Most filmgoers recognize big cities like Miami, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in their favorite motion pictures. Sure enough, those locals provide the backdrop to several classic pictures from Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "King Kong" and Michael Mann's "Heat." However, another prominent locale exists in the film world, a place you've likely seen more often than not, even if it didn't immediately stand out. We're talking, of course, about the state of Maine.
Uniquely, many stories take place in the Pine Tree State. Its lush scenery and coastal views make for stunning cinematography, while the colder elements provide the necessary bleakness for heavier dramas. Here, family friendly fare like "Casper" and "Pete's Dragon" took flight, while more intense films such as the alligator thriller "Lake Placid" and the Stephen King horror tale "Pet Sematary" found unique ways to scare the bejesus out of audiences.

Quick Links The Plot of Lake Place Is Classic Creature Feature The Stellar Cast Makes It Worthwhile The Humor Made Lake Placid a Cult Classic This 90s Movie Made Crocodiles Creature Feature Icons
Steve Miner is a prolific director known for some of his horror movies that continue to be cult classics in the genre, including iconic sequels in major franchises such as Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981) and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). However, arguably, Miner's most underrated directorial work is the '90s creature feature, Lake Placid. Though other creature features of the time period, such as Anaconda and Tremors, have been widely praised for influencing the horror subgenre, this crocodile movie deserves far more credit than it gets.
Despite having a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly higher rating on IMDb with a 5.8/10, Lake Placid is one of the most impressive dark comedy creature features in the niche genre.

The best Oliver Platt movies and TV shows include a mix of critically acclaimed shows and award-winning big screen feature films. Platt figured out from an early age that he wanted to be an actor and studied drama at Tufts University before starting to work in theater in Boston. His big break came when he met Bill Murray, who attended one of Platt's plays and then recommended that Jonathan Demme cast him in the movie Married to the Mob in 1988. That was Platt's big break and his career skyrocketed from there.
Since that big break, Platt took on a variety of roles in several genres, with appearances in Working Girl, Beethoven, The Three Musketeers, and Lake Placid. While his movie roles have been plentiful, and resulted in several award nominations, it was his entry to television that gave him a chance to become a bigger star. This started with a...

It looks like we may be getting another Anaconda film. You could probably have gleamed that from the headline though, to be fair.

Crocodile and alligator movies offer genuine scares and entertainment, with these reptiles making for truly terrifying horror monsters. Niche subgenre films like Lake Placid and Crawl provide a mix of chills and laughs, showcasing the terror of these creatures. Crocodile movies like Eaten Alive and Rogue feature impressive practical effects and memorable villains, adding to the genre's unique appeal.
There are plenty of crocodile and alligator movies populating the creature-feature horror subgenre, and the very best show why the gigantic reptiles are so terrifying. Due to the popularity of movies like Jaws and The Shallows, many moviegoers consider sharks the most terrifying creature in the water. However, the truth is that the chances of being attacked by a shark are quite slim. However, crocodiles and alligators are much more aggressive with a higher chance of attack and, much like with sharks, Hollywood has attempted to terrify audiences using these cold-blooded reptiles.

A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.

During the knuckle-biting climax of Steven Spielberg's 1984 adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," the title hero (Harrison Ford) finds himself on a rope bridge, suspended 100 feet over a canal in India. Evil henchmen with swords are approaching him from either side, aiming to grab the mystical Sankara stones from his satchel. In the ravine below, vicious crocodiles await, hoping to eat any poor souls who may fall. Indiana Jones, seeing no other way out, extracts a sword and threatens to cut the rope bridge. It's all very exciting.

Horror crossovers can be wild and entertaining, even if they receive bad reviews and box office numbers. Some horror crossovers prioritize fun over scares, resulting in enjoyable B-movie messes. From monsters battling each other to comedic meetups, there are various styles of horror crossovers to choose from.
The horror genre has seen various crossovers, and while some were completely wild, they are worth checking out. Crossovers have happened in various genres for decades, but those in the horror genre are especially interesting. The world of horror is home to a variety of monsters, creatures, murderers, and more, and even though some share a couple of similarities, it would be uncommon to find them in the same universe. However, some filmmakers saw the chance of bringing together one or more horror villains in crossover movies, though not all of them were a success with critics and viewers.

