Elvis Presley’s 1974 minor hit “My Boy” might serve as the alternative title for The Colonel, a film bio of the King’s Svengali-like manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film is in the works from music and media producer Spencer Proffer (Chasing Trane, Gods & Monsters), producer-director Steve Binder (Elvis '68; Diana Ross In Central Park) and filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster; Paul Simon's Under African Skies tour). Production is slated for early 2018…...

Spencer Proffer, Steve Binder, Joe Berlinger join forces for 2018 production start on ‘The Colonel’.
Music and media producer Spencer Proffer, producer-director Steve Binder and filmmaker Joe Berlinger have teamed up to bring the profile of long-time music manager Colonel Tom Parker to the big screen.
Parker, who died in 1997 aged 87, was a music business entrepreneur who lived an intriguing personal life. He arrived in America as a 20-year old undocumented Dutch immigrant, and took great pains to hide his past. According to biographer Alanna Nash, he may have been involved in a murder in his native Holland.
Berlinger will direct from a screenplay based on Nash’s 2003 book The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story Of Colonel Tom Parker And Elvis Presley, published by Simon & Schuster. It was one of four books Nash authored on Presley.
The team will work from an outline developed by Nash and Berlinger, and Nash will co-write the screenplay.

Joe Berlinger has made a career of heart-hitting, intellectually provocative documentaries that also manage to be immensely entertaining. The many films he has directed, such as the Oscar-nominated "Paradise Lost" series he crafted alongside long-time colleague Bruce Sinofsky, manage to balance being educational and engaging, providing avenues for advocacy while rarely succumbing to polemicism.
His latest solo effort, "Whitey: The United States of America V. James J Bulger," tells the tangled tale of James "Whitey" Bulger, the convicted kingpin of South Boston's notorious Winter Hill Gang. Bulger's exploits were mined for Nicholson's character in "The Departed," and the figure of Whitey seems the stuff of Hollywood concoction -- street thug, gang leader, community Robin Hood, brother of a former State Senator, and fugitive on the run for a decade-and-a-half.

Slightly different take this week, as the passing of Madiba has (justifiably) captured the world's attention, while the coincidental release of a film starring Idris Elba is set to make its wide release. We were to chat about other releases, but talk of Nelson Mandela, and biopics in general, took up our allotted time. We chatted about Under African Skies, the documentary by Joe Berlinger about the recording of the Graceland record, and the political and musical circumstances that surrounded that project. I do encourage those who may dismiss it as a mere music doc to take a look at it, it very much ties in with far more nuanced take on the latter part of the Apartheid regime, and how the culture of South...

This story appears in TheWrap's EmmyWrap Reality Issue. Last year, the Emmys' Outstanding Nonfiction Special category saw a head-to-head battle between George Harrison and Paul Simon, with Martin Scorsese's "George Harrison: Living in the Material World" winning over a field that also included Joe Berlinger's "Paul Simon's Graceland Journey: Under African Skies." But wouldn't the Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones be an even more delicious battle? After all, that's a time-honored rivalry, as Keith Richards explains in the Stones doc "Crossfire Hurricane" when he talks about how manager Andrew Loog Oldham consciously positioned...

A longtime friend of the festival, Joe Berlinger has brought along with Bruce Sinofsky docu titles such as Brother’s Keeper (Sundance ’92), 1996′s Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (the first part in the trilogy), Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (Sundance ’04) and Crude (Sundance ’09). We can forgive Berlinger for getting sidetracked and not delivering Raising Hell: The Visions of Clive Barker sooner, after all, he was helping the innocent finally spring free from incarceration (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory) and he followed Paul Simon’s return to Graceland (Under African Skies). Shot in 2011 (here’s a long preview trailer), there appears to have been a little bit more work added over the years to Barker’s own creations which in sort perhaps added more girth to this docu-exploration. Park City at Midnight folks? Perhaps.

Last night, at a special event in conjunction with the AFI Fest, the nominees for the 2013 Cinema Eye Honors were announced. And once again, the titles contending for the ten feature categories, all of which focus solely on nonfiction films (to make up for the Oscars’ minimal recognition), represent the year’s best in documentaries. As someone who professionally concentrates on docs elsewhere, I tend to feel kinda useless or redundant when Cinema Eye names its nominees, because now when someone asks me what’s great this year I can just point to their list of 31 features. Of course, some of these films are only up for specific honors, like those for original music score and graphic design, and may not be quite as necessary as the six up for the top award or the 10 nominated for the Audience Choice Prize (which sadly, for publicity-sake, lacks a Justin Bieber movie like last year). Also, I...

