Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.
Check out the Season 5 trailer of “What We Do In the Shadows”:
Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof's "Mrs. Davis" is going to be one seriously wild ride. /Film's Jacob Hall has called it "The Lonely Island riffing on Neal Stephenson," but he's also detected notes of Chuck Jones and Kurt Vonnegut. Anything this anarchic — and, praise the saints, original — in this day and age demands our attention. And if it's good, we must protect it with all our might.
It's both refreshing and frustrating to write about "Mrs. Davis" sight unseen. I'm not the most avid comic book reader or gamer nowadays, so it's exciting to know there isn't a rabid fanbase that's way ahead of me as I venture into this universe. But as a viewer who prefers to know as little as possible prior to watching a new movie or TV show, I'm tasked with laying down tracks to make it sound interesting for you, the potential Peacock subscriber.

Short of the DayVent your frustrations right here.
Sometimes you just stumble across a short film that seems like kismet, if you’re me at least, and The Letter by writers-directors-editors the Moser Brothers is one such of these films. It involves a hitman (Christopher Mur) who gets sick, but when he goes for a little healing, he discovers that his insurance company has denied his claim. For you and me this would be a nightmare of red tape, legal-ese, and bureaucratic headaches. But our hero isn’t you or me, he’s a highly-trained, super-efficient killer for hire, so he reacts, well, a little differently to the news.
This was a test film of sorts for the Mosers and their Canon 7d camera — which makes the film look great, btw, so crisp while emphasizing darker chromatic tones— and though it was made seven years ago, long before our current health care kerfuffle, it...

John McTiernan was once the king of the Hollywood action blockbuster. We’re back. With a vengeance. Just one vengeance, though. Nothing crazy. In a new year with a (slightly) new show, we’re delivering two episodes per week. Our main show will feature our standard, intelligent irreverence while our second show (which we’re calling “Vomit Draft”) is a screenwriting question supplement so that we can focus on writing every single week. To kick this new era off, Geoff and I discuss The Hateful Eight‘s limitations and the possibility that they all stem from one source. Plus, we challenge each other with film-focused hypothetical questions like: what one movie would you show aliens to illustrate the nature of humanity? and If you could choose a movie to build an expanded universe from, which one would it be? All of our answers are, of course, correct. You should follow the show (@brokenprojector), Geoff (@drgmlatulippe) and Scott (@scottmbeggs) on Twitter for more on a daily basis. Download...

What jumps to mind when you hear the phrase "Quentin Tarantino movie"? Hyperviolence? A bunch of different B-movies pastiched into something new? A lot of dialogue with a lot of bad language? That one "F" word in particular? Any of those could be right, but there's another thing many of Tarantino's movies have in common: a big, meaty role for an actor who's maybe in need of a career boost. In the case of the Tarantino movie currently in theaters, The Hateful Eight, the role is that of Daisy Domergue, a wily, foul-mouthed criminal played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Now Leigh hasn't been without work.

Don’t worry, Supergirl fans, you’re not losing your collective minds.
Though Monday’s installment of the CBS drama seems to take a giant step backwards, storytelling-wise, it’s merely the result of last week’s decision to swap “How Does She Do It?” with “Livewire” in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris.

I interviewed Takeshi Kitano, aka "Beat" Takeshi, in spring of 2001 regarding "Brother," his first film shot on American soil. Kitano is arguably, still, the biggest star in Japan, one whose influence crosscuts virtually all areas of media.
Memories: Kitano was surrounded by a small entourage of Japanese men, one of whom was his interpreter. He was formal and stoic in his interaction with me, but never unfriendly. As Sofia Coppola so deftly portrayed in "Lost in Translation," the English to Japanese process of translating can often be time-consuming for what amounts to seemingly little that's been said. Kitano rarely made eye contact or smiled, although when he would laugh softly, a crooked grin would form on one side of his mouth, the right. The other striking thing about Kitano's appearance was a tic, or slight tremor, that would appear on the left side of his face, the after-effect of a...

I got around to a lot more movies this week, beginning with last Sunday evening where I caught Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance on Encore. I know everyone pretty much loves Die Hard, but I'm not sure I don't love With a Vengeance a little more, I just love Samuel L. Jackson in that movie and Jeremy Irons is a perfect villain. Things took a bit of a dip when I went to the theater to watch The Boy Next Door, but I quickly resolved that with It Happened One Night, which became my latest Best Movies entry. Then I got a hankering to watch Strangers on a Train after it was recently announced David Fincher, Ben Affleck and Gillian Flynn were looking to put together a remake. I was also thinking it might become Best Movies entry #9, but after watching it and Robert Walker's performance...

