Locked and loaded with a decent screenplay, Michael Winner and Charles Bronson acquit themselves well in this brutal 1974 hit that launched a decade’s worth of nasty vigilante movies. The lynch-mob formula presents crimes so awful that the audience demands violent retribution. The shock is that this incitement to ‘fight back’ is not direct right-wing propaganda — vigilantism is glamorized but not endorsed. A fine supporting cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats and unexpected treats like Olympia Dukakis and Jeff Goldblum. “Fill your hand!”

Rarovideo is back, with an excellent Italo war drama that finds humanist values in an appalling situation: a young Italian lieutenant is tasked with distributing 12 Athenian prostitutes to garrisons on the road back to Italy, to ‘service’ the troops. It’s a mixed group — a couple of the women have signed up to avoid starvation. The trek takes them directly into partisan conflict. Sympathetic director Valerio Zurlini assembles a terrific international cast: Mario Adorf, Anna Karina, Tomas Milian, Marie Laforêt, Lea Massari, Valeria Moriconi and Milena Dravic.

Italian cultural icon Raffaella Carrà’s life is to be spotlighted in a documentary from Fremantle.
Carrà, who died earlier this year aged 78, was known as the “lady of Italian television” and had a seven-decades-long career as an actress, recording artist, presenter, model and, later, a symbol of liberation and women’s rights.
Fremantle has taken the exclusive global option rights from the official rights owner and will forge an in-depth documentary, spearheaded by Group COO Andrea Scrosati, Italy CEO Gabriele Immirzi, Spain CEO Nathalie Garcia, Global Head of Documentaries Mandy Chang and Italian Head of Documentaries Alessandro De Rita. In Cinema Retro's never-ending quest to analyze relatively inconsequential movies, the trail takes us to Dirty Dingus Magee, one of Frank Sinatra's last starring feature films. The movie shocked critics when it opened in 1970 due to the trivial of the production. Time has done nothing to enhance its reputation and one can only wonder what possessed Sinatra to star in this tepid Western comedy. In reality, Sinatra's passion for movie-making was also tepid. He always preferred to concentrate on his singing career and regarded acting as a time-consuming sideline. His penchant for rarely approving a second take became legendary. Nevertheless, he was undeniably one of the cinema's great icons. Prior to Dirty Dingus Magee, Sinatra had shown good judgment with the majority of the films he made during the mid-to-late Sixties. There were some misguided efforts but Von Ryan's Express, Tony Rome, Lady in Cement...

Marlon Brando had few if any hits in the 1960s, but this wartime spy picture is a not-bad thriller with some tense moments. Both Brando and Yul Brynner have been blackmailed into a risky mission as spy and sea captain; they’re more than a little disillusioned to find themselves transporting a boatload of Nazis and political prisoners headed back to Germany. Persecuted victim Janet Margolin is beyond caring — she’s a victim on a voyage of the damned.

It’s tendon-biting combat, with guns, trains, planes, chainsaws, and an indestructible all-terrain vehicle (that still couldn’t stand the potholes in the street of Los Angeles)! Rod Taylor, Jim Brown and Yvette Mimieux blast their way through one of the roughest of the ’60s action spectacles, as mercenaries on a mission of mercy that’s really a venal grab to ‘rescue’ a fortune in diamonds. Director Jack Cardiff pushed the limits of acceptability on this one — legends persist about longer, more egregiously violent cuts.

Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard star in this classic war drama directed by Mark Robson. When Us pilot Colonel Joseph Ryan (Sinatra) is shot down and placed in a German prisoner of war camp, he is more concerned with his own survival than escape. The top-ranking officer in the camp, he is initially reviled by his fellow British and American prisoners, who nickname him Von Ryan. However, Ryan eventually comes to lead them in a daring escape attempt, taking over from the commanding British officer (Howard), and the escapees face many hazards as they commandeer a train to make their way across Italy, closely followed by the Nazis.

