Scottish actor Ewan McGregor and Swedish Oscar winner Alicia Vikander will be honored at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Both will receive Karlovy Vary’s President’s Award, a lifetime achievement honor.
Vikander made her international breakthrough in Nikolaj Arcel’s A Royal Affair (2012), which was Oscar-nominated, and established her global star credentials as a humanoid android in Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, which earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, and as Danish artist Gerda Wegener in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, a performance that won her the best supporting actress Oscar. She has managed to balance work in mainstream actioners, such as Jason Bourne or Tomb Raider, with more arthouse features (The Glorias, Blue Bayou).

Nick Meyer is leaving his job as president of film at eOne when his contract ends next month, according to a report confirmed by a company source.

Nick Meyer is stepping down as President of Film at Entertainment One (eOne) at the end of his contract in June, Meyer said in a memo to staffers on Friday.
Read the memo below:
Dear Team:
These days, success in our industry, and the excellence we aspire to, hinges on our ability to evolve and balance an ever-changing landscape with the desire to make exceptional movies and support artists on the winding path to reach audiences. As eOne’s relationship with Hasbro moves to its next chapter, I have decided to end my tenure as eOne’s President of Film when my contract ends next month.
It has been an epic run, starting with the founding of Sierra with Marc in 2009 through the subsequent mergers with eOne and Hasbro. Together, we have built a robust film development and production division at eOne by creating both award-winning and blockbuster content that reaches audiences worldwide.

Exclusive: Nick Meyer has just informed his staff that he’s exiting as eOne’s President of Film when his contract ends next month.
The news comes as Hasbro is expected to settle on a buyer of its eOne studio division, those jockeying being Lionsgate and Legendary, and distributor GoDigital Media Group as Deadline first reported.
Hasbro bought eOne in 2019 for $4 billion. The toymaker is looking to unload all scripted and unscripted TV production (except for the Family Brands division housing such IP as Peppa Pig and Pj Masks), all film production and related global distribution and a 6,500-plus title content library and Hasbro’s interest in eOne’s Canadian film and TV business.
Former Sierra/Affinity Boss Meyer has had quite a streak, with 17 Oscar wins from 62 nominations and 10 BAFTA wins from 51 nominations under that label. He also produced such titles as The Woman King, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Mrs.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, real-life husband and wife, are reuniting onscreen for the second time. The Oscar-winner (Vikander for “The Danish Girl”) and the Oscar-nominee (Fassbender for “12 Years A Slave”) will star in “Hope,” a mostly Korean-language feature from Na Hong-Jin.
The picture, about a mysterious delivery made on the outskirts of a remote harbor town, is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since “The Wailing” earned rave reviews and $49 million worldwide in 2016 from a $6 million budget, with $48 million of that coming from South Korea.
“Oftentimes,” noted Hong-Jin, “a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine allows her repressed trauma to color the present as she re-enters the opera world after so many years away.
Smith and Seyfried previously worked together on HBO series Big Love, playing siblings Ben and Sarah Henrickson.

Korean directors have made headlines in Hollywood the last two years, and Justin Chon may just be next in line. Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” and Isaac Lee-Chung’s “Minari” won a variety of accolades; between the two of them, they boast 5 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes, and a Palme d’Or to boot. Chon – whose latest release “Blue Bayou” had also been selected for Cannes 2020 – has been reviewed as another potential favorite for the 2021 awards season. This time, Chon introduces a different Korean American tale to the table: that of involuntary migration.
“Blue Bayou” is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema
In “Blue Bayou,” Antonio (Justin Chon) is an ethnic-Korean adoptee who is not exactly a model citizen. He’s a small-time tattoo artist with a criminal record; moreover, as the movie shows, he’s prone to run away from his problems (oftentimes on a motorcycle). Despite his speckled past,...