You know what the best Die Hard is. You know what the worst is. But where do the others sit in the Die Hard league table?
A quick preamble. Over the course of the coming weeks and months, we're going to be exploring many of our favourite movie franchises, and ranking the films in order. Mainly because it gives us a further chance to talk about many of our favourite films.
Inevitably, the ordering in these cases isn't always going to come as a surprise - we go into this with the first and last place in most of these lists immediately obvious - but it's interesting to see how the movies stand in the context of each other. Police Academy week in particular should be a hoot.
When it comes to ranking the Die Hard films then, the battle is really between Die Hards 2 and 3 for second place. But...

We started this website back in 2007, and since then, the names of some sequels seem to come up with reasonable regularity, albeit with no sign of the film itself. Both men are a part of the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but what can we expect to see in this new interpretation of the Dcu? (Potential Spoilers Below)

The Die Hard series may be alive and well, but there's a unique story behind the writing of each one…
As any action fanatic will tell you, Die Hard is among the best films of its type ever made. Tautly directed by John McTiernan, deceptively well shot by cinematographer Jan de Bont, and full of charismatic turns from Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia, it’s seldom been bettered, even by its sequels.
The key to the first film's success, and the sequels in their best moments, is hero John McClane. Tough, sarcastic but ultimately human and relatable, he cuts a very different figure from the beefed-up, larger-than-life heroes of 1980s and 90s action cinema. When John McClane gets shot or injured, he actually feels pain. It's something we were keenly aware of in the 1988 original, but gradually ebbed away as the Die Hard franchise drifted from thriller territory...

Ever since Jeremy Irons was announced as the new cinematic Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans have wondered what his take on the character would be like. Irons is known for having a sort of dark, morally complex presence onscreen, with a disposition that lends itself naturally towards villainy. To hear he was taking over a role that had just been played with such vulnerability and warmth by Michael Caine seemed to signal that this would be a very different Alfred. Irons, out discussing his career after being honored at the Marrakech international film festival, added fuel to the fire.
"He is quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far," he says. Irons then added, "Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted. I would just say he's more hands-on perhaps than just a butler." The actor was also quick to caution fans,...

While Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Fives Armies hogs the New Zealand limelight, a quiet corner of the North Island houses James Cameron as he beavers away on the scripts for his next two Avatar films, currently known as Avatars 2, 3 and 4 but soon no doubt to be furnished with sexier, more descriptive titles. ‘Eywa Hard With A Vengeance’, that kind of thing.“I can tell you one thing about them,” Cameron laughs when Empire nonchalantly enquires about storylines. “They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will shit yourself with your mouth wide open.”Despite early rumours of a move to 60 frames per second, 48 is Cameron’s choice of frame rate for the sequels. “My thinking at the time was that 60 [Fps] might be a better segue to the video market,” he says. “I’ll be plugging into a system that’s a little more mature, so it makes...

Bob’s Burgers is back with a vengeance — so great a vengeance that it’s like Die Hard With a Vengeance, only with just the Die Hard part. In the season-five premiere of the Fox animated sitcom this Sunday at 7:30 p.m., Gene finally gets to fulfill his dream of mounting a Die Hard musical. The only problem is his ex-girlfriend, Courtney, who gets the school to put on a Working Girl musical. Well, it's only a problem in this fictional reality; in our reality, this is not a problem at all because we know that Bob’s Burgers has a way with musicals.

It was only a matter of time before Warner Bros figured out a way to relaunch I Am Legend as a franchise. The studio has been itching to do something with the property ever since the 2007 film raked in $586 million worldwide. They've attempted to get sequels off the ground, and even prequels- which would bring Will Smith back as Robert Neville. Nothing came of those previous attempts, and Smith's reluctance to return likely aided that.
Now the Warners may have found the answer...with a script that's not even based on that film or the 1954 book it was adapted from. Earlier this year, they bought a script by unknown writer Gary Graham. At the time, he was working as a sales associate at the Apple Store in midtown Manhattan. They found his script, "A Garden At The End of The World," on the Black List and loved it. In the coming months,...

Exclusive: After years of trying, Warner Bros finally has found a way to extend its hit Will Smith last-man-on-Earth blockbuster I Am Legend into a potential new franchise. The studio is working on a reboot that isn’t meant to star Smith, who has been reluctant to do sequels and so far has avoided a reprise in Independence Day 2. Warner is retrofitting A Garden At The End Of The World, a spec script that the studio bought back in April from Gary Graham, who was working at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan when he posted his script on the Black List website and got the attention of CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver. They signed him and sent his script out. Amid several bids, Warner Bros acquired what was described as a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers. When Graham was brought in to rewrite his script, the...

