At the 1959 American International Toy Fair in New York, an 11.5-inch plastic ingénue with improbably bombshell proportions made her debut. In her earliest iteration, Barbie was marketed as a “Teen Age Fashion Model” and was based on the German Bild Lilli doll that Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler had seen during her travels to Europe.
At the time, Bob Mackie was studying costume design at the since-closed Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles’ Westlake neighborhood. He would go on to a legendary career in fashion and entertainment, but already his eye for the female form was well defined. When he first saw Barbie, he was not impressed.
“I didn’t think she was very fashionable,” he says of the doll, who originally sported a simple black-and-white Chevron swimsuit, hoop earrings and a perky blond ponytail.
He had no way of knowing that he would become one of the people most closely...

When Jimmy Kimmel last hosted the Oscars in 2018, the TV vet made sure ticketed guests were prepared for the show to go long (as it typically does) by delivering curated “lunchboxes” packed with snacks under each seat inside the Dolby Theatre. Inside were gourmet chips, cookies, gummy bears, cookies and snack bars while the outside featured artwork from one of nine nominated best pictures.
As Kimmel returned to the Dolby on Sunday night for a third outing as host, he made sure the night was just as charming on the snacks front. He and his staff along with the Academy offered up another round of food boxes for the 2023 Oscars audience, expected to be at capacity of 3,400.
The boxes — covered with a caricature of a bearded Kimmel holding an Oscar — featured Shappy Pretzel Co., eco-conscious alumimun bottles of Open Water, Sour Patch candy and another “handwritten” note from the host himself.

Say What? Karaoke premiered on MTV in 1998. It was a spinoff of the popular reality show Say What?, where music videos for songs with fast or hard-to-understand lyrics were shown with the lyrics shown on the bottom of the screen.
Regular people, typically college students, would sing karaoke and then receive critiques from the judges. Celebrities like Shia Labeouf and Ashlee Simpson appeared as guest judges, and Say What? Karaoke was hosted by a series of stars like Boy Meets World actor Danielle Fishel, Dave Holmes, and singer Joey McIntyre.

At a Tribeca loft in New York City on Sunday evening, many of the cast members and producers of the new film “With/In” met each other for the first time. That’s because “With/In,” produced by Maven Productions’ Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, is an anthology of short films created during the early months of the pandemic.
In 2020, as the world shut down, Styler and Rattray had an idea: They’d flip through their extensive rolodex of Hollywood names — like Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Marvel, Rosie Perez, Gina Gershon, Chris Cooper and Talia Balsam — and ship professional camera, sound and production equipment to their homes. In possession of the equipment for two days, participants could write, direct and shoot a 10-minute short film on any topic of their choosing.
“I don’t think anyone quite expected how difficult the challenge would be,” Rattray told Variety at the screening. “With/In,” which features eight of the 13 films,...

This Katy Keene review contains spoilers.
Katy Keene Episode 5
“You broke the last part of her that I had left.”
In its most effective episode to date, Katy Keene delves deep into the history of the show’s characters and presents some relatable conflict for the first time. Even fairytales have villains, and the closest thing the series has to one of those is Gloria. She has softened considerably since the pilot episode (I’m guessing because Katherine La Nasa’s performance is too charming to be sinister), yet still remains the driving force behind the majority of tension here. This installment is no exception…yet there’s other drama to be found, sparked from our leads, which makes this the best episode so far of the young series.
Needing a letter of recommendation so that she can get into Parsons Art and Design School, she turns to Gloria for help.

One of the most anticipated events of the season, the annual Hot Pink Party was hosted by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (Bcrf) on Wednesday, May 15 at the Park Avenue Armory, raising $6 million for breast cancer research.
David Foster and Katherine McPhee at Hot Pink Party 2019
This year’s gala commemorated the incredible impact Bcrf investigators have made on research since the organization’s founding in 1993. Bcrf has been deeply involved in every major breakthrough in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship; since the establishment of Bcrf 25 years ago, breast cancer mortalities in the U.S. have declined by nearly 40 percent. As the top breast cancer charity in the U.S., Bcrf raises more money for metastatic research – and breast cancer research in general–than any other private funder in the world.

Ahead of Fur Free Friday, an international day of action on November 23, celebrities are speaking out against the “cruel” suffering of animals killed for the fur trade and backing calls by Animal Defenders International (Adi) to consign this brutal industry to the past.
Gemma Atkinson, who reached the Strictly Come Dancing final last year and formerly starred in Hollyoaks, said: “We can all make a difference by making fashion choices that are kind not cruel to the animals. Don’t contribute to the suffering and deaths of millions of animals – say no to fur, forever.”
Emily Deschanel, costar of the hit Us TV drama series Bones, said: “Fur looks best, and belongs, on animals not people. To end the horrific suffering of millions of animals we need to say no to fur – for good.”

It’s been 20 years since “Sex and the City” premiered on HBO, and several of the writers are telling some behind-the-scenes stories to commemorate the comedy that would define a generation.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, writer Jenny Bicks recounted the mortifying experience of trying to convince Warren Beatty to guest star during the show’s third season.
Remember when Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) goes to Los Angeles because there’s some Hollywood interest in turning her columns into a movie? Well, the team was in La two or three days before filming the scene, but still hadn’t landed a movie star to play himself. Don’t worry, though — this story ends up alright, alright, alright.

The Met Gala is just around the corner — and that means the biggest names in celebritydom will have to face the dreaded stairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The red carpet at the famed event includes a steep walk inside and unfortunately, Rita Ora, Lady Gaga, and more stars have experienced cringeworthy wardrobe malfunctions in their haute couture. In 2014, Rita accidentally flashed her underwear after adjusting the skirt of her champagne colored Donna Karan Atelier gown. That year also saw fashion faux pas from Kim Kardashian and Zoë Kravitz, who both experienced the downside of a very high slit. And can we talk about Gaga literally rear-ending her Versace-wearing buddy Kate Hudson on the steps a few years later, nearly trampling Kate's white gown in the process? It was definitely a bad romance... This year, the theme of the Met Gala is "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,...