Horror crossovers have a long history, ranging from brilliant to bizarre, with some silly premises and questionable reviews becoming highly successful franchises. Some notable horror crossovers include Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus, and Alien Vs. Predator. While some crossovers have been criticized for their surreal and incongruous elements, others, like "Freddy vs. Jason" and "Alien vs. Predator," have been praised for their enduring popularity and successful execution.
Horror movie crossovers have been produced for decades, but often vary wildly from the brilliant to the plain bizarre. While some have been met with critical acclaim, it is often the movies with seemingly the silliest premises and questionable critic reviews that are successful and spawn highly prosperous franchises. Nevertheless, horror crossovers have been a cinematic staple for years.
The horror genre has routinely sought to pair off iconic villains for an epic, spooky showdown.

Horror movie franchises are certainly not a rarity in the genre, with some of the biggest names in the horror game having multiple movies in their cinematic collection. While many of these long-running movie series have come to a conclusion, other franchises have promised a final film, going so far as to include that very word in the movie's title, only to renege on that promise and continue to add more entries following that "final" feature.
Although not contained solely to the horror genre, the prevalence of final chapters that do not actually conclude their franchises is higher when it comes to horror movies. Most of these horror movie franchises continued long beyond their claim to cap off their story, as is the case with Children of the Corn and Puppet Master, and one of the most popular horror properties is a repeat offender. The '90s brought about iconic horror movies, including The Blair Witch Project and The Sixth Sense. It was a revolutionary point in the genre that changed how modern viewers watch horror. However, while this decade had some exceptionally frightening films, it also had some of the best campy horror movies.
Odd creature features such as Leprechaun and Lake Placid didn't perform well upon their release, but are viewed today as some of the most humorous films in the subgenre. Sequels such as Bride of Chucky and Army of Darkness were controversial additions to their franchises that quickly became cult classics. These horror movies might not be the most terrifying, but they have a quirkiness that makes them unforgettable.

Things that stressed our parents didn’t worry us one bit and things we stressed about they found silly. Escape was found, as before and as still is, in horror movies. That year saw a few big releases, some great fun ones like eXistenZ, Deep Blue Sea, and Lake Placid, some that were meant to be great like Virus, The Haunting and The Astronaut’s Wife, and a whole lot of middle of the road titles like The Bone Collector, Resurrection, and From Dusk Till Dawn 2. Great horror movies often receive low critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, even when they are undeserving of it. Critics overlook the genre's artistic value. Underrated horror movies like The Tall Man and Lake Placid suffer from low Rotten Tomatoes ratings, despite their clever premises and success with audiences. Rotten Tomatoes ratings don't accurately reflect the quality of horror movies like Scream 4, Deep Rising, and I Come In Peace, which deserve more recognition.
Even great horror movies are sometimes saddled with terrible critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, as evidenced by a number of underrated gems. Critics are often unkind to horror movies, even when there is no real justification for it. Like comedies, horror movies have traditionally been viewed as a lower art form than dramas. Despite the critical reevaluation horror cinema has undergone in recent decades, movies from the genre are more likely to go underappreciated by reviewers.

There are some movies that are so absurd and bizarre, that we can't help but be intrigued by them. And a movie about a killer sloth is certainly one of them. Slotherhouse toys with many genres, and offers up a slasher/animal attack movie not to miss. It's utterly ridiculous. But what do you expect when you tune into a horror comedy movie with an agile, acrobatic, highly intelligent, and incredibly strong sloth, slaughtering an entire sorority house in the most hilarious ways possible? By the trailer and synopsis alone, you know exactly what to expect.
While Slotherhouse undoubtedly has a few issues, mainly some weird dialogue (which would be horrendously awkward elsewhere but actually kind of fits in this campy film), Slotherhouse is at the end of day one of the most entertaining flicks of 2023.
Throughout the past decade, we have seen some pretty outlandish and ridiculous animal attack movies.