The 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place on Sunday (September 23rd). Showtime's "Homeland" won in the Best Drama category, denying "Mad Men" a record fifth consecutive win. "Modern Family" took home its third straight Best Comedy award. Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" won its 10th consecutive Emmy, which resulted in Jon Stewart being censored during his acceptance speech for saying the F-word. Julianne Moore (pictured) won for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO's "Game Change." Moore stated: "Wow, I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down." And Jon Cryer won Best Actor for "Two and a Half Men," something he admitted was not possible with Charlie Sheen around. "The show was really structured around [Sheen's] character, so it was silly for me to be in the lead character [category]. That's changed [with Ashton Kutcher]. It's more of a partnership...

Seeing as today marks the midpoint of the year, it's time for everyone to look back over the first six months and determine what films are the best of 2012 so far. It's a great way to filter favorites into a pile that we can easily look back on in December, so we can avoid rummaging through the whole lot at the last minute when compiling our real Top Ten lists. For some it's been a difficult task already, because the earlier half of the year has been filled with stellar works; others are finding it hard to find ten favorites from a period they claim is as yet lacking in real quality films. Personally, I've been very surprised with some of my early picks, such as The Cabin in the Woods, Take This Waltz and the documentaries Under African Skies and This is Not...

Paul Simon's Graceland is an infectious, fantastically crafted record that launched for many a deep and abiding love of South African rhythms, Cajun accordion, and the remarkable A Capella richness that comes from the throats of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo troupe. To celebrate this anniversary, Sony Music has released a series of box sets, tied in with the home media release of Joe Berlinger's remarkable Under African Skies documentary. There's both a 2-disc and 4-disc set to choose from, and for collectors things get a bit frustrating. The 4 Disc set (which I unfortunately did not receive for review purposes) includes a 76-page book filled with interviews, photos, liner notes,...

HollywoodNews.com: The 38th Seattle International Film Festival, the largest and most highly-attended event of its kind in the United States concluded today with the announcement of the Siff 2012 Competition Awards and Golden Space Needle Audience Awards. The 25-day Festival, which began May 17, featured over 460 films from more than 70 countries, including 65 feature premieres (24 World, 25 North American, 16 U.S.) and over 700 screenings. Additionally, Siff brought in more than 300 directors, actors and industry professionals.
“A festival’s success is dependent on two basic principles: providing a platform for filmmakers to be celebrated and connecting them to audience members that would not otherwise be aware of their remarkable stories,” said Siff Artistic Director Carl Spence. “This year a record number of filmmakers participated in person and online with virtual Q&A’s successfully expanding the conversation around the best in cinema with passionate audiences, illuminating guests and distinguished industry in attendance.”

My pick for today's Sydney Film Festival trailer of the day is Under African Skies, which focuses on Paul Simon's seminal album Graceland. About Under African Skies: Paul Simon returns to South Africa to reunite with the musicians, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who collaborated on his mega-hit Graceland. The album's 1986 release put Simon in the eye of a storm of controversy for breaking the Un cultural boycott of the South African Apartheid regime. Prize-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and the Paradise Lost trilogy) follows Simon to South Africa for the album's 25th-anniversary celebrations, where he confronts his critics - including Artists United Against Apartheid founder Dali Tambo - and defends his appropriation of African music. Embedded below is the trailer. ...

Emmy voters received official ballots in the mail today with instructions that they must be returned by 5 Pm on June 28. However, voting can’t actually take place until ballot listings are posted at a secure Emmy address online after 6 Pm Monday, June 11th. With the race for nominations (they will be announced July 19) moving into the home stretch, campaigning is heating up — particularly at the Goldenson Theatre of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, where almost nightly screenings/panels with TV casts and creators are taking place. None are endorsed or sponsored by the Academy itself. Studios and networks rent out the space to give their shows the aura of Emmy but on invitations must specifically stress that it is not an Academy official activity. These events have been happening with regularity since April and May and will continue right up to the close of voting. Among those campaigning in...

If the weather doesn’t hold up for you, Memorial Day weekend won’t be spent grilling on the beach. But here’s the good news: There are plenty of TV marathons and specials to be found — plus, you’re being patriotic, in a way, by being an all-American couch potato. In addition to our What to Watch column (posting Sunday, and going weekly for the summer), here are some programs to keep on your radar.

The last few months has seen an explosion of exceptional music documentaries. From Under African Skies to Beware of Mr. Baker, films of breadth and clarity of vision have transcended their subject matters, demonstrating unequivocaly that a music documentary need not be a mere exercise in listing the accomplishments of a given artist and throwing in a few performance, and instead are films capable of delving into genuine issues of moral, philosophical and aesthetic concern.Kevin McDonald's take on the life of Bob Marley is done with the blessing of the late singer's family and keepers of his legacy - the film is produced by Ziggy Marley, the legend's son, and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. I had initial fears that the direct involvement of those...

