Scarlett Johansson is one of the most successful Hollywood actors out there. That is to be expected from a star who has acted in a plethora of famous works, including the likes of Avengers, Lucy, Her, and Lost in Translation, amongst other famous works. But that doesn’t mean that she has not faced the odd setback. Even she has had to face numerous rejections time and again, including losing out on a role to Lindsay Lohan.

Scarlett Johansson was turned down for many roles in her early days
Before Scarlett Johansson made it big as a Hollywood star, she had her fair share of struggles in the industry. It must be difficult for fans to believe that the Marriage Story star found it difficult to catch her big break very early.

Scarlett Johansson has been a star in a wide variety of films over the past thirty years. She had a prosperous early career, starring in films such as Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World (2001). However, she also had the unpleasant experience of hearing fans boo one of her career’s best films.
Yes, we are discussing Under the Skin. Despite the negative feedback, the talented actress did not let it bring her down. Instead, she sought sound advice that helped her keep things in perspective. Her career has seen critical and commercial peaks and troughs over the last 20 years, some of which are not necessarily aligned.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

"Three Days of the Condor" is one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers that came out of '70s cinema. The New Hollywood movement was in full effect with audiences turning to gritty, low-budget films for thrills outside of the failing studio system. Sydney Pollack was one of the foremost leaders of the cinematic era, and "Three Days of the Condor" was one of the final entries into its canon. The filmmaker's 1970 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" earned him his first Academy Award nomination, so "Three Days" was a highly anticipated follow-up.

It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. But there are others including two exceptional directorial debuts from celebrated veteran stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Patricia Arquette making it all a very memorable kickoff for TIFF on many fronts.
In fact this is a festival this year featuring numerous premieres of films either marking the first time an actor has gone behind the camera as Thomas and Arquette have done, respectively, with Special Presentation North Star, and the Discovery Section opener Gonzo Girl, or taking their latest shot as a director. In the coming days we will also have Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour; Viggo Mortensen’s sophomore feature The Dead Don’t Hurt; Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat; Chris Pine...

The summer movie season of 1998 actually began twelve months previously. While the Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World was still marauding around the multiplexes, a teaser trailer suddenly appeared showing a group of schoolchildren in a museum staring up in awe at the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Suddenly a gigantic lizard’s foot crashes through the ceiling and crushes the T-Rex as if it were an ant. Guess who’s coming to town…

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has sent a letter of apology to Sacheen Littlefeather, the indigenous activist who spoke on Marlon Brando’s behalf at the 1973 Oscars, calling the treatment she received for her speech “unwarranted and unjustified.”
Nearly 50 years ago, Littlefeather attended the Oscars in Brando’s place after the actor decided to boycott the ceremony out of protest for the portrayal of Native Americans in the entertainment industry. When Brando was named the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather,” Littlefeather gave a speech on Brando’s behalf declining the honor with a mix of applause and jeers, with presenters Raquel Welch and Clint Eastwood making dismissive jokes about Brando and Littlefeather’s actions later that evening.
“You made a powerful statement that continues to remind us of the necessity of respect and the importance of human dignity,” former Academy President David Rubin wrote.

David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost are producing for Skydance TV.
The Barbizon Hotel, located at 140 East 63rd St. on the Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was for several decades a female-only residential hotel for young women who came to NYC for professional opportunities. When Denis Villeneuve developed “Dune” he turned to Eric Roth to adapt Frank Herbert’s sprawling 1965 saga. Roth had already scored five Oscar nominations for adapting books for the screen, including one win for Robert Zemeckis’ Best Picture-winner “Forrest Gump.” Roth’s other Oscar adaptations include collaborations with directors David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), Michael Mann (“The Insider”), Bradley Cooper (“A Star is Born”), and Steven Spielberg (“Munich”).
Roth was not a sci-fi aficionado who adored the Herbert novel, but he saw what Villeneuve could do with it. We also discussed his joyous collaboration with another septuagenarian, Martin Scorsese, turning David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,...

Few actors have dominated movie screens in quite the same fashion as Scarlett Johansson, who will receive the 35th annual American Cinematheque Award on Nov. 18. The American Cinematheque will be honoring Participant Media with its inaugural Power of Cinema Award.
Able to bounce back and forth between massive worldwide blockbusters and critically acclaimed independent productions, the Oscar-nominated Johansson landed Academy consideration for 2019’s “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and has cemented herself as one of the most iconic women on the screen, making her a natural fit for the honor. Upcoming is the animated “Sing 2” in which she voices Ash, the female crested porcupine, one of the main characters of the toon.
Having done comedy, romance, action-spectacle, and nearly everything else in between, she never pigeonholed herself into one genre, opening herself up to various cinematic possibilities.

After going with a virtual presentation last year for 2020 honoree Spike Lee, the organization’s marquee event returns to normalcy, with its November 18 ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton where it was held last in 2019, when Charlize Theron was the recipient.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. After a year-plus shutdown due to the pandemic, the Aero just reopened June 10. The Egyptian, now under the purview of Netflix, is undergoing renovations before reopening as a venue both Netflix and American Cinematheque (on the weekends) will be using for their programming.

