Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

Kung Fury— a 2015 English-language Swedish martial arts comedy film— is weirdly entertaining, the average critics’ consensus certified the movie fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 86% score. Also, fans have showered their love for the David Sandberg (not to be confused with Shazam! director) written and directed movie.
Jorma Taccone as Adolf Hitler in Kung Fury
As the movie claimed the astounding accolades, there was inherently another installment in the making. The sequel of the Sandberg-led movie who played the title character, also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, Kung Fury 2 has never seen the light of day. Jorma Taccone played the notorious historical figure, Adolf Hitler and the actor was heartbroken as the movie was hidden from the public forever.

Any action fan, or even dedicated viewer of Corridor Crew's "Stuntmen React" series, should know the name Scott Adkins. Long before Adkins went all out for his role as German gangster Killa Harkan in "John Wick: Chapter 4," the British stunt performer and actor made a name for himself working as a stuntman for prominent Hong Kong action directors in the early 2000s. He went on to appear in dozens of action movies, from starring opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in four separate films to doubling for Ryan Reynolds' Weapon XI in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." For his role as Gunnery Sergeant Barton Geddes in 2019's "Ip Man 4: The Finale," Adkins said star Donnie Yen — who also faced off against Keanu Reeves in "John Wick: Chapter 4" — requested him for the film by name.
Having remained somewhat of a B-movie action star for most of his career, Adkins is finally starting to get more mainstream recognition.

Ian McKellen is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. Over the course of his lengthy career, he established himself as a force to be reckoned with, achieving so much through his acting career that he was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His versatility knows no limitations, having starred in many different kinds of roles and movies from all genres.
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandolf in The Hobbit
Considering just how talented and successful he is, it is not surprising that the actor is offered many different types of roles. Sometimes that may be through lesser-known sources, and others they may be very high-profile projects.
It would seem that the actor was asked to be a part of Tom Cruise’s iconic film series, Mission: Impossible, being offered the role of Commander Swanbeck in the second movie. Interestingly enough, the actor rejected this offer due to one reason.

The recent films released by Marvel Studios have suffered a great amount of disappointment due to their box-office failure and negative critical reviews. It seems the trend in the franchise went on the downhill path after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame
There’s no denying that Endgame was the culmination of the stories that fans loved for eleven years. The franchise that started with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and ended with his sacrifice emerged as the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. How can any of the new Marvel films beat that?

Halle Berry’s portrayal of Storm, the legendary X-Men character, is a testament to her versatility and talent as an actress. Berry not only brought the beloved comic book mutant to life but also left a lasting impact on fans worldwide through her performance in the X-Men movies from 2000-2014.
Halle Berry as the X-Men mutant Storm
However, despite being synonymous with the X-Men franchise, Halle Berry’s role in the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past was significantly reduced. Although Berry was initially supposed to feature prominently in the 2014 sequel, things changed. Surprisingly, fans couldn’t blame the studio for it.

Universal Pictures has tapped renowned British filmmaker Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers) to write and direct a Leonardo da Vinci film based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling 2017 biography of the artist, Deadline can confirm.
Based on thousands of pages from Da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, the biography looks to connect his art to his science, showing how Leonardo’s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy.
An icon of the Italian Renaissance, Da Vinci was not only a prolific painter but also a polymath excelling in various fields including science, engineering, and anatomy. His masterpieces, the “Mona Lisa,” and “The Last Supper” are among the most recognizable and influential works of art in history.
Christopher Hampton wrote a previous draft of the Da Vinci script.

Any prequel to the Alien series would face a challenge. If we forget for a moment that Alien 3 ever happened, the first two films in the series were absolute classics. They are as influential today as they were when they were first released in 1979 and 1986, respectively.
The main problem with 2017's Alien: Covenant was a departure from what made those two movies so good.
Too much tech, not enough tension
Alien and Aliens are big movies that benefited from an almost B-movie feel. Of course, filmmaking was very different when Ridley Scott's directing career was in its infancy, but you get the sense that he wasn't just working within constraints – he really understood his craft.
Alien: Covenant embraced CGI to such an extent that it often felt like it was so far removed from the originals that it was a different franchise. You certainly wouldn't have guessed that...

When Tony Scott died in 2012, he left behind more than a few unfinished projects, including a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s iconic Western, The Wild Bunch.
L.A. Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland was attached to write the script for the remake of The Wild Bunch for Tony Scott, and he spilled a few details about the project while speaking with Inverse, including that it would have been set in the modern day.
“I also wrote 45 pages of The Wild Bunch for Tony to direct before he died. Sadly, I always say that I’m still on page 45 of that project,” Helgeland said. “It’s pretty violent and set in the modern day. The plot revolves around L.A. rampart cops that were being sent to prison, but during the trial, they’re still technically free. So, they decide to head down to Mexico and rob a bank before scattering to the...

Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

Since 1980, horror and sci fi fans have loved being scared by the Xenomorph and the soulless Weyland-Yutani corporation that wants to study it. Nearly everyone has controversial takes on various films in the franchise: "Prometheus" and Assembly Cut "Alien 3" fans, rise up. "Alien: Covenant" fans, look... we respect you, but that movie makes it tough. But no matter where you land, we're all in love with Ridley Scott's original "Alien." It's a love that's seen high school performances turn into breakout hits, and April 26th (chosen for the Lv-426 colony in "Aliens") become a fandom holiday.
We're always looking for more to explore from the franchise, although sometimes that desire turns into a be-careful-what-you-wish-for "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" situation. Despite the valleys of the "Alien" franchise, we're still hoping for the best from the upcoming "Alien: Romulus" and Noah Hawley's forthcoming TV series from FX. Meanwhile, we...

Live-action adaptations of famous video game series are often something producers use to give a fresh feeling to the franchise. Unfortunately, these adaptations haven’t particularly been successful, and that is due to many different causes, one of them being the choice of cast.
Disappointment is a recurring term when it comes to adaptations of video games into a movie or a series, and it becomes even more saddening when it features a cast of renowned actors such as Dwayne Johnson. Following are some of the movies that the actor has done but ultimately let down the watchers.

Colin Farrell has nothing but love for his home country, saying this week that he’s proud of the recent rise in Irish actor success in Hollywood.
“I mean, we punch so far above our weight,” Farrell, a native of Castleknock, Ireland, told Entertainment Tonight. “We’re only a country of 5 million people and I don’t know, Irish people — just whether it’s through music, the written word, whether it’s prose poetry, film, theater of course, we just — we have a deep connection to.”
He added that he feels his fellow countrymen share an appreciation of “the importance of story” and for “leaning into stories and meanings with which we understand ourselves and the world around us.”
Last month, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy became the first-ever Irish-born actor to win best actor at the Oscars. “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” Murphy said from the stage.

Creating a horror prequel is trickier business than a sequel. The rules are far less rigid in sequels, with expanded body count and lore most often being the primary goals. But a horror movie prequel has the tougher needle to thread in ensuring all of its pieces nestle neatly within the previously established framework without contradicting any details.
This week brings the arrival of The Omen prequel, The First Omen, charting the events leading up to Antichrist Damien Thorn’s adoption. It makes for the perfect excuse to revisit horror prequels that successfully earned their spot in their franchises through unique shifts in setting, tone, and style without veering too far off the beaten path.
This week’s streaming picks highlight horror movie prequels that get weird or dial up the horror in intense ways while further fleshing out familiar characters and storylines.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Throughout his film career, Irish actor Michael Fassbender has been unafraid to take risks, tackling a wide variety of unusual roles, from an almost-human robot and a Ira freedom fighter to a legendary psychiatrist and a musician wearing a papier-mâche head. It’s a filmography that would daunt some actors and inspire still others, and for Fassbender, it’s a film career that has only really just begun.
Along the way, Fassbender has been able to be a part of an enviable mix of breakthrough independent films, searing personal dramas, and even a few franchise moneymakers. Most importantly, he has collaborated with such premier filmmakers as Ridley Scott, Danny Boyle and Quentin Tarantino, with perhaps the most significant relationship in his career being with with filmmaker Steve McQueen, whose three-film collaboration with Fassbender have raised the bar for each man to new artistic heights.

Beloved FromSoftware games like Elden Ring and Bloodborne almost didn’t exist. That is unless someone at the company hadn’t given Hidetaka Miyazaki a chance to save a dying project on a whim.
Yes, Miyazaki’s journey to becoming the mastermind behind FromSoftware’s hit titles is marked by a series of fortunate events and daring decisions. Thankfully, it all paid off, and we now have the immaculate Soulslike genre many have a love-hate relationship with.
How Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Sliding Doors Moment Eventually Lead to Elden Ring
We have Hidetaka Miyazaki’s insane luck to thank for the Soulslike genre.
In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki revealed how a career change and a failing project led to the birth of a groundbreaking gaming genre.
Miyazaki’s path to FromSoftware was unconventional. At 29, deemed too old for graduate positions and lacking experience elsewhere, he found refuge at the studio.

Many of us were excited about the prospect of The New Mutants a few years ago. The sales pitch of an “X-Men horror movie” sounded like a match made in heaven. As often happens, the film that was released was far more of a pillow fight than the cage match I’d hoped for.
But as we excitedly embrace the kid in us with the release of X-Men ’97 on Disney+, I couldn’t help but imagine a more adult side of that universe. What if the X-Men franchise embraced the opportunity to lean into the horror genre? I’m talking about the body horror of its mutants, the cruelness of its villains, and the potential for superhumanly violent finishers that would make Mortal Kombat blush. With all that in mind, I took a look through the original X-Men films on a horror scavenger hunt and found some pretty cool trinkets along the way.