Cocaine Bear might have taken the pop culture world by storm earlier this year, but there's an even more thrilling killer animal movie coming soon in Slotherhouse. While Cocaine Bear might have gained immense attention, especially since it was based on a true story, the concept of killer animals as movie antagonists is nothing new. Jaws may have put the subgenre on the map, but killer animal movies have existed since the 1920s. In fact, Cocaine Bear wasn't even the first of its kind to follow a bear; that accolade went to 1976's Grizzly.
Though considered "animal horror," the subgenre is encompassed by a more extensive range of living creatures who traditionally target humans. Before Jaws, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds served as one of the best mainstream killer animal movie releases. As the decades went on, there were movies centered on all types of natural horrors, including insects (Them!

Monster movies and creature features are among the best horror sub-genres, boasting some incredibly iconic films. Movies like Jaws, Tremors, and Nope have shown stories centered around monsters to be incredibly versatile and entertaining. However, the genre is also incredibly vulnerable to absurd films that end up being so terrible that they become sources of memes and mockery among fans.
Many fans of the genre enjoy the more ridiculous monster movies, and they're often a source of unwitting comedy for audiences. Whether it's hammed up, awful acting, silly-looking practical effects, or a mismatch between themes in the movie, some have developed cult statuses for being so terrible they're great. Much like movies like The Room, these films gained new life from audiences loving their low-quality nonsense.

Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!

It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

The scene where Robert Shaw gets eaten in “Jaws” is one of the most thrilling moments in movie history. After all of Steven Spielberg’s virtuoso framing and cool ’70s Hitchcock scare tactics, the shark’s big-mouthed consumption of a man who fully deserves to be eaten had a shockingly raw “Look, there it is!” exploitation-film brazenness. (One not inaccurate way to describe “Jaws” would be to call it the greatest B-movie ever made.) “The Flood,” an alligator-attack movie that’s also a violent prison-break thriller, takes its cue from that scene. Set in a backwater Louisiana police station during a hurricane, the film isn’t shy about serving up its big, nasty human-torso-meets-jaws moments. It’s basically a slasher movie with teeth.
The alligator thriller, of course, was always a bargain-basement knockoff of “Jaws” — literally, since the alligators are inevitably slithering out of some basement somewhere. But it was...

If you weren’t able to catch director Elizabeth Banks’ horror comedy Cocaine Bear in theaters, Peacock has you covered. The viral film will stream exclusively on the platform beginning April 14th.
Inspired by the 1985 true story of a curious black bear who got into over 800 pounds of blow dumped over a Georgia national park, Cocaine Bear features a stacked cast led by Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and a posthumous performance from Ray Liotta.

On February 24, 2023, Universal released “Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks‘ comedy-horror flick that raked in $22 million its opening weekend. An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine. The film, which currently holds a score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, has garnered generally positive reviews.
The critics consensus reads, “Despite Cocaine Bear‘s half-baked plot and uneven acting, the titular fur fiend’s scene-snorting frenzy will give B-movie enthusiasts a contact high.” The ensemble cast (beyond VFX-driven “Cokey” the bear) includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale and the late Ray Liotta. Despite its strance concept of a bear ingesting cocaine and going on a killing spree, Cocaine Bear actually continues a strange February trend. Written and directed by actress Elizabeth Banks, it's loosely based on the true story of drug smuggler Andrew Thornton's stash of 75 pounds of cocaine which, after dropping from a plane along the Georgia-Tennesse border, was partially consumed by a mountain bear. In that instance, the only person harmed was Thornton after parachuting into the forest, but Banks imagines the wild ride that might have happened if a 500-pound black bear got a hold of much of the merchandise and encountered hikers, campers, and park rangers.
Like an ode to the horror action comedies of the '90s and early '00s such as Lake Placid, Snakes on a Plane, and Sharknado, Cocaine Bear combines a strong cast with dark humor and an outrageous premise. Its trailer...