It isn.t a short sequence, either. The final confrontation between Denzel Washington.s do-gooder and the Russian enforcer he.s opposing is a lengthy, choreographed battle of wits, brawn and endurance that takes place, fittingly, in a big-box tool warehouse. It.s also the closest thing we have seen to a worthy successor to Die Hard since John McTiernan.s rocket-powered sequel, Die Hard With a Vengeance. I.m not saying that The Equalizer, which holds its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is yet another in a tiresome parade of Die Hard clones. It isn.t. Antoine Fuqua and his Training Day lead revive...

Let’s look back on twenty years’ worth of Pulp Fiction trivia and behind the scenes fun. You never know when they will release a Pulp Fiction Trivial Pursuit game right? Also, there are magnificent spoilers here, so you should probably watch the movie first and slap yourself for taking this long.
Here is some music to accompany you.

Chronologically speaking, the last scene in the movie sees Butch and Fabienne drive away on a motorcycle. The very first sound heard at the start of the movie is the same motorcycle’s engine.
Whenever Vincent Vega goes to the bathroom, something bad happens: He emerges at Mia Wallace’s house to find her overdosing, comes out at the restaurant to find a robbery unfolding and is shot dead by Butch after using his bathroom. The moral is…holding it in saves lives?
When Butch shoots Vincent Vega,...

So yeah. Yesterday on twitter I dropped this little tidbit on Die Hard 6…
Twitter Scoop: Fox is meeting writers for takes on next Die Hard. It has to involve John McClane And Samuel Jackson’s Zeus Carver character!
— elmayimbe (@elmayimbe) April 14, 2014
…and then it blew up all over my colleagues outlets. Like Boom!
You see, I hear lots of tidbits almost every day. Most of them I don’t even think are newsworthy, hence why I do the twitter scoop thing instead because although not newsworthy, pretty cool regardless.
I guess I was wrong. I need to run more stuff by Kellvin.
So to elaborate a tad further on my tweet, basically Fox is taking meetings with writers to come up with a take on Die Hard 6. You see, studios are always in development on their projects and take meetings with writers to see if something sticks. Die Hard 6 is...

When “A Good Day to Die Hard” came out early last year, it was easily the least successful film of the franchise. The movie was critically reviled and only raked in $67 million in the U.S. box office. You would think 20th Century Fox would take this as a sign that they should finally put this franchise to rest, but “A Good Day to Die Hard” somehow managed to become an international hit with $237 million alone. So, of course, that means we’re getting a sixth 'Die Hard' film. If you’re a huge fan of the franchise, however, this rumor may actually perk your interest in a sixth 'Die Hard' film. According to a scoop from Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, Fox is currently meeting with writers for pitches on a new 'Die Hard' film with the intention of reuniting John McClane with his “Die Hard With a Vengeance” partner,...

Rumor has it that Fox is looking into a Die Hard 6 and is currently meeting with potential writers, hoping to find the right pitch for the story. Now, before you groan at the fact that the studio is trying to spit out another movie in a franchise that hasn’t seen a good entry since Die Hard With a Vengeance, listen to this. In order to re-capture the magic of the aforementioned sequel (which truly was the last good Die Hard film), they’re hoping to bring back Samuel L. Jackson to reprise his role as Zeus Carver.
The news comes to us from a Tweet, courtesy of Latino Review, who can be pretty hit or miss on their scoops. There hasn’t been any word from Fox on this as of yet, so we’d advise that you take it with a grain of salt. If it is true,...

Samuel L Jackson's Zeus Carver may be back for the sixth and final Die Hard movie...
We do not have fond memories of watching A Good Day To Die Hard. The fifth Die Hard film was, for our money, a lumbering mess, and a travesty when you consider the high point from where the Die Hard franchise started. John McClane was now basically Bruce Willis, with the things that defined the character pretty much long gone. It iced the cake that it was cut to get a 12A certificate in the UK.
And yet the film did decent business. Overcoming hostile reviews, A Good Day To Die Hard took $304m in cinemas worldwide (although only $67m of that came in the Us). And that meant that the promised Die Hard 6 - the film that's expected to close of John McClane's screen adventures - was likely to happen.

Great casting news comes from Warner Bros. Pictures today, as they announce that Jeremy Irons (The Borgias, Die Hard With a Vengeance) will be playing the role of Alfred and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) will be Lex Luthor in the upcoming movie formerly known as Batman vs Superman.
That’s right, it’s apparently no longer Batman vs. Superman but is now The Untitled Superman/Batman Movie. Not as catchy, really. Maybe, though, it will be something more in keeping with what looks like a Superman movie with some Batman and Wonder Woman involvement. Note that the release says the script is currently being written. We shall see.
Also please note that there is no mention of Jason Momoa, nor of anyone else playing a villainous role other than Eisenberg as Luthor, but there is confirmation of the return of Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne.