Sunday night’s emotional “The Last of Us” episode titled “Long Long Time,” which featured the 1970 Linda Ronstadt song of the same name, had fans in tears – and hitting up streaming services to download the song about unrequited love.
In one scene, zombie apocalypse survivor Frank (Murray Bartlett) chooses “The Best of Linda Ronstadt” sheet music to play after being rescued by Bill (Nick Offerman), whose rendition of the song expresses his own loneliness. They then share their first kiss.
On Monday afternoon, the song had hit No. 5 on iTunes’ Top 100 Songs chart. It was written by Gary White and released as a single from her 1970 album “Silk Purse” and peaked at No. 25 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Exclusive: Mark O’Brien (Your Honor) will exec produce and star in the coming-of-age drama Topper from 1A Motion Pictures and Bad Lad Productions, which has wrapped production in Detroit. Others set for major roles include Paul Johansson (God Is a Bullet), Amanda Clayton (City on a Hill), and actor-comedians Jimmy Shubert (Entourage), Bryan Callen (Warrior) and Erik Griffin (Workaholics).
The first feature written and directed by actor Kevin McNamara (Why Women Kill) follows Topper (O’Brien), a hard-drinking middling comedian with a seemingly endless capacity for self-sabotage. Topper receives news that his estranged father (Johansson) is terminally ill and begrudgingly returns to Detroit to sell the family home, which was never much of a home to him.
While back in Detroit, the friends he left behind — Lucas (Callen), Cooper (Griffin) and Ray (Shubert) — aren’t shy about pointing out how far he has drifted off course, despite showing early promise as a young comic.

As a director, Justin Chon has long trafficked in stories about fractured families in heightened situations. “Gook” was about a pair of brothers running their father’s shoe store in the aftermath of his death and in the shadow of the Los Angeles riots. “Ms. Purple” followed estranged siblings trying to make amends with their father before his death. “Blue Bayou” cast Chon himself as an immigrant father attempting to stay in the U.S. while the government tries to toss him out.
Fathers, children, and terrible outside forces are also at play in his fifth feature film, “Jamojaya,” which continues Chon’s traditional obsessions but wraps them in filled with predictable problems, obvious baddies, and trite lessons. In expanding his viewpoint beyond his typically smaller-scale stories — both in terms of the film’s general plot, which follows a rising young rapper who learns (gasp) that the music industry is bad,...

Up-and-coming Indonesian rapper James (Brian Imanuel) has taken a major professional leap signing with an international label. But just as the music execs are eager to take his music global, they demand he dilute his cultural identity to appeal to industry trends in the West. Yet “Jamojaya” –the new feature from director Justin Chon, premiering at Sundance — is only partially about James’ tug of war with the greedy forces impatient to exploit him. A familial fissure haunts him as well.
The rising star has chosen to part ways professionally with his father and now former manager Joyo (Yayu A.W. Unru), a decision the latter hasn’t taken well. Under pressure to record his album in Hawaii, James initially welcomes his dad’s presence during an unexpected visit. The more time they spent together, however, the more toxic their exchanges turn.

Before Covid upended the film festival scene, Sundance premieres were a hotbed of drama as studio chiefs and streaming executives staked out the best seats in the theater and then beat a path for the exits as soon as the credits rolled in the hopes of outmaneuvering each other for the hottest films. After two years of going virtual, Sundance is back in-person. However, it’s unclear if the all-night bidding wars that were such a staple of past festivals will also return in force. At a time of cost-cutting and box office struggles for indie movies, a new era of fiscal restraint may be the order of the day.
But Sundance’s thin mountain air could cause all that economizing to evaporate. And if it does, here are 13 films that could have buyers writing big checks.

It’s been 20 years since actress Tia Carrere walked the red carpet for a starring role. That was for Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch,” in which she voiced Nani Peleka. Tonight, she gets to do it for Universal’s “Easter Sunday.”
Carrere plays Tita Teresa in Jo Koy’s film about a family coming together on Easter Sunday, which features an all-Filipino cast. She calls playing Koy’s aunt in the film a “dream role.” After four decades in the industry, Carrere, who starred in “Waynes World,” “True Lies” and “Rising Sun,” has nonetheless faced her fair share of rejection for roles because she was considered too “ethnic” or “exotic.”
Carrere sat down with Variety to talk about why Tita Teresa is a first for her and what’s in store for her next music album.