Opening with just 28 million, it spent its first 15 weekends atop the domestic box office, still a record for consecutive Fri-Sun frames.
What of the films that perished in the first months of 1998? For three straight months, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s Oscar-winning romance/disaster feature sunk most of the competition. This was 1998, when big movies were not expected to open before the May-to-August summer movie season. The film that dethroned “Titanic,” an expensive, grimdark adaptation of “Lost in Space,” was itself a surprisingly “big” movie for its early April opening weekend.
That’s not to say the films were all bad, or...

2022 saw cinema come back in full force, blasting out of a global pandemic with a hunger to tell dynamic stories, and the best trailers for 2023's movies reveal a continuation of that trend to an even greater degree. From continuous installments in big MCU franchises with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to intimate and compelling thrillers like Inside, there's something from each genre made for every taste. With fewer restrictions on production over the past year and so much variety to choose from, 2023 is shaping up to be a spectacular time for movies.
2023 has already started strong with Avatar: The Way of Water, and boasts a lot of tentpole blockbusters like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse later in the year. While first looks have already been given to movies like Mission: Impossible - Day of Reckoning, Part One, audiences might have to...

Who doesn't love a good crossover? Besides the fact that they settle nerds' constant debates of "who would win in a fight between ___ and ___?," there's something so exciting about seeing the main characters of two or more different franchises coming together for the first time ever. Another reason why crossovers have so much appeal with audiences is that there are often legal reasons why characters from one series can't mingle with those of another, making the times when they do meet on the big (or small) screen all the more special.
Crossovers got a massive boost in popularity due to the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, crossovers haven't only been relegated to the superhero realm; for decades, there have been numerous other examples of fictional worlds colliding across numerous genres. In fact, well before Nick Fury appeared at the end of "Iron Man" to tell Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative,...

A new episode of The Black Sheep video series has arrived online this morning, and with this one we’re looking back at director Steve Miner‘s 1999 killer crocodile horror comedy Lake Placid (watch it Here). To find out why we think Lake Placid deserves more love than it gets, check out the video embedded above!
Scripted by David E. Kelley, Lake Placid tells the following story: When a mysterious creature violently kills a man in a Maine lake, Jack Wells, the local game warden, looks into the bizarre case, along with Sheriff Hank Keough and visiting paleontologist Kelly Scott. Looking for clues in a tooth that the beast left behind, Kelly and the others eventually locate the monster, a massive and vicious reptile eager to devour anything in its path. Can the crocodile-like creature be stopped?
The film stars Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Platt, Betty White,...

Luis Llosa's 1997 creature feature "Anaconda" is one of those rare films that many people saw, but that few people love. Unapologetically reminiscent of monster movies from the 1950s, "Anaconda" was snarfed at by the general public, earning generally negative reviews (it currently holds a 40 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and netting 11 Razzie nominations. It won none of its Razzies, "losing" to films like "The Postman" and "Batman & Robin." One may interpret the losses as a compliment or an insult. Despite the sour reception, "Anaconda" -- which starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Danny Trejo, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, and Jon Voight -- earned a massive 136 million on a mere 45 million budget. It was followed by four sequels, including a "Lake Placid" crossover film wherein the titular snake did battle with a giant crocodile.
The premise of "Anaconda" is about as complex as a cheap animal attack movie might warrant,...

The Independence Day star landed his first major role in his 30s, but has since made up for lost time. Now he’s heading to the stage in a furious satire. He talks about family, fame and how Ibsen put him in a coma
Bill Pullman was 32 years old when he starred in his first film, 1986’s Ruthless People. This is, he notes, at least a decade later than most movie stars get their big break. “The term ‘late bloomer’ sounds awfully like loser, but I guess it’s what I am,” he says. “It sounds to me like a politically correct term for: ‘You’re stupid. Why did you take so long?’”
The reason he took so long is theatre. Prior to Pullman’s Hollywood career, during which he has hopscotched from film noir (Lost Highway) and kids’ films (Casper) to horror, romcoms and a triumphant blockbuster (Independence Day...