After last week’s onslaught of new stuff, it was perhaps inevitable that this week would be something of a comedown with not much going on. There is some worthwhile new stuff added, the John Milius documentary for one which has debuted on Lovefilm the same time as DVD more or less and, of course, a contender for the worst film of all time. I have used this opportunity to catch up on some titles that were added last week and I didn’t have space for which are definitely worth writing about. I hope you enjoy.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers from this Wednesday’s episode of Arrow.
The twists flew as fast as the vigilante’s spears on Wednesday’s fall finale of Arrow.
While a captured Roy survived the hour (just barely), Oliver still lost someone back on the island when Ivo shot Shado.
And death kept coming as Tommy made a haunting appearance — and then Slade was revealed to be alive in Starling City and up to no good!

CBS’ Criminal Minds this Wednesday scared up 12.3 million total viewers and a 2.8 demo rating, rising 6 percent and a tenth to hit and tie season highs.
Opening the Eye’s night, Survivor (10.1 mil/2.4) added a few eyeballs but dipped a tenth in the demo. And CSI closed things out with 11 mil/2.1, rising 5 percent and two tenths.
Elsewhere….
ABC | The Middle (8.4 mil/2.2) and Back in the Game (6.1 mil/1.6) both lost some viewers and slipped two tenths in the demo, with the latter hitting a season low. Modern Family (10 mil/3.3) was down 7 and 13 percent, while Super Fun Night (5.7 mil/1.9) inched down a tenth.

Despite the fact that the recent fourth sequel (released earlier this year as A Good Day To Die Hard) failed to impress both fans and critics alike, it seems that Hollywood – and Bruce Willis himself – are still keen to get iconic hero John McClane back in the saddle one last time. At least, we hope it’ll be the last time. The fifth sequel to 1988′s Die Hard, currently going by the working title “Die Hardest,” will focus on Willis’ sardonic New York cop as he attends an anniversary dinner in Tokyo, Japan, to celebrate his heroic acts at the Nakatomi Plaza 30 years previously.
Of course, it’s expected that things won’t pan out quite as McClane expects them to – less cake and champagne, more guns and explosions. As of now, more details are confined to just speculations, with pretty much every character to have ever appeared in the...

The singer inspires impassioned onstage chaos on the first of a two-night stand at Los Angeles' Belasco Theatre.
As M.I.A. exited the stage of the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Monday night, she literally dropped the mic. The singer had just offered an aggressive 90-minute onslaught of music and lights, climaxing with the song "Sexodus," and then mumbled something into her microphone as she strutted out.
It was an appropriate conclusion to the performance, which mashed the singer’s past hits like “Galang” and “Bucky Done Gun” with tracks from her intense new album, Matangi. She left little room to breathe between songs, each segueing into the next with a jangled blitz of in-your-face beats and stomach-churning bass.
The set was heralded by two unidentified DJs, neither of whom were billed on the show. As of 4:00 p.m. on the day of the show, there was,...

Let's all take a moment to reconsider Death to Smoochy, because as Edward Norton proved last night, he is a damn fine comedian. In his first-ever stint hosting Saturday Night Live, the actor had flawless timing and total commitment to his characters – even the dumb ones, like a mob money-counter who talked like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man (which was basically Norton re-creating his own performance in The Score). The two-time Oscar nominee delivered some terrifically quotable one-liners: "What would I do for a Klondike bar? I'd suck anything you put in front of me.

The femmes are fierce in Arrow Season 2 (premiering Wednesday at 8/7c) — and we’ve got photographic evidence.
As previously reported, Oliver’s ex Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) — blaming the metaphorical “crossfire between two archers” for Tommy’s tragic death — has made it her mission “to bring down the Arrow” aka the last archer standing, says showrunner Andrew Kreisberg. And from the look of one sequence below, she has her prey in sight when she summons a cavalry.

Why is GTA V the most popular piece of entertainment of the year, we wonder, when 18-rated films are so rare in mainstream cinema?
Against a backdrop of critical adulation and laser-guided marketing, Grand Theft Auto V has made a fortune. Shifting 2.25m copies in the UK alone, its worldwide sales have already passed the $1bn mark, and could well be - to borrow an oft-repeated headline - the fastest-selling piece of entertainment in history.
At its heart, GTA V is a gangster heist story about three violent yet very different characters and their life of crime in a fictional American city. It's an aggressive, slick and blackly comic fable about "the pursuit of the almighty dollar", as its developer put it in 2011.
Placing all the excitement, praise and predictable ripple of controversy aside, GTA V raises some worthwhile questions about current tastes in mainstream entertainment.