‘Things Blowing Up Good’ has been surefire entertainment since the beginning of cinema, but this ill-fated Cinerama extravaganza about the biggest explosion in recorded human history limps along despite some pretty darned impressive volcanic effects. It’s quite an entertaining spectacle, with various good performers in three soap opera plots, either overacting or loitering about with nothing to do. And don’t forget the from-left-field musical striptease.

Rock Hudson is an American commando sent to blow up a dam in “Hornets’ Nest,” a 1970 WWII action adventure set in 1944 Italy as the Allies advance on the German occupation force. Directed by Phil Karlson (“Hell to Eternity,” “Kid Galahad,” “The Silencers,” “The Wrecking Crew” and “Walking Tall”), the movie was an American-Italian co-production filmed in Italy with a mostly all Italian cast and crew.
The movie opens as the residents of Reanoto are massacred by German soldiers after they refuse to give up the location of Italian resistance fighters. Meanwhile, American commandos parachute in on a mission to blow up a nearby dam, but all are killed except for Capt. Turner (Hudson). A group of boys hiding in the hills when the German’s murdered their families rescue Turner and hide him from the Germans. Trains in cinema have always made for an excitable source within the realm of the comedy, drama, mystery or suspense pertaining to the plot of a particular film. The setting for the featured trains as the driving force of entertainment serves as the heart and soul of the action for the most part.
In some cases using trains as a last minute symbolic theme for a film can generate great impact that thrives and questions the motives and urgency of the characters and storyline (i.e. the climax scene in The Defiant Ones where the salt-and-pepper escaped convicts Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier try and make a desperate dash for permanent freedom on a speeding train en route to permanent freedom). Perhaps a train could also add an extra element of action-packed excitement in a film’s conclusive ending such as the uncontrollable commuter train in Speed?

This week sees the release of George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" (read our review here), which carefully follows the template of what's come to be known as the men-on-a-mission movie, and has been around even before the Second World War came to a close. The recipe is simple: take a bunch of men (the more ill-suited and quarrelsome the better), give them an objective—killing Hitler, looting Nazi gold, saving Private Ryan, protecting crucial work of arts from destruction by the Germans—and send those men on the mission. It's proved a consistently popular genre over the years, with plenty of classics or near-classics, including "The Guns Of Navarone," "The Dirty Dozen," "Von Ryan's Express," "Where Eagles Dare," "The Eagle Has Landed," "A Bridge Too Far," or more recently, "Inglourious Basterds." But there's also a fair few that aren't spoken about in the same measure that might deserve to be,...

Depending on the depths of the vault of the studio, DVD anthologies centered around the works of a specific actor or director can be entirely hit-or-miss. Fox’s Frank Sinatra Film Collection is no exception to that rule, in that it embodies both sides. Though it doesn’t have some of his enduring classics like Ocean’s 11 or Guys and Dolls (which is owned by MGM – just not included here), it has the celebrated The Manchurian Candidate as its flagship film, sandwiched between a number of his detective films, the war and action smash Von Ryan’s Express, along with a few of his more generic, middle-of-the-road jaunts. The set as a whole averages out to be pretty good, and considering it’s about one sixth of his filmography, it’s an impressive haul for the price (at about $3.50 per movie).

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

There's very little we can say about the indomitable Ol' Blue Eyes that hasn't already been said, but suffice it to say, Frank Sinatra is one of the most successful entertainers of all time, effortlessly transitioning back and forth between his music and acting careers.
On April 3rd, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases the rather impressive "The Frank Sinatra Film Collection" on DVD.
Films include Stanley Kramer's "The Pride and the Passion" co-starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren, "Kings Go Forth" with Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood, Frank Capra's "A Hole in the Head," "Can-Can," featuring Shirley MacLaine, John Frankenheimer's classic "The Manchurian Candidate," "Von Ryan’s Express," "Cast a Giant Shadow" starring Kirk Douglas, Yul Brynner and John Wayne among others, "Tony Rome" (featuring a score by Lee Hazlewood), its sequel, "Lady in Cement" co-starring Raquel Welch, and "The Detective."