Cannes is back in full force with the announcement of the Official Selection for the film festival’s 74th edition. Taking place in July after having been originally scheduled for May, Cannes is returning with an in-person event after the pandemic forced the festival to cancel in 2020. Spike Lee, who was supposed to head the jury and premiere his “Da 5 Bloods” out of competition last year, is returning to Cannes 2021 as jury president. Films such as Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” Leos Carax’s “Annette,” and Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta” were all supposed to premiere at Cannes 2020 but are now confirmed for Cannes 2021 after waiting a year to be unveiled to the world.
Given this is the first Cannes in the Covid pandemic era, there are as many questions about the event’s safety protocols as there are about the lineup. Cannes general delegate Thierry Frémaux told IndieWire...

The Michael Showalter-directed Searchlight movie The Eyes of Tammy Faye will open a week earlier on Sept. 17 instead of Sept. 24. It wouldn’t be shocking if the Jessica Chastain-Andrew Garfield-Vincent D’Onofrio movie about the rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker is debuting this fall among the troika of Venice, TIFF and Telluride. Tammy Faye will debut against other limited arthouse fare on its new date as Bleecker Street’s I’m Your Man and Focus Features’ Blue Bayou; Paramount’s Clifford the Big Red Dog being the widest release on Sept. 17.
An untitled Marvel movie moves off of Oct. 7, 2022 to Oct. 6, 2023. There is already an untitled Warner Bros. movie on that 2023 date. As a result of the move, Disney has taken off an untitled...

With the 2021 Oscars in the rearview, Variety looks ahead to what could be a very packed and condensed year with the Awards Circuit Draft for Oscars 2022.
A tradition for the past 16 years, I’ve always thrown shots in the dark in the week immediately following the Academy Awards. For the first time, my year-in-advance top pick, Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” won picture and director. Can lightning strike twice?
The last two years have included thoughts that 2019’s “Harriet” from Kasi Lemmons would have a big Academy debut, with top spots for eventual nominee Cynthia Erivo, but the love ending there. In 2018, I suspected “The Irishman” from Martin Scorsese would arrive in time, but alas, it was pushed to 2019.
Other past choices have included 2017’s “Phantom Thread” (then untitled), 2016’s “Silence” (although I did have “Moonlight” in the predicted 10), 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur”, 2014’s “Inherent Vice” (why not another try for Paul Thomas Anderson?...

Ten-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt was the first honoree to be celebrated during Sunday night’s CBS telecast of the 2019 Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. Eagles member Don Henley, who, along with future bandmate Glenn Frey, backed Ronstadt early in her solo career, presented a recap of highlights from the Arizona-born singer’s early life and her influential rise to stardom. In recognition of Ronstadt’s pivotal role as a crossover artist who routinely placed songs on the country and pop charts throughout the Seventies, country superstar Carrie Underwood delivered a...

Washington, D.C. — Political chatter was kept to a minimum Sunday night as the Kennedy Center Honors presented elaborate tributes to “Sesame Street” — made more poignant by the death of legendary puppeteer Caroll Spinney earlier in the day — as well as Sally Field, Linda Ronstadt, Earth, Wind and Fire and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.
The gala, in its 42nd year, once again capped a weekend of festivities that included a banquet on Saturday night at the U.S. State Department. Excluded for the third straight year was any participation by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, either as hosts of a traditional Sunday afternoon reception at the White House or attendees at the gala. It’s a workable arrangement for all given the president’s unpopularity within the arts and entertainment communities.

Sally Field, Linda Ronstadt, Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Tilson Thomas and Sesame Street were honored Sunday night at the Kennedy Center Honors, but what was all the more apparent was the tone of the show: A holiday season respite at one of D.C.’s most polarized moments. As the impeachment of President Donald Trump moves forward, among those attending were some of its most visible figures, like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose decision to open an inquiry led to this moment, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is among the administration figures defying congressional subpoenas. Also present: Chief Justice John Roberts, who would preside over a Senate trial.
A couple of times during the ceremony, host LL Cool J made oblique references to political divisions. He told the crowd of lawmakers, Trump administration cabinet secretaries, Hollywood figures and D.C. lobbyists that the honorees use their artistic talents...