When most movie fans think of horses in motion pictures, they tend to gravitate naturally to Hollywood blockbusters like Hidalgo or The Horse Whisperer, or even European cinematic projects like The Mustang or The Turin Horse.
However, there are plenty of amazing Asian movies that cater for horse lovers everywhere.
Here we take a look at just some of them, and discover the ways in which Asian directors, producers, and actors go about incorporating long-nosed beasts into their movies.
Horses have long been mainstays of Asian cinema because they have been ever present in popular culture since the beginning of time Grand Prix – Yun-ho Yang
The most well-known horse racing movies tend to focus on horses and jockeys from places like the US and UK, where big races like the Grand National and Gold Cup take place.
But that is not to say that horse racing movies do not pop up in other far-flung places.

All streaming services go through a down period after the excitement of Spooky Season, it’s only natural. Thankfully with its list of new releases for November 2020, Hulu is making the best out of a barren pop culture landscape.
For starters, Hulu is premiering one of its major 2020 reboots this month as Animaniacs arrives on Nov. 20. Yakko, Wakko, Dot, and the rest of the Warner gang are set to return for this long-awaited revival of the animated classic. That’s about it as far as original series go but Hulu is also premiering original movies Greta, about climate activist Greta Thunberg on Nov. 13; and Run, a horror film starring Sarah Paulson, on Nov. 20.
Still, despite all the Animaniacs, Gretas, and Sarah Paulsons, the biggest hits this month might just be on the library content side of things. November 1 sees the arrival of some major TV properties. For starters, racy British...

This week on “The Masked Singer,” it was “a smackdown between two mammals, one amphibian and an appealing fruit” … sue me, I quoted from the open. Nick Cannon sparkled, literally, in a glitter tux as he introduced guest panelist Sharon Osbourne. She even noticed his shiny duds, I just wish his clothes fit better, but I digress. It was the Frog vs. the Kitty up first, but who is that kitty cat? Below, we analyze the clues.
See Bret Michaels (‘The Masked Singer’ Banana) unmasked interview: ‘I’ve never had such a great time’ and ‘Banana fans are awesome!’
Kitty claimed she has the strategy of kindness — and that she’s about to show her true colors tonight! Well she did sing Cyndi Lauper’s signature tune “True Colors.” The kitty commanded the stage with a lovely alto and an amazing stage presence in that cat ballroom costume. She’s...

To be a Georgian male is to be masculine—especially in dance. Merab’s (Levan Gelbakhiani) teacher Aleko (Kakha Gogidze) demands that he stand straighter and stronger, a monument that can withstand any blow. While his country’s aesthetic had allowed for a softer tone, conservative tradition prevailed a half century ago to move things back to the rigid separation of gendered movement and the complete erasure of sexuality. How Aleko’s dancers perform becomes a visual metaphor for their nation. It will not be defeated. It will not show weakness. And anyone who dares to refuse giving one hundred...

The Call of the Wild plays like the kind of live-action movie Disney released in the ’60s and ’70s, then in the ’80s and ’90s under the Touchstone banner. This film, adapted from the Jack London novel of the same name, was developed as a 20th Century Fox project, before the studio got scooped up by the Mouse House.
Directed by Chris Sanders and starring Harrison Ford, the playful-yet-nostalgic tone is established early on. We meet a dog named Buck, the live-action/CGI hybrid lead of the story, as he bounds about a luxurious California home. His owner, Judge Miller, loves the pet but is tired of his hyperactive shenanigans. Buck eats up a celebratory feast because he just can’t help himself, the rascal! He appears to be a creature destined for bigger things. If those last two sentences read a bit cheesy, consider it a fair approximation of the film itself.

The Toronto International Film Festival gives, and takes away. Toronto’s notoriously friendly audiences are not to be trusted entirely — with the exception of the People’s Choice Award, which has gone to such Best Picture winners as “Chariots of Fire,” “American Beauty,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The King’s Speech,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Green Book.”
So when TIFF audiences give a standing ovation, you have to figure out what it means. They enthusiastically applauded Netflix’s “Marriage Story” with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson on hand, which continues to build momentum from Venice to Telluride and Toronto, followed by New York, where it will play like gangbusters on its home turf. (It’s sitting at 96 on Metacritic.)
Never-nominated Johansson is duking it out in the Best Actress race with thrice-nominated Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger (“Cold Mountain”), who channels emotional wreck Judy Garland at the end of her tragic life in “Judy.

The Mustang premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was appropriate since Sundance founder Robert Redford was an executive producer, due in part to his activism for horses (see also The Horse Whisperer). Based on the real program where prison inmates learn to train wild mustangs for auction, The Mustang stars Mathias Schoenarts as Roman Coleman, in jail for an assault that left his ex-wife permanently disabled. Director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who also cowrote the script, spoke with Monsters and Critics at Sundance about The Mustang. Everyone can see The Mustang in theaters March 15. Like it or not, the awards race 2018 is already underway.
Painful as it may sound, the awards marathon is at least a 12-month proposition these days. With Sundance in the rear-view mirror, the talk of potential 2018 Oscar candidates is already underway in industry circles.
Below, Screen runs through 13 films that could be heading to the dance this time next year (the Oscars will be held one week later in 2018, on March 4).
