.

“When Jane Fonda calls, you show up,” explained John Legend, tickling the ivories in front of a large crowd of glittery art lovers, environmentalists and celebs. “Wouldn’t you?”
The large artist, art collector and celeb crowd mingling in the white chandelier-strewn tent behind Gagosian Gallery made it pretty clear they not only would, but did. Fonda, along with gallerist Larry Gagosian and Christie’s, organized the evening, titled “Art For a Safe and Healthy California” — an art sale to support California’s grassroots fight against Big Oil, in an attempt to protect neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling. With so many years of activism and fundraising dedicated to feminist, pacifist and environmental issues — organizing, fundraising, holding benefits, walkouts, protests, not to mention getting arrested four times — Jane Fonda is now going up against Big Oil.
Nothing the lifelong rights fighter can’t handle, of course.

Ed Ruscha, running late to class one day in 1950, accidentally stiff-armed a glass-panel door at his junior high in Oklahoma City. “My hand went right through that door, all the students looked up, and there I was just dripping with blood,” says Ruscha, sipping a macchiato while seated behind a marble-topped desk in the skylit library of his Culver City studio, a sprawling 9,000-square-foot affair that was previously a movie prop house and before that an aerospace factory for Howard Hughes.
“I had this scar on my wrist for years,” he explains, rolling up the sleeve of an indigo button-down to inspect his left forearm, a rakish smile curling over his lips at the prospect of unearthing some remnants of that lacerating memory. “It’s almost gone by now.”

Zendaya’s seemingly futuristic body armor actually has a long history steeped in cinema and pop culture.
At the root of it all is the likeness to the female robot, often called “Maria,” in Fritz Lang’s masterwork of futurism, Metropolis. Maria has inspired countless cultural references including the images of Lang’s robot used in David Bowie and Queen’s video for “Under Pressure”; a profound influence on Ralph McQuarrie’s designs for C-3Po in Star Wars; inspiring looks worn by Beyoncé, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga; providing the concept of Janelle Monáe’s Metropolis: The Chase Suite album; and serving as a background for Whitney Houston’s music video for “Queen of the Night” as well references in the The Bodyguard.

Contains spoilers for The First Omen.
If you’ve seen The First Omen you’ll probably know the scene Den of Geek and director Arkasha Stevenson are talking about. In it, our hero, young would-be nun Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) witnesses a woman in the birthing room at the convent, traumatically having her baby. Her feet are in stirrups, she visibly distressed, and no wonder. Because what Margaret, and we, see as the head starts to crown is a demon hand appearing out of the woman’s vagina. It is extremely disturbing and it was vitally important to Stevenson that the image made it into the film.
“What my life has been about for the last year and a half is making sure that image got into the film,” she explains. “I think the reason why it’s so important is because we are talking about body horror, but what...

Sydney Sweeney, the currently up-and-coming actress stealing everyone’s hearts with each new project, has a jam-packed schedule as she focuses on heading to the top. That being said, her next big role is that of the titular lead in the reportedly in-the-works sultry science fiction reboot of Jane Fonda’s original film from 1968, Barbarella.

Dolly Parton has always described her husband as handsome, and Jane Fonda apparently agrees. While they were on set for Nine to Five, Parton’s husband, Carl Dean, dropped by. After a bit of flirtatious banter from Fonda, the two began discussing Parton. She said she was incredibly flattered by what her husband said about her.
Dolly Parton’s husband spoke highly about his wife
Dean stopped by the Nine to Five set to visit his wife and to see Fonda. She had been his celebrity crush for years and he wanted to see her in person. They talked for a bit — Fonda apparently thought he was very good-looking — and the conversation eventually became about Parton.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is in recovery after undergoing a surgical procedure to get a pacemaker.
On Monday’s episode of his Arnold’s Pump Club podcast, the 76-year-old shared that he underwent surgery to have a pacemaker implanted.
“I have some personal news to share. Last Monday, I had surgery for a pacemaker and became a little bit more of a machine,” he announced.
Despite admitting that opening up about his health so publicly “goes against so much of my upbringing in Austria,” he said he wanted to be transparent given so many have shared with him their own heart health stories and by sharing his story it gives “them courage and hope to deal with their own” and “it only feels right to talk about this.”