Deadpool & Wolverine could finally answer one thing about Logan, a film that was a loose adaptation of the Old Man Logan miniseries. In the film, we saw the sorry state of mutant-kind in the wake of the X-Men and other heroic factions, but it did beg one question: Where were the non-heroic mutant factions of the Fox-verse?
Hugh Jackman as Logan in Logan
What in particular has perplexed fans is what happened to Magneto, whose faction would have made it very difficult for mutant kind to be hunted the way it was in the film. Deadpool & Wolverine might be able to give us some answers with regards to this, given that the film might be jumping timelines and universes. It would finally be able to explain what exactly happened to Magneto and his faction of pro-mutant fighters.

The Apple TV+ limited series “Masters of the Air” is not exactly lacking in big-name star power. The World War II-era drama is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the powerhouse team behind two previous Emmy-winning series about America’s greatest generation: 2001’s “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And headlining the cast is Austin Butler, fresh off his Oscar-nominated star turn in “Elvis.”
However it is British actor Callum Turner who emerges as the real star of this ensemble drama, which just concluded its nine-episode run. As the free-spirited, occasionally volatile Major John “Bucky” Egan, Turner gives a haunting performance that both anchors “Masters of the Air” and allows the series to take flight.

Alien is returning to the big screen, this time sans Ridley Scott in the director’s chair or Michael Fassbender’s android with a God complex. Shepherding the franchise forward into a new era is Fede Alvarez, the director behind the 2013 remake of Evil Dead and the 2016 slasher Don’t Breathe. As revealed in the first trailer for the film, Alien: Romulus looks like a return to the roots of the series: a space station and its crew, including star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), run afoul of a swarm of facehuggers and all hell breaks loose.
The situation is very reminiscent of Ripley’s own nightmare on the Nostromo back in the 1979 original, and it’s clear shots of Spaeny’s character Raines armed with a Pulse Rifle are meant to evoke memories of Aliens, too. That’s on purpose, of course, since the movie is not only bringing back the aesthetics...

At the risk of barging too hot out the gate, I'm going to co-sign Chris Evangelista's argument for /Film that there are no bad "Alien" movies. Sure, the various follow-ups to Ridley Scott's classic 1979 original can be polarizing -- especially Scott's gothic prequel films "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" -- but they're never boring, and "Alien" itself remains the rare IP where each individual entry retains the hallmarks of the directors who made them. As though any other franchise would ever let Jean-Pierre Jeunet come in and make a no-holds-barred Jean-Pierre Jeunet sci-fi horror film like "Alien: Resurrection." Just sayin'.
For as much as I would've liked it if Scott got to finish telling the story of the beloved homicidal android David (Michael Fassbender) with his intended prequel trilogy finale "Alien: Awakening," I'm curious to see what Fede Álvarez comes up with playing in this particular sandbox. The "Evil Dead...

27 years after he was last seen in X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men '97 heralds the return of one of the mutant team's greatest adversaries - Magneto.
The backstory for Erik Lehnsherr (aka Magneto) has been depicted in various ways over the years, from the character's first appearance in The X-Men #1 to Ian McKellan and Michael Fassbender's live-action portrayals of the character.
As with many of its story arcs, X-Men: The Animated Series stuck closely to Marvel comics for its depiction of Magneto and his backstory sets up an interesting arc for the character in X-Men '97.

While the X-Men prepare for their homecoming to the MCU with the film Deadpool and Wolverine, fans are excited for the return of the epic clash between the X-Men and Magneto. The character was one of the main antagonists of Fox Studio’s X-Men franchise and was played by Ian McKellan and Michael Fassbender in the films.
However, fans might have to wait longer as the popular antagonist may take a backseat to pave the way for another much-awaited villain. According to industry insiders, the character Mister Sinister is being eyed by Marvel to stand against the X-Men in their reboot. This would be the villain’s first live-action appearance, after being rumored to be included in Hugh Jackman’s Logan.

Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.

James McAvoy has been in the entertainment industry since he was a teenager. When he made his debut as an actor in The Near Room in 1995, he was not much interested in becoming an actor. However, that changed soon and he ended up going to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He graduated from the academy in 2000.

Since then, he has worked with numerous great directors such as Steven Spielberg and Matthew Vaughn. Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap has canceled several shows they were due to perform at the SXSW festival to support their wild comedy biopic “Kneecap” in “solidarity with the people of Gaza.”
In a statement posted on its social media channels, the group — who go by the stage names of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí and star as themselves in the film — said that the decision was made due to “highlight the unacceptable deep links the festival has to weapons companies and the U.S. military who at this very moment are enabling a genocide and famine against a trapped population.”
We will not be appearing at @sxsw festival.