Opening this week is "Dark Shadows," Tim Burton's revamp of the 1960s gothic soap opera, and thus far, reviews have not been so kind. For those looking for something a little less Burton-y, also opening this week is: "Under African Skies," the documentary chronicling the recording of Paul Simon's classic album "Graceland"; the French thriller "Sleepless Night" (see it now before it gets remade); the super violent satire "God Bless America"; and "I Wish," a film about kids which supposedly doesn't actually treat its child characters like mini-adults. Click through below for all the reviews for this week's new release from the Indiewire network. "Dark Shadows" Leonard Maltin Dark Shadows is an amusing piece of high camp, stoked by Depp’s deadpan star performance and the kind of elaborate trappings one would expect from Burton. Many will dismiss Under African Skies as just another music doc, a general catalogue of the recording of this seminal album. For me, the film nothing short of extraordinary, a probing look into role of art and politics, a stunning achievement that captures an fascinating chapter of both popular music and political turmoil. If it were merely a decent concert documentary interspersed with some interview footage, this Paul Simon fanatic would have been entirely pleased. What we get instead is, I think, something quite extraordinary. Using the politics surrounding the recording of the album in a country still under the grip Apartheid, sidestepping a well established cultural boycott to do so, Simon opened up a can of worms that this film valiantly documents. There have already...

You don't have to be a movie genius to know who will rule the box office this weekend. With "The Avengers" wiping the floor with every other blockbuster ever, audiences will likely continue to assemble. However, if you think there's a little too much life in the Joss Whedon opus, its weekend competitor, "Dark Shadows," might be more to your taste. This weekend, Tim Burton's vampiric comedy is the only new release going head-to-head against the action juggernaut. So! Let's take a look at this David vs. Goliath tale, and the box-office predictions, in Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. Nationwide Releases "Dark Shadows" What's the story? Based on the 1960s gothic television soap, "Dark Shadows" follows imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), who awakens from a 200-year slumber to settle a score with a jealous witch. Box-office prediction: While "Dark Shadows" may not have enough muscle to take out "The Avengers,...

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

In London to launch UK version of the event, actor/director accuses prime minister of having 'narrow view' of the industry
Robert Redford, the godfather of Us independent film-making, was never likely to agree with David Cameron's assessment that the British film industry should concentrate on commercially viable films. Redford, in London to promote the first UK version of his cutting-edge Sundance film festival, practically growls out what he thinks of the Pm's ideas. "That may be why he's in trouble. That's a very narrow view. I don't want to say it speaks of the man, but that doesn't speak to the broad category of film-makers and artists."
A well-preserved 75-year-old, Redford is still very much the frontman for the festival that takes place in Park City, Utah, every January, as well as leading its parent organisation, the Sundance Institute, which organises film-makers' "laboratories" across the world. His presence is...

Several days after their perplexing decision to hand out jury awards only halfway through the festival, SXSW has now ended their 2012 film run with the audience side of things. This grouping already bestowed feature film plaudits upon Annie Eastman‘s documentary, Bay of All Saints, and Megan Griffiths‘ Eden back on Tuesday, but we now have the victors in Documentary Spotlight, Narrative Spotlight, Emerging Visions, Midnighters, 24 Beats Per Second, SXGlobal, and Festival Favorites.
The only one of this bunch that we managed to catch was Matthew Lillard‘s Fat Kid Rules the World — a film that, despite its positive buzz, was not in our favor — while the rest of the titles (discounting Citadel) are ones I don’t have much, if any familiarity with; I’ll certainly end up checking out some throughout the year, depending on the ensuing reviews. That might sound like disinterest to some, but in a...

Some of the most important awards that are given out at a festival are its Audience Awards. Although they may not necessarily hold as much weight with film snobs worldwide, they at least let filmmakers know that the real film critics of the world, every day fans, are coming out and enjoying their films. Now I’m not sure why SXSW chooses to hold two separate awards shows, but nonetheless yesterday’s festival saw the announcement of the remaining Audience Award winning films (which just so happen to include my favorite ‘Citadel’). Matthew Lillard's comeback continues! On the heels of his strong supporting performance in the Oscar-lauded film "The Descendants," Lillard's directorial debut, "Fat Kid Rules the World," won the audience award for narrative feature at the South By Southwest film festival. About an overweight and suicidal teen who joins a rock band, "Fat Kid Rules the World" stars Jacob Wysocki and Billy Campbell, and features music by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
In the narrative documentary category, "Brooklyn Castle" took home the audience award. That film -- which is already earmarked for a feature film adaptation from producer Scott Rudin -- focuses on a poor, inner-city school, which just so happens to have one of the best chess teams in the country.
The Paul Simon documentary, "Under African Skies," was also honored, winning the 24 Beats Per Second award.
